Katrina is one of the best hair stylists I've ever had. She is someone that I felt like knew her stuff and very confidently knew what I want. Hayes Valley heaven for hair. walked over from CC BART with a few mins to kill... offered wonderful hot cuppa from upstairs loft/wait area.. full espresso bar, teas, etc..a cafe unto its own while stylist frees herself. Christina was confident and moved fluidly as she gave me a tighter layer and framed my head with finesse. The convo flowed easily and the appointment was finished with style complete within an hour. I can't believe I haven't written a review for this place. I've been coming here for a year now. I followed Tina from concord to here. She's a pretty awesome stylist, but again that doesn't mean that everyone else here isn't. I've had other stylist come help or even take care of me because my preferred person was busy and it honestly doesn't bother me because they all had that perfectionist complex they're nice and helpful (you can tell). This place is pretty magical and relaxing, it's really one of the things I look forward to every month or so. Why you ask? well aside from having the regular ol coffee in a pot that most places have, they offer tea (the really nice one, no cheapo brands here) and they have an expresso machine. But I really just don't come here because I want tea or coffee, no not at all, I come here because I can bring my child no problem. Child as is DOG. Dog friendly place, they have a jar of treats and just as long as your child is behaved he/she can be off leash and roam around freely without anyone shooing him/her. Shane did an incredible job coloring my hair! I was looking for a fun gradient to strawberry blonde/ redish pink--something that wouldn't look too unnatural but still be a fun pop of color and Shane knocked it out of the park. In my 35 years of living in San Francisco I have experienced the work of hair colorists and stylists in dozens of salons. Nowhere have I experienced more hostility and lack of customer/client service then here. It starts at the top where the owner is abominable how so? Simple neglect. He sits on the phone chatting with his personal friend. If you have a question he's too busy to answer it.. They completely botched my color making it three shades darker then what I had asked for. They also left dye on my skin and when i called about having it rubbed off the next day was handed a mirror and bottle of stain remover & told to do it myself; no one would assist. I don't know what the problem is with these folks but there are so many salons in San Francisco I would highly recommend that you stay clear of this one read more

So I moved to the city last year and have gone to a couple other salons. One place that I'd be going to recently was great but started charging $150 for a cut which for me is just a lot. With tip that's almost $200 and I have short hair that requires cuts every couple months so had to switch it up. I found this place and the prices were super fair. Took a chance and booked with Emu. She is SO TALENTED. I had one reference photo and a pretty rough idea of what I wanted and somehow she just knew. Gave me the cutest little cut with layers and face framing bangs. I also have way too much hair and it can get very weighed down and she offered to thin it out which I'm so obsessed with. Def recommend this salon and Emu. So glad to finally find a place I can consistently go to. read more

I am soooo disappointed with my service I received at Taylor/Monroe. Being an LGBTQ+/POC owned business, my wife and I wanted to support. First off, I have to commend the salon on taking covid seriously, all the stylists were wearing masks and I was told they are continuing to do so even after the mask mandate is lifted. Good on them for helping keep their stylists and clients safe. I researched my stylist, loved their work based on photos on IG and Yelp and felt confident and excited for my appointment. The salon was pretty packed and very dimly lit. I sat with my stylist and told what I wanted- a cut, a root touch up to get out the grays and a toner to cancel out the brassiness from old color. I emphasized several times that I did not want a choppy cut and provided photos of my ideal and realistic look. As we get to the bowl to rinse out the root color my stylist tells me, "your grays didn't really get covered, next time we will have to do something more than a demi." Okay, well that's disappointing but it is what it is... I guess... Then as they are blow drying my hair getting ready for the cut my stylist says "you're still very brassy." Okay, yet again a service I was paying for and expectant of, not delivered. In fairness to them, I am totally aware that color reacts differently on everyone and my hair's tone, base and porosity are factors any stylist really has no control of. But still none the less disappointing as when you pay for a service you expect to receive it. (Right???) Then as they are cutting and drying my hair they say "I know it's a little bit choppy." Ah!! I probably said a dozen times I did not want a choppy cut. Here's the deal, my hair is super important to me. I'm projected to begin immunosuppressive medication soon and I've been told that losing some of my hair is a strong possibility. I stressed this to my stylist that I want to embrace my full head of long locks while I can if in fact I have to go that route in order to treat a medical condition. My hair also grows at an extremely slow rate. When I walked into the salon my hair was almost to my belly button, primarily all one length. I left the salon with my hair blow dried, hardly styled, and still a little damp. This was also my first experience at a salon where my hair looked and felt hardly styled. My wife looked at my hair and immediately squeezed my hand. It was bad. I decided to sit on it over the weekend, maybe we were imagining things or just not used to all the layers. Maybe it wasn't so bad. I ended up sending photos to other friends who are stylists in Southern California and everyone had the same reaction- "holy chop!" I tried styling it differently but even then it looked like I was wearing a short wig on top of a long wig. There was no blending or cohesiveness in the layers. I decided after the weekend to reach out to my stylist to try and work something out. I knew I needed to get it fixed and being that I live in Sonoma county coming back to the city was just a stretch. I ended up hearing from Benji who was informed that I wasn't happy with my service. I stressed that I still had grey roots, brassiness, and the cut... well, the photos all spoke for themselves. I think more than the service what disappointed me was that I was offered a $52.50 refund for the near $300 service I paid for and was not ultimately provided. It was like adding insult to injury. My wife paid $125 for her haircut but apparently because I purchased through a bundle (single process hair color + haircut) the cut only added up to $52.50 and that was all I was being refunded for. Ouch. I ended up going to another high end salon in Santa Rosa and my stylist who fixed my hair (photos attached) was pretty astonished that I walked out of a high end salon with hair like that and also at the amount I paid and the amount I was refunded. I lost so many inches off my hair unnecessarily. One side was also cut unevenly which now needs to just grow out. I understand things happen, no stylist is perfect and unforeseen things can happen at the bowl. Again, I'm less upset over the cut, the brassiness and the grays and more disappointed with how it was handled. read more

