Taqueria Maya is not in my neighborhood and I pass four other Mexican restaurants before I arrive at their location. So sometimes, I forget about them and I need to change that. Because, when I do come, I enjoy my experience. The other day I stopped in for lunch and in the foyer, they had a board with weekly specials. One of the specials was, Shrimp Chimichanga. That made my decision real easy. Shrimp Tacos and Quesadillas are my favorite Mexican foods, so why not try a Chimichanga. It came with Refried Beans and Rice. It also has small servings of Guacamole and Sour Cream. The shrimp inside my Chimichanga were good sized and if memory serves me right, there were 8 stuffed inside. If not 8, it was 6 and it filled it to the brim. I love it when an entree has Guacamole, that way you can use it with your chips as you enjoy your entree. It also allows me to order good ole White Cheese Dip at the beginning, to enjoy with the complimentary Chips and Salsa. When I was served mine, the chips were still warm. Nothing beats a fresh warm chip dipped in salsa and white cheese. Dining alone makes it acceptable to double dip mixing the two together. A Margarita was my adult beverage of choice. I enjoyed a Jumbo sized and it lasted me through my appetizer and entree. To my delight, it was served to me in a frosted Margarita glass. I was frosted better than some beer mugs I have had. My server was friendly and attentive. In addition to waiting on tables, he was busy wrapping silverware and his multi-tasking did not take away from quality service. I plan to keep Taqueria Maya in my rotation of Mexican restaurants. It's worth the drive and worth passing by some of their competitors, to enjoy their quality of food. read more

Friday night and this small restaurant was packed! We were seated as soon as we walked in and waited about 15-20 minutes for our food. The service was good and the servers were friendly. The birria that I ordered wasn't necessarily the best, but I'd certainly go back to try something else. read more

I can't speak to dine in, as we've solely done carry out - but carry out is fabulous! Street tacos are $2.99 each, the chicken is my favorite. The tacos were hot and fresh. Asked for extra limes and they did NOT disappoint! All orders over $10 include chips and salsa at no extra cost. They included compostable flatware, and bagged everything up nicely. Normally I would say this was my favorite Mexican restaurant but tonight I called to place an order, the lady says they are out of Birria and that's what I order so I said let me look at the menu and call you right back. They close at 9 pm. It was 740 when I called. I called right back, less than 5 minutes and the same lady says "I'm sorry, we've decided to close early, I can't take your order". Like you couldn't say that the first time when I called? Or better yet, take my damn order, make my food and send my on my way..it's not like I was eating there. This pissed me off so bad that you might and probably will lose my business and my family's business. That is not professional one bit. I am pissed. read more

Just figured out we're a five minute walk to excellent street tacos! Really liked the Al pastor. Good salads, great chips and salsa. My partner got a shrimp and mushroom platter and it was so well seasoned. I snuck a few bites of mushrooms and oh my gosh: stuff a taco with those please. We'll be back- often! Nice local Mexican food. They also do a mean burrito at the Saturday Alton Farmer's Market. The ambience of the restaurant is clean and colorful. We have had takeout 3x and dined in house once. It's been a good experience mostly. However, today was not. They were busy and my order was messed up to a point where I found it inedible. My food had been sitting a long time. The green sauce was a baked in slight smear. The meat was ground beef instead of pulled chicken. We did not get the beans and rice. It is now in the trash. I will ensure they are not busy if I order from them again. read more

I always order delivery. Food has always been great. Except lately it's hit or miss. Today 9.15- EVERYTHING IS WATERED DOWN. The Birria ramen- watered down and not as rich as other days, but still good. My salsa is watered down with no chunk in site. All of this was ok until I got to the beans and rice. They're watered down too. If that's even possible, AND over salted. Everything is lighter in color than normal and much more runny if that makes sence. I this place has been a 10/10 for me for most orders. Lately it's fallen to the 8/10. It's still good. Just not worth paying delivery fees for anymore. I don't know what or who's changed. But the food is a clear indication that something has. Still worth a try though. Pretty decent Mexican for the area. read more

Been here once specifically for their Birria tacos and was not disappointed!! I've been a Pancho's fan and consider them the pinnacle of local Mexican cuisine but I can see me sneaking away for some of these tasty tacos...they also have an excellent bourbon collection so if you aren't in the mood for a fishbowl margarita....get u a good pour of the good stuff!! The foods okay but they only gave us 2 bowls for the salsa and there were 3 ppl and they gave a drunk person more alcohol.

Growing up in the Alton area, I had no clue what Mexican food really was. The advent of national food chains did not help this situation. Having lived in the southwest or in Urban Mexican immigrant neighborhoods for many years and having spent a fair amount of time in the interior of Mexico, I've been able to enjoy some really good authentic Mexican cooking. I am delighted to have such a place in my hometown for when I come back to visit. Delicious, fresh, unpretentious family cooking. read more
