Driving has always been something that gave me such anxiety over the years. I lived in Chicago for my teens/20s and didn't need a license (public transit is solid there), but moved to LA and you need to know how to drive here. After reading tons of reviews and contacting various driving schools in the area, I landed on Royals. It was so easy to get started and they had an appointment available the day after I called to inquire. I took 12 hours of driving lessons & the DMV exam with Jorge. I couldn't be happier with my experience. He was kind, funny, patient, and punctual. He taught me the rules of the road, how to be a safe/defensive driver, and gave me the confidence to take my test just a month after starting my lessons. I can actually say that I'm going to miss hanging out with him hahaha. Jorge, if you're reading this--thank you so much for everything! You're the best. Some other notes about the services through Royals: -Lessons are 2 hours (including pick up & drop off) -You can pay through check or Zelle -You WILL drive on the street your first day, so be ready. -They offer lessons as early as 6am which worked perfectly with my schedule. -The instructors have gas pedals & brake pedals on the passenger side of the car. -I learned to drive in a Prius C, but I'm sure they have other options. -After you get the hang of things, you can suggest to your driver what you'd like to practice more (although they're likely already aware). For example, I wanted more practice with parallel parking & freeway. -They go with you to the DMV (if you purchase that service), and are well versed in the processes--where to go, who to talk to. It was seamless. Anyway, highly recommend this driving school. I might even take stick shift lessons at some point, too! Thanks again! read more

Before anything, I will make one thing clear: I am that kind of person, who never leaves review despite how great the service was. However, this time it is different. I HAD to leave a review, because it was the most amazing driving experience I had. Trust me, I had to go through pretty much the same experiences in S. Korea but this one was way better. Today I passed my driving test with help of my beloved instructor -- Jorge. He is very patient and caring. When I started taking the lesson, I was really afraid. It's been few years ever since I was away from the car and I didn't want to kill anyone. However, Jorge was always there for me. Not only his skills calmed me down (He is great at driving, of course), but also he encouraged me to drive with courage. And I always hear the same saying from every driver I've ever met: "Safety is always the best. However, if you be a coward, it can lead to worse accidents." Jorge trained me to be brave, yet still cautious and skillful driver. I stayed with him for 6+a hours on the road in Hollywood and Koreatown (Personally I think these locations have the worst traffic.) and didn't even notice the time swinging by. It seems like I am only talking about good stuff here, so I'll be very honest: the only problem I had with Royal Driving School was communication. However, it is VERY MINOR and they came back to me very soon. And I absolutely had no problem with Jorge in terms of communicating. He will always be there for you. Don't be afraid to choose him as your instructor. He knows the best. I am really going to miss him. 5/5 read more

My instructor was Leo, and today I passed my behind-the-wheel test on my first try. The price of the lessons were affordable, and you are getting what you paid for. Leo is patient, understanding, and also provides a great learning environment where you don't feel stressed. I deal with anxiety on a regular basis, but I was calm and collected with Leo. Whenever he speaks, he has a soft voice, but you can hear all of his instructions. He takes total control over the car when necessary, which makes me feel a lot safer. Leo also gives you an advance warning when you are going to take a left or right, which helps me not panic. As you're driving, he gives you tips on how to improve that you can think about while driving. He is also very experienced in the driving exam and knows what you will be tested on. Nothing during the exam was new because I practiced it already with Leo. During the day of the test, we went around the area where the DMV is located to get used to the roads there. He knows which DMV's are good to take your exam at, because some are harder than others. I also made sure to look up DMV route videos on youtube, and ended up having the exam same route on my test today. This service is amazing, and I would recommend