I've known Bobbie Oliver for over 20 years. Coincidentally I've also been "quitting comedy" for about the same amount of time! I needed to just get back to the basics, so I took her writing class- and what I got was so much more. Bobbie's wit is endless, and her knowledge of the craft comes from years of experience. She brilliantly managed to take the gritty underside of LA comedy and turn Tao Comedy Studio into something that feels equal parts comedy club, creative sanctuary and really cool place you suddenly want to hang out all the time. The showroom is gorgeous, the patio is immaculate vibe territory and bathrooms so clean you can eat off of the floor! Tao is also welcoming to everyone, whether you're seasoned, a terrified first timer or someone who keeps retiring and crawling back for more. January 2022 - We went in a Friday Open Mic night. There were a couple of heat lamps but we sat on the side and it was still quite cold, they tried their best though. For the most part everyone was as social distanced as they could be. The set up is in their outdoor patio area. You have to go 30 minutes earlier before the show to sign up if you want to perform! It's a very intimate setting, about 30 ish people there I'd say. Great place for comics to try out their jokes! It was a friendly crowd and there was no heckling. The place offers comedian workshops as well! $5 per person and it comes with canned beer, soda, wine, or water. read more

You can tell Bobbie Oliver puts her heart into the space with the continuous improvements to the space and growing community. The open mic is a safe space welcoming with a women-only mic, queer night, and classes that'll help rookies and veterans with performing and joke-crafting. There's snacks and drinks available at every mic and the facilities are always clean. With 2 indoor spaces and a backyard patio for smoking, this is one of the better parts of LA to do comedy whether you're new or a veteran. This is a beloved comedy studio in Los Angeles, owned by Bobbie Oliver & Chris Oliver, two of the nicest people in the scene. Tao is very friendly to women, POC and LGBTQ performers, and it's a great alternative to the male-dominated, misogynistic stages that allow misconduct and bullying. Tao holds shows, open mics, and a yearly comedy festival. The space is hip and clean and it is mostly easy to get parking on Western in the evening. Recently, the owners have expanded the space, and it'll be exciting to see what they do with the new room. Tao also offers classes and workshops taught by Bobbie, and the multi-week course ends with a show at the venue. Definitely worth checking out if you are new to comedy or want to hone your chops. read more

Super supportive space! Bobbie Oliver and her husband Chris have created a comedy community that's warm and welcoming for all, especially beginner comics. The open mics at Tao Comedy Studio are always a good time. The comics who show up tend to be friendly, respectful, and encouraging. For the most part, they actually watch your set instead of just looking at their phone and waiting for their turn. It's a great spot to test new material or even just riff and practice being on stage. The regular crowd tends to be very diverse, too, which is a refreshing change from other open mics and is helpful for seeing how your jokes land with different people. They have a women-only mic on Mondays and an LGBTQ + Allies mic on Tuesdays. Bobbie Oliver also teaches comedy classes and workshops, which are great for newbies as well as more experienced comics looking to sharpen their acts. A note on PARKING: Don't be afraid! Tao Comedy Studio is located in one of the rare sections of Koreatown where you can actually find decent street parking, and the meters on Western are free after 6pm. This comedy studio/club is home to comedians of all kinds, be they professionals or up and comers. The shows here are diverse and there is a really supportive vibe. There are LGBTQ+ themed shows and mics, women only mics and shows, and there's a yearly comedy festival called The Riot Grrrl Festival that's always a blast! The owners are very funny comedians and Bobbie Oliver (owner) teaches comedy there as well. Her book The Tao Of Comedy is excellent. There's something for everyone at this studio. LOVED this place! Came here 9/21/19 with my best friend. It was our first time at this comedy club and we didn't know what to expect. Bobbie, the co-owner, was super nice and greeted us at the door. Entrance costs $10 (which included a drink - either nonalcoholic or alcohol). The place was pretty small, but it was a very nice, intimate venue. We came a little late but were able to watch about 2.5 hrs of stand-up comedy. The comedians were diverse and had a good variety of jokes. Most of them were hilarious!
