I saw a you tube video suggesting that a leather tag is a nice way to finish a knitted garment or blanket. I found this gem online definitely off the beaten path but well worth the trip from Elk Grove. I had no idea what i was looking for but i was promptly greeted by Zach who showed me two affordable tools to get me started and showwd me the scrap bin which was perfect source of small bits i needed for my tags. I started a Dillion wallet kit but broke my finger and was unable to do the stitching. One of the employees, Zach, was incredibly helpful and stitched the wallet for me on his own time. He even gift wrapped it and gave me a jar of leather conditioner. The customer service is fantastic and the workers really go out of their way to make sure you have the best experience, I recommend this place to everyone! read more

I'm not sure of the associates name, but the name on the receipt is GUNDER M for the cashier. In case Tandy's is reading this, he's the one whom has the spike hair and all of his clothes are either custom or highly altered. He was extremely personable, knowledgeable, and friendly. As someone who has literally zero experience in working with leather(me of course), this associate was a godsend. We just wanted to make some custom belts and the associate looked at the picture of the look we were going for and was like 'yep, this is what you need and how you can do it'. I know leather belts aren't super difficult, but I get anxiety being in a place with so many options. He assisted with picking out the right strap, buckles, rivots, and made sure we had the right tools to get the job done. On top of that, he took some scraps and showed us how to do the work on his table in the back. He could literally point to anything and I would have bought it as I was confident that he wasn't overselling me and wouldn't lead me in the wrong direction. It's an hour drive to the nearest Tandy's and I'd gladly make the trip if I knew this gentleman was there to help. The "remote" Elgin location might be off-putting to some, but if you need leather, hardware, tools, or craft items that you want to try for your scrap-booking, card-making, handy-crafter, motorcycle-aficionado, and leather-fantasy self, and this might be the place to go. In Elgin, but check the map it is really right off the highway. Its in an industrial area and the 'front door' is actually in the back of the building, and even with a GPS device, had to double back to the yellowish brick building the Leather Factory shares with a few other places. Please note their hours on Saturday, they close by 2pm! The selection of items is massive and impressive. The owner/manager couldn't be nicer. I am pretty sure he tried to upsell me on a couple of extra tools, but when I gave him a chance to upsell me on pricier leather-conditioning products, he told me to stick with what I know (Lexol - which I love). I am a little bit of a crafter, so his advice made sense to me. I was actually hoping to get away with using the in-shop tools right then and there, but I am glad I picked up my own because I was able to execute my project in my own time, learning how to use them in my own way. Now that I have made my first small project in leather, I am really looking forward to going to back to Tandy and purchasing more tools and raw materials this weekend! There was a lot of corny keychain, coin pouch, and beaded fringe projects -- If you have kids and need rainy-day projects, they have a multitude of these kits -- and beyond the kits, they really do have a giant selection of tools and hardware / findings. Here's an example: scrap booker? love eyelets? Forget the 6- or 12-pack of eyelets at the fancy paper store. I would come here for the better prices on giant bags of different colors of metal eyelets. Tandy Leather has got some pretty cool stuff here, for kids and adults to try creating something with their hands. With Tandy's help I would completely re-cover a couple of chairs in leather, if only the partner would let me! read more

I own an Etsy shop that sells small leather goods mostly journals and totes. Tandy Leather Factory of Elgin is my go to for most of my leather needs. Speckled Fawns has sold over 10,000 units thus far. I owe much of my success to my suppliers and this shop is where I get 90% of my leather goods. During my interstate travels I have had the opportunity to visit other Tandy stores, many of them have good customer service. None of them compare to the Elgin location. I really feel like part of the Tandy family when I stop in. Each associate calls me by name and is attentive to my needs as soon as I hit the door. Once I cross over the threshold I literally hear a good morning Terri from someone. I've noticed that they treat every single customer big and small like they were the only customer. I attribute this to the great atmosphere that is created by the Manager and it trickles down to all of the staff. Tandy of Elgin will always be my first go to when I am in need of something for my shop. read more
