Just got my driver's license a couple days ago after taking classes with George! I had taken a couple classes in Boston, but the driving schools there never taught me how to drive properly so I was really nervous whenever I drove. George really knows how to teach people how to drive from scratch. He is very patient and will guide you, step by step, on how to be a good driver. He stresses how important it is to drive slowly at first and won't freak out at your mistakes. As you can see from previous reviews, some people find George to be "inappropriate". George likes to analyze people's lives and sometimes will ask you questions that may seem intrusive. If you don't want to talk about things, just tell him and he will respect your decision. George' schedule is pretty packed, so you will have to book a couple days in advance. Make sure you give yourself enough time before and after the lesson because he sometimes might be late or will ask the next student to drive you to your destination. George is hands-down a great driving instructor, and a good driving instructor who gives a damn about whether his students actually learns is extremely rare. If you want to learn how to drive correctly and is down for a therapy lesson once in a while, George is your man. A friend of mine was tired of failing her driver's license test, so I decided to look on Yelp to see if we could find a reliable driving school that would help her pass the test. Tang's driving school has great rates of $50 for 2 hours of drive time. My friend practiced everyday for about a week and then her instructor signed her up to take her driver's license exam. She passed! I guess 5th times a charm right? Either way, her previous driving schools obviously didn't work . She didn't even need much practice with Tang's Driving School to pass the test. I wouldn't recommend this driving school. First off is affordable but he only takes cash payments, meaning that the business is not clear. The car is dirty and he stood me up twice in a row. Both lessons were at 0800am in the morning and he didn't show up. He will make you take your test at the Los Angeles DMV, which is probably one of the most unfriendly places to take your test according to multiple driving schools. The reason is very simple: If you fail, you'll have to hire him again and that means more business. Most of the driving schools won't recommend Hollywood or Los Angeles because the streets are too hectic and the staff are not very friendly. It's been long overdue, but I'm finally giving my review. I did pass my driving test, but learning with these instructors is such a pain. Expect a lot of pit stops for the restroom, no shows, and constant eating in the car. I can understand if they're at the DMV and need a quick lunch break while I'm in the car. When I was at the DMV, the instructor proceeded to review my turn signals, emergency lights, hand signals, horn, etc, I went to reach for the horn and the instructor (different instructor from my driving lessons) just slaps my hand and say "just show don't touch" like are you serious??? Don't touch me... I shouldn't have to tell you that. I honestly just dealt with it because I knew if I passed it would be the last time I'd see him. Didn't want to give them any problems, just wanted to get it over with. Even if I press the horn in the parking lot why the hell are you slapping my hand? I wouldn't recommend this place unless you are really desperate. I'm giving this place a two star because it inevitably help me pass driving exam. read more

I am also puzzled by the rave reviews here. Tang's must not have been busy when you guys took your training. Sorry for this long review but I am livid with this school and I don't want anyone else to go through what my son and I went through. TOTALLY WASTE OF MONEY!!! Anyway, on to my review. After reading the reviews from Yelp, I decided to go with Tang's. BAD MISTAKE! So I called on Nov 23rd 2011 for a Dec 19th -21st (2 hours each day for 3 days) appointment for my 16 year old son. I specifically requested for GEORGE as stated by the reviewers on here. The lady on the phone said, "sure no problem". The price was $210 for 6 hours + $80 if you want George to take the student to the DMV for his exam on the day of. So I agreed and made the appointment. I've been teaching my son the basics for about 20+ hours behind the wheel training already. So I thought he was ready to complete his 6 hours behind the wheel training by a certified DMV approved school. So Dec 19th comes along, I took the day off from work to meet with them. Waited for them to come or call but nothing. So after waiting for awhile, I called to check. I spoke to Mr. Tang and asked whats going on? He said he was sorry but they had to reschedule my appointment for tomorrow because they were too busy today. REALLY!!! I made an appointment over a month ago and they couldn't call or tell me that in advance. He then said, "I'll skip 2 hours of training for you." I replied back by saying, "This training is for my son, a new driver!! I want my son to get the full 6 hours!! I want George to be here at 10am tomorrow!!" This practice sounds illegal to me by the way (you be the judge). So he said "Ok, we'll see you tomorrow." Dec 20th, so I called in late for work, just so I can meet George. An hour after from said appointment time, I get a call from a person name Richardo and said he is outside. So I stated "Where's George, I requested George for all 3 days of training?" Richardo said "I dont know, Mr Tang sent me." Whatevers!! I was pissed!! Dec 21th, Mr