As expected this place was massively average. I personally don't have anything against this group…read morethat runs all these bars (I was excited to see something new opening up in HM and wanted to try asap) but all their concepts are great on the ideas front, very poor on the execution. There's just something about them that needs someone to join the dots and oversee the rollout and keep quality high, making sure everything is much better and matches their creative ideas. So like Infamous diner, Walrus, Rosylee etc it was a case of going once (potentially 2 or 3 times to the others if with friends) and really not having any desire to go back. Here's some points: * Very well designed, they've done a good job of revamping KRO. * Beer selection was pretty average, all the usual suspects from usual importer. * My wife's salted caramel espresso martini was very poor - so watery and not a hint of salted caramel - these are the attention to detail points I talk about earlier that need attention across all the bars as it sounded great on the nicely printed menu, but tasted very poor. Here's hoping things improve, from what I hear from friends on 2 separate occasions, the coffee is very weak, watery and poor so hopefully just some teething problems before staff are trained etc.

Pretty average. Nice looking menu and some dishes are good but having eaten here a few times now…read moreit's certainly lacking something. Every time we come there seems to be a long list of items off the menu due to one problem or another, and the service tends to be keen to please but amateurish. Popped up to their 'speakeasy' cocktail bar and the service and wait times are horrendous. Could be a cool place but really need to get their act together.

They seem to always have a very decent selection of eight keg and two cask ales on tap (the pics on their Twitter account @HeatonHops is evidence enough of that); and are supporters of both local breweries and those from further afield. Their fill station is a genius idea - glass flagons with a choice of four keg beers for you to enjoy at home. They charge £10 for a deposit on the flagon, plus the cost of the chosen beer. In addition, they have a large range of local, national and imported bottled and canned beers on the shelves for you to buy and take away. Locally popular and certainly loved, owners Damian and Charlotte should be extremely proud of what they have. My friends and I are planning on making this a regular haunt!

People drop in on their way home from work to fill flagons from their specialised counter pressure system which is a sight to behold. Costs £10 deposit per bottle I believe but you get this back on return of the bottle, most simply exchange for a refill when they're back though. Can get a little squeezy as it's not the biggest store front (there is more seating downstairs) but it's enjoyable to sit in the window with a pint and have a chat.

The chicken a tad dry but not bad. The wife's linguini with added chicken was not like house-made, but good. The daughter's salmon with shrimp and broccoli looks great and she's enjoying it. The house ales are quite traditional British beers; I think the bitter is quite nice. Plenty of nice, outdoor seating.

Saying that, it's definitely not worth a 3 so here's what I thought: This Sunday it was the first 'out of homes' lunch meet with the parents we'd met on our ante-natal classes so all decided to go out for lunch to the Elizabethan - a JW Lees pub in the heart of Heaton Moor village. While nothing was particularly bad about this pub, there was nothing that would set the world alight about it either. The decor looks mass produced and generic, the beers list boring and lacking in inspiration (the barmaid wondered why it took me 3 goes up and down the bar to choose what beer to have - hmm, generic lager A, generic lager B or should I go for generic lager C???) I ended up going for the MPA - Manchester Pale Ale, which was Mehhhhh...I imagine they must have put at least one hop in it somewhere along the brewing process though (maybe) I had the fish and chips which was ok, my wife had the steak pie which was ok, everyone else had dishes with the same yellow/grey chips and frozen peas which were ok, most people had desserts which looked frozen but were ok, ok ,ok zzzzzz! (Sorry I feel asleep due to lack of stimulation thinking about it) The highlight of our trip to the Elizabethan was catching up with our friends and the room we were in was nice and relaxed and the staff were very friendly which was a bonus. I also enjoyed a game with them on the pub quiz machine at the end which was pretty neat for 50p a game. Sorry about my lacking in inspiration for this review but why spoil the theme for the day. If you are a fan of just OK then you'll be cool going to the Elizabethan - personally if I had to visit places like this regularly then I feel I'd have given up on life a bit and would struggle to look myself in the mirror each morning. Best tip - use Yelp to find alternative dining options in the local area.

