I was surprised at how reasonable and affordable it is to buy genuine leather to sew with. There are small, pre-cut pieces suitable to stamp and color to make your own earrings. I have to say that I always spend more money here than I initially intended. The store is layed out in a way that is it super easy to find exactly what I am looking for. Plus there is always something new that I just have to have. The owner is almost always there and always very freindly and can answer just about any question you may have in regards to leahterworking. In addition, the two girls that work there are both very knowledgeable and always seem happy to be at work and always very helpful. The whole staff has a way of pointing out sale items and specials (and tandy always has sales and specials going on) in a way that is informative and not trying to push things on you. I used to go to a different Tandy store when I lived in another location where the same guy was always working and couldn't seem to be bothered to move himself from behind the counter. Not true at this location. All the folks working at this store are always moving, always helping and always working. the overall selction in the store is good and I very rarely cannot find something I am looking for. My only complaint (and it is a very minor one) is that the classes offered are to me, quite expensive. I will say that I have not taken one yet so the value may be there. I've been a Tandy's Leather costumer for three decades. I moved from Oklahoma four years ago and am just getting started again with my artwork. Today was my first visit to this store. Its layout is much better that the store in Oklahoma City. The sales folks answered all my questions and pointed me to items that saved me a bunch. I've read that their prices are high. If you are just purchasing a few items or a one time purchase, then yep. But if this is your hobby or they are your supplier, then you'll want to become a member. The prices come down with each increased level(I believe there's three). I went ahead and joined today and saved $20 on my first purchase. Google so wisely steered me in the direction of Tandy Leather. Needed to get a new pair of soles for my dance shoes so I was looking for something super awesome to stick to the bottoms. I honestly didn't know what I was looking for, wandering lost around the random cow hides and sheep hides and whatever hides there seemed to be. I'm not a big leather knowledge holder, so you can imagine I was wondering around for some time. Fortunately a kind lady came to the rescue, I told her my dilemma and she steered me in the right direction. What a fantastic place! Diana, Jackie and Dusty were all so incredibly nice and super helpful to me. Jackie in particular taught me so much about different tools, different types of leather and different approaches I could take to carry out my projects. The prices (many items were on sale) were extremely reasonable and I have now attended two of the open workshops they offer on the first and last Saturdays of the month. The prices may have risen since this location opened, but the staff more than make up for it with what I can only describe as top notch service. Employees will walk you right to what you need, or help you decide if you aren't sure, even during very busy times. The store is sensibly organized, and they have BIG front windows so you'll be able to see well the colors you're choosing. Whether you are a serious leather artist, harness and saddle maker, anime fan, steampunk or medieval reenactor, the folks here are conversant with your interest and can assist you. Full of different types of leathers and furs, the women that run the front definitely know their job and make sure to ask if help is needed, the store is clean. Only down fall some of the hides is about the cost of feeding a small army if you need more then one to do a project. read more

I was looked at when I walked in but not acknowledged, the costumer that walked in after me was promptly greeted and assisted by more then one worker.... while I was still being ignored! I wanted to walk out and take my money to Tandy leather in seattle but really needed a tool and was not up for driving from Tacoma to seattle during rush hour so I took the tool to the register and waited to be checked out... I have been coming to this store off and on over the past 7 years and have always been very happy with the service and products here. a few years back the store changed hands and while the old owner/manager was always helpful, friendly and knowledgeable, he just doesn't begin to compare to Diana and the ladies that she has working there now! every time I go into the store I am always greeted with a smile and a positive attitude, and they make sure to check in to see if I am finding everything ok while doing my shopping. Diana is running a great store, I will usually come in a Monday when I do make the trip and each time, she is there and very friendly and when checking out she always asks how my weekend was! extremely good customer service! I could very easily just order the products online and have them shipped to me, but I enjoy going into this store because of how friendly and helpful the staff is when I do. so it is a nice field trip for me to go to the leather store. the ONLY negative thing I have to say is not about this location, but about the Tandy leather company as a whole. It's that they always seem to be phasing out items and equipment only to replace it with something that is pretty much exactly the same but more expensive, and some items they just discontinue all together... the prices can be on the high side, but most of the items are a decent to good quality. I had very good service and the selection is nice. I needed rivets and shears. The only issue was how pricey they were and that process are not displayed. 2 bags of rivets, a riveting tool and the shears cost me 100 bucks. But the quality I got was good. read more

I order from the Tandy Leather Tacoma all the time and the staff is wonderful at filling all my online orders. They have great attention to detail, are very fast on the shipping and very courteous. They are all friendly when I'm in the store and give me my space to shop around. They are very helpful when it comes to selecting leather, they try to pick out the better looking hides for me when I shop online. Of course there are higher quality hardware options than Tandy out there, but it's a great place for beginner's and us experienced leatherworkers to shop for buckles, leather, stitching supplies, dyes, etc. In terms of it being "expensive", leatherworking is an expensive hobby especially when you don't have wholesale discounts. The tools are an investment and leather in general will be expensive especially if you want the nicer quality stuff, no matter where you shop. Tandy has the best priced leather available that I've found, not too many stores are willing to offer so many sales/discounts as they do on a regular basis. read more
