My friend treated me to lunch there. It's was great! First of all, it's in a shopping center and there's tons of parking. Easy peasy! My friend did the ordering....one fish dish and one beef dish. Loved 'em both! We also had some soup and I was lucky enough to get the chicken foot! Never had one before it wasn't bad. Kinda like eating a hunk of fat, but not in a bad way. The portions were generous so I had some really nice leftovers to eat over the next couple of days. The service was pleasant and efficient. Great place for lunch...probably great for dinner too! I'd certainly go back if I were in the area.

Chicken black mushroom claypot
Linh Y.

My brothers treated me to lunch for my birthday couple months back. Thank you Bros for the nice treat! They chose Taipan Kitchen (TH) which used to be a restaurant my Dad would visit often with his friends. It was the go-to spot for claypots back in the days. We wanted to see if it is still the go-to spot LOL... Anyway, my Mom and I were running late from the doctors office. By the time we got here, most of the dishes ordered were eaten LOL except for our chicken black mushroom claypots. Hence, I don't have pictures of the other dishes except for the latter and that's okay. The chicken black mushroom claypot was delicious. Lots of chicken, mushrooms, and Chinese sausages. Claypot was big compared to other claypots that I have seen at other restaurants. It had good soy sauce flavoring which makes a difference. The key is to pour the soy sauce into the claypot when it's hot so that the rice soaks up the sauce really good... it will carmelize and make the rice crispy. So yummy! The chicken melon soup was very good, too... lots of flavor. I was informed we didn't miss much on the chicken wings that were eaten up earlier LOL. Staff was friendly and helpful. Very attentive to us. Thank you! Prices were average. Atmosphere was okay. There was a group of gentlemen at one of the other tables just chilling and having a grand old time... it reminded me of my Dad and his friends back in the days. I know my Dad was there with us in spirit... miss you Dad! If you're looking for some great tasting claypots and you happen to be in the Hacienda Heights area, give TH a try! Happy Claypot'ing! P.S. Before leaving this joint, we noticed some Chinese sticky rice were displayed at a neighboring table. They were up for sale. We bought one and tried it right there and then in hopes they were good so we can buy all of them. Well, sticky rice was not sticky... it was dry and flavor was not that great... so no cigar on a future sale LOL. Verdict: TH is still the go-to claypot spot at least for now until another claypot restaurant comes through and beats it! =)

House Special Chow Mein

Rating 3 stars comprised of 5 stars for the food and 2 stars for the service. I was craving Claypot Rice and willing to make some effort reaching this place which is over 30 miles away. Restaurant was empty, most people order food to go. Since I order Claypot, I considered to dine in there because it is enjoyable eating in Claypot Dish as well I ordered Chow Mein which worth to try when visiting this place. Authentic and not disappointed taste at all. There was only 1 man did the service, speak a little bit rude when taking order and what surprising us, He threw the menu book to the table near us once he finished taking order. As well when He served us the food, he kind of putting the plate on table with not quite pleasant way. So my advise, not to expect the good service from this place yet you definitely get real deal great taste!

Clay Pot Rice: 4/5 Overall: 4/5 Admittedly, I've made many decisions in my life that I definitely regret. However, one thing I've never regrettted, is always ordering the clay pot rice here. This dish has nice contrasting textures of crunchy rice (from being a little burnt from the hot clay pot) and tender and savory preserved meat, which always provides a fun consistency party in my mouth. The fresh pieces of gai Lan that are gently placed atop allow me to pretend for two seconds that my meal is healthy, before I slosh heavy amounts of soy sauce onto it and indulge in a high cholesterol meal (sorry arteries) Overall, I can only vouch for the clay pot rice, if you pick something else, that may be a decision that you will regret. Delicious and authentic food. Service could be improved, but overall good experience.

Special lunch menu

Greasy table, taped up sofa chair, very stereotypical matter of fact but not rude cantonese service. Honest waiter, gave a serious thought to contemplate if a dish can not have MSG added when I asked. I appreciate the candid reply saying no, since they're prepped into the sauce. Took a long time to find 2 items on the menu that can opt for without: $8.95 string beans dish 3.5 Star and $14.95 clam dish 4 Star. Clam tastes fresh, string beans were great. But I had wanted some meat and soup before stepping in. Had to forgo it since it's not non-MSG possible. True flavors of dishes surface without MSG. So, this place is decent and average for those who likes MSG. But for anti-MSG people, don't bother coming in. You can't find much to order. Can't discount them though, the 2 dishes I ordered were good and had a homemade taste. Can't rate this higher than a 3 since I can't return regularly when 95% of the items are banned from me. Waiters were busy, but not rude leaning towards the nice side. Very human-like, the Hong Kong/Cantonese style. Guess you'll call that authentic. The type that must have their MSG as part of the flavor.

