Unfortunately, landlords who care very little for their tenants. Not reliable and difficult to reach when maintenance requests are placed. Water heating system broke down several times in the winter. Poor upkeep of apartments and many outstanding code issues (no bathroom vents, pest problems, poor insulation). Would recommend avoiding the properties. Overpriced significantly. I lived in my apartment (222 E. 84th St) on the Upper East Side for over 4 years and was a perfect tenant. I moved out back in October 2020 and it has now been a full 3 months and I still have not received my security deposit. I have sent weekly e-mails and since involved a lawyer. Alan Tauber has not responded via email or phone. The only somewhat responsive employee has been Judy Stepeck. She works with new leases, but was at least my one contact I had given I had sent her photo/video of my apartment for her to use in the listing of the apartment. I have been nothing but accommodating and patient and yet the absolute disregard of acknowledgement, care, principle, professionalism, and respect is absolutely unacceptable. read more

I wish I could give no stars! Tauber and his employees are pitiful excuses for human beings. AVOID LIVING IN ONE OF THEIR BUILDINGS AT ALL COSTS!! To start, the buildings are garbage, roach infested, they are unresponsive. They treat the tenants like trash. Mike Tauber hates women, during one of our conversations he ended it by saying "where you able to understand what I said to you or do I have to call your husband?" After moving out, would not return our security deposit for months (illegal). When they finally sent it, it was for a lower amount- which is against New York State law as they didn't alert us of any problems. When we approached them, the response was "Sue us? STAY AWAY. Very slow with their service and the landlord is rude and doesn't give a damn about their own building or the tenant. Even simple tasks with setting up a mailbox took weeks after move-in. This resulted in my mail being delivered in another box that's not mine. The only reason why I saw that it was my mail is because the mailbox that my mail was in is broken. I was just looking around the mailbox and saw a mail with my name in a box that's not mine and I can't open it.... It's been a week now, they kept saying they are coming, but nothing's been done. On the building front, there's a leak in the ceiling of the hallway (thankfully not in my apartment) that has not been fixed. It really is not my problem, but if left alone for longer period of time that leak will probably be a bigger problem than it is now. Apart from that, the building amenities are not as promised. They did advertise that they have laundry in the building when I viewed the apartment. It was broken then, but they are "fixing it". When I called to follow up, the landlord yelled at me and said I should let him do his job. Guess what?, 2 months later it is still broken. The only reason I chose this place was the laundry in building feature and I can't use it. I don't really understand how long it would take to simply fix a washing machine, but definitely not 2 months. I would stay away from this landlord. Even would pay higher to rent to just not face these types of problems. Again, STAY AWAY. read more

I lived in a tauber properties apartment for the past 3 years. Management was always a pleasure to work with... when before signing my lease I was a little skeptical about all the older reviews (which are completely false) but I'm so happy I chose to move forward. Michael Tauber is great... kind of scary at first but once you open communication with him, he will basically do anything to help. From repairs, to rent increase. The supers are cleaning the building daily, which is always a plus. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 pandemic we needed to move out of the city. Makeda was so helpful with this process and allowed us to break our lease with no penalty due to the current crisis. We were able to get my apartment re-rented within 7 days. I couldn't thank them enough for helping us out in such trying times. I will definitely be renting from Tauber when i return to NyC! read more

