Antiques on Belknap is by far the best antique store in the Duluth, MN and the Superior, WI area!…read more My wife and I scheduled 2 days to visit EVERY antique store in Duluth and in Superior. We were able to visit all of them except for two, which closed early...because of cold weather...or whatever. When we finally got to Belknap I was amazed at the huge quantity of high quality items crammed into one small building! You have to look close, every square inch is packed with stuff. And don't forget to look up. There are some awesome larger items hanging from the rafters in the ceiling. The whole place is owned by a very nice woman named Janet. All of the merchandise is hers...no "antique mall" with hundreds of small vendors and their stupid little nick-nacks. It's all 100% Janet. This explains the quality. And it explains her willingness to carry a few larger items that you'd never see at a mall. My wife and I like big items. We bought a 1951 movie poster that's 7 feet wide and 2 feet tall with striking images and the original billboard scalloped frame. We also bought a 1930s flour advertising poster that's 4 feet wide and 1 foot tall with really cool graphics and shrink wrapped safely on a cardboard backing. Duluth Antique Marketplace just opened...all of the local antique stores said we should check them out and see what they're all about. No one we talked to had actually been there yet. I'd say that only one in 20 items in this store is actually an antique or something vintage. (But there seems to be more antiques in the basement.) DAM seems to mostly be a store with "up-cycled" merchandise, home-made crafts, reproduction antiques, and a few vintage items. I didn't see any hardcore high-end antiques. I saw a lot of things made out of painted wood, corrugated tin, pottery, and galvanized metal...you get the picture. Despite not really being a traditional antique store, I like what they're trying to do here. The store is large, bright, and everything is displayed nicely. There are a lot of bright, modern looking grays and whites. Everything still smells like new paint. There were two women scrambling around (The owners? Managers?) that we talked to quite a bit. Room to room, there is always something interesting to see. And the entire old basement is full of vintage furniture! It's just an amazing assortment they have here, and the owner was super kind and helpful as well. This is such a fun place to shop! I wish more people in Duluth knew about it.

While the books are organized into categories, be aware that there can be more than one section on the same topic in different parts of the store, possibly a reflection of different collections purchased by the owners at various times. So, for example, there are two separate natural history areas in two different rooms in the basement. I would give it 5 stars except that, at least in my own topics of interest, there's rarely any fresh stock, it's largely the books I saw on my first visit years ago--but that's probably also why the prices seem very reasonable. We do still find the occasional buried gem, and find other things, like antiques, to interest us, so it's worth stopping by!

For the life of me, I have no idea how these guys manage to pay rent in their fancy location on Canal Park Drive! They have a lot of little inexpensive bullshit -- low end nick nacks, cheap vintage items, and a few commonly available actual antiques. I was actually more interested in the MANY frames displayed in the back hallway walls, hanging from floor to ceiling. Most of the framed items seemed pretty junky. But I liked a few of the frames themselves. There's also a mountain of jelly beans and candy slices in clear bags in front of the checkout desk. There are no labels on anything. More than likely, this is repackaged stuff from the local supermarket. If I wanted to buy some mystery candy, I'd probably just go to Target or Walmart and get some stuff with labels...cheaper and I know what the heck I'm eating. The lady running the store (not the owner) was very, very, very nice. We actually felt guilty about how much time she spent with us. So we spent a couple of bucks on a little jewelry charm. But we wouldn't ever come back again to this store. This was our last stop on our 2 day antique store shopping trip to Duluth and Superior. And this last store was a letdown. It wasn't the worst.
