I am having fun reading all this american guys reviews, just because I am mexican and I can´t understand why they give more importance to the rice instead of the meat, and being honest, it is very hard to find a real mexican restaurant in Massachusetts, Chipotle, Taco Bell and all that kind of restaurants are just horrible jokes of the real meaning of mexican food. First of all, latin people working there, nobody can give you a better service than latin people, kindness, patience, human values before all. The variety of food is awesome, I mean, when you go to a "mexican restaurant" here they sell you "Chicken burrito, beef burrito. pork burrito", here is the only place where you can find "Carnitas, quesadilllas, fajitas". The place seems to be really mexican, with mexican art table covers, and "Jarritos" soda, being there is feeling like being in Mexico. For a while, I ate at Mango Tango's quite often, mostly because it was something a little different than the regular sandwich for lunch of dinner. But then I realized "Why the heck am I eating this?" Unfortunately, it's not really all that good, which pains me to say this because the people there are extremely nice and try to provide a good atmosphere to eat at. Paying extra for sour cream, salsa, and jalapenos is something that you really shouldn't have to do. And if you don't get the extra toppings, your burrito is really going to be a bland combo of rice, beans, and meat. If you are craving Mexican in Newton, this is probably the quickest and best place, but try and venture out of the city to get better food. read more

Tango Mango is OK. The Boston burrito scene has grown considerably in the last few years, but there are still very few (if any) truly good places. Tango Mango's success is indicative of an environment where the demand for good burritos is still stronger then the supply. As such, a "OK" place can make a killing. If Tango Mango were in CA, they would go out of business very quickly. Kind of like how pizza in Boston can be mediocre but commercially successful. Ironically, there is nothing with Mango on the menu. Catchy name though. On a good day, Tango Mango provides good burritos made well. They are pretty small, but you can pay more to make them bigger. Negatives: Small burritos, stingy with every ingredient compromising overall burrito balance, frequently dry meats Positives: On a good day at the right time, they can make a decent burrito. Ingredient quality varies, but has never been bad the 20 or so times I have been there. The Chili Verde (lame not fresh tasting verde sauce) and Carnitas (way too dry, and cut too far in advance of burrito construction) are bad, however. All the other stuff is at least good. They offer a portobello quesadilla, but do not offer a portobello burrito, which I think is weird. Considering the inflationary environment that restaurant operators exist in , I am almost glad that Tango Mango's prices are such that they will sustain as a business. I often hear fellow customers complaining, but the reality is that good ingredients cost more than they used to. In all, I am glad there is a quick service "Mexicanish" place in Newton Center. I also feel better paying less than $10 for a Mexicanish meal than paying $20 at Sol Azteca for similarly "good-but-not-great-makes-you-wish-you-were-in-CA-or Mexico" food. read more

The food here is decent. I'll give it that. The thing that knocks Tango Mango down to one star is the price and the service. Both despicable. I went in there the other day to get a burrito and they gave me very little meat. So, I asked for a bit more and they gave it to me. When I went to pay, the lady behind the counter charged me an extra $2. Ridiculous. After I asked why a burrito with rice, chicken and cheese was costing me $8.03, she refused to answer me, and was downright rude. I went to check the menu and for extra meat it said $1.50. (Ridiculous anyway for the amount of meat they give you) She refused to change the price and was extremely disrespectful. Unfortunately, this is the only quick burrito place in Newton Centre so they have a monopoly. Anyone want to open up a reasonably priced and nicely staffed Mexican place in Newton Centre? Would be nice..... So, when you're in the mood for a quick burrito and you're able to drive the extra 5 minutes, hit up Anna's in Brookline. The price of my burrito is different every time I come and i order the SAME thing... that just really annoys me. But I do love my steak burrito. Their guacamole is really 'runny' and they barely put anything. I've experimented and it tastes the same if you skip it. I would say save your money and don't add it ... but the price is different every time. I would give more stars but... they raised their prices and there appears to be no consistency. Also the bathroom is disgusting and the last couple times there never was no soap in the dispenser... which worries me since employees use it. read more

