Visited for breakfast. Took 30 min to get food, and then the owner is spraying for pests while I'm trying to eat the omelet. Asked him to stop. Ugh. The plate was missing hash browns. Oven not working AGAIN so, couldn't get naan roll.... Omelet had veggies and a hint of spice. Hash browns seemed to be from a bag. 'Toast' was grilled. They do have other 'American' food for breakfast, but I wanted something different. I may have to visit the Apex location just for comparison of food. read more

I wanted so badly to love this place. I'm not sure when they opened. They are fairly new, simple twist used to be at this location. This is the closest Indian food to me. But I would rather drive out to Morrisville or Raleigh to get Indian food. I bought chicken tandoori (didn't come with any rice) and the chicken tikka masala. Chicken tikka masala is my go to dish. But I felt like I was eating dessert... it was heavy on the sugar! Never have I tasted it like this. Also the portions are small! The take out rice was what I normally have left over when I eat Indian food. It was almost $40 for my order. The wait was long I waited 50+ mins to order and wait for the food. Service was lacking. There was only one server. I had to wait for 2 tables to order before I could. Every time I would come in to check and see if my food was ready the waitress kept going to the back to wait for food to be ready, and I just wanted to get an idea of how much longer I'd be waiting. And finally when the food was ready as I walked to the car and got in something was dripping from the bottom of the bag. It was poorly packed. The tandoori chicken lemon sauce had soaked and spilled through the paper bag. It burned my hand. I had to take the items out of the bag. read more

Food they had hardly anything to offer less then 1/2 was available including chicken . We asked what kind of fish is offerd and the server said probably cat fish but who knows . Ambiance fly traps everywhere We were the only ones in the restaurant and I completely understand why . Server didn't care about anyone and was wearing slippers . Isn't that's a liability? Iv worked in food service and that was never aloud . They didn't even have sugar to put in the tea . Most of the drinks were not available. Our first trip to Tandoori Trail was phenomenal. I had been craving Indian food for a solid month, but we live in a barren wasteland of bland food, so it only happens when we find ourselves out of town. I had heard about this spot a couple months prior, and I was excited because it would be the closest Indian spot from our home in eastern NC. We found ourselves in Clayton for a baseball game, and I knew we had to stop. The biryani dishes were excellent. I had the lamb and my daughter had the chicken. The wife ordered the tandoori chicken sizzler, and it did not disappoint either. The only complaint I would offer - and it isn't a big complaint - is that I find the spice levels a little lacking. I'm used to spicy Indian food. Pump up the heat levels a bit. All in all, I give Tandoori Trail a solid 4 stars, and we will be back. read more

The "Caesar" Salad not only didn't have Caesar sauce, croutons or cheese, they also added tomatoes & absurdly large chunks of onion, ontop of that they didn't even use romaine lettuce, it was iceberg, the chicken was also overly soft, this was not a Caesar salad AT ALL... Receipt showing I payed 19$ for a vegetarian tiny bowl of undercooked rice & mushy paneer in a Oil tasting substance they call TIKKA MASALA!! It's enough to make someone cry I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone at all, also the first and only other time I went here they put chicken in a dish that was supposed to be VEGETARIAN for my significant other & they put a note in the bottom of the bag saying "we're sorry, ran out of Paneer" when they could've said it to me but tried to send me home with tainted food. It is so nice to actually have a different type of restaurant (especially Indian) than just GMO restaurants like Bojangles and Smithfield Chicken and BBQ. Food was OK, but I shouldn't have to pick out cardamom pods and whole cloves from chicken biriyani. The lunch serving was a little smaller than. I was expecting. Spice level was fine. The chicken was a little undercooked and very pinkish-red close to the bones. Garlic naan was good, but a little light on the garlic for my tastes. Service was adequate, it was not busy so there really wasn't any other tables that needed tending. This place will do if you don't want to travel all the way to Raleigh for Indian food. read more

Really nice experience. We had pakora and Sonora's for appetizers. Very well spiced, we will have both again. I had one of their chicken dishes, shashlik sizzler! I just saw that I had left a glowing review for this restaurant and now I want to correct it. I don't want to steer folks wrong. I have been 4 times. The first experience (which resulted in my first review) was phenomenal... great food, service, etc. I was so happy to have an Indian restaurant in town and it was tasty and lovely! The second time I went, it was passable... not great, but not horrible. The third time was terrible all around and I did not expect to come back. (They had hired a new server and he was awwwwful... didn't understand us or the menu, the food took forever, and it wasn't good.). Last month I was invited to go there with some friends and didn't want to be a debbie downer, so I went... and I'm glad I did. I found out that the horrible server wasn't there any more... we were served by the same person that served us the first time ... he is the Chef/owner's husband and very personable, authentic, and kind. The food was good. I ordered the mixed grill that was supposed to come with 2 different types of chicken (tandori & malai), fish, and momos and I don't think I got the fish... but it was still good. I don't know... it's a mixed bag. I'm on their email list and they are offering 15% off during August and just came out with a lunch special that looks pretty good...so... I'll try again. But I didn't want to be on the hook for leading people astray with my 5-star review from last October. I hope they can get it together... get some good servers and consistency with the food... we really need this restaurant in Smithfield! read more

