Great food, great service, good price and classy atmosphere. We had the garlic shrimps, bacalhau, and octopus carpaccio. The best meal we have had since arriving in Portugal a week ago. We took our waiter's recommendation to add the bread to soak up the sauce from garlic shrimp... outstanding. We like the sauce in the octopus carpaccio but I think it can be improved by using larger octopus cubes instead of thin slices (of course it would no longer be "carpaccio"). Per my personal opinion, the octopus didn't add texture nor flavor to the dish. Our waiter Rubio is super friendly. He gave us recommendation for the location to see "the best sunset in the world". We couldn't not have asked for better service or food than this! The staff, Fabio and Andre were excellent. The chef of this establishment has an excellent vision and it is obvious he knows flavor profiles well, because the combinations made were excellent. They had a menu for Easter that included a soup that was with leeks and green apples that was something I would never think of linking together yet worked so well!! It was really surprising and impressive. They also ran out of one of their staples on the menu, which was a mushroom dish and the chef improvised and made instead a grilled celery root "steak" of a piece of celery o didn't even know was edible!! The texture and flavor was soooo good! So I learned something new too! As far as our starter, we had their house suggestion which consisted of a butter infused with orange and honey that was to die for. It also included a chicken salad that was something light but super tasty and a tuna (they call it pate-we call it salad) that my son couldn't stop eating and was begging for more! Our Main dishes were the pork belly, (which I have never had a better one anywhere in my life), my son had the black linguini with seafood (that was packed with amazing seafood) and my husband had the cod fish with mashed potatoes. My mother in law had the grilled celery root steak. Unfortunately I couldn't try, my sons because I'm allergic to shellfish, but everyone else at the table tried it and said it was amazing. I tried just my husband mashed potatoes and they were better than my own mashed potatoes and everyone that's tried my taters say they're the best-so props to the chef again!! We paired our meal with an excellent wine and the staff suggested another wine to us too for our next visit or to purchase elsewhere. We orders Fabios suggestion of the pork belly, cod and black linguini and couldn't have been happier with what was offered. The restaurant was very cosy in design and we don't feel rushed. Unfortunately, we made a reservation last minute and there was only one table available left for that night which was by the front door, which wasn't the best seating because our party of 4-two sat looking out to the restaurant and street and two at their fridge with aged meat and bar, so 2 people didn't have the best view. So I felt bad for my husband and MIL, but my husband was made aware of this when we made the reservation. What was weird was that our reservation was at 7:30-we arrived at 7:15 and left at 9:30 and the two tables that sat 4 people had a reservation sign on them by the big windows looking outside, but no one sat there the entire time we were there. Eat here! Fabulous Portuguese restaurant situated in a mostly residential area a few minutes walk outside Old Town near ProPutting mini golf. Tasca Jota is solidly on my regular rotation. In true tasca form, Jota offers pratos do dia (special plates of the day). These always include a starter of bread, butter & olives, a choice of a few mains, drink (including wine, small beer) and coffee/tea for a set price. If you order one of these specials, there is usually one of the menu desserts offered that you can add on at an additional, but reduced, price. Pro Tip: The chocolate fudge cake with caramel and praline nuts is WOW. Decadent and rich. Most choices are cooked to order so don't be in a hurry here. The chef clearly takes great care to put out hot, fresh, delicious food. On my latest visit, I had turkey steak with mushroom sauce and rice. My husband had a vegetarian fritatta with a nice salad that had an awesome dressing. I tried that as well. Both dishes were excellent. My friend got fried, fresh cuttlefish with fries and enjoyed it. We finished by sharing the awesome chocolate fudge dessert along with lovely fresh mint tea, coffee. The newly remodeled space is beautiful and comfortable. This place was extraordinary! Let's start with the simple appetizers, olives, bread, and butter (but wait sweet potato butter) yep, of the chain. It had bits of sweet potato hiding in it but once you spread it on their baked daily French bread, shut the front and back door! Let's then move the tapas, crab truffles with a sweet tomato sauce on the bottom, shrimp polenta (creamy and fluffy). The chef has to be a mad scientist or a genius. Then the main course was a White Sea bass with a lite creamed sauce, I can't remember what the sauces were, but they paired so well with the fish. I forgot to ask, lol. This fish fell off the bone and was seasoned so well, much gratefulness to the chef. Dessert was a doubled white mouse paired with lemon gelato. My husband had a milk chocolate cake with peanut butter on the bottom paired with ice cream. It seems simple, but it was fantastic! We paired everything with a Verde wine. Listen, Tasca Joyt isn't a huge place, but when you have people lined up before it opens, that speaks volumes; make sure to get there early, about 5-10 mins before it opens, to secure a table, then order everything on the menu. Sweet little place in Lagos with great food! For off-season, they are closing from 1600-1800, so keep in mind if you're looking to eat between those hours. We arrived at 1545 and they were lovely about it, seating and serving us. Had 3 dishes and enjoyed them all. My wife wasn't extremely hungry and just wanted the eggs and Portuguese sausage starter. Server said it was small but, honestly, I think 3-4 could easily share as a starter. It was a bit undercooked for our liking but standard for Europe. I opted for Linguine Negro with seafood. I was very excited to try this restaurant, as it was on many lists as one of the best restaurants in Lagos. And I can confidently say that this is true. All the food I ate here was absolutely delicious and I'm so sad I had to go back home because I will forever be dreaming of the shrimp risotto from here Plates I got/shared: 1. Let's start with the Shrimp Risotto. I'm not even going to lie, this is one of the best dishes I've ever eaten. The flavor and freshness was spectacular and I want to go back to Lagos just to eat this dish again lol. 2. The Crunchy Squid Strips were so good. I don't normally eat squid, but I decided to try it at this restaurant, and I was very impressed. The sauce that comes with it was also yummy. Definitely get it. 3. Crab Truffles - these were so good that we ordered two orders. I could've devoured two entire orders myself. Enough said. Perfectly nice restaurant suggested by our hotel, as authentic Portuguese dining outside the scrum of the tourist district. We've been eating out in Spain & Portugal for 3 weeks now, so to say this restaurant is extraordinary would be real stretch. Food was average. Very good, but that's average in a sea of seafood restaurants. Space was unbelievably loud, between the raucous tables, the background music, and the throbbing hum of the air conditioners. Waitress was lovely, and sarcastically charming, but we had a full hour delay between our two appetizers (Cod Cerviche, very nice, and Fried Calamari, excellent), and our main courses (Pork Belly, crispy to the point of being unchewable, and Linguini Negro with Seafood, good but nothing extraordinary). Pretty sure our server gave our dishes away to a table who sat down a full 45 minutes after us, but she never acknowledged the delay or apologized. Still, we had no place else to be so a 2-1/2 dinner for two courses wasn't a deal breaker, but it wasn't great. Prices were considerably higher than many similar restaurants. That, and the delay in serving the main dish are the reasons for 3 stars. Otherwise, it's a very average place with decent food where you can get away from the tourists. read more

