The show was funny, with talented comedian actors. There is strong camaraderie among them and the behind the scenes support crew. The theater is well air conditioned, with comfortable seats, a friendly ticket office employee, and clean bathrooms. I saw an afternoon show for $12. The only downside is scarce parking. Many thanks to the Yelper's tip to park 2 blocks south of Melrose, with signs only for street cleaning days. Finding a spot at night would be more challenging unless you luck out. read more

The theater is a nice place to come watch comedy with friends. The show had its opening night when we went which was quite apparent. The improvisational work was the highlight, and we were hoping for more improv rather than sketches (which ended up being the majority), but we did not realize what we signed up for apparently. Such an amazing LA activity! We went and saw the Wednesday "crazy Joe show" and it was so unique and fun. Incredibly high energy improv that is non stop! I've never seen anything like it. I live right around the corner from The Groundlings and it took some time for me to go there. I did move around COVID time so there was that but after they reopened it took an out of town visitor to get me to buy tickets for their Friday night show. I thought the Groundlings show would be an improv show, figuring their notoriety for it. However, it was a scripted show and for a moment I was disappointed, but only for a moment. The sketches were varied and all funny and the cast were all great. There was one sketch in particular though, it was a like a mini one man show which was as memorable as it was hilarious. I don't want to spoil it in case they decide to run the show again but rest assured it will leave an impression. read more

Came in for an improv show with a group of five. They seat everyone at one time, so the small lobby does become a bit crowded before the show. While even the seats for late-comers are good, I would would recommend coming early to get the best seats. We found Adopt-A-Groundling to be overall a very funny show, but perhaps two or three of the sketches fell flat for me. Certainly worth going at the low ticket price. read more

Jumping off from an online Groundlings event, I can't wait for this improv comedy to adapt to the pandemic world. This landmark destination has been delivering improv for decades, and have coloured up my many late night here for comedy show with friends. This legendary club has launched many comedians like Conan and Lisa Kudrow, and its longlasting curriculum seems to draw a certain traditional type of humour. Compared to other comedy clubs, the crew here here seem a few steps away from a more diverse cast that represent all slices of LA. The convenient location among shopping and dining make for the perfect evening activity with friends, and even as a tailgate kickoff before a night out on Melrose. I've been to the groundlings a couple of times and seen a couple different sketch nights and one improv night. The sketch nights are really good and funny, but the improv show I saw last night was by far my favorite. The actors are so so creative in how they choose to take the prompts. What I've often noticed with inexperienced improv groups is that they seem to be somewhat competitive striving for the most attention and laughs from the audience. This did not have that at all! Love the cozy ambiance and intimate setting. Came to see my friend Lory Tatoulian perform just before Christmas. My only critique is that they can be a little bit more descriptive and explanatory in what happens when you arrive, wait in line, etc. Bit confusing for people to wait in the cold. read more

Came here for Cookin' with GAS for the first time due to one of the performers posting on his social media the day off. Boy was I happy I got myself a ticket! The performances were excellent all around and I had so many belly laughs. I really liked the venue too and during intermission they sold snacks and drinks. But after accidently purchasing my ticket for the wrong date, the team at the groundlings was very helpful in accommodating a transfer of my ticket to the correct date since it was a couple days before the show. This review is for the Late Show on Friday nights at 10pm. I've been to plenty of Improv/ Sketch shows, but this one topped them all. It reminded me of an SNL sketch. There were about 5-7 mini sketches and some of the actors played multiple characters for different sketches, but this was legit. They had costume changes and wig/ wardrobe changes. There was a band playing in between each set and it was just hilarious. The show was about and hour and half long and there was a 10/15 minute intermission. They also sold crafty. The level of acting was beyond what I expected. It was so good and had me laughing!! I can't wait to catch another show here! Great for a date night or girls night out! read more