I lived at 310 West 95th Street property. The apartment was awesome and perfect for newlyweds. I never had any communication with Mr. Tauber. This 5 star review is actually for the Super (Dennis) of 310 W 95th and Makeda, who works at the management office. If I had a request, it would be completed within 48 hours. If I had a question, I could usually get an answer the same hour. Having lived in NYC for ten years, Dennis and Makeda were the absolute best and I wish more management offices took notice. Would make living in NYC that much more awesome! When it was time to move away (we had to break our lease a month early), they made it very, very easy. I read the reviews here before signing my lease and asked Mike Tauber about them. He told me the reviews referred to an "Alan Tauber," not him. Just to be clear--this review is about Mike Tauber. I rented one of the apartments on 85th St for a year and this was, by far, the worst landlord I ever had. Their apartments are, indeed, a little bit below market, but they are old and not maintained well. I had water leaking from the ceiling twice, and that was eventually fixed but the ceiling still looked bad. The toilet was old and did not work properly at times (if you flush for a second too long, water would leak to the floor). There was a no-dishwasher policy in the apartment. What makes the experience really bad though is dealing with Mike Tauber and his secretary. Mike is an unpleasant individual who tends to behave in very unprofessional ways. He gets annoyed quickly when you ask them to fix something, like non-working toilets, and will make all sorts of accusations and nasty comments that are entirely uncalled for. The secretary is not much better and will usually just find an unpleasant way to say no to anything that you'll ask her about. My advice--stay away! The location is great, quiet and by the park, and that's about it. It took them almost two months to finally mail me my security deposit, after many unpleasant phone calls and emails. read more

I'm still unfortunately living in a building run by Larry and Micheal Tauber - and various requests for repairs ( including one critical one) has gone unattended to for days . I truly enjoyed my time in our Upper West Side apartment managed by Tauber Properties. It had all of the charm and character you would expect from a flat in this part of manhattan... high ceilings, exposed brick walls, fireplace with beautiful victorian mantle. And I found their prices competitive compared to other properties in the neighborhood. Their rent increases were fair (even had a few years without increases), and they always attended to maintenance issues quickly. read more

Another tenant's ceiling caved, and the landlord did nothing. They said they are too busy as many of their buildings are falling apart. Refused to refund any rent, claiming that the lease exempts them from water damage (not true if the damage is due to gross negligence from the landlord). One of the worst landlords in NYC. Do not rent from Tauber properties!!!! I can promise you you will regret it. You are better off spending a little more money and going elsewhere. I have been living with one roommate in 851 West End Avenue for almost one year. The building might as well be made of cardboard. Flooding from upstairs has twice ruined our own belongings in the kitchen and bathrooms, and you can hear footsteps from people in the hallways as if your front door does not exist. The buzzer does not work to let food delivery men in, so I am forced to meet them downstairs at the front door. The "laundry machines" are so ineffective that the clothing often comes out dirtier. And there were MICE found in my apartment twice. We were forced to spend our own money to resolve the flooding issues, as any affordable insurance policy will not make it worth taking the hit on the deductible. Upon explaining this to them, they are quick to deflect the issues, of course saying that there is nothing they can do unless the problem was caused by structural issues with the building. Well here's the problem... the building itself is structurally deficient... so don't rent from them. The management shows a complete lack of sympathy for any problems in the building you bring up the super is extraordinarily hard to communicate with. Dealing with their office manager is so-so, but she has not power to make any decisions. read more

I gave the company more credit than they deserved the first time around. I've had an ongoing maintenance issue for well over a year with Tauber and they simply don't respond to my emails. The secretary is such a monumental [edited] that I refuse to call and deal with her. Calls to the superintendent of the building always end up evasive -- the super blames Tauber for the problems; Tauber blames the super for the problems; nothing ever gets done. Seriously - the rent is relatively cheap compared to what you can find nearby, but you get what you pay for. Tauber is terrible. read more

