So...I wanted to tell you guys upfront that I skipped breakfast this morning. When you are starving, food can taste extra good so I'm just letting y'all know I could be slightly biased today, ok? Lol! Anyhow, I decided to check out this food truck because who doesn't like tacos??? When I got there, I tried to check-in, but I couldn't. There were about 3 people ahead of me, but the line moved fast. They have a good size menu to be a food truck so I was kind of worrying it would take me a while to decide what I wanted, but I went with the Cuban Taco (roasted pork shoulder, cilantro mayo, and pico de gallo) and the Club Taco (grilled chicken, bacon, chipotle ranch, chihuahua cheese, and a slice of avocado). I got some of the Mexican hot sauce that was available so I could add some heat to my tacos. Both tacos came to $8.25 so not a bad value in my opinion. I got my food in under 10 minutes and the tacos were a decent size. The Cuban Taco was my favorite of the two, but both were really delicious. I'd definitely visit this food truck again. read more

We were visiting the Birmingham Restaurant Week Food Truck Pop-up Park and decided to try the pork nachos. Let me just say they were incredible!! Topped with a huge heaping of pork, black beans, and grilled vegetables, there were enough toppings to go with every chip, which means, in my book, an excellent plate. We also tried the Mexican corn. I had a certificate that I needed to use like today, O5/09/2020 because this was the last day. Mind you, I've had it for months but anyway. I tried to gift it to others but many are working remote and couldn't use it. Determined not to let it go to waste, I reached out to them via email about their schedule and eventually I received a response and showed up. In order to use all the money, I would have to order the most expensive items on the menu or several less expensive items but I knew I wouldn't eat it all. I was Spirit led to purchase the person's meal that was in line with me and that's what I did! This food truck parks in front of my office building every other Thursday. I have tried a few items but will always go for the Torta Cubana with some garlic cheese fries and sometimes their street corn. I have to say the sandwich is so delicious, the pork is very savory especially with the sauce that is added on it. They toast french bread with butter (similar to the WalMart Bread) Their garlic fries are very popular in my building, I like that the garlic is not overwhelming when eating them but I am not amuse of their smelliness. I do love adding some sriracha sauce on my fries, which give them a nice spiciness to them. The portion is just enough for a lunch meal. Other dishes I have tried are their nachos, which get soggy after a few minutes and different tacos. Normally at any taco truck I like to try out the tacos first, but today for my first visit, I get the steak nachos instead. The serving was HUGE! I tried valiantly, but couldn't finish all the chips, cheese, pico, sour cream, and fresh jalapeños on my plate. I have to say there was a ton of meat on my plate as well. Although he nachos were good, my favorite part of my meal were the garlic fries. Holy amazeballs, these fries were life changing! Have had these guys a few times now. They can be found all over B'ham at events ranging form food truck rallies to local brewery events. They can also be reserved for company functions (not sure what the committed price is for that). When they arrive on site set up is pretty quick and they are usually ready to start taking orders within about 15 minutes. Full compliment of menu items - All sorts of tacos (Steak, chicken, pork, fish, etc) all with their own unique twist. Additionally they have a couple sandwiches as well as nachos. Most recently i had the Cuban and Asada taco. Both were really good and flavorful. Hard to actually pick a favorite because both were done so well. Tacos are filled nicely and when you get two (along with a side) they are quite filling. Interestingly the sides are garlic fires and cheesy garlic fries. I went with the regular garlic fries and they were quite good as well. Once the order was placed my food was ready in less than 5 minutes. These guys are very friendly and know how to process a large volume of customers in a timely manner. If you see the truck around town give them a shot. I always get the Chicken Club sandwich here - it's one of my favorite sandwiches, so it's always a pleasant surprise to see the Cantina food truck around. The prices and portion sizes are nice too, especially for a food truck. The garlic fries tend to be on the softer side, but are pretty good nonetheless. My order was ready in about five minutes, which is a lot faster than expected. Everything was served in a paper bag with a paper tray for the fries, so there was very little trash to carry around with me afterwards. It would be nice if they wrapped my sandwich in something to keep it together; it completely fell apart inside the bag when I tried to pick it up. I don't remember there being any masks or other COVID-19 safety though, which keeps me from being able to give 5 stars for the time being, though I'll update my review if it's different next time I visit. read more