One thing is it can be bland at times, I got a veggie last time I went and it didn't really pack much flavor, I probably wouldn't get it again. I love coming here once in a while to get a quesadilla! They are not only huge but they are so flavorful! The great thing about their quesadillas are that they are like a burrito but with double the cheese! Only downside to this is the flavor. I used to be a big Anna's follower, until I discovered Tango Mango. It is the best burrito place in the area and surpasses Anna's, Boca Grande, Chipotle and Bolocco. It's not even a competition. I'd give this place 1 star just based on the bland quality of the food, but the poor experience also tops it off nicely. I've ordered two burritos from this place, once with spicy chicken and once with grilled chicken. Both tasted the same... boring. This is what happens when someone gets the bright idea of opening a Mexican fast food restaurant to cash in on peoples love for burritos and tries to follow a color by number formula with no inspiration. The first burrito I ordered last week I added sour cream, which was an additional 75 cents. At least on the menu it does mention that sour cream and guacamole are an additional cost, although the specific cost is not posted. In my opinion, 75 cents for a little sour cream on your burrito is pushing the limit of fairness. I like my food spicy, and since the "spicy chicken" didn't taste like it had so much as salt on it as a seasoning, I decided to add jalapeños to my latest burrito. It was a surprise when I got to the cash register that the 4 jalapeños (it was the end of the bucket, so thats all they put on it) cost me an extra 50 cents. When I asked the proprietoress at the cash register why the jalapeños cost extra, even though it wasn't posted anywhere, her answer was "Always. They always cost extra.". I eat a lot of burritos, and personally I've never been charged for jalapeños, anywhere, similarly as I've never been charged extra for ketchup at McDonald's. I guess the difference between me buying 100 burritos from this place or stopping at 2 is 50 cents and a less than stellar product. And I still have half of this burrito to eat. read more

As I watch them make my burrito I always think that it looks so small for $7, but then halfway through the thing I always wonder if I will be able to finish it. :) Friendly servers, fresh ingredients, and if you can't find a place to park there is a big lot behind CVS. Let us start with this. If you are the kind of person that likes the terrible, dry, non-melted cheese, and dominantly rice filled burritos of Chipotle, then you won't agree with my review. I'm the kind of person that wants great flavors packed with gooey sauces and cheese. I don't settle with boring non-melty burritos. Now that you know where I am coming from, I am quite surprised at all of the negativity in the reviews of this place. I have lived in Newton my whole life and think that Tango Mango has only improved over time. I really like that they have a balance of ingredients in every burrito they make. Almost every bite has that mixture of everything you want. They don't just plop a little of this and that, then add a bunch of rice to fill it in. The food tastes great, the staff is very friendly, the owner is almost always at the cash register, and they have given me free cornbread on several occasions. They introduced the "Black Cajun" chicken burrito a while back and it is now one of my favorite burritos I can get anywhere. I highly recommend trying it. Tell them to make it spicy. No, this isn't the best burrito place I have ever been to, therefore, it is not 5 stars. That award goes to a little mexican grill in West Hempstead, New York called Gonzos. They cut your burrito in half and sear a layer of cheese in the middle openings to keep the food in (if Eve was tempted with an apple, she would have stood absolutely no chance with this thing). Give Tango Mango a shot. If you find the right one, their burritos can definitely reach levels of crave-worthy-ness. Yes, that should be a word. read more