it to any new drivers. I had no experience driving a car, but now I feel confident to drive. I took 2 hour lessons for 4 days, and was able to pass the exam easily. Leo is a great instructor, and person. I'm an on and off student driver who's had previous lessons years before and only last year had the courage to get a driver's license, and only a month and half left before the test day. Was super nervous as this was also Los Angeles and I was really intimidated by traffic so I decided to get driving lessons and found the Royal's Driving School to be close to where I live and also within my budget. I really appreciate how easy it was to contact them both by email and by phone, get a pricing range and a recommendation of hours (instead of say pushing for the maximum) and setting up a 3 lesson/6 hr scheduled appointment. Was very fortunate that I was assigned Jorge as he was punctual, cordial, and as a teacher very calm, patient and encouraging. If I made mistakes with my turns he'd immediately repeat the exercise so I wouldn't forget, and also pointed out the important practices the test instructor will be looking for me to do when I take the test (like checking mirrors and blind spots when I change lanes, etc) I had also paid to rent their vehicle for my test day so what Jorge decided we should do was split up my third lesson: That way he could pick me up an hour and a half earlier and I could have a warm up practice right before the test. So after driving and a 25 (?) minute test run (was too nervous to pay attention to the test time) I passed on my first attempt! Thank you very much again for the lessons and service. read more

Leo is changing my life. First off, I never leave Yelp reviews but this driving school warrants the creation of a Yelp account. Secondly I went to two different Los Angeles driving schools. And no disrespect to the other school, but their teacher's style was kind of hard and fast. I'm a slow learner with massive driving anxiety and I felt stressed with him. I thought about quitting entirely because the whole ordeal just seemed impossibly hard. Then I decided to try a different driving school, just in case a different teacher could help a lost cause. And it worked. Leo changed everything for me! Leo is the Mister Rogers of driving instructors. He's very alert, so he's 100% driving with you. He's never spaced out, he's 100% focused on the road. But he's calm and peaceful and he's constantly giving you helpful tips. I've had 7 lessons with him and I'm still learning something valuable every time we go out. Every dollar is well spent with this man. He makes little jokes like "I see you stopped hating the little arrows on the ground." So a very big thank you to Leo and to the whole school. And honestly, a shout out to EVERY driving teacher in EVERY school. What an admirable unsung profession. These people literally risk their lives every day to teach us newbie greenhorns. One of the best services I had! I had a huge fear of driving esp the city of LA is too busy! But i had the best instructor- Sir Leo. He was very patient and taught me well w driving. I actually had a different instructor at first (Patrick) - Didnt like his service- he wasnt teaching me, just eating and texting while on lesson. Had to call them to change my instructor and they gave Sir Leo! Had a 8 hrs lesson with Sir Leo and passed my driver's license! He explained rule of the roads well and everything. He is just the best!! You wont be nervous around him bc he knows what he's doing and the best on what he do! THANK U SIR LEO! Got my license now. I actually thought i wont be driving in my whole life! Also recommend Jonathan - he went to dmv with me for road test. Had an issue with dmv and we had to wait 2 hours for them to fix it, and Jonathan was very patient and understanding about everything. My appointment was at 11 am and went out to dmv by 2pm! I can't recommend Jorge enough! He was an incredible driving instructor and I truly believe it makes all the difference who you're in the car with. From day one, he never made me feel nervous, intimidated, or judged. Instead, he created such a calm and encouraging environment that helped me build confidence behind the wheel. As of the time I'm writing this I just recently received my drivers license, it had taken me a long while to do so, me coming to Royals Driving School was not only because they have some of the best prices or drivers! But a last ditch effort for my drivers license, my first instructor and I weren't ready a fit, no problem though, I got on the phone with operator the same day about my instructor, the