The Improv gets great comics. I've been here for all types of shows: multiple high-profile comedians doing 10 minutes each, well known touring acts, and even charity events. I also love the alternative programming in their Lab space. This is a great spot to catch up-and-coming talent taking chances and making cutting edge moves. It's an expensive night out, no doubt about that. And parking is a nightmare due to its location. But I've never had a bad time at the Improv. And I still think back fondly on all the shows I've seen here. read more

I recently checked out a comedy show at the North Hollywood Improv, and overall it was a pretty mixed experience. First off, a heads-up: make sure you buy your tickets directly through their official site--not a third-party seller. It'll save you potential headaches at the door. Also, be prepared for their two-item minimum once you're inside (food or drinks), which definitely adds to the overall cost of the night. The downside is there's no tables for those seated in GA so the food and drinks on your lap or floor. The venue itself is fairly small, seating around 200 people, which can be nice for an intimate comedy setting. That said, the space felt a bit cramped and had a noticeable sticky floor and musty smell, which took away from the comfort a bit. Don't we all need a good laugh every once in a while? In my case I need a good laugh every day. A friend of mine had 2 tickets that she purchased online and asked me to join her. We went to see different comedians last night and were very satisfied with the service and the ambiance. It is fairly a small venue with good vibes, good times, good energy, great comedians, and last but not least, great hosts. I believe there were 5 to 6 comedians for last night's show that started exactly on time. We weren't that hungry, but since the 2 item is required we got couple of drinks, Chicken Street Tacos, a burger & Garlic Fries. Obviously we shared them all. The Garlic Fries stole the show for both of us. I have been to this lovely comedy club in the past and saw some of my favorite comedians: Arsenio Hall, Dave Chappelle, Daniel Tosh, Margaret Cho, Sebastian Maniscal's and Craig Robinson. Once you enter the venue, they take away your phones, lock them up and after the show, you will get them back. Excellent comedians, we had a good laugh, place was very clean and so were both bathrooms, full bar. They charge $18 for valet, but we parked on the street. It was my first time here and it was very fun. They get you in and out at the check-in stand and always make sure you have your ID. The bathrooms are actually pretty clean and the place is definitely packed, but I still felt comfortable. They have waiters and waitresses that get out the food very fast and bring out the drinks very fast. It's kinda like a dine in movie theater. I got the chicken street tacos. It was not too bad. Could use maybe a tad bit more flavor, but it's still overall decent. The prices are pretty much like a restaurant. Minimum $15 per meal on average. And then we got the garlic fries as well. They were so good. A little bigger than I like my normal fries but not bad and cooked well. I spent about $36. Comics come out and do 15 minute sets and it was a good mix of people. I have been here dozens of times I've seen some of the most amazing comedians, such as Arsenio Hall, Sarah Silverman, David Spade, Dane Cook, Dave Chappelle, Lewis Black, Joe List, Amy Wong, Margaret Cho, the late Brian Moreno, Daniel Tosh and last night superstar event with Elisa Schlessinger, Sebastian Maniscalco, Craig, Robinson,, and BRIAN Monarch was simply nonstop. One of our go to spots for a comedy show! Great for a date night or to go with friends. We got tickets ahead of time online. We showed up about 30 mins early to get a good spot. There's a two item minimum per person which works for any food or drink purchase when you're inside the room. They have a decent amount of beers, cocktails and wines. If I could give a one star review I would. My experience at the Improv was disappointing because of the employee working the front door, Rocky. From the moment I arrived, he came across as unwelcoming and seemed to have a consistently rude attitude. Instead of making guests feel excited to be there, the interaction felt cold and dismissive. Customer service is the first impression people have of a venue, and unfortunately this experience started the night off on the wrong foot. I hope management addresses this, because a friendlier, more professional approach would make a big difference. read more

Visited Hollywood Improv for the first time for a 7:30pm show. Ticketing processes were super easy, and staff was fantastic from start to finish. The show itself was stellar! We saw Ashley Gavin and Irene Tu and had some much-needed laughs. Food was...okay. Something along the lines of Applebee's quality and pricing. I had the fried chicken sandwich with fries, and it was not a highlight of my evening. The spinach and artichoke dip was delicious. Structurally, there were some issues: while I understand the phone policy in protection of the artists, this process took a really long time and caused many of us to be crammed in a tight hallway. Overall, it took around ten minutes to exit the small venue. Given the building's shape, I gather that this would be tricky to fix, but it was enough to run the excellent vibe from the show and comedians themselves. read more

