I recently checked out a comedy show at the North Hollywood Improv, and overall it was a pretty mixed experience. First off, a heads-up: make sure you buy your tickets directly through their official site--not a third-party seller. It'll save you potential headaches at the door. Also, be prepared for their two-item minimum once you're inside (food or drinks), which definitely adds to the overall cost of the night. The downside is there's no tables for those seated in GA so the food and drinks on your lap or floor. The venue itself is fairly small, seating around 200 people, which can be nice for an intimate comedy setting. That said, the space felt a bit cramped and had a noticeable sticky floor and musty smell, which took away from the comfort a bit. Another thing to know: they require all phones to be locked in pouches during the show. But, the staff are overall very nice and cool.

It was my first time here and it was very fun. They get you in and out at the check-in stand and always make sure you have your ID. The bathrooms are actually pretty clean and the place is definitely packed, but I still felt comfortable. They have waiters and waitresses that get out the food very fast and bring out the drinks very fast. It's kinda like a dine in movie theater. I got the chicken street tacos. It was not too bad. Could use maybe a tad bit more flavor, but it's still overall decent. The prices are pretty much like a restaurant. Minimum $15 per meal on average. And then we got the garlic fries as well. They were so good. A little bigger than I like my normal fries but not bad and cooked well. I spent about $36. Comics come out and do 15 minute sets and it was a good mix of people. I enjoyed it overall

The MainStage at the Hollywood Improv runs like clockwork. While street parking in the area is limited, they do offer $18 valet right in front of the venue. The staff is friendly and efficient with enforcing the no cellphone policy of the comedy shows. The room itself is relatively small but allows for an intimate show. The food while solid is a tad pricy as the tickets require a two item minimum per person.

Well it happened again ! Purchased tickets to see #Anthony Jeselnik for March 10th show and I get an email saying that he cancel again. He's the number one reason for me to purchase tickets, it's almost an hour drive and again we get let down. They don't allow refunds . This is the last time, I'm done. If anyone else experience this put it in the comments so others can see .

Such a great time! The atmosphere is so lively and fun and it's been my favorite comedy club so far! Love the loud music between each comedian's turn and the comedians were animated and talented! Recommend this spot to have a great time with friends or your partner! Can't go wrong with the fries and mango carts. Staff was friendly and attentive also!

Tonight was a special line up. We got 2 of the best in the business: Arsenio Hall and Jay Leno. Great food and venue. 2 item minimum. Great selection of food. Of course due to high profile celebrities, our phones were locked up during the show. We got lucky to meet Jay after and got a picture with him. We also got a pic with Deon Cole. We had a blast.

Here in LA you have a choice of some great comedy venues. And most comics will cycle through them all. However, it's the Improv/Levity Live clubs that stand out. The Hollywood Improv has an excellent location on Melrose, "some" street parking, or $18 valet. What really sets them apart is the staff, and the food!! I'm here frequently. Jimmy or Reggie are at the door, Jenny, Carlos, (or another lady) are behind the front bar - great spot to chill while waiting for the line to form to get into the main room, and Yennifer is one of the rock stars who often helps me once I'm seated there. Comfortable seating with tables large enough for food and drink, intimate Main Room, but also a cool, smaller space called The Lab, where alternative or experimental shows will take place. A favorite show type of mine at The Lab is Surrounded, where the comic is in the center of the room, surrounded by chairs (think theatre in the round), and there's mostly crowd work. Or whatever. Loved that. Up close and personal. The menu is basically the same for all Improv and Levity Live venues. The food is excellent!!! I do not have dinner prior to a show. I'll do an appetizer and entree there. And it's large selection! I especially like the Crispy Shrimp Tempura, and I'll get the Chicken Quesadilla, but swap out Blackened Shrimp for the Chicken. I have yet to find anything on the menu I don't like. But back to the people. Ricardo is (currently) the manager. Brenton has also been an amazing help. I just feel like I'm among family and friends when I'm here. Friendly and familiar. And I can always snag a spot front and center, even when by myself. No requirement to have 2-4 people to do so. LOVE this place!!! And if you have the good fortune of having a shorter, older gentleman deliver your food, that's Antonio. Nicest guy. Tell him hi!

Love the Improv. Although this is not my go to location due to the traffic this location does seem to have the best acts. When you check in, they check your ID at the door. Once you are in and if you are early, you can get a few drinks at the bar. Be aware that there is a 2-item minimum once you are in the showroom and items you purchase at the bar do not count towards that minimum. Once they start letting people in it is first come first serve for seating and depending on the size of your party you may get a closer or further back seat. Its usually just me and my wife so we generally get a good seat. This venue is small so even if you are in the back, you will generally have a good view. As far as drink prices they are typical for any comedy club or venue in the Los Angeles area. They also serve food. We have not tried any of the food besides the deserts, but they are good. Shows do typically sell out here so if there is a line up you want to see make sure to buy tickets early and have a great night of laughter.

Can an 18 year old attend a show?

Anyone have their email? I left my black bag there last night, and no one is picking up the phones. Been trying all night. Can't seem to find an email on their site or via yelp either... any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Do we need to buy tickets ahead of time or do we just walk in?

If it's a very popular headliner, I'd buy the tickets ahead of time. Otherwise, you'll probably be fine just showing up 30 minutes beforehand and buying tickets at the box office.

    Is this 18 and under?

No, the minimum age limit for entry is 18 and over. The minimum age requirement for purchase and consumption of alcohol/alcoholic beverages is 21 and over.

How's the Mac n cheese, any photo?

Delicious! Comes in a cast iron skillet.

Everyone working at the venue was pleasant. The theatre itself was intimate in size. It was simple yet classic. They gave plenty of verbal countdowns to showtime. They have a strict no photos, videos, electronics use policy in the theatre during the show which was fine by me. I did drive up from San Diego solo to see Rory Scovel. He put on a great set! The first time I saw Judd Apatow and David Spade and friends - although I love them, Judd was going for a very laid back approach reading off of his iPad lol. Today I saw Vanessa Bayer, Kyle Mooney, and Jenny Lewis was her surprise guest! The show was so funny and Jenny's guitar playing and singing were angelic. The best part…read morewas the musical improvisations--the cast is very talented at making songs up on the spot. However, there is one major issue--they chose to do a movie (based on audience suggestions) that I knew absolutely nothing about. (I'd say I'm fairly average in my knowledge of movies.) I could totally not appreciate the differences between the actual movie and the black version, which is the main attraction of the show. Since they only do one movie per show, I felt a bit left in the dark for the whole show... maybe it's a good show for people who know a lot about movies. There was a moment or two when I thought some of the actors were a little mean to the other actors during their improv routine. Also, I thought there were some loud insensitive people in the (mostly non-black) audience that felt like they had a free license to throw out borderline inappropriate / racist suggestions for the improv, even though they probably thought that it was OK given what the show was about. Definitely a little awkwardness at moments. Good idea for a show, but I think it needs a little work on the format and, I don't know how long this show has been running, but maybe a little time for it to gel together. I'd come watch it again (if it's still running) in maybe 6 months, but I'd give it only one more chance.