This review is specifically about my experience renting from Alan Tauber, though I suspect any Tauber building is similarly 'managed'. Of course hindsight is 20/20, and looking back, there were warning signs that weren't heeded. But personal circumstances led me to rationalize them and it came back to bite me in the a**. Upon moving in, I discovered neither the security intercom nor the oven worked. It took several months of repeated phone calls to get the oven fixed, although 'fixed' meant it took multiple tries and click-click-clicking before it would ignite. It was a similar situation for the buzzer/intercom repair. In this case it took years of requests and complaints. A repairman would show up, look at it, fix one part, say he would come back to finish the job, and it would be months (and multiple emails) before the cycle repeated. There were LEAKS in the ceiling every time it rained heavily (and I didn't live on the top floor). There was also the time one of the other apartments started on fire and the fire department had to break down the front door of the building to get in. It took months of repeated complaints to "management" and 311 before the lock on the front door was replaced. And of course, the occasional DEAD RAT on the front stoop. But all of that pales compared to the COCKROACH problem. They stayed hidden for awhile when I first moved in and by the time I realized there was problem in the building it was too late. They were huge! They were everywhere - in the kitchen cabinets, the closets, the vents in the bathroom, and the basement where there was a washer and dryer (that prompted me to schlep my clothes to a laundromat). They would sashay across the living room floor like they were working a red carpet. They were in the hallway of the building. I was too embarrassed to have guests because I didn't want a roach to make an appearance while someone was visiting. The last straw was when I opened the silverware drawer and one was on top of the forks! For the last 4 months I lived there I refused to go in the kitchen or open the cabinets/drawers because I was so traumatized. I moved to a well-maintained building and months later, I am still scared to open the kitchen cabinets because of living in Alan Tauber's roach motel! (By this time I had figured out it would be wise to document *everything* and decided to photograph each roach I saw/killed. I've uploaded just a few pictures for your viewing pleasure and to prove I am not exaggerating.) The nightmare did not end when I moved out. As was the case with many of the other commenters, Alan Tauber REFUSED TO RETURN MY SECURITY DEPOSIT. I filed a complaint with the Attorney General and enlisted an attorney to help me but he bullied me and threatened to ruin my credit. (How would that work when he owed me money?) For months, Tauber refused to return the money until finally I sued him. He lied under oath and claimed I caused damage to the apartment in attempt to avoid returning the money. Thankfully, the Judge saw through his lies and ruled in my favor. He lied when he finally returned my money, too; claiming he was going to pay it back all along. This man is Shady with a capital 'S'. He will ignore your repair requests and if you're lucky enough for him to actually do something about a complaint it will be done as cheaply as possible. You will have to fight him tooth and nail to get your security deposit back. "Run-around" Kira S----, his office manager, is rude and will give you every excuse in the book as to why something can't be done (i.e. the 'run-around'). The only positive thing I can say is that he responded quickly when I complained about MICE in the apartment. tl; dr: Avoid at all costs! Renter beware!! Truly an awful landlord throughout the entire 12 month experience I lived in one of their properties on W 95th Street (ironically, the same building pictured on their main website). We killed 17 mice during the months of February - April in 2015, and we also killed 15 mice during July - August of 2015 (totaling a disgusting amount - even the regular exterminator felt bad for us). Tauber refused to acknowledge the need for repairs, and would not fix a broken kitchen cabinet that allowed the mice to enter the apartment. I even had blood on my window sill from mice walking across it due to their exterminators putting poison throughout my entire apartment and within my walls without my knowledge, putting my dog at a huge health risk. My roommate and I used to wake up in the winter time from hearing mice in the walls and ceiling. We were NOT the only tenant in the building with these issues, and it was common for most people in the building to openly complain of Tauber in the hallways and laundry room. Mike Tauber did very little to help this entire situation until the apartment was put on the market and it was being shown to potential new tenants. I ultimately had to befriend the real estate broker in order to have anything done by the Taubers; it's hard to sell an apartment when there are mice traps and droppings everywhere - it was disgusting. Front door to the entire building would also consistently not work - it did not require a key to receive access to the building (you could simply push the door open). Mike Tauber refused to acknowledge that repairs were needed, despite videos/pictures being sent to him of the exact issue showing what would happen when you pushed on the door. Tauber ultimately said we were the only tenant complaining of this issue and therefore we were liars and were harassing him with false claims (despite everyone knowing about this issue in the building and documented proof). Ultimately, we experienced 30+ dead mice, no hot water for a 6 day period, constant verbal and written forms of harassment, refusal to acknowledge the need for repairs, black sludge coming from the bathroom sink due to backups in the building, a broken window (which they said they couldn't fix - it did not fully shut), and so many other minor issues. The secretary at their office is also extremely unprofessional and rude. We were never late with rent, and definitely did not deserve to be treated with such low respect as Mike Tauber and his secretary did towards us (and other residents in the building). We kept the apartment in great condition, and they even rented it within ~4 weeks (compared to the apartment being empty for weeks when we moved in the year prior). I would suggest talking to existing tenants before signing a lease with any of their buildings. read more