Here in LA you have a choice of some great comedy venues. And most comics will cycle through them all. However, it's the Improv/Levity Live clubs that stand out. The Hollywood Improv has an excellent location on Melrose, "some" street parking, or $18 valet. What really sets them apart is the staff, and the food!! I'm here frequently. Jimmy or Reggie are at the door, Jenny, Carlos, (or another lady) are behind the front bar - great spot to chill while waiting for the line to form to get into the main room, and Yennifer is one of the rock stars who often helps me once I'm seated there. Comfortable seating with tables large enough for food and drink, intimate Main Room, but also a cool, smaller space called The Lab, where alternative or experimental shows will take place. A favorite show type of mine at The Lab is Surrounded, where the comic is in the center of the room, surrounded by chairs (think theatre in the round), and there's mostly crowd work. Or whatever. Loved that. Up close and personal. The menu is basically the same for all Improv and Levity Live venues. The food is excellent!!! I do not have dinner prior to a show. I'll do an appetizer and entree there. And it's large selection! I especially like the Crispy Shrimp Tempura, and I'll get the Chicken Quesadilla, but swap out Blackened Shrimp for the Chicken. I have yet to find anything on the menu I don't like. But back to the people. Ricardo is (currently) the manager. Brenton has also been an amazing help. I just feel like I'm among family and friends when I'm here. Friendly and familiar. And I can always snag a spot front and center, even when by myself. No requirement to have 2-4 people to do so. The lab is an intimate club with 30-40 person occupancy. It seemed like the audience was sectioned by race (which if true, was very smart). The comedians commented that they couldn't see the audience from the stage, yet they knew exactly where to direct each "race joke". When addressing "the black people" they always pointed to the center. Whites on the right and Latinos on the left. It worked. Deon Cole and Ocean were funny. It was fun being in a room so small that they could hear everything you said, but a little embarrassing too. I swear we weren't heckling! They literally asked us a question! LOL! The drinks were good. I wasn't thrilled with the food. I would definitely eat before attending next time. After, we went to Bossa Nova. Overall, I would definitely return to the lab. Great place! We were looking for a fun place and stumbled upon this improv comedy club and had a blast!

Love the Improv. Although this is not my go to location due to the traffic this location does seem to have the best acts. When you check in, they check your ID at the door. Once you are in and if you are early, you can get a few drinks at the bar. Be aware that there is a 2-item minimum once you are in the showroom and items you purchase at the bar do not count towards that minimum. Once they start letting people in it is first come first serve for seating and depending on the size of your party you may get a closer or further back seat. Its usually just me and my wife so we generally get a good seat. This venue is small so even if you are in the back, you will generally have a good view. As far as drink prices they are typical for any comedy club or venue in the Los Angeles area. They also serve food. We have not tried any of the food besides the deserts, but they are good. Shows do typically sell out here so if there is a line up you want to see make sure to buy tickets early and have a great night of laughter. read more

The legendary Hollywood Improv. I've lived in LA for two decades and this is my first time coming here I think. It's crazy to think about, especially since I love stand-up comedy so much. Walking through the door, getting to the main room seeing all the pictures of the comedy legends that performed here gave me chills. In that respect, the vibe here is electric. I didn't order any food here, so I can't speak to that, but I did order two beers while watching the show. The wait person was super fast and friendly. And they were even really great when we tried to close out. I came here during the week when there was a special on the tickets. The lineup was actually really good. No huge names, but some people that you would probably recognize and I thought the show and line-up overall was funny and great. If you are a fan of stand-up comedy, don't be like me and wait so long to get here. This is a must experience for any stand-up comedy fan and who knows... you might be watching the next comedian legend in the making. Parking in the area is always pretty tough but in the middle of the week you might be OK. I saw some open spots in the area right before the show started. read more

This is one of my favorite Improv locations. The staff is super nice, well organized, and I always have a good time. The last time I came here was on a Friday night to see Jimmy Yang (from Crazy Rich Asians). Checking in was super easy and quick. We were a group of 4 and getting a table was easy. They have their two item minimum which they were kinda strict about. I just ended up getting two wines. Their food is pretty affordable but their drink cocktails are priced higher. The venue is pretty small but I like it. All the seats are pretty good and easy to see the stage. The waitress was good about checking on us. Drinks kinda take awhile to come out. Needed a laugh for the night so I came here. We preordered the tickets online and I got to admit I was a little annoyed at the fact that they charge you the service fee of $8.68 (not sure if the amount is different depending on how many tickets you purchase). We parked on the street and it's metered parking. They do have valet parking if you don't have the patience to look for a parking space. Since we preordered our tickets, we got in line to get in and all you need is to show the security your ID and tell him your first and last name. Once we got inside, we told the person that the have a party of 7 and we felt like sardines sitting at the table. It was a tight squeeze. To top it off they have a two item minimum policy. Everything on the menu is over priced. Some of the line up were funny but not all, then again it's not for everyone right. Another thing I thought it was rude was when one of the staff, not sure if he was management or what, told me to put the phone away or step outside as I was taking a photo of the food. This place is always on my radar when I visit LA! We frequently are able to see some huge names for only about $30-$40 which is awesome. Generally I look about 3-4 days out and am able to get tickets even to the bigger names. They have a pretty efficient line system and there's a decent view from any of the seats. Not like some comedy clubs where you have to throw out your neck to see the stage. The organization and flow of the events is great and I always feel like I'm getting an authentic comedy experience. The service has mastered quiet, dark, discreet order taking. I felt like I was able to gesture to the waitress when she came over and she knew that I wanted more Pinot noir. The two item minimum isn't bad either- I usually get sparkling water and a glass of wine. People next to me had nachos and they looked fabulous. The bathrooms are a little rough, but I think that is more a reflection of some of the customers than the place it self. I will keep going back and telling people to come here! read more

