Bagel and Deli is an Oxford experience that I think is a must-do at least once when you were in the…read morearea! If you know what you're in for, it's a super fun experience. When you walk past the shop on a weekend, you will see that there are tons of people crowded outside. These are people waiting for their order. It's a good idea to look at the menu ahead of time, but they do have paper menus available for when you are waiting in line. You enter the shop and go through the queue, order, and then return back outside to wait. Our toddler loved to look at everything inside the shop - the walls and ceiling are covered in colorful papers, photos, and paraphernalia. This does make the whole restaurant a little dusty and sticky, but that is all part of the vibe. It took us about 15 minutes to get through the line to order and then about 20 minutes waiting for the food. It was a beautiful day and spirits were high as everyone waited outside together. Now for what everyone was waiting for... Bagel and Deli sandwiches are unique because they are steamed. They are so melty, warm, soft, and delicious! Because they are warm and most of the sandwiches have fresh toppings like lettuce or tomato, it is a good idea to eat them immediately and not let them sit for a while. We enjoyed ours in the little park in downtown Oxford that had ample seating options. It was a beautiful way to take in a gorgeous fall day. Both my husband and I really enjoyed our sandwiches! The toppings are so creative and there's something for everyone. If you can't find one on the huge menu, you can always make your own too. My only complaint was that I couldn't decide between sandwiches because there were too many options that sounded good. For as crowded and busy as they are, the staff is super at getting all of the orders right and handling substitutions if they are out of a certain kind of bagel. I enjoyed the Blonde Bombshell and my husband got the Mile High Club. Interestingly, I don't think his sandwich was on the online or paper menu, but there was a listing for it inside the restaurant, which is how he decided to get it. Both were delicious! I believe that there is an order online option and they are good at making sure it is only available at times where they can handle it. For example, we visited during family weekend, so it was not available. I might try this next time if we are in more of a rush, but on a day where we had nowhere to be and wanted to enjoy High Street, this was the perfect stop. My husband and son really enjoyed their first visit and we all look forward to being back!

I can see the reason for the hype especially if I'm a drunk college student. The employee was friendly and offered an opinion when I asked for one which I appreciated. The shop definitely has a vibe and a charm that has collected over the last 50 years.

I started smiling as soon as we walked in. Such a cool and fun atmosphere. Chicago sports memorabilia everywhere you look along with Chicago food favorites on offer. The bar is old and wooden with comfortable seats. It has a really nostalgic feel, like an urban neighborhood pub from decades ago. Plenty of tables, and I've heard rumors of an upper deck that is open at appropriate times. There is also outdoor seating on High Street. The atmosphere is undoubtedly very different on a Friday night when it's packed with upper classmen throwing back shots, but on a weekday late afternoon suppertime I'd say it's family friendly and welcoming to all. (I even saw a sign behind the bar: No explicit lyrics before 9 pm.) There were several staff members at work either making food or behind the bar. They were all quite young, and quite friendly and cheerful. I'm holding off on the fifth star till we get a chance to try the food. We had already eaten and just stopped for a couple of beers (a Truth and a Mich Ultra, on tap). But now I'm writing this I'm getting a serious craving for Italian Beef, so hope to be back soon.
