Combination Appetizers (for 2)

The food was cooked to perfection, and the staff? Just the sweetest and kindest folks you'll meet! We were road-tripping from Michigan and decided to stop here for lunch, and boy, was it a good choice. Honestly, you can tell it's going to be a fantastic meal just by looking at the menu! Make sure you try the hot tea--it's a must. And the stone bowl rice? It arrives sizzling hot, with crispy rice at the bottom that's pure magic. Just a heads up: there's a LOT of rice, so bring your appetite!

What a gem of a find out of all places in Chesterton, Indiana. My best friend took me here while we were in town visiting nearby Valparaiso. She said this is one of the best Chinese restaurants in the area. And she was right. The owner of Tao Chen used to work for Joy Yee's in Chicago's very own Chinatown. I found that out after I told the lady cashier that the menu resembled the menu at Joy Yee. Anyway the food and the service was fantastic. Definitely make sure to order salt & pepper shrimp. That was so good. We also loved the egg rolls and the sweet and sour sauce that comes with the egg rolls is made in house. It reminded me of the sauce I would get from a suburban Chicago Chinese restaurant called China Chef. Service was great too. Overall the food was delicious and I would definitely go back and try other dishes on the menu.

I make a special trip to eat at the place when I'm in the area. Cantonese comfort food that's a cut above the usual takeout places. They have a nice, clean, modern dining room, too. Eaten here three times and it's always been tasty and skillfully, carefully prepared.

Fantastic traditional Chinese food. Very courteous staff and quick service. The meals are reasonably priced and came out steaming hot. Best appetizers I've had at a Chinese restaurant.

Cashier needs to work on giving courteous service. When taking orders over the phone, provide total price of purchase!

Happy Wok showed up on my Yelp at four stars, and I was excited going in. I ordered the Hunan Chicken and my son went with the Mongolian Beef. Both were from the lunch menu and both were labeled as spicy. I took one bite of mine and I immediately knew that there was zero spice. Additionally, there was zero flavor. I'm saying tasteless. To add insult to injury, the chicken was rubbery and the vegetables were undercooked and stiff. Very difficult to eat. So, I figured I had ordered the wrong meal for the day. Surely my son's meal of Mongolian Beef was better. Wrong. No spice. No flavor. Beef was rubbery. Hard vegetables. Those poor vegetables didn't even have enough cook time to soak in that lack of flavor. Luckily we had a side of rice and an egg roll to salvage at least something from this meal, right? Nope. They equaled the main meal with their total lack of flavor. It was a sad walk back to the Best Western from Happy Wok. I really wish it was good. The service was excellent. The owners seem super nice. I'm giving two stars just because of them. But this one is an avoid in my book.