Nick Swardson Pauly Shore - gracing the Hollywood Improv stage for the first time EVER... Donnelle Rawlings And many more talented comedians... Bobby Lee was funny and had me rolling as usual...his goofy voices and asian caricatures and overall hilarious swagger has him embodying the ridiculous... he even threatened to pull his ESTRANGE out of... we got a view of his pubes... almost!!! Nick Swardson brought his usual scat fare; and tried out some new jokes; his Jason Statham BEEKEEPER impression had me rolling; then he brought Mathew McCaunaghey's southern ethereal swagger on ; also hilarious; some more jokes and then introduced Pauly... Pauly was nothing short of a miracle tonight...I did mention it was a historic night... never having graced the stages of THE HOLLYWOOD IMPROV out of a promise to his mother; may she rest in peace ... and the former owner of THE COMEDY STORE ; Pauly still had to represent by his mates this Juneteenth and that he DID... THANK GOD for THAT!!! ..." I don't understand why Russel Simmons doesn't want me to play him" ... "I look like him!" ... he then goes on to parody some of his exercise routines..."what's it take to get a fucking gig in this town!?"... I had tears rolling down my face... dude is a Stand Up Maestro... Donnell Rawlings from THE CHAPPELLE SHOW; SOUL graced the stage... and went right into it..."what the fuck is Juneteenth!?" "We just had Martin Luther King Holiday!?" ...then went into "I need to make an app where my girlfriend goes into my phone so it blows up in her face"...Rawlings ended the set and the mic was left smoking.... This club is rather big with a huge bar. The lineup was fun the night we went. They didn't have assigned seats but the seating they gave us was pretty good. We had a bottle of Veuve yellow label for the night. The show ran about 2 hours and it was good experience. But I don't think I will ever come to this improv again cause it's just too far. This was my first visit to Deon Cole's spot, and I had an amazing time. The drinks weren't premium cocktails, but they were tasty. Same goes for the food and dessert--solid, more in line with a dive bar than fine dining. But let's be real, you're not going there for the menu. The space is intimate and cozy, which I actually prefer (looked like max occupancy was around 40 people). They also lock your phones in Yondr, which keeps everyone present in the moment. I went here a long time ago when I first lived here. You have to. It's an LA comedy staple. Always wanted to try out the open mic so that's what I did tonight. It's the same menu as the Lab which I visited a while back, and I think I got buffalo cauliflower which was good anecdotally, but thankfully they don't enforce that for open mic since it's just new/test comedy. They don't even check if you have a ticket for open mic to be honest. Honestly it was a lot better than I expected. Great hostess so good vibes even for the people who were not funny. Most of the people who got no laughs were overly raunchy or OTT in my opinion. Just be normal and prepared and you'll do fine. They bring like four people from the list back the next night to showcase guaranteed so that's a nice incentive as well. It's a name-draw as to who goes up and when so not everyone gets called. They have a hard 3-minute rule though which is nice mostly when someone is obviously bombing and we feel bad. The venue is same as always, dark but plenty of seating, and not so crowded as the Lab next door. They have a piano setup too if you wanna use that, that isn't everywhere. Parking wise, I have a parking pass because I technically live in WeHo. Sorry y'all. I know neighborhood parking is off-limits otherwise but people chance it anyway it seems. They do offer valet but no one working as a comic for free is pulling in $18 valet money. read more

Wednesday nite line up was awesome: David Spade, Whitney Cummings, Leslie Liao, Jay Washington, Craig Robinson and Brad Upton. Have seen Leslie in Long Beach (thanks for coming all the way down) and first time up with Brad Upton who was seriously funny with jokes about old age! The Oy hers, of course, awesome either way Whitney being a new mom and David Spade giving bee avoidance lessons! This place is not huge so almost all seats good. Quick efficient staff from getting in to getting seated to getting food. Food is eh but reasonably priced night out overall. read more

Such a fun place to go to. I loved that there were multiple comedians for an affordable price. Come hungry (or thirsty) and you won't be disappointed! There is a 2 item minimum but it's easy to meet. You can buy appetizers (pretzels looked amazing but were just okay, pickle chips were delicious, beef nachos were good), an entrée (slider with garlic fries) damn those fries were bomb, desserts, or drinks such as sodas to sangria.
