I live in southern California where there is a taco place on every corner. I can't find anything there similar to this. I love the puffy flour tortilla, heavenly pork filling, and that it was non greasy and fresh. The one I ate at is a block from the Capitol building. Wonderful! I'll be a regular while I'm here. read more

Not the best looking restaurant but we were won over by the flour taco! You should try it if you're visiting Iowa. We stopped by on a Thursday around 2 pm for a late lunch. We shared the flour tacos with beef, steak, and beans; corn tostada, and mushroom poppers. The flour shells were airy and fluffy. The tacos were packed with lettuce, cheese, and protein. The staff was friendly and helpful. read more

Best Mexican food hands down! I LOVE the original puffy taco and the original enchilada. Note that I did not say this is the best *fast food* Mexican, even though it is. It's really, really good Mexican food regardless of speed or type of restaurant. This place IS THE BEST MEXICAN FOOD! If I could only eat one thing for the rest of my life, it would be the original enchilada. Forever and ever amen. read more

Tasty Tacos - Soft Shell Taco, Corn Taco, Enchilada & Beef Burrito. No better food on the planet I am stuffed and can't wait to go back!! - Mexican Near Me - Des Moines, Iowa

I've never understood why so many people love this place. I can only assume that, being from Iowa, they have never experienced good Mexican food. Not only is the food terrible, but they routinely get the order wrong. I've given it many chances because my native Iowan friends like it. I've even visited multiple locations. Their motto is Nada es impossible...except for making decent food, I guess. read more

I've eaten here several times something is wrong. I got a flour taco and it is smaller and different not at all like it usually is. I got poppers and they were burnt. Hot sauce didn't have any flavor, usually the in house sauce is crazy good. I'm very sad read more

My favorite Tasty Taco location! All tasty tacos are truly tasty, but this freestanding restaurant earns "favorite" status because it is easy to get to off the interstate, is especially sparkly clean, and has more sunshine streaming through the windows then seems possible. I can speak only to the tasty taco and white cheese queso - they are delicious! And I likely will never veer from this order. A great stop while in Des Moines. read more

The original tacos are really good! The shell is fluffy and the ground beef and condiments are all really tasty. The price is good too. The only reason this is a 3 star review is that the chicken taco was pretty bad... definitely just go for the ground beef original taco and you'll be enjoying a nice 4 star meal. read more

Tacos were very large and amazingly good! Service was good, even though you mostly seated yourself and got your drinks. If you asked for something, it was immediately done. read more

it's a bit ridiculous to have a phone pick up line and then make them wait and go in line with the people ordering in so that I can sit there and wait longer while my food gets cold. the reason to phone in a order is so that you can pick it up when it's ready. Tasty Tacos is completely overrated and has only been going down hill. definitely a shadow of its former self not nearly as good. Tacos are bland... and the don't give a sh"t attitude is awesome. pretty much avoid this one at all cost which is a same because it used to be one of the best. read more

I hear about this place and decide that maybe it will be a nice Mexican restaurant. So I walk into the restaurant and realize it is fast food! This disappoints me, thinking that it won't be authentic Mexican, (hint hint: it wasn't) so I go up to the line and see a guy with greasy hair and dirty hands taking my order. He was mumbling the whole time and was very rude. I order the original flour and the steak flour. About five minutes later I get another red flag. My food was already ready. This is bad because you know they have just been heating this up all day, and didn't prepare after I order. I get it and a puffy flour taco arrives at my seat. This make me lose my appetite! As I dig into my food I take a bite of a freezing cold cheese clump and raw meat. I decide to just try my other taco. I pick it up and realize there is mold in the tortilla. I don't even take a bite of this one. But I was still hungry and decided to not waste my money so I take a bite of my first one and happen to look across the guy at the front desk from earlier. I almost threw up. Never coming back again! read more

Consistently voted best place to grab a lunch under $10 in Des Moines, and for good reason! It may not look like much, but every Tasty Taco location I've been to has consistently served delicious food. The Classic Flour Taco has a crispy yet fluffy flour shell & doesn't get soggy/fall apart. Taco consists of well seasoned bean and meat mixture (they sell the seasoning packets there & at Hyvee!), lettuce, and cheese. Topping it with the house salsa is a must, flavorful yet not too spicy. Everything else I've tried on the menu is good, but the flour taco should be your go to. Service is fast and friendly. A must try for quick and easy meal in Des Moines! read more

As I walk through the front door, this place did not look like a Mexican restaurant! I really hoped for a really nice traditional restaurant, but it wasn't. This place is like a fast food restaurant! You don't get a menu nor a waiter. You have to wait in line right when you walk into this place. This wasn't starting off good and I haven't even gotten my food! The guy at the counter had greasy long hair and grubby hands! He didn't look like he wanted to be there. He was mumbling and got my order wrong! This service was terrible. Not even 10 minutes later my food was done. This means they have had it sitting around in the back waiting for someone to order! They didn't even have margaritas! Then, as I dig into my food, I got a steak enchilada. This enchilada had greasy old cheese on the top of it. The cheese wasn't even runny at all! As I dug into the food it wasn't bad first taste. But as I dug in more the steak had a ton of fat and very little meat. Overall, this place was not very good. read more

I'm giving 5 star for the food and service. That being said it's fast food. I don't like eating in fast food establishments, so I always get it to go. The flour taco original is so good! Or the beef or pork enchiladas. The nachos are made with flour chips. For dessert grab a churro. read more

Omg the tacos. I don't live in Des Moines but came to visit friends and they suggested we go here for lunch. Typically I don't like general tacos so didn't place in ordering them, but they told me I had to. I'm sooooo glad I did. The tacos were out of this world. I'm so sad we don't have this place where I live and will absolutely be coming back every time I'm in Des Moines now. To make up for it a little, I bought a bottle of their awesome hot sauce. Sooooo good! read more

none of our food was made right paid almost $56 for food that way made wrong not once but twice ‍ Definitely not returning !

