My deep dish exposure is pretty limited, so I am by no means a pizza snob. This style is especially hard to come by in Syracuse. I called up and placed my order by phone on a weeknight, around maybe 4:30 PM. Staff was very friendly. When I ordered the spinach pie, the woman on the phone exclaimed "that's my favorite too!" which made me even more excited to try it. My order was ready on time, and the checkout process was painless. The inside was small, but not claustrophobic. There are a few tables, though dine-in wasn't an option during COVID. The pizza was delicious. The spinach pie includes garlic, basil, onions, mushrooms and tomatoes, and mixed cheese. It was white pie style, but deep dish. Upon seeing a post from @eastwood_syracuse on Instagram sharing the Washington Post's pick for "Best Chicago Style Pizza in NYS," we knew we had to try it. We took a peek at the menu and quickly saw there Deals and Coupons section then selected the 10" Deep Dish 3 topping pizza, 10 wings, & 2 liter. On the deep dish, we ordered extra cheese, sausage, broccoli. The team even gave us a call when having to make a substitute for broccoli, but no worries, we switched to mushrooms. The man on the phone was very nice. About 15-20 minutes later I headed over to Burnet Ave. parked in the lot right along side of the building, and walked in. As I entered I was greeted by a cool spray painted tomato on the wall, as well as the kind smiling staff. The woman at the counter handed me the pizza and wings and I reached into the cooler to grab an orange soda. When I got home, we opened the pizza, gave it a quick cut, and dug in. The pizza dough was excellent. Very soft, the right chew and texture, the cheese was gooey and hot, perfect for that cheese pull and the sauce was sweet and tangy. Definitely an excellent deep dish, the best we've had so far in Syracuse. I would go back for the wings alone though! The perfect fry and crunch. While in Syracuse, NY style pizza reigns supreme, a new pizzeria on Burnet Ave is aiming to bring a little taste of Chicago to CNY. Tangy Tomato opened in November of 2020. The owners, Melanie Austin and Meaghan Corning, worked together for eight years at Gianni's, the pizzeria that formerly occupied the spot. While Tangy Tomato serves both New York- and Chicago-style pies, the deep dish has been the bigger seller by a long-shot, Austin said. They sold hundreds of deeps in the first few days alone. Austin and Corning traveled to Chicago to seek tips and knowledge about that city's famed pies, visiting several deep dish legends for inspiration. The wife and I were in the mood for pizza tonight, and Tangy Tomato has been getting rave reviews in several food groups we follow, so we decided to give them a try. I ordered 2 hours early, as some reviews said early ordering was the way to go, as the place has been getting a little backed up with all the attention they've been getting. I showed up at 5:15, exactly when I asked for it to be ready. If it weren't for the very large sign on the building, you may not see it from the street - its a tiny spot on the side of the back of a building that has a large smoke shop at street level. Plenty of parking on the street as well as a couple parking lot spots. Very small place - no seats, 100% take out. But its a nice little place, wood floors and clean and bright inside. My wife and I ordered a large Meat Lovers deep dish with 10 hot wings. Gotta try wings any and everywhere they're served. It was ready when I got there. Ladies behind the counter were very nice and I was in and out in 5 minutes. I got home and we opened everything up. Its good to note that I live a half hour away and when we opened everything, it was still hot, the wings were even still steaming, which is awesome for us cause sometimes take out doesn't keep well for the long drive. The pizza was sliced into 4 large slices. I'm a NY pizza lover, but I gotta say...we both thought it was delicious. Plenty of toppings, the crust was cooked completely and tasted great (and I'm not crust guy), and the tomato sauce was just what they say it is - nice and tangy. Wings were good as well. I personally coulda taken a bit more heat for them being "hot", but they still had a good kick and were flavorful and cooked well. It cost $35 for a large deep dish and 10 wings, which is pretty standard in most places around here, so it's definitely comparable to other pizza places. We'd definitely go again and would recommend everyone give it a try. read more

Our first time picking up a pie from this new pizza joint right across the street from Shifty's. I ordered online, opting for the custom 10" deep dish with meatballs, black olives and green peppers. The order was ready when I arrived, greeted by a friendly server, and by the time I got home, it was just perfect and ready to enjoy. We poured some red wine, and each took a 1/4 slice. Slice isn't really the word. Wedge is more appropriate. Fill with deliciousness, this was by and far the best deep dish we've had outside of Chicago. We will be back! read more