I will, however, say that I was not happy with it and that it was not at all what was agreed upon with the stylist. More than anything, I'm appalled at the service I experienced when I expressed my concern. The salon offered to have the same stylist that did my hair come back to try and fix it. I then mentioned that my priority is keeping the length for my wedding and the only way to fix it would be to take off more length and I'd rather receive a refund for the service. They said my only options were to accept a partial refund or not be allowed to return to the salon. So my advice would be to be very thoughtful on what you'd like done at this salon and whether it's worth spending $100+ on a haircut because you should not be asking a junior stylist no matter how basic you feel the haircut is. read more

I needed a last minute cut and color before moving, so I booked with Taylor / Monroe! The text service they use is super easy. I got a balayage with Bianca and a cut with Scott. Since I wanted a fair amount off, Scott cut some hair off before handing me back to Bianca. Bianca did a great job with my color - a week later, and I am loving the shade that my hair is! She was also super friendly. A different woman washed my hair, and she gave me a fabulous head massage. Scott was friendly and wonderful, and he gave some good suggestions on my hair. I love how it turned out, and I feel so much fresher than I did with my previous hair length. Expensive salon, but worth it! read more

Tried to make a last minute appointment with Benji. I know! But he was recommended by a friend and she simply raves about him! I was in a hurry, and their only available appointments were with Vanessa. I should've known better. The good ones are always booked! I explained what I wanted and even showed her a few pictures I'd saved on my phone. But after a little while I could tell that something was wrong. I asked for a medium-length shag bob, but she took way too much off. It was too late! So if you're going to make an appointment at Taylor Monroe you should definitely stick with Benji or one of the more experienced stylists. I am gonna be honest, I already walked in knowing that I will be satisfied. However, I didn't expect this much of a satisfaction. Even though I have been dying my with the cheap hair dye that I get from Walgreens and I had this permanent orange-gold color I couldn't get rid of even at a professional salon, Benji gave me a hair color that I love and I am so happy with the service I got and here is why: 1-No wrong advertisement. He tells you what he can do and what he can't with 1 session. Which is not the case in many hair salons. 2-I was very comfortable the whole session. Normally I am never comfortable at a hair salon because of the chair, hair brush etc. (Benji actually gave me the brush and let me brush my hair because it hurt otherwise) 3-I LOVED WHAT I GOT. I do see the tone I wanted to see. Thanks to Benji. I have been very harsh on my hair and kind of ignored that hair care is important (e.g. I never used conditioner and kept using Pantene for a while) Benji also taught me how to take care of my hair so I am happy that I will have a different routine. To be fair, as a student the prices are not cheap however, personally I do not have other expenses and would like to care about my hair because it's my only accessory if I consider I don't wear make up and don't spend money on skin care products. I walked in and was greeted with no issues. I was seen by Joey. I tried to be descriptive as possible with my desired look. I wanted side swept bangs and have my hair an intense black/blue. I started coming to Taylor/Monroe due to following my stylist Benji. I absolutely love this place! great atmosphere, and everyone is super friendly. Benji is my go to, I cannot imagine going anywhere else. He knows exactly what he is doing and my hair has never looked so good. I can't count how many times people compliment my hair. I used to have dark brown with random shades of color. Now I'm a blonde and my hair feels and looks good! It takes time, but the results are worth it.
