I've been going to this restaurant for YEARS. While the food was great in the past, it was subpar this time. It didn't seem hot enough. The server was perfect, no complaints. The CLEANLINESS is the biggest issue. You can always tell how a restaurant is run in the back by the cleanliness of the bathroom. The bathrooms are DISGUSTING. The light switches are BLACK with years of I don't want to know what, and these are the bathrooms that the employees use! The floors are so sticky, I had to wash my shoes when I got home. Someone gave up on this place. When you just sit there in your booth and ignore the cleanliness of your establishment, you've given up. We were road-tripping from Michigan and decided to stop here for lunch, and boy, was it a good choice. Honestly, you can tell it's going to be a fantastic meal just by looking at the menu! What a pleasant surprise Tao Chen's was. I had just finished an entire day exploring around Indiana Dunes National Park and was craving some comfort Chinese food. Did Tao Chen's ever hit the spot! It was exactly what I was looking for! They absolutely delivered and so happy I discovered this place on a whim. From Indiana Dunes NP, Tao Chen's is only an 8 mile drive away. I found Tao Chen's through Google Maps fortunately. Although this review is from last summer when I visited...I was really interested in finding a restaurant that was open for dine-in during the pandemic. And yes, Tao Chen's was. They sat people at every other table to spread everyone out. Tao Chen's is simply located in your typical shopping plaza. When I came here on a Friday evening during dinner hours, they were relatively quiet. But you have to take into account that a lot of people were hesitant about eating out during this crazy time in history. I can only imagine now that there's a cure for this virus...I figure their business has picked up for sure...especially because the food was delicious! Looking over the menu...wow...they had almost every Chinese/Asian Cuisine item/recipe you could think of. And they just attached a number to each entre listed. Nice and simple when it came time to order. Looking over this gigantic menu of all sorts of Chinese dishes to pick from...the numbers went from 1 - 170!!! Can you believe that? 170 entre dishes to choose out of! How can you not find something you like, lol?! Since I was dining alone...I had one choice to pick from. That's it. And thankfully I made it a successful one. I selected #66 - Mongolian Chicken - "slices of chicken stir-fried with scallions in oyster sauce and bedded on crispy white noodles" for $10.15. And yes...surprisingly, almost all the items on the menu were extremely CHEAP! Inexpensive! Prices for everything ranged from $9 - $12. What a great deal for all your favorite Chinese food entrees. And of course, this Mongolian Chicken dish was huge! The serving size was gigantic. And for me having worked up an appetite by hiking and exploring all around Indiana Dunes, I was pretty hungry...yet still needed a to-go container because of how giant the portion size was. Tao Chen's did not hold back. Where can you ever find outstanding Chinese food with massive portions at value prices?! Very few of them exist and Tao Chen's is a shining example. Finally, this Mongolian Chicken was TERRIFIC! What I liked best was the oyster sauce. It was a thick, rich, savory dark brown sauce that highlighted the entire dish. The oyster sauce was so flavorful! Combined with chicken, onions and green peppers over crispy white noodles...for me, the dish was so satisfying...especially for a random place like this where I came in with zero expectations yet left quite fulfilled. Funny...I had never been to Chesterton, let alone even heard of Chesterton, Indiana so what were the chances that I would ever find a wonderful restaurant like this to dine at? All credit goes to Google Maps, lol. One other thing, Tao Chen's was very spacious overall, I liked the entire setting and ambiance. It was quiet and pleasant...good for a relaxing evening dinner. What else can I say about Tao Chen's? It was sort of like my favorite highlight along my venture out to Indiana Dunes. Yeah Indiana Dunes was a fun day excursion, but coming here afterwards was very memorable for me, lol. I highly recommend eating at Tao Chen's. 5 Stars. read more

What a gem of a find out of all places in Chesterton, Indiana. My best friend took me here while we were in town visiting nearby Valparaiso. She said this is one of the best Chinese restaurants in the area. And she was right. The owner of Tao Chen used to work for Joy Yee's in Chicago's very own Chinatown. I found that out after I told the lady cashier that the menu resembled the menu at Joy Yee. Anyway the food and the service was fantastic. Definitely make sure to order salt & pepper shrimp. That was so good. We also loved the egg rolls and the sweet and sour sauce that comes with the egg rolls is made in house. It reminded me of the sauce I would get from a suburban Chicago Chinese restaurant called China Chef. Service was great too. Overall the food was delicious and I would definitely go back and try other dishes on the menu. read more

Tonight was an off night for speed, as the wait between ordering and serving was about 35 minutes. Tao Chen's came highly recommended to me. I was told they were famous for their egg rolls! It was not a disappointment. We tried chicken Lo mein and Mongolian Chicken. There was a lot of flavor in the food and it tasted "clean" not oily like other Chinese places can seem. I went during a busy hour and still only waited about 25min for our food. I bright my friend for Chinese food. he's dying from cancer and Chinese food was on his bucket list. The owner refused to give us a larger table for his wheelchair because "She might get a rush of people". The restaurant was empty aside from us and employees, and no other customers came in while we were there. Then, after eating, he needed to go to the bathroom so we went to see if we could manage with his wheelchair. A male employee came and stood by us, not to help, but to prevent damage. We are adults and Determined that he could not use their bathroom, but thanks for making an already obviously challenging situation even more so. On top of that, their food is always just mediocre...The only thing they make well is egg rolls. I will never pay money to these rude people again. read more

Now that Joy Wok has closed, Tao Chen's has the best Chinese takeout in Chesterton. They have the large triangular crab Rangoon my wife and I love. The dinner special is a good deal if you'd like a chicken wing, egg roll, and soup; whichever entree you choose, you will likely have leftovers you can have for lunch the next day. Not a quality establishment. Placed a to go order and the chef used the wrong meat. The receipt was correct but the contents of the bag didn't match. Called to let Tao Chen's know. The cashier did offer to have the dish redone if I brought it back. After I explained I couldn't bring it back because I was at work she talked to the chef. The chef, who is also the owner, insisted that he cooked beef. The meat I had infront of me was white, had the texture of chicken and taste like chicken. I paid for beef and got what I now hope was chicken. Tao Chen's flavors were simply okay. The meal didn't even come with a fortune cookie. I tolerated the prices only because it was on my way to work. I won't make the mistake of going back. read more

In the Chesterton area I would say that this is Chinese at its best, not to say it is the best Chinese I have ever had but locally this is as good as it gets. Everything on the menu is pretty good and reasonably priced. They also have some Korean and Thai dishes. I really love the Kimchi! I have had the other Chinese venues in Chesterton and when they started up they outshined Tao Chen's but then they lowered quality. Tao Chen's is delicious and consistent! read more
