I have memories of having fabulous meals at Taki's. I read the recent Yelp reviews in advance, and thought "no, that can't be true." I'm sorry to say that during a recent trip to Vancouver, Taki's disappointed. The Greek platter looked beautiful but honestly the quality and flavor just wasn't there. The chicken souvlaki was dry, the potatoes undercooked and less lemony, the salad needed more feta, the moussaka was a sloppy mess... Some years back Taki's was a premier place for Greek food in Vancouver. My heart's a little broken... It's still a cute space and fun to sit in the front window and people watch on Davie. read more

We felt like some Greek food and found Taki's Tavern on Davie St. My husband had the Kleftiko( roast lamb shoulder) and he said it was ok. I ordered the Beef moussaka. It tasted quite gamy, must have used some ground lamb+beef. Bechamel sauce on Mashed potato cap not much taste. There's also minty sliced carrots, oregano potatoes and rice pilaf. We also shared the fried calamari appe. Quite a bit of food on the plate for both dinners as you can see in the pics. Reasonable prices and wait staff carries a smile constantly. Not sure exactly what to say here. The restaurant has been in my neighborhood for many years. And was usually very good, but that's not the case, anymore. We were seated quickly, as we were the only customers in the restaurant. Service was okay. I'll cut them some slack as the waitress was training The atmosphere was good clean, and comfy, The real issue was the food. I ordered chicken parmesan with spaghetti bolognese. The cutlets were so overdone that they were dry and tough & they were very lightly sprinkled (I do mean very lightly) with Kraft parmesan cheese. The meal was flavorless. I mentioned it to the waitressbur my comment was ignored. My partner's order was just as dismal. He ordered Mousaka which was very overcooked. It was extremely dry and burnt in places. The ceaser salad was extremely skimpy very very small I do not mind spending money going out to eat if I get a decent-sized meal, cooked properly, and a meal that is not lacking in flavor. Ordered 2 lamb souvlaki. Meat ok but the rice and potatoes were at least days old. The tzatziki sauce tasted funny. It tasted like some milk powder mixed into it. Very disappointing. I remembered Takis had much better food years ago. read more

I had the lamb shank. It was tender and I enjoyed it, even though it seemed over salted. The potatoes, rice, and carrots were good, but they were just warm. Some of the worst Greek food I've eaten. Nothing was made fresh. We placed our food order which arrived at the table in less than 5 minutes indicating it was only warmed up and reheated. While most other restaurants were packed on a Saturday night, we easily got reservations on OpenTable. When we arrived at the restaurant the place had only three tables occupied. One was a group of 10 celebrating a birthday. There were two wait staff and one was slowly decorating a Christmas tree at the door. When we walked in she looked at us and did not come to great us. She waited for the other waitress to seat us. Bizarre. Things went further downhill from there. This one nice waitress was running around serving all tables and taking care of delivery driver orders while the other waitress just continued to slowly decorate the tree in the middle of dinner service. I commend the one waitress for doing her best. We ordered the calamari deep fried, the shrimp souvlaki dinner and the lamb shoulder. Pita bread was one of the highlights. Pillowy soft and warm. Calamari was another highlight. Flavourful and crisp with a great tsitziki. Entrees were well portioned, but not great. Potatoes were undercooked, rice was lukewarm and the lamb although was tender was also lukewarm and lacked depth of flavour. The shrimp was ok, we expected shrimp on skewers grilled like souvlaki but instead came in a small bowl. Prices were reasonable so I will give them that. Amazing food 4 months ago. Now barely edible. The portions were no longer ample but the preparation was what one would expect of a zookeeper in a monkey cage so larger portions would not help. Vastly overpriced skewers of lamb were also vastly overcooked. The platters of meat mussaka were slopped in the container like at a school cafeteria. Tried the Greek Platter dinner for two and we were completely satisfied with dinner and enough leftovers for another meal for both of us. Cute atmosphere and almost romantic with the old world decor. The service was friendly and not obtrusive. Food was really good - typical Greek fare well done. Not so big Greek restaurant in the heart of Davie street in downtown Vancouver where food competition is high and tough. Parking is not free if ever your lucky there will be one or two free but far. Pretty busy when we got in but we had a table not even 5 minutes, good timing. Free warm bread and a spread for the start and you can ask for more if you wishes too. Service is average but not slow. The door stays open and you freeze till someone has to get up to close it . The mens bathroom is a total illegal washroom. We had ordered from this place about 6 months ago and were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food. We just ordered again last night and were so disappointed. The roast lamb shoulder was mostly fat and bones. The dolmathakia were falling apart as they were only wrapped with one leaf and the sauce was barely there, I don't think there was any beef in them either. The roast potatoes were not roasted and barely cooked. The grilled calamari was rubbery and seemed to have sand?, although they seemed to be prepared properly. The keftethakia were bland and they were so stingy with the appetizer hummus and tatziki. I don't know if they have changed management or what but if they want to keep competing with Stephos, they need to bring back quality. Cozy spot that isn't really that busy (at lunch) ever. My assumption as to why they are not busy at lunch is because the food takes a while to get from the kitchen to your table, I'm talking like twenty five minutes, minimum. So if you have the time to wait, you will in fact be rewarded with honest, clean and tasty food. The lunch menu has some specials that are seriously good. If you have never tried Taramosalata, do yourself the favour and eat it here. Bear with me (is this the correct homophone?!?!?) here, this delicious item is Fish Roe Pate, which might sound odd but its hella good. That lunch menu I mentioned has a deal where you get to choose two dips to inhale with Pita Bread, try the Eggplant as your second choice. Quality Souvlaki in Pita plates as well; large portions, seemingly fresh to order (hence the wait?) in one of the softest Pitas you will ever eat. The sides are Rice Pilaf, Greek Roast Potato, Veg and a Greek Salad. This is the best deal, hands down. The décor of this restaurant is unfortunately stuck on some eighties Mediterranean nightmare, complete with brick archways painted institutional white. The bench seating also has these awful pillows that really no one wants to touch. I honestly can't even imagine WTF could be on them. A serious modern update would do this establishment proper. I just got takeout so I'll be mostly reviewing the quality of food alone as I can't say much about the interior or service, although I will say that the woman who gave me my food was very nice. I got the Spanakopita Dinner, and initially I was a bit skeptical about paying $21 for it, but when I saw how much food it was the price made sense. All of the food had a fresh taste, and the spanakopita was really nicely textured. I'm generally not a fan of tomatoes but I had no problem eating the large pieces of tomato in the Greek salad because it went so naturally with the other flavours. Wow. Every single item was absurdly overcooked which was a shame, because there were creative herb and spice combinations. It's possible everything is cooked early in the day and held in steam tables all day. Chicken Athena was dry as dust. Breast was inedible. Seafood platter - salmon was chalky. Shrimp were rubber. Oddly the scallops (which were frozen - not fresh) seemed to have been microwaved and were cold and uncooked in the center. Even the spanicopita was over cooked - filo was burned. I've been a West End resident for roughly 25 years. I absolutely love my neighbourhood and couldn't imagine living anywhere else. Takis has been a wonderful mainstay in our neighbourhood for as long as I can remember. Yesterday, I picked my Mom up from her home in Tsawwassen to bring her into the city to stay with my partner and me over Christmas. Also in our group is my brother who is visiting from New York. As their West End "host", it made me proud to take them to Takis where we had absolutely delicious meals and wonderful service from our server, Dee. Dee was excellent. We were in the neighbourhood and looked for Greek food for dinner. We came here, because the rating was quite high and we had high expectation. We got here around 6pm. The restaurant was not too busy. A server gave us a table right away. We ordered hummus and pita bread as well as calamari as the appetizers. The calamari was delicious, but it was quite greasy. The oil was sitting at the bottom of the dish. We had better calamari somewhere else that the calamari was crispy and dry that we could not see the oil. We ordered the lamb souvlaki (big and small). The lamb was very salty. We were very thirsty after dinner. We had better Greek food somewhere else. As a result, we would rate this restaurant 3-3.5 out of 5. Beside the food, the customer service was great and the interior design was quite authentic with Greek design. We may try Greek food somewhere else, but not here next time. read more

