I read some reviews so I thought I'd stop by for dinner with my family. The ribs tastes great, quaso fries were a lot and also tasted great. A few negatives, I was expecting a restaurant and it ended up being 3 picnic tables inside thats it. The chicken was crispy and hard to bite into, the drinks are expensive $5 for a can!! Toilets are outside around the back inside the shops. Id stop back again but wouldn't go out of my way. read more

Let me say at the outset that there is absolutely nothing fancy about this place. Don't worry about turning up in shorts and thongs, you will be fine. Food is served in cardboard boxes with plastic cutlery. But the food is fantastic. Super tender and wonderfully smokey covered in bbq sauce. Huge portions. They even beat my teenage sons endless appetite. So much meat. Vegetarians be warned - there is nothing on the menu that doesn't involve meat. Service was great..they showered us with extra food when they realised we were first timers and insisted on us trying everything. We will be back. read more

"There's nothing like a nice piece of hickory" The iconic preacher uttered this immortal line whilst wielding a headless axe handle after trouncing 5 hoods with it. This is how badass I felt strolling into Taste of Texas, as the smell of hickory hit my nostrils; sidling up to the counter with my gunslinger gait and that Eastwood squint as I eyed off the menu... Then they told us they were too busy that night to seat us, and I quickly reverted to Lloyd from Dumb 'n' Dumber sucking on my thumb and wishing for my happy place. Luckily for me I was accompanied by a vision of loveliness, and spaces on the picnic bench seats magically appeared as her smile dazzled the diners. That's the great thing about this place. Whilst it most certainly looks like take-away is your best option, it doesn't have to be, as everyone is in such a happy food frenzy, they are more than willing to squeeze you in so you can join the communal experience. You'll salivate whilst you are sitting, waiting, watching the others devour their delicious BBQ grub... But you won't be waiting long as the service is pretty fast. I opted for The Stampede - A tasting box chock full of mouth-watering BBQ ribs, Texas beef, hickory lamb, and smoked sausage. On the side (comes with all orders) potato salad, coleslaw, BBQ sauce, dinner roll and a serrano pepper. Here's the wow factor: - The meat is so off the charts good, it is the finest BBQ you will taste outside of Texas. - The coleslaw rivalled the colonels in crunchy sweet deliciousness. - The hickory-infused BBQ sauce is so flavourful you will want to buy a bottle of it . Here's the area of improvement: - The potato salad was "meh". My mum makes the world's best and this wasn't even in the same league let alone ballpark. Neither myself nor my companion finished the potato salad, it's probably the one thing they should leave off the menu. read more

Holy Smokey goodness! This place is easy to walk right by. It's a tiny place and the room quickly fills with smoke - it'll get you salivating in no time. There is a heavy stream of orders coming in via the phone for delivery and an even heavier stream of people ordering take out. We dined in. Ugh, can I just say it was great and be done with this review? Writing it up is making me hungry again thinking about the food. The hickory smoked ribs were the best thing of the night. The smokey flavour...it was smokey and it was delicious. The spicy wings were a little disappointing. The flavours were all there, the blue cheese sauce was bluer than I'm used to but I actually liked it! I have a confession to make, I rarely eat meat. Don't let the furry face & bicycles fool you though, I have urges, meaty urges and when I succumb to them it's all in until I'm in a sweaty meat fueled coma. Not any old meat will do though, it's got to be some pretty good stuff to entice me & it doesn't come more drippingly glorious then they serve in this diminutive temple to all things meaty. I'm not kiddding about the only non-meat item on the menu is the soft drinks but I've never come across juicier smokier meat then theirs & the sauces, sides, pickles & slaw cap it off to perfection. The menu isn't huge consisting of steaks, ribs, dogs, fries & wings but what they do they do to perfection so the vegans out there can keep peddling but if you worship at the alter of meat this is the holy land. read more

