Authentic Thai food served by warm and friendly people. What more could you want?…read more What's that? "Free Thai crackers" I hear you say... they do those too!! Blimey. Mainly because I couldn't decide, I went for the mixed platter to start, which was good. The rolls and dips were tasty, some items were a little greasy but the prawn toast was great. The satay sauce was the highlight. I also tried a little of the cauliflower and chicken coconut soup, which was amazingly light but perhaps a bit soapy...? For main I had the masaman. Lots of tender beef, amazingly rich and fragrant nutty, sweet sauce and boiled rice. Incredible. I couldn't finish it as it got a bit sickly but boy, it was good. And meant I didn't need pudding. The Pad Thai was amazingly fresh with plenty of flavour, but didn't live up to (my impossibly high) expectations. Even on weeknights it seems to get quite busy so best to book.

As we went midweek we could take them up on their midweek specials - 2 courses £14.95 3 for £17.95. Not restricted to just a few courses we had the whole of the a la carte menu to choose from. Food was lovely, fresh and good sized portions ( see pics) one friend went for the Thai style fish which was a whole fish served on a platter with separate veg - waitress assisted with removing it from the bone. Had a really lovely evening here - don't be put off by the outside whilst not bad it was clearly an old pub in its former life but a lovely restaurant with nice staff and good food now reside inside. Big car park also resides behind for the drivers amongst you although it easily reachable by tram.

And let's just say..I love English food, whether it's take away, pub food, or a posh restaurant!! My frist trip to the Starving Man was the day I arrived from a month study tour in Lucca, Italy and was desperate for a burger....SOMETHING that wasn't pasta or pizza! I had a burger and chips and it was pretty f---ing fit! I think I had fish n chips later in the week! MY FAVE! The other visits have been purely in search of one thing...a kebab! YUM! You can't really get anything like a good kebab in America (that I've found) and I enjoy them! A little lemon juice, ketchup and mayo! It's the great ending to a night out or sitting around my friend's kitchen table having a few glasses of vodka and a spliff! Im back in a week and I'll be sure to spend some of my "pound-age" at the Starving Man!

The reason being is the quality of the food and the friendliness of the staff. On the weekends it can get busy after hours as the pubs and bars empty and punters look for a quick bite, but everyone always seems in good spirits. The highlights for me are the pizzas, which have a thin, crispy base, and the lamb kebab which is very simple, served with naan, fresh salad and yoghurt sauce. It's good, honest food that you can't go wrong with.

I didn't get to try the food or even see the menu but there's an impressive looking kitchen so hope to return for that at some point (actually have now found menu online and as well as a grill they have a big sushi menu!!) Drinks wise, they had Antica Formula vermouth! The bartender had NO IDEA what it was or how to serve it but we quickly got the ice/lemon/appropriate glass sorted and although it might seem expensive at £4.50 for 50ml it's a good alternative to wine for an aperitif. Prosecco was £22 a bottle which wasn't bad either. I thought the ale selection was a little limited although and I couldn't work out what the microbrewery aspect was (curiously they only seem to have a wine menu even though they have an extensive amount of fancy sprits which you can't see properly). As the evening (Saturday) wore on it became increasingly busy and uncomfortable to sit at the bar with people bashing past you to get their order - they probably need to move some of those chairs on busy nights (/you might want to try another option - amazingly the market was actually quieter by that point!).

They were Supreme Champion at the British Pie Awards in 2015 - I think they should seriously consider changing their moniker to Supreme North Pie Co. after that. You may have seen their stall at various markets around the north, from Northwich to Urmston and West Didsbury, selling their wares to the public. They also occasionally feature at festivals; I was over the moon to see them at Festival No. 6 in Portmeirion. They've a permanent unit at food-hall-heaven Market House in Altrincham, where you can order pie, mash and gravy and enjoy THE BEST pies of your lives. Their Wagyu Beef & Onion pie was truly fantastic - a must dish for the autumn months. I'd kill to learn their gravy recipe!

Greater Manchester is famous for its meat pies and the Great North Pie company can stake (or…read moresteak?) a claim to being one of the area's best pie makers. (I know that not because I've sampled all the pies of the world but because they have an impressive display of gold medals awarded by folk who have.) They have a stall at Altrincham market to buy pies to take home. But they also have a separate space in the Market Hall where you can get your pie delivered to your table. You can add mash and gravy if you want to make a meal of it. Pie choices include cheese and onion, chicken and mushroom, minced beef and onion, and steak and ale. It was hard to choose, but I went for the steak and ale, with mash and gravy. I wasn't sure I made the right choice when it came out: the mashed potato looked a little watery and the pie crust a little too well done. But the mash was fine, the gravy delicious, and the pie was truly scrumptious. The crust was firm but not tough, containing a delicious stew of juicy steak chunks in a thick beer gravy. I washed it down with a fine ale from Jack in the Box, on the other side of the hall. Eating my pie in the beautiful and historic surroundings of the Market Hall only added to the Great North Experience.

I highly recommend the tender cow!!!

They've always got something good on their few draught pumps, but don't be discouraged from trying a bottle from another part of the world - check out their eclectic international menu first. As other reviewers have mentioned, there are pots of complimentary peanuts for customers. A sales ploy I'm sure, but I love those small gestures, it makes me love the place even more. As with Chorlton, there's a real neighbourhood bar element to this place and upon arrival the barmaid and one of the customers were having a good chat about the newest beers on offer from a great selection of breweries such as Camden, Brooklyn and some sweet looking Belgium options. I literally had 30 mins to spare before zooming off to my meeting but was hungry like the proverbial Duran Duran wolf so made a quick decision to have the tasty Matador pie (chorizo, beef, butterbeans, potato and olives) with a tasty side of minted mushy peas and homemade mash. The pie was amazing and in all came to £6.95 which I don't think was too bad for fodder of such quality! Pi is quickly becoming one of my favourite Manchester bars and I can't wait to get back here or Chorlton soon to try out some of their beers. Wunderbar!
