We have struggled to find a knowledgeable and reliable tax prep service in the 7 years that we have been married and filing joint taxes, and 2021 was the first year that I was self-employed, so we decided to reach out to Liberty Tax based on all of their positive Google reviews. It was by far the most seamless and straightforward experience we have ever had. This is a family-run business and they have been experts in the field for 40+ years. We met with Steve, who was so welcoming and had such calm, personal, and professional demeanor. It wasn't until the end of the process that I was hit with a $500+ tax prepation fee - and note there was nothing special about our documents, a few W2s and that was it! And there was nothing spectacular about their preparation; in fact they had a new hire do it! Having shopped around now and asked for quotes upfront I am blown away by how equally competent firms in the area are able to offer the same service for less than half the cost. He FORGOT to file my 2019 NY and NJ state taxes and I didn't find out from the state tax agency until 4 years later that I owe $7000 in penalties and interest! He requested a penalty abatement on my behalf by lying to NY state that the accountant went into labor while doing my taxes. I requested that he pay for his responsibility of $3700. He would only agree to pay for $1000. He claims it's my responsibility to audit him and tell him that they were not filed. I am suing him in small claims.

I first went to consult David back in March 2022 and he was great. He answered all my tax questions and I was in and out of the office in no time. I thought to myself, great, I just found an amazing accountant in my neighborhood. During that time, I explained to David about my situation and he responded to come back to me when tax season is over and all he has to do is to file a 1040x (to amend my tax return - 1040). (Side note: The issue that I had was that I initially e-filed my taxes. The federal rejected it but the state accepted it. Which is why I went to seek professional services in resolving the problem). So on December 12, 2022 at 1:30pm I went to see David and his office was busy. I told David I did not have an appointment and I asked, "should I make an appointment"? He decided to hear me out at first but then he passed my case to one of his employees. The employee explained to me that since I did not file my taxes 2020 taxes with them, there is nothing that they can do and I would have to come back during tax season. I tried to explain to them what David told me back in April (to come back after tax season) and David told his employee in Chinese "just ignore him, he is too annoying". Yup, just because someone doesn't speak the language, doesn't mean the person does not understand. The funny thing is that, just over the weekend, the same family friend asked me how was my experience with David because she wanted to file her taxes with him for the upcoming year. I raved about how great he was the first time around but after this experience, it got me to think: if a family friend doesn't even use your service in the first place, it is extremely telling of your professional demeanor or the lack thereof.