Tang calls me and says he needs to change the appointment time from 10am to 5pm. I asked why. He said George is snowboarding. WTF!!!!! George came around 5pm. Dec 22nd, last day of training. Appointment was at noon and George was on time. Conclusions: Richardo or George did not teach my son parking techniques. Did not teach backing up in a straight line. I opt out on the additional $80 DMV day, cause I was so over-with with this school. PLEASE LISTEN TO ME!!! I highly recommend any parents out there to AVOID this school for your soon to be new driver. This school is not organize and does not practice good business ethics. WASTE OF TIME AND MONEY!! The guy comes to my house to teach me how to drive. There is another female student that finished her lesson. He tells me to go on the freeway but it is my first time ever touching the steering wheel or a car. "He tells me it'll be fine" so I can barely steer and I'm just all over the lanes. My siblings and I all took driving lessons from this place. From what I've read go with the younger guy because my siblings and I had the older instructors and they were asshole unless you are non-asian (base on the reviewers). The instructors would be late, or reschedule last minute or cancel for whatever reason. As for the driving part. If you don't know the basic of driving otherwise driving to the previous student's home that is far and you would have to take the freeway. It is like throwing you into the pool type of situation. I had to take the 110! That is a three lane freaking freeway with lots of curves. I got over it plus was driving slow. I suggest you drive on the middle lane. As for what they teach is to drive to the previous student home and then drive to a secluded place with less car and pedestrian to practice driving straight, turnings and at stop signs. They DO NOT teach you how to parallel park. Just to park onto the curb and how to spot that you had park closes to the curb because that is all the dmv ask for you to do. Tip for the dmv, if you hit the curb while trying to "park" it is automatic fail. read more

I recommend Tang Driving School if you're trying to get your license or trying to hold onto it. The instructor is very thorough and hardworking. He never even takes a lunch break! During my lesson we went to go pick up a student and he told me that this was a "shi** neighborhood" which I did not appreciate. During the lessons he takes off his shoes, talks so much which I found very distracting, and he would randomly tell me to stop somewhere so he can pick something up. Overall, I really enjoyed having George as my driving instructor. My first few lessons he asked me to drive around LA, not just the driving course, which is great because he trains you to become a good driver rather than a good behind the wheels test taker. He's able to reserve a spot for you at the DMV to take the exam within a few days, so reservation on your own is not necessary. I have also not driven for many years in Asia. The good news? I passed on my first try! George may look young but he's very experienced as this is family business. He gives excellent pointers and tips to remember and pull certain tricks to build up those driving skills. He's also very calm and confident. He picks you up and drops you off. I booked a session with Mr. Tang and he gave me a driving teacher. At the beginning, it was ok. Things were pretty smooth. But there were two things that I really didn't like and would like to tell other potential customers of the school. 1. After about driving for like an hour, the teacher (he didn't introduce himself his name at all) started to say that all first-time learner for driving need to take 4 hours or more for a day instead of 2 hours. I originally planned to just learn for 2 hours actually. I didn't respond to him because he wasn't talking about my lesson I thought. But in the end, the lesson was somehow extended to so long to more than 4 hours (which I will describe at the second point). At the end, he tried to double the amount of cost I originally willing to pay. And I did gave him in the end. 2. Weirdly enough, he likes to have another student sit at the back when he was teaching me the rules of driving. Then, he would talk to both of us even though separately, but it was quite distracting since I think it will get dangerous if he/I got distracted as me as a newbie was driving. After he made me drive the student to her home from DTLA to San Garbiel, then he made me to drive to Westwood to pick up another learner for teaching him driving (I actually wasn't aware of this at that moment cuz I was all focusing on the road conditions and driving). So when we get to Westwood, he made the learner drive to McDonald's so to drop me off for half an hour so he can teach him individually. Then we took turns for about two times. Then he made me to drive to my own place after the student was done. Overall, I felt the attention I got from the teacher was definitely diverted and it's a bit of a rip-off without knowing all the situations (plus all of them happening all at once) for pay double than I originally planned. I would do different is be better in communication and be VERY SERIOUS and CLEAR and how long I would take the lesson for and what conditions I want. I sure don't want any back-seaters any more. I tried out Tang's because they're $5-10/hr cheaper compared to other driving schools... but these are the issues I had with them (instructor: George): - LATE. Ten minutes late on the first lesson. I let this one slide. - TWO HOURS LATE for the second lesson. George texts me TEN MINUTES AFTER THE APPOINTMENT TIME to inform me that he cannot make it because he can't find the appropriate car keys. This is ridiculously UNPROFESSIONAL in SO MANY WAYS! He should have had the courtesy to inform me WELL BEFORE the appointment time (I'm pretty sure it takes more than 20 minutes to get to where I live, so he should have informed me accordingly to reschedule and apologize for the inconvenience), and he should have had the courtesy to CALL and not text. As friendly as George seems as a person, this is a BUSINESS TRANSACTION. **This was the dealbreaker for me because I needed to know that my instructor will be on-time for my DMV appointment for the driving test.