I lived in an apartment on the UWS managed by Tauber Properties for 5 years. During that time I don't believe I had a single positive interaction with Mike Tauber or any of his staff. I was always made to feel as if any questions or maintenance requests I had were a horrible burden on Tauber. I had an array of issues over the 5 years and it always took multiple calls and emails to get any sort of response. First, they do not adhere to proper fire safety codes and truly do not care about the safety of their renters. About 2 years after moving into my apartment the smoke detector was having issues. We asked them to change it and were told that was not their responsibility. When we finally removed the device we noticed the expiration was 20 months before we even moved in... meaning the smoke detector wasn't working for almost 4 years! After that discovery they did change out the device... shockingly. Another time there was a leak in the sink in my bathroom. The water was getting pretty bad so I called Tauber concerned it could also potentially impact the apartment below me. I requested they check my apartment immediately as I could not find the origin of the leak. Mike Tauber then proceeded to yell at me over the phone telling me that my issue didn't deserve to be expedited and that I shouldn't think I was better than the other people with issues. I tried to explain to him that I was concerned for my downstairs neighbors safety and was also trying to make sure that his property did not end up having any major damage. I guess if he was comfortable with the possibility of the sink falling through the floor of my apartment to the apartment below then I could wait. Renters beware- most landlords in New York are bad, but it almost feels as if these guys get pleasure out of endangering their renters. Get everything in writing/email cause they will do everything they can to screw you. Also expect them to increase your rent 7-10% annually even if the market is down and the increase brings you above market value. read more

I lived in a studio rented to me by Alan Tauber between 2012-2015, but had to leave NYC in February of this year. Before I moved in, I read the Yelp reviews and was extremely nervous about moving in to the unit I saw, however the price was well below anything I saw anywhere else on the UWS, especially for the amenities that came with my studio (extra long studio on Central Park? dishwasher? exposed brick? yes please), so I decided to take my chances. During the 3 years I lived there, my building was quiet, well-maintained, and I could not have been happier with the area and the apartment. The super came within 24 hours every time I called, which was only for one issue repeatedly (loud radiator knocking, which they unfortunately were never able to fix. Given the rent I paid, I still considered it a steal). I had to break my lease in February of this year, which Alan was extremely understanding about. From these reviews, I was so nervous about not getting my security deposit back. However Alan NOT ONLY refunded me my security deposit back in full, he also refunded me back part of my February rent, as he was able to get tenants moved in mid-month. According to my lease, he could have kept my security deposit since I moved out early, and was under no obligation to let me know tenants had moved in, let alone provide me an additional refund for my Feb rent. I did have to call a few times, but Kara was always polite, and the process was straightforward. Honestly, I hope to get back to NYC in the next 2-3 years, and I will be calling Alan directly to see if apartments are available in one of his buildings - maybe some of the things below really did happen, but I have never had anything but a positive experience in the apartment I rented from Alan Tauber. read more