Love this place! Food is fantastic, venue was comfortable, service was awesome, prices offered good value and the live guitarist/singer sounded great! We had the octopus carpaccio, shrimp polenta, Black squid ink linguini with seafood, and suckling pig (which had been slow roasted for 12 hours yet prepared with a crispy skin and caramelized onion mash and apple quince). Everything savory was skillfully prepared and hit its mark and I would order everything again. 5/5 The only area for improvement I noticed was the dessert, specifically the red berries and lime cheesecake served in a jar. While still tasty, it was good but not great. 4/5 Be sure to make a reservation especially in the busy season (from May to September-ish). read more

My wife and I were in Lagos, Portugal for nine beautiful nights. On our last night we wandered near where we lived (we decided to not go to the old town) and found Tasca Jota. We sat outside where the temperature was in the low 60s Fahrenheit on December 26 (we're from Minnesota, so this was actually warm for us). We started the dinner off with a cocktail. I had the braised beef with mashed potatoes and my wife ordered the pork belly with a sweet potato puree. Both dishes were absolutely fantastic and well presented! We finished the evening off with port wine - my wife had a vintage port and I had a 20 year old Tawny - both were excellent. The people in the restaurant were very welcoming and the service was excellent. We will definitely dine here again. read more

Our meal at Tasca Jota was the best of our two week trip. Everything we had was much better and more flavorful than typical Portuguese restaurants surrounding the area. We couldn't find a menu online but decided to try it out and we're glad we did. We ordered the bread which came with garlic butter, shrimp pâté, and couscous cilantro salad. For starters we had prawns cooked with ginger and chili and goat cheese with jam and toasted almonds. For dinner we had a John Dory filet with romesco sauce and polenta and the black linguine with seafood. Everything was cooked to perfection and there was nothing left on our plates. It is a little off of the beaten path and was not full which made us nervous, although it had been recommended. No need to worry. There were tapas/ small plates to choose from as well as larger entrees. We shares multiple tapas starting with calamari and what they call crab truffles. Both quite tasty. The spicy prawns were to die for. It would be a crime to miss those. We finished with a fish cataplana which we enjoyed. A little slow to get the check but worth the wait, and the ten minute walk from the old Cetnro.