** - This might just be personal preference, but I prefer my instructors (for anything) to be very professional in demeanor and a bit on the formal side. I don't like my instructors showing up wearing flip-flops or asking personal questions. But again, that's just me. - This was pretty much my first time driving and he made me take the freeway to take the previous student home. I didn't know how to make proper turns and lane changes! I barely knew how to maneuver the pedals, and he made me drive in the freeway! I don't care if the passenger side is equipped with separate pedals. This is completely unsafe and a good way to develop bad habits. (No, the throw-someone-in-the-pool method isn't quite fitting when you're learning how to drive.) Go elsewhere for driving school. They are sloppy with pick up times, rarely answer back phone calls, and frequently request to reschedule appointment times. My instructor kept on puffing on a huge e-cig while I was driving for the first time, which was super unprofessional and obnoxious. His methods of teaching I found to be terrible; I don't understand why there are some rave reviews of his methods. Whenever I made a mistake he would say "oh yeah you just failed" over and over again. I understand the importance of learning from mistakes but this did nothing but frustrate me and cause further anxiety behind the wheel. The owner is arrogant and irrational over the phone. She thinks her school is the best and keeps hanging up the phone when you are asking questions. The instructors speak minimal English, are very rude and have heavy accents. They do not teach well and insult you when you make mistakes. I just got my drivers license 2 weeks ago, all thanks to George! George was a super patient and calm driving instructor even during my first few lessons when I'd press the gas or breaks too suddenly or make really wide turns. But of course, these things only happened before I got my license. When I started driving on the first day, I was really nervous. But good thing George is really funny because that helped me to relax which made learning how to drive a fun process instead of something scary and dreadful. I really feel like my driving has improved a lot from day 1 to day 7. Even though it only took a week, I really learned a lot in that short time. Now when I drive, I still think about all the helpful hints and tips that George has drilled into my brain. George is a driving instructor who genuinely cares about his students and their driving. If you've been one of George's students, you'll probably understand what I mean. He makes you feel safe in his car and lets you test your limits with your driving. But don't worry, because George has his own set of gas and break pedal on his side so he will take over if he finds you getting yourself in a dangerous situation. Although the reviews about his scheduling mishaps may be true, it's only because George is a really busy person but hey, everyone makes mistakes. It took me 2 tries at the DMV before I got my license, but I blame the first time to me being super nervous! It honestly helps a lot to stay calm but not to be too confident because overconfidence can lead you to act recklessly sometimes. I don't know why would anybody write anything negative about this driving school because George is simply AWESOME!!! He is experienced , calm and nice . I am puzzled by the rave reviews here. There used to be two contact numbers on Yelp. When I called the first time, a rude lady picked up, and she did not sound like she wanted to talk to me at all. The young instructor other reviewers mentioned answered when I called the alternative number, and he sounded fine. My biggest problem with the young instructor was that he was late to two lessons, once by as much as forty minutes, even after confirmations. Both times when I called him after the meeting time had passed, he sounded like he had just woken up. I also felt that he spent a lot of time on things that were not essential to the driving test, and random chats that sometimes distracted my driving. Two stars for him. Another instructor from the same school gave me one lesson, and I liked him better because he told me what to beware of specifically during the driving test. Four stars for this instructor. I am not sure how good his English is, though. The good rates other reviewers mentioned were true. Nonetheless, I had spent 30 to 75 minutes on the freeway each time. Originally, I was OK with it because I thought driving the prior student home was the standard practice. However, I later took lessons with another driving school; I paid a little more for lessons of the same length, but the entire time was dedicated to practicing for the driving test, not to mention the instructors walked me through the whole test process and gave me lots of to-the-point advice. I went on to get an easy pass in my first driving test. The effective rates ended up to be simiar, but I felt that my time was spent much more efficiently with the second driving school. read more