We went with friends to eat. Two of us ordered the Butter chicken and one of us ordered the lamb dish. And another ordered the Tandoori Trail Sampler. Well they were out of lamb. So ordered another chicken dish. 45 minutes later we received the two butter chicken dishes and the other chicken dish which really was just like the butter chicken. Then we asked about the Tandoori trail. Oh sir we are out of all of your meat for that dish. Might have been good to know 50 minutes ago. He never received his meal. read more

I have loved Indian food for over 25 years! It is by far my favorite type of restaurant and I am always happy to go check a new one whenever I learn about it! So I was super excited to find out one opened about 40 minutes from my house! I usually drive an hour to go get Indian food. I ordered a Samosa before even looking over the menu. No one ever screws those little pastries filled with smashed potatoes and peas. I love them!!! Well... today all that changed!! If I had to use one word to describe my experience at Tandoori Trails in Smithfield it would be TORTURE!!! I WANTED so bad to like this place because the menu was creative and I wanted to go back and try some of the unique dishes I had never heard anyone else do but made sense they could be tasty. Well, I will NOT be finding out! The first bite of the SAMOSA was like I had just bit into a Carolina Reaper or Ghost Pepper! It was spice level 10, and my tastebuds feel like they got 3rd degree burns. The tip of my tongue is still tingling and my tastebuds no longer work. I tried using Riata to ease the pain on my tongue believing it would cool down the filling. I was an idiot and took 2 more tiny bites smaller than a pea drowned in Riata (yogurt condiment used to reduce spicy dishes). Then my food arrived. I had ordered Butter Chicken and Channa Masala. Two dishes that should be safe. I had ordered the butter chicken mild and the Channa as light spice (level 1) to see what the difference would be. Unfortunately, damage was done to my tastebuds. There wasn't much spice in the Butter chicken but still had some. The Channa was like biting a jalapeno. I only managed one bite of each and a bite or two of Garlic Naan. Not sure if the spice was the utensils they used or what, but the heat level was far higher than it should have been for what I ordered. The flavors tasted "off" as well. I am believing this was actual damage done to my tongue and mouth from the initial bite of Samosa. I realized then, this restaurant could charge me the $42 they did because it was the last $42 they ever got from me. I will tell everyone to make the trip to Raleigh! Taj Mahal off Falls of Neuse and Curry House in Wake Forest are both EXCEPTIONALLY good Indian Restaurants. Taj Mahal has had a couple times it was a bit too spicy but NOT like what I went through today. This wasn't just a hint of spice. It was the hottest thing I have ever had in my life. My eyes and nose were running like Niagara Falls!!! Banging my tongue with a hammer would not have hurt as much as that Samosa! Nothing has tasted "right" since that first bite! I can remember biting into an Indian Pepper once upon a time at a restaurant in Atlanta, and it was NOT like this. Don't torment yourself or damage your tastebuds by trying to eat here. You will regret it and be out way too much money! If you find yourself at this restaurant, do yourself a favor and go back to your car and leave. Smithfield has other dining options that will not be as painful. read more

this is the worst indian restaurant i have ever been to. this is the second time we have ordered takeout (i posted a review of that) and honestly we will NOT be giving this location another try. i ordered paneer tikka masala for $18.95, which is RIDICULOUS for a vegetarian dish in my opinion. the dish i received is so far from being worth anywhere near that price. i'm not sure what went wrong, but it's as if the paneer had been overcooked to mush. no flavor, shockingly bland and literally tastes like oil. i can't bring myself to eat it without being repulsed. i wouldn't have minded the texture of the paneer so much if the curry itself at least tasted decent but it's SO oily and bland to where even adding salt didn't help. 18.95 for slop i can't eat. adding insult to injury, the side salad was full of onions to the point where i had to pick half of them out. i love indian food, paneer tikka masala being one of my favorite dishes. i am truly in awe about how badly this dish was executed, literally a waste of $18.
