I had the omasake experience here and it was amazing. If you're a sushi lover, I highly recommend you to do the omasake. We were seated at the bar right in front of chef Taka himself. It came with an appetizer, 10 plus pieces of sushi, miso soup, and dessert. I was so full. This personalized experience was one of a kind. I will definitely be back. Everything was fresh and unique. People did tend to rush and sit at the bar when the restaurant had opened. But it's big enough for large groups as well.

Really fresh delicious high quality sushi at a reasonable price. It's pretty small inside so not great for large groups of more than 6 I would say. Our server was friendly and attentive. My husband and I came for dinner on a Friday night and were seated immediately. Very fast service. We were in and out in an hour.

Omakase sushi was delicious and filling. I was seated at the bar with Chef Taka himself! My favorite was the SD uni, so plump and juicy. I could barely make it to the end, I was stuffed! Everyone was extremely attentive. I LOVE that there were hangers for your bag under the bar. There is outdoor seating, but keep in mind street smells (exhaust, sewage, smokers) that might ruin the taste.

Always the best!!! We Always come back here for their oysters shots, it's the best! Thanks TAka especially to Mario, he's great!

Visiting from out of town for work, and this place was easily the highlight of my trip to San Diego. The nigiri was exceptional, so fresh and beautifully prepared. You can truly taste the quality. Highly recommend if you're looking for outstanding sushi. Toro, golden eye snapper, cod, yellowtail belly, must try. Thank you!

What a great restaurant. I came here on a Friday night with my parents and was pleasantly surprised by the interior. They do leave the door open, so bring a jacket. There is a sushi bar and tables, as well as an outdoor patio where you can sit. Now let's talk about the food, especially the fish. They brought out mini soft shell crabs as a starter, which were like little crunchy snacks. It was something new for me, and I really enjoyed trying them. We ordered salmon nigiri and golden eye snapper nigiri with yuzu sauce, and both were melt in your mouth delicious and full of flavor. For rolls, we had the negi toro roll with fatty tuna and green onion, which was amazing. The fish was buttery and the green onion added the perfect balance. We also ordered the salmon skin roll and the spicy scallop roll, and both were delicious as well. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully prepared. I would definitely come back.

This is a nice place to get some delicious and fresh sushi. They offer different options to cater to many tastes. We were here for a company convention and a group of us decided to check this place out. Service was friendly and the environment was good!

So I was back for the second time in a week. I can't praise this spot more. I love the service, the vibe, and the food. I get treated like family every time I go no matter how long it's been since my last visit. I missed it up this go round and tried some new nigiri, which were amazing, but my got to(salmon) will remain my favorite. The best sushi restaurant I've tried in SD hands down.

Great and friendly service at this gaslamp gem! Outdoor seating, makes it pup friendly if you have your furry in tow. Tasty Sushi and the chicken fried rice was REALLY good!

    Chef Taka

Wow. I can not even put into words how incredible this food experience was. We sat at the counter and had chef Taka serve us. Individually ordering nigiri one type at a time. I am in another world with how flavorful this sushi is. Even simple fish and rice nigiri is blowing my mind. You have to come here if you are a sushi fan or a foodie. You have to try the Golden Eye Snapper. It's on a whole other level.

fish bone in black miso cod

This was a tender miso black cod, but the bones found inside gives me the impression that there is little care and attention to the preparation of the fish. Use a fish bone tweezer!

Finally got to try this cute Japanese cafe we saw on TikTok, and it did not disappoint!…read more Service: [5/5] The two girls who helped us were so sweet and made the whole experience. We were seated at the bar, which ended up being such a vibe--we got to chat with the girl behind the bar and watch her make lattes and desserts right in front of us. That kind of interaction really sets this place apart. Price: [4.5/5] It's on the pricier side, but honestly it feels fair given the quality of food you're getting. You can taste where your money is going. Food/Drinks: [5/5] Matcha Latte -- We shared one, extra sweet at my request, and it was perfect. Exactly what I was hoping for. Chef Soichi's Karaage -- We had this as an appetizer and my boyfriend made a point to say this is the closest he's had to traditional Japanese karaage. High praise from someone who's passionate about his Japanese culture. Hayashi Omurice -- This is their most popular dish and it's easy to see why. The demi-glaze has a really unique flavor that ties the whole dish together beautifully. This was my pick and I'd order it again without hesitation. Guratan -- My boyfriend's order, and it was incredibly creamy and delicious. We were both too stuffed for dessert by the end, which says a lot about the portion sizes. Ambience: [5/5] The restaurant is small, but honestly that's part of what makes it so charming. Pink everywhere with wooden accents and cherry blossoms throughout (very fitting)--it's cozy, homey, and just really well put together. The intimate size adds to the appeal rather than taking away from it. Overall Experience: [5/5] Hatsuzakara was such a wonderful first experience. Yes, we waited about 30 minutes to be seated arriving at 7:30 on a Friday night but for a waitlist-only spot this small, that's actually a pretty reasonable wait by San Diego standards. The food, the atmosphere, and the staff more than made up for it. Already looking forward to coming back to try the curry and work through their dessert menu.

I feel like everything looked really good, so it was hard to decide what to order. The dishes have small portion size despite the price. I think this kinda helps in that you have room to eat dessert! The brown sugar Okinawa tea was good but the after taste of the sugar was not good. They kept the tea pot warm, and they served oat milk on the side. Karaage had too much chicken skin for my preference. Guratan was penne pasta and not macaroni as specified in the menu. Yakisoba could have used more chicken. Omurice had the more flavor and the egg was really good. I want to try naporitan next time because of the tomato based sauce. Of the desserts I tried, the parfait was most enjoyable because of the fruit with ice cream. The mushi pudding was good; it was the thick and "hard" type of flan. I want to try kakigori next time because I saw their shaved ice machine was legit. Parking - free street parking only. Be prepared to walk up/downhill. Credit card/apple pay accepted Bathroom is only one room in the back. THE SEAT IS WARM. This was a nice gem to find in this part of town.

The Creamy Mentai Udon is a must-try: rich creamy flavor, savory pollock roe with no fishy taste, and perfectly chewy noodles that are absolutely addictive. Their grilled beef tongue is cooked to perfection--tender, juicy, and well-balanced in salt and sweetness. The teppanyaki is also very flavorful. Price range is mid to high, around $40+ per person.