First off, this is definitely the cheapest driving school you can find in LA. George was my instructor and he's simply awesome! What I really enjoyed was that throughout the driving class, he kept conversing with me. It didn't feel like I was taking a class and I eventually got comfortable driving. George Tang was a highly informative, patient, & calming instructor! If you want to learn with someone who is thorough and most importantly SAFE, I definitely recommend calling him. It took me about six lessons I think because I foolishly stopped practicing for a couple of months due to my busy schedule. However, I called him up again early this month (Jan) because I needed to get my license in a short amount of time. With his guidance & efficient criticism, I was able to quickly pass my test & all I had to do was wait for my license to arrive. Don't drag out learning how to drive. Tangs Driving School is great! My instructor (Steven) was very good and patient with me. He taught me all the rules I didn't know. When I took my drive test at the DMV I passed with minimal 5 errors! Although we had to go pick up another student when my session was over or another student had to come pick me up while Steven was with him, was a little weird. The instructors were late sometimes but they made up for the lost time by adding on time at the end of the lesson. The instructors are very friendly and help you learn the best way possible!!! read more

I had my driving test in a little over a week and so I decided to get some additional lessons with a driving school aside from the practice I was doing on my own. I got in contact with Tang's son and he was very accommodating and responded very fast. I was able to text him, which for me is a lot easier to do throughout the day. He was very flexible with his schedule and picked me up from my house. I was a little off put at his casual demeanor, however, which is where this 2 star review starts. When we got into the car he wasn't very informative and we just sort of set off driving. I noticed he wasn't wearing shoes, which for me was really irritating. His style of teaching did not go over well with me. He likes to talk a lot which I suppose some students might enjoy as a relaxer but for me it was a major distraction as he would give small directions or pointers in between and I felt like he would blindside me with these comments, which only made me flustered and nervous. During our lesson, he had me drive to meet his girlfriend to drop off some personal items and pick up food. I'm sorry but if I am paying you to teach me, it is absolutely rude to run personal errands during my paid time. He then proceeded to eat in the car while I drove, even after I told him the very greasy smell of the food was distracting. Additionally, when I asked him what I should do/should have done in certain driving scenarios, instead of telling me what he thought, he would tell me that HE, as a very experienced driver (which he couldn't stop talking about) could handle these situations but because I'm not as experienced as him, I can't. Overall it was a very irritating and frustrating lesson and I felt I didn't get anything worthwhile out of it. I understand that he's a young instructor but as someone who is being paid for a service for a limited amount of time, there's no excuse for the lack of professionalism at all. I was just on Yelp and feel like I need to update this review as my previous one was at the beginning of my lessons and doesn't fully capture my experiences here. In August, I will have had my license for two years now. Everybody who has ever sat in my car while I was driving has commented on how good of a driver I am and how safe they feel with me driving... even when I am going over 20 mph over the speed limit. I picked up so many great habits from my instructor. The "young guy" I reference in my previous review is (the obviously very popular) George Tang; I just didn't mention his name for reasons that now don't matter. I originally docked a star because for my first one or two lessons, Mr. Tang (George's father) and the lady who answers the phone (George's mom... this really is a family business) did a really bad job scheduling my appointments. Originally my mom scheduled my first behind-the-wheel appointment with his mom about a month before my actual appointment, but something or another happened and nobody showed up at my door. My aunt had Mr. Tang's cell phone number away somewhere (family friends and most of my family had gone through this driving school)... and two hours after my original appointment George arrived. After this lesson, I was sold on him BUT he didn't give me his phone number! So I had to call the driving school number listed here and the above process was repeated one more time with some slight variations. I MADE SURE to get his number this time. So yes, the reviews commenting on the scheduling issues are absolutely true. So why the five star review? Well for one, the price is amazing. My parents made me do the whole 20 hour package behind-the-wheel... yes parents, totally necessary. 