I have been going to Tango Mango since literally the first day it opened and I'll be the first to admit it has been an inconsistent experience. This place always had relatively good burritos at a decent price but began to gain a reputation for overcharging. If I were to guess, in the nearly ten years that I've been going here with my father, I'm willing to bet they overcharged him about 8 out of 10 times in approximately 100 visits. I wish I were making this up. It was painful to see that they would blatantly overcharge anyone and my dad would fight tooth and nail with the person behind the register every time he was overcharged. He would always say, "I'm willing to pay whatever price they post, but it's more about the principal that they try to scam you". The most recognizable employees are the two main operators of the restaurant: the owner, Shirley, and her underling co-manager named Oscar. To be honest, I always felt like Shirley wasn't as bad as Oscar. That being said, she seemed to become more and more discontent with working there over the years, and it showed. These allegations that Shirley (more commonly referred to as "the lady" in other reviews) is rude to customers and sits on her phone texting are anything but fallacious. As for Oscar, he puts on this front like he's your buddy then blatantly overcharges you every time. From my experience Shirley hasn't been quite as bad as far as overcharging goes, but has been known to do it from time to time nonetheless. Now to the more important part of the review: my most recent experience. I hadn't been to the restaurant in so long that I forgot what the burritos themselves were like so I begged my dad to bring me. He reluctantly did so under the condition that I write this review and be as honest as possible. As we entered I felt a certain nostalgia about the atmosphere which had always been very pleasant despite other complaints. Neither Shirley nor Oscar were there which was VERY relieving to say the least. Very refreshing. There was a line of about twelve people being served fairly quickly all things considered. I ordered the BB supreme which is a twelve inch steamed tortilla with one meat, beans, rice, cheese, salsa, guacamole, and sour cream for the price of $7.50. My dad refused to order anything because he can't justify it from his past experience. When we got to the register I vaguely recognized a long time employee who asked how we were doing as if he knew us from so long ago. This was a great little touch. Then it was time for the moment of truth. The register was punched in for $7.50 and then $8.03 for tax. An absolute miracle which can't be understated. I was very insistent about eating the burrito as soon as possible to be accurate about what is definitively the most important thing about a restaurant: the food itself. The shape and size of it was nice; long and just thick enough unlike the ridiculous square shaped burritos the size of an infant's torso that Qdoba and Chipotle have been known for. The tortilla was really tasty and steamed to perfection. I have to say I've been to many other great burrito places (Los Amigos, Anna's, Boca Grande, El Pelon, Olecito, Boloco) and there's just something about the tortilla that is a cut above the rest for me. The chicken was very tasty and flavorful, with the very rare burnt end sort of piece which I don't mind much unless it's filled with them. I was able to get two kinds of beans, refried and black which is a great combination for both flavor and texture. You have to order "half and half" to make sure they don't overcharge The refrieds in particular were just on the verge of being scorching hot and the contrast of that with the coolness of the guacamole and sour cream makes for a wonderful flavor experience. If I had to pick one thing wrong with the burrito it would be the small size of the portion of guacamole which was coincidentally made up for with a huge serving of sour cream so I don't mind much. Overall, I'd say this was one of the best experiences I've ever had at Tango Mango as far as I can remember. The staff was quick and friendly, the atmosphere was as great as ever, and the burrito was absolutely stellar. I eagerly await the next chance I get to go back so long as my dad will bring me. Excellent burritos, amazing staff, great price, no overcharging and perhaps best of all, no Oscar or Shirley. If you've been turned off by this place in the past I URGE you to give it another chance. read more

Here it was 10:05pm, I worked late and was driving through Newton Centre. I know everything is closed or in the process of closing and I am starving. I immediately pull over when I see a neon sign reading "Burritos&Tacos" at a place called Tango Mango. Even though they were technically closed and cleaning up, I was greated by the owner Shirley with a kind smile and pleasant hello. Reaching for my wallet I realize that I forgot it at home. Shirley noticed me searching for my wallet and said, " Don't worry, you look hungry, its late and you can get me back later. Order what you want". I ordered a carnitas burrito which was delicious and returned the next day to pay for it and get another. I've been back since, the foor is great, fresh and affordable. Is it really all that bad? Well, I reckon so. It's been compared to Anna's, and rightfully so. Like Anna's, no matter what goes in, there's a consistent texture and taste. Rice=beans=tortilla, somehow. Even the hot sauce disappeared in the mush. The guacamole isn't noteworthy and stringently applied. It's entirely possible that my novice taste for Mexican food renders this review wholly useless, but i thought the spicy chicken here was just right. Enough to make you finish your beverage, but not enough to require another. Maybe i went bare-bones, but i got a burrito and a soda for $6.83; i routinely pay more for less food for lunch out at work in Maynard, so that seems pretty good to me. The food's prepared absurdly fast, and the folks who make it are nice. Maybe it's the beans that screw it up. i ditched the beans so maybe i got more room for good stuff. Stupid beans. Anyway, it's not so awesome as to make it a regular choice for me, but it's a good change from my usual diet of chicken mcnuggets, jolt cola, and ellio's pizza. read more

I have been eating at Tango Mango for years. I work in the area and get Lunch or dinner at least once a week, The food is fresh and delicious and the staff is friendly and there is never a wait. I like the fact that I have portion control and I don't have to have a giant burrito if I don't want one. They are miles ahead in taste than the chains ( Chipolte, Qdoba). Super ordinary. I got a burrito and it wasn't anything to write home about. Not better than Boca, not better than Anna's and not better than Chipotle. My wife got the portobello quesadilla. She wasn't too much of a fan either. Place was pretty busy, if it's probably cause there isn't much competition, I think if a Boloco, Anna's, Boca Grande or Chipotle opened down the street they'd probably flop.