Cantina on wheels is in my opinion one of the best food trucks in Birmingham. Consistently great food, clean truck, and great service. You can't go wrong with anything on their menu, but my favorite entree is the steak nachos. Tortilla chips topped with queso, pico, sour cream and tender steak. If you're like me and like it spicy, ask for jalapeños, also they always have a assortment of hot sauce to pick from. The truck fries are also a staple. Crispy garlic fries topped with similar toppings as the nachos. If you are in the mood for a sandwich, shoot for their Cuban. It's not like a traditional cuban but it definitely doesn't disappoint. I'm a regular at this food truck. The guy knows my order as soon as I walk up. They are always parked outside of Lakeview until the early morning on the weekends so the drunks can get their munchin on. You can find out where else they'll be throughout the week if you follow them on Facebook. You can't go wrong with anything on their menu. I always get their nachos. The asada (steak) nachos are the best! And I ask for extra queso bc who doesn't need more queso? Their fish taco is also one of my favorites. I have only visited this truck once, and this was at the B-Ham food truck rally. Prices were decent, but only the items on the menu is what you get. I had wanted to order my daughter a plain beef taco with lettuce and cheese. The guy said they did not have any.... And that is fine, seeing how this was a rally and they had to prep said ok... So i ordered her the steak nachos.. I figured i would stick with the staple "fish taco". When the order came, pretty quick for the amount of orders they were taking. My daughters steak nachos was nothing more than hamburger with queso dip on the chips.... My daughter liked them, but i thought the meat tasted a little off. I feel like jumping for joy anytime I see this truck near me and make my way over for my beloved fish tacos (which include grilled or breaded & fried fish, slaw, cilantro mayo, and avocado). I'm guilty of eating the same item from Cantina and Cantina On Wheels most of the time I stop by either. However, the tacos are sooooo good I don't feel like my taste buds are missing out on anything else on the menu! In addition to the delicious tacos, the Mexican style street corn (when it's available), garlic fries, and veggie tacos are all killer options. The staff is also always welcoming and the hilarious Big Bang Theory Sheldon tip jar puts a smile on my face with each visit. I typically don't eat from a food truck unless I'm starving, and there is no other option. The Cantina food truck seems to find me when I'm hungry. Once at the Sloss Furnace, once at a Food Truck rally, and this last year at Sloss Fest. The last time I ate here, I was with my friend who is a vegetarian and we shared an order of their nachos. She loved them, but of course I would have liked some meat. The queso and pico were delicious though. As for the tacos, I have tried both their chicken and club taco and liked both of them. I do think at around $4 a taco I would rather just go somewhere like to Bartaco and get a few of those at the same price. read more

This is a great food truck to go to if you ever see it. My favorite item to get is the elotes. It's a Mexican dish, specifically corn with mayonnaise which is topped with a Mexican chili pepper and cotija crumbled cheese. If you've never had one I'd highly recommend it. The service is always quick and friendly. It's all made to-go and placed in plastic carry out bags with plasticware and paper napkins. So good that at first I had only got one & immediately got back in line for a second. The steak nachos were equally as good. Let me be completely honest. I've only had one menu item from this food truck. But I've had that one menu item many times and can definitely say that it is always good. This truck has one of the best fish tacos I've ever had. I mean they are one of those dishes that doesn't seem so spectacular when you read it but somehow becomes one of those crave worthy items. The fish is very lightly battered (I think with just some egg white) and fried. I'm pretty sure it's just tilapia but it's always so moist and tender. This tender crisp fish is nestled in avocado, red cabbage slaw, and cilantro mayo. Like I said, it reads pretty simple and non extraordinary, but it's so good! Every person I've ever had try it has fallen in love with it. It's light and filling and well priced and balanced. I really can't speak for the rest of their dishes. For all I know they could be worthless. But I will continue to be a patron and spread the word of the magical fish tacos that just can't be beat. read more

Recently tried out this food truck at an event in Homewood. I walked away very impressed with their tacos. I'll rate each individual menu item separately. For two people we tried the following: Cuban Taco - 5 stars. Excellent taste prepared well and quickly. Wanted another one of these after I finished it. Asada Taco - 4.5 Stars. Near perfect but not quite as memorable as the Cuban. Fish Taco - 3.5 Stars. This taco came with a huge tilapia portion which was awesome. Normally I'm not super picky but it did seem like they burned the tilapia, but the avocado on top was a great touch. Chicken Taco - 3.5 Stars. Tasty but not outstanding like some of their other taco options. Garlic Fries - 3 Stars. I kind of wish I would have tried the Garlic Cheese Fries. I'm glad I tried these but will probably just stick to ordering tacos in the future. Overall, great quick service and lots of food for a decent price. Can't beat three dollar tacos. They had the most delicious garlic fries and chicken tacos! Really fresh! Crispy, garlicky fries were an interesting substitute for regular chips and salsa! Tacos were freshly made and the meat was tender and juicy! Will definitely pick up food from here next time they are in our area! read more

I eat here almost weekly, even when I tell myself I'm going to save the money. My favorites are the fish tacos, Mexican corn, and the garlic cheese fries. It can get a bit pricey, depending on how much you decide to order, but the portions are great. I highly suggest giving them a try. This is The Best Mexican food truck I've ever had. I've been here many time when they park at UAB. The Club Tacos are amazing and the best item on the menu. The tacos come with fresh grilled chicken, fresh avocado slices (not that fake avocado paste at some places), a strip of bacon, cheese and a special sauce that just adds that delightful end note to the taco. Was denied use of the $25 gift card two DIFFERENT times. The employee said I can only use the gift card at lunch. What???? Where does it say that on the gift card site? Then she changed her mind and said that I need to bring the printed version of the gift card when the app site says you can use the mobile version at a later time. Tried to show and explain to the employee that the website shows that I can use the mobile app and all they said was to "call the owner." I have to call the OWNER of the restaurant to redeem my gift card? What kind of business does this? And the website says that the gift cards "never expire" but I had an expiration date on the instagift app. Would not recommend. read more

Two words: Cuban taco. And veggie taco. And chicken taco. And black bean taco... Okay, that last one was three, but one thing is consistent across the list: they're all delicious! The Cuban was the best in my opinion - the pork and the sauce work great together, and the pickles add a good crunch to the mix. At the Street Food Rally at Workplay and then again at Party on the Porch at Alabama Outdoors in Homewood, Cantina brought the flavor and flair to the party. Average tacos that your non-Hispanic mother could do. The Cuban taco was on Flour tortillas (not grilled) with average meat. The Mexican street corn was average. Needed a decent char on the kernels and the spice needs to be bumped up just a tad bit. Overall not bad but I suspect the majority of the profits do not come from Die Hard Mexican fans.