Unfortunately they are practicing outdated policies. Requiring vaccine cards to get in the theater. Our vax cards are from March 2021, so completely unnecessary and irrelevant to show to enter a show in August 2022. I haven't been here in over 30 years and my husband had never been here. I'm sorry it's taken so long to return. Tonights Show was was fantastic. Have no idea why tonight's show was titled Attorneys at Law. Cancelling the gym membership, Alexa, the threesome, picking the announcer, truck driver school, were my favorites. It was fun to do something besides a movie. We found free parking down the street. Only reason I didn't give 5 stars was because of the lack of guidance to help everyone find a seat. It's a small theater and people just stopped on the stairs leading up to the last rows of seats. I guess they believe if they just stand and block the stairs groups of empty seats will appear for them. I don't understand why seats can't be assigned when tickets are reserved and purchased. Until then, come early to be one of the first to enter especially if you come in a group. read more

Fun shows. There are many success stories from this place, as shown on the walls of their lobby through picture frames. Many that are or were on Saturday Night Live. I'll be honest. Shows are a hit-or-miss. There are some shows I enjoy much more than others. But then again, I've only been here twice. Fortunately, regardless of how the show is, I definitely appreciate the crowd flow of this place, both before the beginning and after the end of the show. Online tickets are easy to purchase, and the only things we need to worry about is getting there on time and finding parking. I'm not as familiar with the specific line-ups or types of shows they feature, but I bet it's worth researching a little bit before choosing which show to attend. In the grand scheme, it can be a bit of a crapshoot, and there's no sure way to predict a good or bad show. They'll all certainly do the best they can regardless of the night. FYI: - No alcohol, if you've been wondering. I figure if they haven't started to offer any after having been open for decades, we can't expect anything to change. - The theater is fairly small and holds maybe about 100 or so seats. - There is a live band, so if you're sensitive to loud sounds, just brace yourself. I personally love the live band and loud noises, but that's just me. - This isn't an opera, so don't be afraid to participate. I highly suggest outrageous ideas for scenes when the audience is prompted. read more

I've been coming here since 1998 and this place never disappoints. If you like to laugh to a point your belly hurts, this is your place. You get two hours of laughing and on some nights you will cry it's so funny. I say some nights because it's never the same. Make sure you get there early with LA traffic and all. There isn't a bad seat but if you don't care for live music, sit further up. The band is live and plays throughout. Can't be late - ever. This is the best entertainment you can get for $16 a seat! This is a small theater that packs a big punch. There is a cast of about ten people who rotates doing improv scenes. Suggestions come from the audience so be ready to participate. They used two of my ideas! The show was hysterical and we all got some great laughs in. No wonder these actors and actresses launch successful careers. My pet peeve about this place is that there are only two bathrooms. The building is old and it could really use a bit of a remodel but that seems common with venues like this. It didn't ruin the experience, but it was just vexing. One word: hilarious! This is the place where comedians like Melissa McCartney and Kristen Wiig have come from. The comics were sharp and there was rarely an unfunny joke or skit. The host was very engaging and all of the skits came from suggestions from the audience. In terms of the content, it was far reaching. I'd say definitely not for kids but it wasn't over the top. Caught a show at The Groundings theater on Melrose this past weekend - "Groundlings of '69"....a nostalgic look at decades past. Was HILARIOUS....one great performance after another. My friends and I laughed throughout...When we left, we debated and really couldn't choose a favorite "skit" as all were original and just really well done. I particularly liked Laird Macintosh's portrayal of a chain-smoking Walt Disney. I've been aware of The Groundlings for years, but rarely go out to "the theater" and it was a relative's visit that inspired this first-time experience - had no idea what I'd been missing and will come back again and again. 5 STARS!!! read more

Parking: DIFFICULT -- Pay attention to street signs. Streets surrounding the main st. are permit parking only. One street down is open residential parking. I came here for an intro to improv class. SAM is a rockstar because he took time to communicate and apologize for any frustration that my family and I may have experienced in trying to book a show.