20 hours was almost as cheap as what some of my friends paid for 6 hours! ridiculous. This driving school is absolutely adored in the SGV Asian community. Honestly, part of that is because some of their practices can be a bit shady at times... but it's also because there's no fear of a language barrier here. ...and then there's George. He's probably the only reason this place has the reviews it does. Honestly, most of their other instructors suck.. except the father and son (Mr. Tang and George). I'm not sure if they're still teaching now (it's been two years since my lessons) but if they do, request them and don't take no for an answer. George is like that straight "gay best friend" that girls just love to have... not sure how else to put it ahhah. He's really funny and calm. He makes you feel comfortable and safe in his car and (at least I think) is a very, very good teacher. He notices ALL, and I mean ALL of your bad driving habits and goes over them again and again until they're gone. We drove around in circles until he got dizzy once because he thought my right turns were too wide. He'll take you on the freeway which I know a lot of other instructors don't like doing, and not just to drop off another student. If you have anything in particular you want to work on, just let him know. ...and who can turn down boba? George, if you read this, thanks for getting me my license (and for some reason I still remember you're vegetarian and like the veggie burger at in-n-out b/c you lectured me about not knowing this about you or something.... anyways...) IMPORTANT TIP! If you do get George as an instructor, ASK HIM FOR HIS PHONE NUMBER. Very important if you ever want another lesson. Schedule EVERYTHING through him. Scheduling through the company is useless based on my experiences. He's actually pretty punctual if you SCHEDULE IT THROUGH HIM. If I could give a ZERO star, I would. Here is the story. I scheduled an appointment for a relative with George at Tang's Driving School on 10/19/15 at noon. The appointment was even confirmed on 10/18/15. The instructor (assuming it is George himself) did not show up at the place of pick up on the date the lesson was scheduled. The student waited over 45 minutes on site. Try calling him/or the school and all calls and text messages got unanswered. This is terrible. I could be understanding has there been a call or a text message saying the instructor is running late due to some unexpected circumstances and has to reschedule. But leaving students hanging is just not a right business practice. If this is the way the school is run, please reconsider before any others would like to use Tang's Driving School for his or her lessons. read more

George is a great teacher! After a couple days of practicing with George, I felt way more confident with my driving! I think the best thing that George does is make you feel comfortable. He always points out mistakes AFTER not DURING so you don't freak out. Overall, he's chill but very experienced as a driving teacher. With the DMV being packed nowadays, it's easier making appointments through George, and his prices are fair and affordable! Highly recommend. I had one driving lesson with the owner, George. His actual driving instruction was satisfactory--he seemed familiar with the rules of the road. However, I could never recommend his services to anyone because of his grossly inappropriate behavior. After some comments that were just socially inappropriate (what country are you from? were you bullied in school?) he escalated to sexual harassment. I made the mistake of answering "no" when he asked whether I had a boyfriend. As he was correcting my driving, he asked whether I had had a boyfriend in the past. I said yes. When he asked "were you and your boyfriend sexually active" my eyes must have popped out of my head. I stammered something along the lines of "why are you asking me that." He replied "I thought it was better than asking if you were a virgin." I was still shocked and said that I would be more comfortable if we only talked about the rules of the road. Dear George: there is never a good way to find out if your young female student is a virgin. In retrospect, I wish that I had ended the driving lesson right then and there. I would not advise any driving student to put themselves in the position of being stuck in San Marino in George's car with George. read more

AMAZING IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT. honestly, he is the best driving instructor you can ask for. i have literally recommended him to all of my friends and they love him! he is super friendly and easy to get along with and is faarr from the stereotypical boring instructor that just gives you order. seriously, hes really outgoing and finds a way to get along with all of his students. i legitimately looked forward to all of my lessons with him because hes just that good! i think the best part about having george as my instructor is the fact that we formed a friendship and that i was super comfortable around him. we werent strictly on a student to teacher basis, but actually friends which helped me relax alot while driving. he is super patient and calm and really good at pointing out your mistakes and helping you fix them without making you feel bad. i have never had a problem with george not showing up on time. if anything, ive yelled at him for coming too early because i never anticipated for him to come 10min beforehand. even though i was scared at first, i am actually really glad that he took me on the freeway during our first lesson. keep in mind that im a 16yr old girl. i was beyond terrified, so the fact that im saying now that it was exceedingly beneficial that he did that means alot. because i was able to drive decently on the freeway, i was fearless once i got back onto the local streets. trust me, GEORGE TANG KNOWS WHAT HES DOING.
