Intimate theater on Melrose. Came here recently to watch Baby Foot in the Henry Murray stage. It's so intimate that the hostess checking tickets knew audience members by name and you are literally right next to the actors. They offered snacks in the lobby but no food/drinks allowed when seated. For Baby Foot, they did have a talkback session where you could converse with the actors, which I loved the concept of but unfortunately couldn't make due to dinner reservations. Metered street parking. No valet available. We bought tickets online in advance. I didn't notice a box office. Overall, a great place to watch a show and really get in there right alongside the characters/actors. read more

This is a cute little theater that has a legacy of hosting great, famous actors. This theater reminded me of the little engine that could. The seating was comfortable and quite intimate. I loved the feeling because we were so close to the action. The sound was fantastic and they have a room with pictures from the casts of other plays. It was fun playing the game of who's that young kid who looks so familiar and finding out it was an actor that I knew quite well. There's also a piano in the room and I wanted to play it and was concerned about getting in and getting a good seat. No need to worry. They were all good seats, so I had my choice. Also, this theater is kind of a throwback to the little itty-bitty theaters of the past. I arrived and had to wait out front for them to let us in. They did allow me to visit the powder room and when I got out, they had opened the door. I was bummed until I went inside. I was able to find an aisle seat and avoided having the step over people to find a seat. It is open seating and even though everyone was seated, there was still plenty of space. More people came to fill up the other seats, and the play began. If I had to come back here, I wouldn't be upset. This is the little theater that could. read more

The Theater: This theater has been there since 1980's. Many pictures are displayed in the lobby and hallway of some of the shows played in this theater. Even though it is an old theater but they maintain very well. Very small & intimate theater. Every seat is a good seat. Very up close to the stage & fun to see all the performers right in front of us. Lobby area is quite spacious. Bench seating. There is no seat assigned so first come first served. They don't sell any food or drinks there. So no snacks before the show or during intermission. The Service: Staffs at the box office is helpful & efficient. Awesome little playhouse! We saw "The Double V", and it was relevant, interesting and has superb acting. ....We highly recommend this thoughtful, well written performance. The author, playwright Carole Eglash-Kosovo,pulled no punches in showing the sorry attitude of the people and the Leaders of the government from the top down in 1941, with the Negros getting screwed again, and not allowed to join the Army (etc.) and fight for our, and their country. A down to Earth YET high class Theater in our book, we hope you will try it out........ read more

"The Double V" is an absolutely amazing true story about our nation's first black civil rights movement! I was very moved by this production. Carole Eglash-Kosoff has written this production and an award is sure to follow. You must experience this and together we can overcome racism. read more

I had myself a little day at the theatre on Sunday and what better place to do that than the Matrix? This teeny, tiny little theater on Melrose is the perfect venue for an intimate matinee; it has that old playhouse smell and everyone has a great view of the stage since there are only 3 rows of orchestral-type seating. It was really nice to sit so close to the actors and be able to see the expressions on their faces, hear all the words... it's one of those little differences that I had hoped to find in LA, that I missed about NYC. If you're ever in the tony Melrose/Fairfax area, be sure to stop by and check out what's playing. read more

Run, do not stop....to buy tickets for Scraps at the MatrixTheatre. It is brilliant. Plus the theater is wonderful. This is a must see.

The Matrix is an EXTREMELY intimate theater. With only three rows of seats curved around the stage, you are right up in there no matter where you sit. Saw The Pied Pipers of the Lower East Side, which is an intense show, and the second row was plenty close. No complaints from me on the ticket costs. My friend got us comped tickets on Goldstar so all we paid was the convenience fee of $8 each. Seats were decently comfortable, snacks and drinks available in the lobby, pleasant staff, easy enough parking off of Melrose, given that it was early evening on a Sunday. If you have a chance to catch a play at the Matrix, you should absolutely go, if only for the experience of the space. read more