following week I had a new instructor, Raymond Maldonado. From my very first lesson with him, I already knew I was going to get my license, this instructor is so polite, extremely courteous, and very accommodating with your learning speed. He has a very structured learning plan, and with phases and little sayings to help you remember, making learning way easier, this in particular helped myself the most. He has no issues repeating or going back over a teaching point, while demonstrating and clarifying clearly for your understanding. With a very flexible schedule and an extremely friendly approach, if you're thinking about Royals Driving School, ask for Raymond Maldonado, or (Ray) specifically! read more

I am moving to Royals Driving School because the previous school was making me stressed out I feel like the instructor was forcing to drive the same way like him, scold me too early or too fast turning. Back to Royals Driving School, Jorge is my instructor. He seems cheerful yet still knowledgeable at the same time. He put trust on me while driving. When I made a mistake, he reminded me and even taught me nicely. He drew on paper how to pull over, making sure I know what he meant during backing up while check up on black (road) and white (pedestrian) limit on side mirror. Improvement for him: He needs to be clear with the services. On 1st lesson, He asked whether I want to schedule my test on my own or him? He only asked that. I was a bit confused, and I know I should have asked too. I was oke he could do that. Later on, he just told me to bring $220. So I didn't know it's another payment. He should have told me right away on 1st lesson that it's another payment. Almost put 3 or 4 star for that. But I guess it's still worth it because I passed on first try. read more

Jorge did the Dam thing, he got me right for my very particular test. My situation was different because I was already an experienced driver and I just had to take the test because I got a certain moving violation that impacted my CDL and forced me to have to take a drive test again . I first went to the Bell Flower Office, but I didn't utilize the service of Jorge , because in my mind I was like, "I already know how to drive." Little did I know that Bell Flower was full of Racist Hispanics administering the test and they don't like Blacks so I failed my first test. I didn't take any chances the second time and switched it over to the Hollywood DMV, hired Jorge and he got me ready and told me about a the small minor details that they would look for and even I used his car to take the tests. I passed on my first run, the instructor was Asian so this probably helped to . He said he didn't understand why I had to take the test again because I was a great driver, but I told him I failed the first time because I was driving while Black. So I really didn't know what to expect when reaching out and booking my first appointment, but it was surprisingly extremely calming and educational from the very beginning. The instructors all know how to work with drivers of all calibers, they ensure your safety and well-being the entire time, and give you the best tips/ advice for driving tests, even going out of the way to book the driving test with you, to ensure you know how to go about it correctly, and answer any questions you have. It was $250 for 6 hours total of driving instructing, and then $140 each driving test if you choose to use their vehicle, which makes it extremely convenient for anyone who doesn't yet have their own car, and if there is ever extra time prior to a test, they'll take the opportunity to drive the test route with you to familiarize yourself with the road. Jorge is a very kind, professional and relentlessly patient driving instructor. There is a peace sitting hours on end in a car with a person with such good energy - he is funny but also really professional and provides consistent and clear feedback. I had a rough time with a bad instructor at a different school for my first couple of classes and while learning is so much about practice - the instructor makes all the difference. I will remain forever grateful to Jorge for teaching me such an important life skill - I am a 35 year old learning to drive for the first time and I passed my test on the first try. As I drive around LA, I can always hear Jorge's repeated reminders in my head - signal, mirror, ooover the shoulder :) do yourself a favor and see if you can find some time to learn from this wonderful person. Tuve cuatro clases con Jorge. El es muy paciente y cuando me equivocaba el era muy claro en explicarme cual había sido