Having Stepho's down the street means that there is some serious competition for this cute little Greek spot. But it doesn't mean that Takis isn't putting up a fight. I came here with a group for Vancouver's first International Supper Club, and had a lovely dining experience. Their menu consists of your typical Greek fare: souvlakis, seafood, and the various meat platters. We ordered the hummus and pita for the table and for my entree, I decided on the calamari dinner platter. The calamari was delicious! Perfectly crispy, and just the right amount of flavour. They also gave a generous amount tzatziki sauce to go with the calamari, which I appreciated since I like my fair share of tzatziki. It goes without saying that you never leave a Greek restaurant hungry, and that is definitely the case for Takis. If you want something different than the classic Stepho's, come here. As many who venture along Davie Street seeking Greek food, Stepho's is the choice by default, but thanks to Yelp Vancouver's first International Supper Club event, I was able to give Takis Taverna a try. I ordered the TAKIS' SEAFOOD PLATTER which includes the atypical appetizer Greek Salad, Salmon Souvlaki, Garlic Prawns, Calamari, rice pilaf, roasted potatoes. They didn't have the Clams and Mussels which was a bummer, but they substituted in Shrimp & Scallops skewers. The taste is Canadianized particularly with the Salmon souvlaki option but overall good nonetheless. Portions are filling, but I never left a Greek restaurant hungry... ever. I give this place an overall 3.5 stars, but enjoyed the company and the attentive service. read more

My husband and I decided to order from a place we've never tried before and sadly we should have stuck to our regular place. I ordered the calamari dinner and my husband the lamb shank dinner. My order came with rice, potatoes, greek salad, and carrots. His order came with rice, potatoes, greek salad, carrots, and lamb. We were both missing tzatziki and I was missing the calamari. I have never ever had a restaurant completely forget the main protein of my meal before. I called the restaurant and after a few minutes of trying to figure out what our order was the person on the phone repeated the wrong phone number over and over and then gave us the option of coming back to the restaurant to pick up the calamari that was forgotten. I declined the offer because we were already home. The rice was bland, the carrots were salty, the potatoes undercooked, and the greek salad was the best part of my meal. The lamb my husband got was tender and flavourful. I would not eat or order from here again, especially with the delicious and authentic greek restaurants Vancouver does have to offer. read more