It is very cheesy for sure. But the crust is delicious and strong and keeps the pizza form, even the slices. The pizza does not turn into a messy blob. That allows me to eat this like a pizza. Tangy Tomato is new in town, but I'm happy to see they're doing well despite almost no web presence. At the time I'm writing this, their website is still just a banner displaying their November 2020 opening date. They don't have online ordering - it was a mild inconvenience clicking around to get an idea of what they offered. Thankfully, their staff is notoriously friendly both over the phone and in person. I'm not even kidding, you'll walk out of there feeling like you should add them to your Christmas Card list. We typically pay a little more than we would at other pizza places, but only because it's a massive upgrade in quality. The taste, style, and quality of ingredients are a lot better than most other pizzerias around here. We've only tried the deep dish, and have gotten the Buffalo Chicken and the Meat Lovers. For both, we were specifically happy with the quality of the meat and the overall taste. Even the larger pizzas are cut into fours, but I had no problem two-handing it. The crust is pretty thick and chewy. Their philly steak sub used standard philly meat as far as we could tell, but comes together well with "the works", and the bread they use. The bread is hearty and had an egg wash feel to it. The Thai Chili wings were great. Good size, cooked well, the sauce is a good blend of sweet and pleasantly spicy. We got legs for all ten; I'm not sure if that's how they always are. We're glad we read the reviews first and knew to order in advance. Our orders have taken about 45 minutes. Glad to have this place on my pizza line up. There are hundreds of valid places you can get pizza in Syracuse, but so few of them do deep dish. Disclaimer: I've never been to Chicago, and my only prior experience with deep dish is Uno's (the one at the mall). I had a great take out experience from Tangy Tomato Pizzeria! I phoned in an order and was quoted a pick up time of 40-45 min. I arrived around 45 min after and my pizza was ready and still hot! The ladies at the counter were all really nice and helped me out so efficiently. The cheese was hot and stringy with every slice you pull from the pie. I love the taste of the crust as well! Has heard about a new place serving Authentic deep dish Chicago style pizza. Deep dish is my husbands favorite so tried it out this past weekend. It was good deep dish but not as thick as what you would get in Chicago. The toppings were good but wish the tomato sauce on the top was spread all over and a little more generous. I'm a couple of months away from posting this, but it needs said. First place I found Chicago style deep dish pizza here in Syracuse. Ordered a simple pepperoni and mushroom deep dish and a NY style chicken bacon ranch pizza. Both were very tasty and had plenty of toppings. The restaurant was clean and staff friendly and polite. Steps onto the restaurant were tricky and looked to need some work, but I'm sure that's been handled by now. I don't live close enough for delivery, but if I did, this place would be on my rotation of local pizza shops to order from. read more

Following services one frigid weekday evening in East Syracuse I headed back home and found myself in need of a quick bite. I was a huge fan of Gianni's (former tenant) and was curious if the Tangy Tomato was comparable so I decided to give it a try. I noticed right away how clean, bright and cheery the interior was from the former days and the lay out appears more open. There were limited slice choices so I grabbed one slice of cheese and Vitamin water to go. The warmed up slice was near perfect, sauce flavorful, cheesy without the heavy grease and crust was crispy and chewy where it needed to be. Absolutely delightful! The only very minor drawback is that the person helping me seemed annoyed that I didn't have cash and had pay by card...I never have cash when I really need it :-/. She over emphasized the discount if you pay in cash and so it felt strange, like it was an inconvenience. Also, I initially was only going to buy the slice but she was quick to tell me that there was a $5.00 minimum purchase to use your card so I added the drink. Tangy Tomato is worth trying! The deep dish was very good. The sauce had great flavor, and the dough had a good buttery taste. My only complaint is the dough did not have the texture of deep dish pizza doughs I've had in Chicago. I'm use to more of a biscuit dough, and Tangy's was a typical pizza dough. Regardless, we enjoyed the pizzas and would order again. I recommended trying their NY style CBR. read more

Crusts were just the right thickness and crunch to my liking. Deep dish was not really Chicago deep dish. The crust wasn't flaky, and there was not as much sauce as a traditional Chicago one. Absolutely delicious. It is the closest thing that you are going to get to Chicago style pizza in Upstate New York. Aside from not holding up to a direct comparison to Chicago style pizza like Lou Malnatti's, it is delicious anyway. Some might like it even better.. it's filling as all hell though. Full disclosure I struggled a little bit with the rating of this place. The chargrilled wings were good. Not amazing but def good. The Buffalo chicken wing deep dish pizza however was underwhelming. It didn't really taste like Buffalo and more like just eating grease. I definitely would not ever order that again. The classic deep dish and Chicago deep dish were both very good. It's definitely not like authentic Chicago deep dish pizza but is certainly delicious in its own right. The dough and sauce was great w the dough really being the star. I never could imagine the words too much cheese coming out of my mouth, however in this case I honestly think there was too much cheese. Lived in Chicago 27 years and, frankly, in my opinion this deep dish is better than most you would find there. Why? The crust. I am no huge deep dish aficionado (and I think it's well established that, as a rule, deep dish is mainly for tourists, yet native Chicagoans do give into temptation once in a while). So, about this crust. The big names in Chicago deep dish use a short crust that is under-seasoned (like they are afraid of actual salt, that level of under-seasoned). Tangy Tomato is making a more bread-like, risen-dough crust, more like a traditional pizza crust, just extra thick and with sidewalls. This is superior to the traditional Chicago shortening-rich, under-seasoned crust. The sauce, cheese, and meats Tangy Tomato added to its superior crust were delicious. I have heard a little buzz about this place so I gave it a try. I'm am all about thin pizza but was intrigued to try their Chicago style slices they had. I tried the classic which had cheese and sausage on it. I was impressed. Sauce was good and all the ingredients were fresh. It is very heavy so I would recommend sharing with someone. I wanted to take a nap after eating just one slice. While I was at the counter i noticed the regular thin pizza and tomato pie. We had the veggie deep dish and the flavor was great. The spicy wings were not that spicy, will definitely try the extra spicy wings next time. Someone recommended it to me because I'm a Chicagoan. So I literally got excited when they said that they served Chicago style pizza. So I ordered a large pizza and a 9inch deep dish just to try it all out. It was not bad pizza. Just not Chicago style. The thin crust pizza was good more like New York City style than Chicago. More so the deep dish was just a pan pizza to me the layout of the ingredients and the lacking of sauce on the deep dish was meh. But to say it's Chicago style it's not. This was a last minute decision to come to Tangy Tomato after traveling about 500 miles from Maine. We were tired and hungry, and I found this on Yelp. So, we ordered the TRADITIONAL pizza, half cheese and half sausage and green peppers. Loved, loved, LOVED the crust, was not doughy at all, it had a nice crunch when you bit into the pizza.