mi error. Incluso volvíamos a repetir el tramo donde me había equivocado para que corrija y nos aseguremos que haya entendido cuál era la manera correcta. Mi auto es manual. La mayoría de las escuelas de manejo te enseñan con autos automáticos. Además de los automáticos ellos tienen uno manual con pedales en el lado del copiloto. Así Jorge frenaba o avanzaba el auto cuando yo cometía un error y era necesario corregir de inmediato. Si quieren sacar cita con Jorge para un fin de semana les recomiendo que lo hagan con tiempo porque su agenda se llena rápido. De las 4 clases, yo me encontré dos veces con Jorge en la escuela y las otras dos fueron: una cerca a mi casa y la otra cerca al DMV de Arleta donde daría mi examen. I passed my test in one go!!! I was not a driver before this. I had a Korean license but I had never really used it. I took some courses last summer too but never in LA and I needed to get to know these streets before taking the test. I took 6 hrs with Jorge who taught me everything I needed for the test with great energy. I was so nervous about it but thanks to this school that took me from training to getting all the paperwork done, it made everything sooo much easier for me. I didn't have to worry about getting a car and insurance to practice and take the test. Jorge was with me from beginning to end like a guardian on test day. I actually thought I failed it because the instructor just told me I made 9 mistakes. But when I showed Jorge the paperworks he was like, "YOU PASSED!" I could not have been happier. I cannot recommend Jorge enough! I was extremely nervous and anxious about taking my driving test, but from the very beginning he made me feel calm, comfortable, and confident behind the wheel. He is incredibly patient, knowledgeable, and explains everything in a way that's easy to understand without ever making you feel pressured. As a former law enforcement officer familiar with all traffic laws, I was unsure of how this process was going to go. I must say, the staff at Royals went above and beyond their duties. Emily was extremely helpful with scheduling and coordinating lesson times, assisting us even after hours. Ray, my daughter's instructor, was very patient, informative and accommodating with our situation. Even on the day of the test, he picked up my daughter early and had her do a run through the test area, which built my daughter's confidence even more. I practiced with her a few times, so I was having doubts about the test. Ray assured me that she was ready and had no doubt she would pass. We'll, she did pass with minimal discrepancies. I have…read moretaken 6 hrs of classes in a rural area, but never driven in LA before, so I wanted to book a class here. The lady who answered the phone was very nice and helped me with finding a class the same week. On the day of the scheduled class, Luis was prompt and courteous. He arrived on time, and after showing him my permit and ID, we went over some basics such as lane change, checking blind spots, and how to turn the steering wheel. He personally got out of the vehicle to show me exactly where I needed to check, and had me practice a couple times. After that we were on the road. I felt like I got so much of out this class!! It's amazing what we did in the span of two hours. We practiced lane change, backing up, stop signs, and making left/right turns. We then went inside of Santa Monica DMV to practice making left/right turns and also parking in a diagonal space. After, we spent a good chunk of time driving around the DMV to familiarize myself with the area and to get more practice. We ended the class driving back to my apartment, and went over a quick summary of the class. Luis is such a pleasant & sweet instructor and I can tell he genuinely loves teaching. I had such an amazing time getting a single lesson from Luis.

After about a year, I started taking weekly driving lessons with instructors, and within a couple of months, I was able to pass my driver's test just before my permit expired. I got my license at 25, and honestly, I sometimes feel like I'm behind compared to others who got theirs much earlier. Now, I'm in the process of purchasing my own vehicle, which I know will be a big step for me. Having a car is important, especially for emergencies and having the freedom to get where I need to go. Without this driving school and the support of its instructors, I don't think I would have been able to do it. If you're out there feeling afraid, behind, or like it's too late, don't give up. It doesn't hurt to try. I was scared too, and I still made it happen. It's possible.

