Visited Taj on a Saturday afternoon, the ambiance is nice. There is a dining room option, couches, bar and outdoor seating. I had a veggie option and my guest had meat. The veggie was okay.Unfortunately, the meat had an odor and a funky taste. I eat Indian food often and even traveled to India and immediately we were aware the meat could not be consumed. Are they a Mexican or Indian or American? Super confused. Dothan had a legitimate Indian option, but were run out by the locals. IF YOU ARE NOT A LOCAL, DO NOT EAT THIS CRAP. Better off driving to P.C. to get real Indian food if thats your craving. I would rate this a 0 star if it was available. Do yourself a favor and just walk over to McAllisters deli instead. Just go ahead and put your diet on hold for an evening. This establishment is well worth the small cheat. The staff go to great lengths to ensure authenticity and amazing flavor, no matter which dish you choose. The decor is nice, there's a small market in the restaurant that offers some of their dry goods to purchase. There is a gynormous (yes, it's a word) TV in the back sitting area/ bar. Cushy chairs and so forth. If none are available, the staff will let you know when a table comes available back there. To reiterate, the staff are extremely helpful, and will patiently explain the various aspects of the food. The menu is ENORMOUS. You'll spend all your time deliberating, but no matter what you go with, you'll be very pleased. read more

We ordered two Indian dishes and two gyros. One of the Indian dishes came out crazy hot because the waitress' 0 looked like an 8 on our order for spiciness. That was fixed and they gave us a replacement. I enjoyed our chickpea masala but for the price I expected a bit more. The gyros were okay. They tasted like philly cheese steaks. We've had better. The restaurant was dark and dreary where we were seated. But lastly, we were charged for our waters! It wasn't even bottled. Totally surprised. read more

Being from Dothan, I have had the pleasure of eating here many times. It was actually the first Indian food I ever had, before moving to Atlanta. I love their chicken tikka masala, it is my go-to. The sauce is creamy, the chicken is cooked perfectly, and like all of the curry dishes you can choose your level of spice. I also always order the garlic naan, which is a delicious oven-baked flatbread. This time I tried the yellow cheese naan (not knowing there is also a feta cheese naan I will definitely be needing to try in the near future), and it was very good as well. Per my family, the lamb malai methi, the chicken saagwala curry, and the chicken karahi curry are also delicious (and from my own taste testing I would agree!). A majority of the time we order take-out, so I can't totally speak for the service (though I've never had a problem), but the food is always excellent. Definitely a must try! read more

Great service I stopped at this place enroute Atlanta from Panama City. Really wanted to eat Indian food and was surprised to find this nestled at the right time we started getting hungry. Great Indian-Greek fusion restaurant! We got the baba ganoush with garlic Naan bread as a starter, which turned out to be a unique combination of Greek and Indian flavors. We also tried their Chicken Tikka Masala and Butter Chicken, which was very flavorful, and we could customize our spice level from 1-10. Our waiter Dwayne was also very helpful and responsive. Decided to place an order to go so that I could bring the food home and watch all of the football games with my buddies, so we called our order in ahead and they told us it would take about 20 minutes. Got to the restaurant, and was very pleasantly surprised to see the welcoming interior and the great bar/lounge area in the back with an area for group parties and plenty of TVs to watch the games at. The restaurant ambience and environment itself is the only reason I was able to give a 2. Guests have commented on the Indian food, but I have yet to see any comments about the "Greek" food, and probably for good reason. I have lived in Chicago, Omaha, Atlanta, and now have recently moved to Dothan --I ordered the gyro and I have to say that BY FAR this is the worst gyro I've ever had I'm my life. I'm not sure I can even call it a gyro. I was already skeptical when they asked me on the phone what level of spiciness I preferred--this had never been an option for any gyro I've had as gyros are not meant to be spicy. When I opened the box containing my meal, there was more oil on the outside of the pita than there was beer in the unopened bottle in front of me. I opened the pita to see see soggy meat in a pool of onions and green peppers, and the most watery tzatziki sauce I've ever seen in a plastic cup. The lamb was everything short of the what you'd see in a "real" gyro. After tasting the "gyro" I concluded this was another name for an Indian-style Chipotle burrito. I was thoroughly disappointed and will not try anymore "Greek" food from this restaurant again. I was extremely skeptical when the sign said Indian, Greek, and BBQ--these 3 restaurant genres were never meant to be under one roof. I'm sure the Indian food tastes great and should've listened to the reviews. But just remember, this is an Indian restaurant, no matter what the sign says on the building. read more

The name for this restaurant "Taj International" caught my eye as I was looking for a non-chain restaurant for lunch while on a long driving trip. The exterior was not flashy, but I went in and was greeted quickly. I had a choice of the buffet or off the menu. I went with the menu, although the buffet was cheaper, to just try one item. There were many choices of Indian and other countries' options. I had chicken curry with cashews. I passed on the bread and had it on rice. The chicken and curry sauce were perfectly cooked. This is my favorite place in all of Dothan. The tika masala curry is fantastic. I go with the lamb. But the Chicken and shrimp and great too. The naan is also really good. I've tried every flavor on the menu and they are all good. They even let you do combos of flavors. Then for the main dish the kababs are fantastic. The short story is that Taj was 'different'. Smells really set the stage for a good meal. I admittedly did not like the smell of the small lobby area nor the rest of the restaurant. This automatically dropped my star score down to a 2. Our server was extremely pleasant and treated us well. He is the reason why there is a star and a review. We ordered the appetizer sampler. My palette was not ready for the dry lamb sausage, odd chicken squares, grape leaves with mushy rice, and tempura vegetables. I've eaten Indian before and for me, this was a hard no. Actually, the plain naan bread was pretty good. So was the garlic naan. Everything else was pretty rough. I read all of the reviews before heading over to Taj and was convinced that this would be a mind blowing meal. It was more of an brain explosion. I wanted to like Taj so badly. Absolutely wonderful from top to bottom. Our waiter could tell we were new to Indian food, so he gave us a free appetizer and suggested we save our naan for the meal. My wife had a sweet chicken curry that was phenomenal, while I went for a more savory and spicy shrimp curry. Great choices. Great service. No matter what you order, you still taste curry. If you happen to enjoy curry, that's fine, but I do not. Especially in a gyro, which is supposed to be Mediterranean. The bar service is also horrible. They do have the drink prices on the menu, which is nice, but they charge $8 a glass for Yuengling Black&Tan, a domestic, non-craft beer. I ordered a Stella Artois that came in a standard, room temperature pint glass. Waiter wasn't able to tell me what all they had on tap. Will not be going to this restaurant again. read more

I eat at Taj every time I come to Dothan for business and I haven't been disappointed yet. It's a tad overpriced and perhaps a bit inauthentic--hence the 4 stars and not 5. That said, I've always stuck with the Indian food on their menu and I've always loved it. The service is fantastic in my experience. I recommend everyone give this a try. Excellent food! Checked Yelp on our way thru Dothan and was immediately excited about the reviews for Taj. We love Indian food and we were not let down! Beautiful decor on the inside and the Indian music set the atmosphere. We had the buffet and it was delicious! I had the Chicken Tiki Masala and a pomegranate martini. The staff was very courteous and even took the time to explain their religious decor items (Goddess Shiva) to us when we were taken by how beautiful it was. We were traveling thru, but the next time I go through Dothan I will stop at Taj again! Five stars! read more