This theater deserves every bit of this 5 star rating. My wife and I saw Cages here recently. The theater itself is small and intimate. We arrived 10 minutes into the play, but the staff was very understanding and guided us into the play so no one was disturbed. Came here on a discount through goldstar.com but this place is on our radar now to see a play. read more

The Matrix Theatre has now been my home as an actor twice. It's a great place to work as an actor as has a long history of great performances from people who you probably would have recognized in the theater in the 80s. (as evidenced by all of the black and white photos from the 80s still hanging in the lobby). I remember seeing the west coast premiere of Urinetown here. The Matrix also recently hosted the amazing production "Farm Boy" as well. It's a small theatre with a great reputation where the audience feels like part of the show. Maybe that's more because the space is so small, some of the overhead lights spill into the first couple of rows, lighting the audience too! The space is so wide, it's almost "theatre in the round" as the actors have to play two different sides, unlike a traditional theater. The lobby is standard, but the bathrooms are small, so I would recommend using before the show starts, or you'll have to wait in a line at intermission. My only complaint, (and it's not the theater's fault), is that there's no great after show bar to walk to post show! Where are the actors supposed to hang out? Well, that and the occasional mouse spotting. But then, that's old Hollywood buildings for you. read more

My first visit to Matrix Theatre was on Jan. 14th to see Serrano. Wow! It was such a fun show...better than numerous big productions I saw last year at large well known venues in the Los Angeles area. Every seat has a great view. Serrano was a really funny show with talented actors. I saw a few of the actors in other shows. One talented actor played Brother in Ragtime a few months ago. I once saw the lead, who played Serrano, in Sleepless in Seattle at Pasadena Playhouse, but this was so much more enjoyable. Madeline Sunshine, the writer, was sitting in my row. I overheard a man speaking with her, so upon leaving, I asked if she was the writer and told her that she did a fabulous job. Joel Zwick, the director of My Big Fat Greek Wedding, directed this one. Apparently, he directed a lot of TV shows, like Full House and Family Matters. There are only 3 rows here, and he was sitting a row in back of us. My sister commended him after the show. This production of Serrano is two hours of truly wonderful entertainment. read more

I recently saw Serrano here and I loved the the theater space (and the show). The cliche holds true here - there is no such thing as a bad seat. The theater house neatly wraps around the stage allowing for great visibility. I was surprised the stage so easily accommodated an actual musical with a fairly large cast. The theater location is also excellent, on Melrose. read more

The Matrix does it again with an incredibly disturbing and profoundly directed production of All My Sons. The non-traditional casting doesn't distract at all but conversely adds an interesting dynamic to this 1950's play. I actually forgot after the first 5 minutes that it was cast non-traditionally. The actors were superb. From the leads to the supporting characters, everyone was important and had a full inner life. Notably, Alex Morris and Ann Gee Byrd were phenomenal. The direction by Cameron Watson was wonderful along with the simple but amazing set (one of the things The Matrix is known for - spinning that small black box into an all-encompassing world). I also saw Stick Fly here which was also incredible. Joe Stern has found a way to bring real magic to the stage with all his productions. Go, go, go to this theatre! No matter what's playing here, you're sure to be delighted and inspired. read more

This is a small and very intimate theater. You are so close to the stage, it feels criminal to be in the actor's space.. and yet - I loved every second of it. I'm ashamed I hadn't found The Matrix earlier. I'm all for the venues that are showcasing the show, and not the scenery. read more

I recently went to this theater to see a new production. I new the group performing, but had never been to the theater before. It didn't look like much from the outside, it actually didn't look like a theater at all. When I went inside it also was not very impressive. The theater itself however, was very nice, It was very small an intimate with only three rows of seats. But it made for a very powerful experience. Being so close to the stage and actors made it very engaging and no seat was bad. There is no need for microphones are flashy lights. It really allows the actors abilities to come out. Any drama company looking for a great place to perform this is a great place to look into. And if you like to see interesting and unique space to see new theater check this place out. read more