The buildings are old and not well maintained and several people have experienced rodents. The turnover in the building was ridiculous with the amount of people moving out shortly after realizing what a mistake they made. DO NOT RENT FROM TAUBER PROPERTIES. The other reviews here are not to be trusted/not real. I lived at a Tauber property at 310 W 95th Street. The apartment was priced slightly below market, but had I known how terrible my experience with Mike Tauber, Makeda, and their full staff would be, I would not have moved in. I do not write reviews here, but feel it necessary to warn other potential tenants to avoid this utter scam. Here's a short list of just some of my issues: 1) They delayed my move-in date because the apartment was not ready and did not remunerate me for it or offer me an alternative place to stay. 2) The unit had a busted radiator with a pipe that banged against/was breaking through the floor, which they refused to fix. 3) The kitchen sink was broken, which they refused to fix. 4) The fridge ended up breaking, which they refused to fix. 5) Dark brown water came out of the shower/bathtub despite daily use, which I complained about, and Tauber/the super refused to do anything, saying that was common for New York buildings. I hired a plumber and came to find out that there was a serious drainage issue needing fixing and that the water quality was dangerous. 6) The super, Dennis, would enter my apartment without consent; once he laid down mouse traps in my unit while I was out of town because I had apparently reported mice in the building -- I had not, but that was how I learned the building had mice. 7) Despite my keeping the apartment in perfect condition and never missing a rent payment, they have not returned my security deposit nearly a month after the 14-day deadline, and have gone radio silent (no response to email, calls, etc.). I will have to file a legal claim to retrieve it. Other tenants have had similar issues with them as well, and I ended up moving out the soonest I could after one year. DO NOT RENT FROM TAUBER PROPERTIES. Look elsewhere. It's not worth the ~$100/month below comparable offerings. Trust me. read more

Just awful!!! Every review here on yelp is 100 percent true. Toilet upstairs kept overflowing in my kitchen and no one would return calls then they sent maintenance guy over to sparkle ceiling. Moved out early because we couldn't live with the conditions any longer. There are mice in building. Mike Tauber the owner is very confrontational if you call about an apartment problem it ends in an altercation. So unfortunate. Beautiful neighborhood Don't expect any stairs or walks to be shoveled if it snows. Found one if maintenance guys in our apartment looking through personal items --sent letter to management office no response. Should have called the police!! Go elsewhere. Save yourself the aggravation !!! We did not pay our last months lease because every person in that building that moved out while we were there they didn't get their security deposit back for over 90 days. When I decided I wanted to break my lease in the second year, Tauber Properties helped me find a new tenant and was more than happy to accommodate me. I never waited too long for a repair. I lived in one of his buildings for 2 years, 2 days would have been too long. First I would like to say that it has been a year since I moved out and have yet to receive my security deposit back even with countless calls, emails and even a complaint with the city. Some of the other problems were having the lock on my apartment door break causing me to be locked in and paying over $300 to be let out and have it fixed when he then refused to reimburse me. During hurricane sandy a tree fell into my yard, blocking 3 emergency exits! It took him 6 months to have it removed and only after i threatened to call the city and report him. The "new" oven/stove was leaking gas and it took him hours to return my emergency calls. A pipe broke in my kitchen and it took a week to have him send someone to repair it. I could go on and on. It took two complaints about homeless people staying in the foyer for them to finally fix it. It's been 6 months since I moved out & they refuse to send me my security deposit. I lived in a Tauber building for four years. It actually started out great. Despite the fact that the stove didn't work (which they fixed) and I saw a mouse, I was really happy with my apartment. But the longer I lived there, the more things went wrong. Things that were broken in the building didn't get fixed in a timely manner; something minor in my apartment that broke didn't get fixed at all; sometimes there'd be too much heat, sometimes not enough; more than once they called and told me they couldn't find my rent check despite the fact that I was never once late with it. If you're a student and only planning on being in the city for a year or two it's not so bad having to deal with them (I didn't have the horrible bug problems that other Yelpers have mentioned), but if you're looking for somewhere to live for a long-term period, avoid. read more

