While the books are organized into categories, be aware that there can be more than one section on the same topic in different parts of the store, possibly a reflection of different collections purchased by the owners at various times. So, for example, there are two separate natural history areas in two different rooms in the basement. I would give it 5 stars except that, at least in my own topics of interest, there's rarely any fresh stock, it's largely the books I saw on my first visit years ago--but that's probably also why the prices seem very reasonable. We do still find the occasional buried gem, and find other things, like antiques, to interest us, so it's worth stopping by!

Don't they know there are a lot of tourists in town for the holidays, for the Christmas lights, and for the hockey tournaments? They had a post-it note on the door stating it was too cold...but it was actually above 10 degrees and it was the warmest of the past week. And we were standing at their door with a pocket of money! Oh, well. My wife and I scheduled 2 days to checkout every antique store in Duluth, MN and Superior, WI. It was strictly a short up-north antique shopping vacation. I was bored standing in front of Antiques on 1st because this was our last stop of the day and I could actually see all the way to the back wall from the window. It looked like a lot of mostly run of the mill for antiques...and an extremely small square footage. I couldn't see any tags (because they were closed due to the cold!?) so I can't comment on prices. The coolest thing I saw was a Denoyer Geppert WWII aviation floor globe in the front window. I bought the same exact model globe 7 or 8 years ago at Retro Classics (in St.Paul) for $400. And I sold it last year on Ebay for $380. So I guess the 400 dollar range is about right. I don't know what Antiques on 1st is asking (since they were scared of the cold and NOT open!?). Still, the globe is a cool piece. These guys might be worth stopping if you're in the downtown area. The associates were clearly interested in helping customers who were dressed better than we were. We found a mattress we wanted and we were told it was the last one but we could have the floor model. We were fine with that and made the purchase and scheduled delivery. The store called on the day of delivery saying they needed to delay for a couple of days. On the day they did deliver, they arrived late with a completely different mattress than the one we purchased. We called the store immediately and told them we received the wrong mattress (extra firm rather than medium and a different brand). The store said that they were aware of the switch. During the delay in the delivery period, they sold the mattress we already paid for to another customer and delivered it to them. We were told the mattress we received was comparable in price and we should be fine with it. We explained that we didn't want a mattress that firm and and regardless of price it wasn't a suitable substitute. They told us to come in again and choose a different mattress. When we returned to the store we were treated like garbage. They gave us two mattress to choose from that were cheaper than the original. We chose one and it was eventually delivered and the mistake mattress taken away. We wrote to the manager of the store but never received any response. We then wrote to the corporate office and eventually got back a short note saying our concerns were forwarded to the store manager. No one bothered to contact us, no apologies. Management may have changed since this experience, but the execrable customer service was store wide and extends to corporate management. Today we went to a completely different store to purchase a new mattress and had an excellent experience that got us what we wanted and made us feel like valued customers. It was a night and day difference from the experience we got from Slumberland. We will write a positive review for the other business, but the good experience reminded us how Slumberland treated us and encouraged us to warn others away from giving their business to a company that treated us so badly.

The service technician came out and quickly assessed the problem and said that the part to repair the switch would take one to three months to arrive. We went back to the Hermantown location and explained our problem with the love seat to the salesperson and manager. Both individuals were very professional and willing to help us and ultimately provide us with a fair and reasonable accommodation. What could have been an unpleasant experience did not transpire because of their outstanding customer service.