A very welcome addition to the Stockport scene and somewhere to definitely start the night on the way to the Magnet or maybe on the way back, the vibe is laid back and modern looking while still giving a nod to the old architectural style of this classic building. It was a smart decision to do something new with this place and on this Thursday evening it was fairly busy with beer loving punters. On tap there were 5 Robbies classics (we tried the Citra - ok but not quite enough citra in it for my liking and compared with the likes of Oakham ales same type) and there's 5 guest beers on tap from exciting craft beer breweries. Sandwiched in between there's still room for all the usual lagers and they have Brooklyn and Blue Moon on tap. Prices are fairly decent really (compared to Manchester city centre) and its refreshing to see the pricing reflected in the strength of the ale and fairly transparent in what you're actually paying when ordering a beer. We were drinking the Great Heck hoppy wheat beer mainly - if you see it on tap somewhere then make sure you get yourself onto it, so so good! Their food menu is all about the dogs - but as opposed to hard skinned fakey American ones, these are all about proper British butchers ones which fit in well with a giant roll and some crazy toppings - I went for the classic one which was good enough for me (£6 with pickles, tasty onions etc) although you could have everything from blue cheese to meatball toppings (time to get a bit more adventurous next time I think!) Nice job Bakers - looking forward to getting back here very soon! Wifi password is: aabbcc33ee

    Fallowfield

You remember The Gin Club which was so popular and inviting in the lively Fallowfield? Well it is…read moreno more now! And this is the earliest report about it Yelp users could ever get! On 10th April, a new snazzy place has taken over the posh Gin Club, which I so dearly loved! Bar 43 is what its called, (ring a bell to Bar 38 near the AMC Cinemas?) and it is not a bad looker to be honest! The place is big enough, not huge. It is dimlit and has walls of velvet, yes, imagine someone throwing up or spilling drinks, its all going to stay there for a very long long time! Ok, lets not think about that! The bar is equipped with ok-ish bar tenders who think they're amazing. Well, they did put efforts into putting a fire-bottle show and then landed up spraying some drinks on me and a friend who happened to walk in here, looking for the Gin Club on a saturday night. The place inside has little stools and little round tables all with candles. It could be the new dressy place Fallowfield would witness! The drinks are fairly priced. £5.20 for regualr cocktails and £2.50 for a 175ml glass of wine and the shots are priced at just £2, if it stays this way, it wouldn't be a bad place to dress up and come to! The live music of the Gin Club was definitely a plus point that this place is going to be missing, gahh, why did it have to go! It had a different feel to it all together! Right from the name to the place, it was something different! Now its been replaced by a commercial posh-bar thing. Oh well, maybe in time, acceptance will be recieved to bar 43! Till then, Gin Club, you shall be deeply missed!

First of all I'm annoyed at this place because it took my beloved Gin Club away from me. It was…read morereally going to have to do a lot to persuade me that it would be even an adequate replacement. It categorically failed on that count. Aesthetically very little has changed here - there is some new twirly, baroque-patterned fabric wallpaper; three flatscreen TVs bolted to the wall; the bar has some mirrors behind it now but essentially it is the same place. Except that it really isn't. They killed the vibe, they just killed it man. Instead of laid back jazz, funk and hip-hop (a sample Gin Club playlist might have included Isaac Hayes, RJD2 and Peggy Lee) they now play (very loud) chart dance and r'n'b, which although not bad in itself does mean there is yet another bar in Fallowfield that plays the same music. Gone too is the live music, a really great loss. The cocktail menu is essentially the same but everything seems to have gone up by £1, the quality though leaves much to be desired (although most of this owes to the rookie bar staff). On the plus side beer and cider prices have remained pretty much static at around, or under, £3 a pint and a double and mixer costs around the same price. This isn't enough to pull it back from the brink though - everything that made Gin Club special and interesting has gone and been replaced by what is effectively a serial number.