When I moved back to Southern California and had to relearn how to drive, it was a stressful experience for both me and the family and friends who helped me practice. They were genuinely nervous riding with me at times, and I was especially anxious about lane changes, reversing, and parking. Oxford Driving School was able to fit me in for a same-week lesson despite my full-time work schedule, and the booking process was very smooth. I especially wanted to give my instructor, Chie, a shout-out. She was sweet, kind, encouraging, and very attentive to safety throughout our drive. She gave me clear, honest feedback about what I still needed to improve, particularly with parking, lane changes, speed, and traffic checks, while explaining corrections in a way that was constructive. I also appreciated that she struck a good balance between instruction and independence. She kept a close eye on what I was doing and stepped in when appropriate, but she also gave me opportunities to practice judging traffic gaps and making driving decisions for myself. She was sincerely invested in helping me understand how to reverse and park correctly rather than simply getting through the lesson. And somehow, she was in a great mood on a Saturday morning before 10 AM! As someone who is definitely not a morning person, I consider that a colossal feat. I had a very different experience with a driving school when I was a teenager, so I'm especially grateful for how positive and constructive this lesson was. This man is probably around 50 and I'm 21 and I…read moreshowed up trying to learn how to drive, and he told me twice that my tattoo was "cute" (commented on two different tattoos) and that my voice was "cute." He also wasn't even a good instructor, we would get to a dead end and I'd have to ask him to turn left or right while being fully stopped. He reached over and adjusted my wheel slightly while on a residential street approximately 5 times without saying a word. I got annoyed and I asked him, "am I driving too close to the other cars?" to which he replied "yes." You're supposed to tell me that! I have reason to believe that it was partially to invade my space especially due to the flirty comments. I've never had another instructor behave this way before, tried him out and was disappointed. I asked for a refund for just that lesson after I had switched to another instructor for my remaining 4 hours I had prepaid as part of the package. I did this to not lose any more money to this company, and another instructor was sufficient for the remaining lessons. When I asked for one for ONLY the lesson with Nathaniel (which they should have offered in the first place), they offered me a complimentary lesson with another instructor instead, stating that they "understood my frustration" and would "have a conversation with him." This completely dodges accountability. This service is not what I paid for and I will be having to go out of my way to file a charge dispute with my bank to make things right. I also reported him to the DMV already online. When I posted about the school and reporting the school to the DMV on my Instagram account, one of my old coworkers reached out to me. She's 18. I didn't even mention his name in my post, yet she had asked me "did you get Nathaniel?". I was like "how the heck did you know?" And apparently he had harassed her too. He thought she was underage and still proceeded to make inappropriate comments about her height. Take this review as a warning. This man shouldn't be teaching driving to anybody ESPECIALLY high schoolers because he is abusing his position of power to harass young girls and women. They responded to this review alerting me that they were advised to sue. As a response, I have attached the email, which includes no personal information about anyone whatsoever, in which they acknowledged that his behavior was unacceptable, not "small talk." They also included in their public response to my review that "lessons are 2 hours long and can be stopped at any time if students feel uncomfortable." This sentence honestly really frustrated me because I feel that it inappropriately shifts the responsibility onto me, a new driver who did not know where we even were on the road or how to get back to the school, to tell a man 3 times my size and double my age while alone in the car with him and reliant on his guidance, that I feel uncomfortable and wish to stop the lesson and head back. I consider this victim blaming. The fact that I reached out the day after and did everything I could to inform them of his behavior and state that I was no longer comfortable working with him after the lesson should have been enough for them to absolve me of blame from this situation. Their response speaks for itself. I stand by my review and encourage fellow Yelpers to always share their experiences, good or bad.

Since from the beginning, everyone who works for Westwood Driving School is a friendly and professional attitude. When I explained my bad experiences about another driving school and with my friends' car, I talked to Laura on the phone, and she listened to me with patience and helped me to book for a lesson with Eduardo. After the lesson, Eduardo explained my mistakes on the paper, also on the road. He was calm and explained every detail for safe driving with great tips very well. I'll always remember those tips while I drive. I also had a lesson from Manny. He was also professional, calm and funny. Thank you to all at Westwood Driving School; you are all my angels and stars. My actual DMV driving exam was extremely traumatic but I still passed the first time, and everything Angel reviewed with me was highly applicable. When I called to complain the company about the instructor (RAUL), and his complete inappropiate behaviour, they lied to me that they will reschedule a class with another teacher. Furthermore, the teacher Raul call me and very rudely start screaming on the phone, disrespecting me and my son and saying that my son was a liar. I asked to speak with a supervisor or management, to address the problem, but they declined to give me the info. Use another more professional company, it will be better spent with some company that cares about teaching and not insulting the clients.