I've been in their building on W95th for several years, absolutely no complaints. Great super, great tenants, managements been fine to deal with. I don't have bugs or pests of any kind. I lived in one of Tauber Properties on the Upper East Side for two years and overall I didn't have any problems with the apartment itself, however anytime I had any issue that needed someone to come to the apartment it would take a few phone calls before anything was done. The receptionist is extremely rude and anytime I called she acted as if I was incoveniencing her very much and was not helpful at all. Thankfully none of the issues I had with the apartment were major enough to require immediate attention because they really took their sweet time to address anything. I moved out of my apartment in mid-November 2011 and the reason why I'm writing this review is because I have yet to receive my security deposit back even though I was told by e-mail that I would get it within 45 days of my move out date. When I called the office this morning, the receptionist (been her usual nasty self) told me that I should be receiving it shortly. When I asked her for a date she told me that it takes 45 days from the end of the lease date (contrary to what she, herself, wrote on the e-mail) to receive my deposit back and since I moved out earlier that's why I hadn't received it. When I pointed out that it had been more than 45 days from the end of the lease date anyway (since obviously she can't count), she proceeds to tell me that they would send me a check as soon as they got the money in their account (whatever that means). When I asked her again for a date she told me that she couldn't give me a specific date and that is all the information she had for me. I told her that her answer was unacceptable since they should be able to tell me when I would get my money back, the same way I always paid my rent on time (or earlier). She got upset and told me that she told everyone else the same information and nobody had a problem so there was nothing she could do or anyone else I could speak to. I told her that I wanted to speak to Mr. Tauber since he's the one that I signed the lease with and who was very keen on telling me about the late fee if didn't pay my rent on time. She said he's not available and just transfered me to his voice mail without saying a word. I left Mr. Tauber a message but do not expect to hear from him any time soon as he never returns any calls from his tenants. Be aware of renting apartments from this Management company as you will be frustrated trying to get them to address any concerns you have and the level of rudeness you encounter any time you call that office is beyond belief (I guess they forget that it is the tenants' rents that pay their salaries). You may not even know you're dealing with a Tauber Property at first because they go by many names (mine was 304-306 East 83rd Realty, LLC) which makes me wonder if they are not running some tax evasion scheme as well. read more

I have lived in several different Tauber Properties apartments for 4 years (keep changing as better apartments become available - NOT because of any problems) and have NEVER had a problem with anything. They have repaired minor things in my apartment, the supers are terrific, and the exterminator comes like clockwork on the first Monday of each month. I have never seen a cockroach in my apartment. I find them quite reasonable to deal with and my annual rent increases are in line with others in the city. read more

I recently moved out of a property on 47 West 85th street, and contrary to what the above reviews were, I had a very nice experience of my time living in this building. (2 years) I only had an issue in my apartment once- with a leak. The super could not fix the issue so the plumber was called in to fix it,and it was resolved within a week. I would drop off my rent check and I always had pleasantries with the receptionist. I found her nice. Any time I would see Mr. Tauber on the street he would always say hello. My super kept the building clean and helped me out moving something heavy a time or two. I had a GREAT and EASY experience renting from Tauber Properties! read more

There are a few things you should know about Tauber properties. First, you can find reasonably priced apartments in their many UWS properties. The good news end there. After you move in, you understand why they are, very relatively speaking, reasonably priced. It is because you will not get any service whatsoever. They have been holding these properties for decades and are milking them without putting anything in, They pinch every penny, and I mean every penny. For anything you need done, you will need to call/email at least 4-5 times and when in the end they come to fix it, they will use diluted paint, cheap materials, etc, i.e. will do just the bare bare minimum so in a month or two, the thing you called about will need fixing again. They will be consistently rude and dismissive. The secretary everyone is complaining about is just doing what everyone in this company is doing. This is a strategy and it says - don't bother us. Pay your rent and shut up. Also, don't move in or out during the weekend. We had the misfortune of moving in on a Saturday. Nobody was there to let us in. After many calls and hours of waiting the guy comes in completely wasted. WASTED. He gets drunk every weekend. So be warned. read more
