When Ka Ka Lok appeared next to long standing Chinese / Malaysian restaurant Asia Style with its bright red signage and funky Chinese style cartoon logo I thought to myself, "ooft that's brave opening up next to a Glasgow institution". But, to my delight, this place more than stood up for itself. Although the restaurant is rather big and sparse looking, it was busy and loud enough, with a regular turnover of local Chinese customers to give the place a good vibe. We were warmly greeted on arrival and taken to our table. The waitress promptly gave us two menus to look over, one an 'English' menu and the other a 'Chinese' one. The English menu contained your typical Black Bean / Sichuan / Sweet & Sour type dishes, probably curated for the westerners. Not Fish & Chips and Chicken Pies as I had originally imagined being on an 'English' menu. The Chinese menu was a Hong Kong style fare, with more traditional dishes such as Clay Pot stews, seafood/fish dishes, roasts etc. Needless to say we all ordered from the Chinese menu and the staff were ever so friendly in helping us to make our decisions. In fact the owner was key to helping us have a great meal as he picked out some great dished for us. We opted for a dozen dumplings to nibble on as an appetiser, which were delicious. Then a feast of Clay Pot dishes arrived, including aubergine and salt fish, XO Seafood, an outstanding and tender beef stew, three kind roast containing pork belly / char sui / duck, Singapore style noodles and a giant vat of rice. It has to be said the quality of the food and ingredients was second to none and the portions were hugely generous. Again the owner and his staff made us feel incredibly welcome and they kept checking up on us to make sure we were happy with the food. It definitely is a bit lairy so if you're not one for karaoke or dancing on tables then give this one a miss but if you're brave enough it's an experience you will never forget! There seems to be a programme here, so I'll let you know how my evening played out; Step 1: We were shown to our table and as it was Christmas time it was decorated with the usual; tinsel, mini tree, bobbles and the like. We were then asked what drinks we liked and we each ordered the usual vodka coke, etc. Step 2: When the drinks arrived the waiters brought with them a cocktail in a glass that was probably around three foot tall, I kid you not. It was nearly taller than me and I had to stand on the chair to drink out of it with the equally massive straw. Step 3: Whilst taking the order for our meal, they brought a huge box of cowboy hats and gave us all one. I wasn't drunk enough by this point so did feel a little odd but everyone was getting into the swing of things so it was all good. Meanwhile two karaoke hosts were belting out Whitney Houston numbers and reminding us to get our requests in. Step 4: Each table was getting called up to sing so we had to get up and give it our all on the dance floor. Step 5: Dinner arrived, but with it they brought party poppers and told us to get on the chairs and dance. I was really hungry by this point and kind of just wanted to eat my meal. Step 6: In between popping party poppers, pulling crackers and moving the seat so other people at the table could get up to do a bit of karaoke I was able to eat my meal, I went for sweet and sour chicken and it was surprisingly good. I just assumed that all the drama was just to put your mind off how bad the food was. But no, no it was delicious! Step 7: As desserts were being brought out one of the waiters was grabbing random people from each table and he took them upstairs. Five minutes later they all re-appeared in fancy dress; Batman, Batwoman, Spiderman... they were all there jumping around on the dance floor singing karaoke some looking more bemused than others. Step 8: Each person in the place (it holds around 100) was then given a can of silly string each and the spraying began! There was silly string everywhere, in my hair, in my half eaten ice-cream (oh well), on the walls, in the huge cocktail glass, just everywhere! Step 9: This is the bit I found strangest of all... All the ladies were told to stand on their chairs and then a couple of waiters came out with a leaf blower and started blowing up everyone's skirts, Thankfully I had tights on but other people didn't, oh dear. I couldn't actually believe this was happening, it was hilarious in an odd peeping tom kind of way. Step 10: All the while people are blaring out karaoke in the background and I was starting to feel more than a little bit tired. As I've said in reviews before, I love a chinese that offers vegetarians something other than just vegetables in a sauce and Cathay Cuisine has the most to offer vegetarian diners in Glasgow in my opinion! Cathay Cuisine is more than just a chinese, they also offer Japanese, Malaysian and Thai dishes, as well as traditional "british" chinese takeaway fare. My usual order consists of fried beancurd and dip (Just Eat will give you an option of dips, don't bother choosing, you always get sweet chili!), fried rice and salt and chilli chips. I also really like the mini spring rolls, they're really crispy and crunchy! I'm also a fan of their salt and chilli beancurd and the sweet and sour aubergine in batter. I've never ordered a dish from here I didn't like! The deep fried beancurd can be a bit hit and miss, last time I ordered it was a bit dry, so I'd recommend ordering a sauce to go with it. I usually get the satay sauce which is a tad on the spicy side. One thing to keep in mind is that the portion sizes here are extremely large! A large rice is more than enough to feed two. A portion of salt and chilli chips will arrive, I kid you not, in a small pizza box, enough to feed four! Great if you are fully prepared for a feast or if you're ordering for a large group, but keep this in mind if you're only ordering for two people (or one person, don't judge me!). Their menu is enormous so I challenge anyone to not find a dish! I usually order from the Cathcart Road branch and deliveries can take up to an hour, so order in plenty of time!!