Shit taste like Taco Bell it was disgusting. Made my stomach hurt. Was not authentic at all

I was visiting from Chicago, and everyone was telling me I HAD to try Tasty Tacos...but I must say I'm disappointed. I had two chicken tacos on flour tortillas (they only came with lettuce and shredded cheese) and it was SO bland. The only good part was their homemade salsa that was on top of every table there. That was the only reason I finished my tacos (that and I was starving). In my opinion the flour tortilla was mushy, they should have added slat and pepper to their chicken, and their quesadilla is literally a flour tortilla microwaved with cheese. SO gross. read more

I haven't been here for 20+ years. I didn't like it then and I don't like it now. My husband on the other hand loves it. He had 2 tacos and I had the chicken taco salad. I do love the red sauce. Great Tacos! I read that this place was a great local chain of Taco shops. Those reports are correct. The Flour tacos had a very unique fluffy shell, just excellent, way better than the normal flat tortilla. These shells were definitely home made and fresh. The ingredients were fresh and tasty. The Tasty Taters were great, basically tater tots with Mexican seasoning. Whenever I'm the Des Moines area from now on this my go to place for great tacos! read more

My all-time favorite restaurant. I grew up in DSM but haven't lived here in 30 years. I come back every few years and I look forward to eating at tasty tacos more than I do seeing family members. 3.5 not bad! A local spot that a local told me about. He swears by their tacos! He says that this is the only place you can get it at. You walk up to the counter and place your order, and wait for your number to be called. It seemed as if it was a hangout for the locals when they go get tacos. I think the seasoning was pretty good (chicken tacos). The shell itself, was like soft, and not burrito like shells. It was interesting, and I would probably try it again if I came back. read more

IDK who would give TT a bad review. It's one of the best places in Des Moines. When your Family comes to town, take them. I ordered the orignal beef tacos. The shell is an interesting creation, much like an Indian taco shell. They stuffed that shell full of a pile of meat and veggies. It was delicious. I love Tasty Tacos. I literally grew up on these. Every time I go back home I have to go at least twice. When I was a kid they had a limited menu and used to only do the original and a bean taco but now they have so much more. My favorite is the classic original with a boat load of cheese and lettuce. I in addition to their amazing hot sauce I like to add a little sour cream on mine. They are so filling. You get stuffed to the brim with this awesome subtle flavor. Others may not agree but I like when the bread gets a little soggy from the beef sauce. I feel like it really absorbs the flavor of the meat. A lot of other family and friends love the enchiladas and taco salads. From looking at the menu they have a variety of sides including your standards such as rice and bean but now they include items like onion rings and cheese curds. I really like that they're embracing the Midwest culinary tries and making it their own. As the slogan says: Nada Es Imposible! I love TT so much that I used to sneak out of class at East High just to grab one. Hey it was open campus! read more

Tasty Tacos - Flour engulfed goodness surrounds mouds if mea mouth explosions of deliciousness. - Mexican Near Me - Des Moines, Iowa

This is the most delicious comfort food you will ever enjoy. What more can I say about a pillowy soft flour tortilla, which will become the bed for your wildest dreams of ground beef and pinto beans. The cheese, the salsa --- it's all going to combine for the greatest taco experience of your life. The true test to know if someone is from Des Moines is to ask them if they like Tasty Tacos. If they say no, they are not really from Des Moines. These are not street tacos, so don't walk in expecting that - and it's nothing like what you would get at a fast food taco place. It is it's own wonderful gift to Des Moines, and I feel so blessed to live here and enjoy it!! read more

I don't get it. I really don't. It's a DSM staple, but the food is pretty bland for Americanized Mexican food. It's not overly expensive but not a great value either. Outside of the fried taco shells (because who doesn't love fried carbs), I don't really understand the appeal. I mean if you want a Mid-Western take on Mexican you could get something better at Taco Johns and there are a number of Mexican restaurants in the area with more flavorful authentic items. read more

Simple, fried, fast. Not the healthiest selection, but they do it well every time. The fried tortilla of their tacos makes a big step up from a humble standard taco. The chicken tacos are pretty good, but the 'original' (ground beef, seasoning, and whole beans) is really hard to beat. The guy at the register is sharp as a whip and has a great radio voice. The appeal to this place is so strong you'll find construction workers passing salsa bottles over to suited businessmen in ties. read more

Due to Yelp reviews, I was under the impresion that is the best Des Moines had to offer for lunch options. If it is, I'm very sad for Des Moines. I got the original, because it's what's recommended. It was just alright. I wasn't a big fan of the deep fried taco shell aka chalupa shell. It wasn't overly greasy or sloppy, but I just found it all very flavorless. I also got some fried stuffed jalapenos, which were great, but straight from the freezer as expected. The interior is remeniscent of a "town house of pizze" type place. pretty run down with no real decor other than the front counter and some of those two in one benches + tables. Overall I was underwhelmed by the hype, but I do agree that this place is a different kind of taco joint and I have to give it props for originality in the tacos. read more

Every time me or my family go to Iowa to visit family this is our first stop. Our family LOVES Tasty Tacos. What is not to like? Deep fried crispy flower shell's, fresh shredded lettuces, homemade everything, all the tasty meats. I also love their nachos, they have the same deep fried crispy flower shells for chips, and delicious golden liquid cheese... yum... yes this place will clog your arteries but you have to go for it. This is also a local mom and pop shop that have come really far. What use to be a house on a corner selling their famous tacos is now a huge business. I love stories like that. read more