Attention primal carnivores!! Forget your forks and your knives cause this place right here is your true calling. Get your caveman fix here in 3 simple steps: 1. Walk up to counter 2. Order the Stampede (or Bonanza or Pulled Pork burger .. dear god this looked good) and a side of fries 3. Sit down and wait If you're a walk-in like we were, and the lady at the counter happens to tell you they're fully booked... Do not be fooled - she lies. Just squeeze yourself in, do what you have to do because you won't want to pass up on this feast!! OK straight off the bat - this isn't a huge place, in fact, it's rather tiny so yes it can get squishy but this does not warrant any minus stars. Next, the smell in here, OH MY the smell - its all smokey and meaty and BBQey .. such a clever marketing tactic - it truly is meat nirvana!! I remember at one point looking over at my fellow carnivore and I thought - yep this moment right here, try and beat it. If this was my last meal on earth, I'd be pretty chuffed. We both agreed, Salt Lick in Texas clearly trumps this place (both taste and vibe) but for an itty bitty place in the burb of Waitara, Taste of Texas, you come pretty close buddy. The Hot wings are just that Hot, my hubby loves them! I am more a medium fan myself and the sauce is true buffalo style. The ribs are tender and well cooked, they do come with piles of chips and coleslaw. Seating is a premium with only 3 tables and sharing with strangers is often the norm. Food comes in non eco friendly styrofoam containers with bamboo cutlery. The service is greatly lacking the girls never smile and taking your order looks like a chore. read more

I'm not sure if it's the restaurant's fault or Yelp's fault but it shows they are open for lunch 11:30am-2pm... well after driving 30+mins looking forward to trying this place for a long time, it was closed (Wednesday 12:10pm). Another site indicates it's only open 6pm - 9pm. Hopefully we can try it sometime and give a higher rating, in the meantime update the business hours for future customers! read more

Spoiler Alert - House of Cards. D1 insisted I start watching House of Cards. The premise is that the American President is a murderous bisexual who urinates on his fathers grave, plays video games and who really like ribs. Right. The worst thing Francis ever did was to abandon Freddies Ribs leading to Freddie becoming a gardener instead of cooking the best ribs in Washington. Now that was bad. Some of Yelps Legends have posted on this place and I had to try it when I saw it was across the road from D2's work. Got a Rib Bonanza full rack for $35. They assured me when I rang that it would easily feed a whole family. I am sorry to say I was a little underwhelmed. I wonder if they made a mistake and gave me a half rack because there were only about 12 ribs in the box, together with a small tub of fairly plain coleslaw and some good shoestring chippies. The ribs were really good which is the reason it gets four stars. Smokey hickory and a good BBQ sauce. There was no beef on the night I went, possibly because beef prices at the moment are higher than platinum. Despite being told the order would take 15 minutes it instead took over 40 minutes but the place was packed and there was a queue of Texans waiting so I understand the delay. Because Maria has given it 5 stars I will give it another go - maybe not on a cold Sunday night when half of the North Shore decided Taste of Texas would be a good plan. read more

The old taste of Texas before they moved would have gotten 5 stars. Portion sizes are smaller since, while prices are higher. Amazing meat. The ribs, sausage, pork, everything is done perfectly. Really great American ribs experience! Very friendly and accommodating staff - definitely worth a visit with a bunch of hungry teenagers! Our 16 year old loved it! Having lived in Texas, real Texan BBQ is a rare find in Australia. This is amazing! The food is great, the atmosphere is casual and very homey. We go back fortnightly. It's not a cheap eat but in every respect you always get what you pay for and this is a gastronomic pleasure to eat! read more

I understand that you only make a certain amount of BBQ per day, but what about keeping some of that food so that your other customers can enjoy? I am American, so I take BBQ and customer service seriously. First, the food is so-so, very average by my standards and compared to other US style BBQ I have had in the past here in Australia. We were keen to try this place and ordered food for pick up. Be careful if ordering on-line, the menulog descriptions, which Taste of Texas does write themselves, are very confusing, and our order was totally wrong. We thought we were ordering a side of tri-tip and got a sanga instead. Ordered brisket and it was covered in cheese and onion. WTF??? Called to discuss order and got some of the worst customer service in the state! Just say sorry geez! NEVER AGAIN--you blew it Taste of Texas!!! read more

We had Sunday lunch here. The Buffalo wings were as good as any as you get in the USA. These would not be out of place in upstate New York. Ribs were great and the smoked beef was out of this world. The diced onions, pickles and jalapenos on top were a nice touch. The BBQ sauce was a bit too sweet for my taste. However, my taste buds are generally anti-sweets so I can see this being very yummy to most people. Was too full to try the cole slaw :( read more