Egg drop soup

Typical chinese restaurant , in the heart of little chinatown not in Los Angeles. No glitz, no glam, down to earth chinese food. Service is fast but cold or not personable. But like any other asian place, once you start talking to them, especially in their language, they open right up and become a lot nicer and friendly. We were quickly seated, and for a late lunch it was busier than I thought it would be. Then again chinese people do love eating no matter the time!!! But service was quick, borderline like they were rushing you out to open up another table. We ordered their chinese sausage in a clay pot with rice, egg drop soup, fried soft shell crab and pan fried chives pocket. Food came out all in like 10 minutes!!! Food was just so so, again no frills, not fancy, but some of them also lacked flavor or salt. Fried soft shell crab was really good though. Well seasoned. Crunchy. Oozy inside. Very good, wish it was more than just 2 crabs. Egg drop soup- was so so. Wish it was more gelatinous or concentrated. It was way to watered down. Chives pockets were seasoned well. Tasted pretty good. Their assorted preserved meat clay pit was a huge disappointment. Basically white rice that they add soy sauce to and mix. Wasen't impressed at all. Several pieces of various meats including chinese sausage, red meat, etc. It was very underwhelming. For 4 dishes though split amongst 3 adults the total bill with tip came out to about $50ish dollars which isnt too bad. But being in the heart of Rowland Heights where theres more chinese restaurants than starbucks or any other food establishments for that matter, this place really needs to step up their game. They have fast service and it's cheap, food came out piping hot, that you're sweating half way thru your meal, but so are all the other chinese restaurants in the area. Really got to step it up...

Seafood Tofu Clay Pot
Hello K.

Ordered the Seafood clay pot with tofu and paid $14.80 with tax and received not even 3/4 of a container. There was barely any food in it. Totally not worth the amount paid and obviously will not be returning.

A three star. The upside is Tapan offered the clay pot rice which cannot be matched. The clay pot rice is a 4 star.

I really enjoyed the dinner I had, they offer lots of options, from freshly made buns, dumplings to fresh seafood. The menu is pretty extensive and they also offer cooked dishes from the kitchen. The staff are very helpful and friendly. They made sure we get the best experience as it was our first time dining at this place. We had the big eye fish as they called it and they steamed it at the other empty table because our buns and dumplings were steaming at the same time to save time. They finish the fish at the kitchen with the hot oil and sauce. We also had the pork and shrimp buns, and beef dumplings. They were delicious! You can make your sauce at the station too and they provide good options. We also got the baby oysters appetizer that was soaking in some sort of light soy sauce marinade. Also got the soft shell crab and you get 3 whole crabs for $10! It was so worth it! The whole restaurant looked clean and inviting. The booths were spacious. I would definitely come back here and try other dishes!

We waited 10 minutes to be acknowledged and that was after walking through the restaurant and back to the front. We watched the staff and manager non-efficiently walk back and forth from the main dining room to the small private room in the front. I felt INVISIBLE. The restaurant had plenty of empty tables but some hadn't been cleaned. We were finally seated with tea and menus but still didn't feel welcomed. We had to flag someone down to take our order which was on marked on the paper form. Then we had to flag someone else down to order a beer and several times to refill the teapot with water. One teapot, 5 people, it's going to empty fast. We had to ask for the bill TWICE and it wasn't busy at all by that time. We ordered 12 dishes between the 5 of us. Most were not very tasty at all but I must admit that the duck, the turnip cake, the fried pork mochi dumplings, and the sticky rice were excellent. Again, it was super annoying to have to wave your hands in the air to get anyone's attention from the beginning to the end of our lunch.

The food here is mediocre at best and the service is just awful. They make you feel like a burden and inconvenience right from the bat and refuse to acknowledge you. We were ordering with a waitress then she suddenly got frustrated when we tried to order the honey walnut shrimp and threw her hands in the air and called someone else over. The tall Asian guy who took our orders also made us seem like an inconvenience and even walked away in the middle of us ordering. He kept this same attitude throughout the whole time. My parents were excited for the 99 cent chicken deal they had and wanted to order more and the same guy refused to acknowledge their questions and ultimately told us it was 1 order per table. This is fine if that's their policy, but it was the way he was acting. He made us feel that we were cheap and stingy wanting to take advantage or get cheap eats. If you don't want people to order this cheap dish, don't have it on your menu or advertise it! Also, we ordered plenty of other foods. Beware because this place seems like they're scammy. I ordered a pot of rice and apparently they charge rice per person so regardless of how many people you have, you still get the same pot of rice but more expensive. This makes no sense even when I questioned them about it. When we tried to ask one of the cart ladies about ordering a football from the fried section, she gave us another item instead and when we opened it up, it wasn't what we wanted. They kept trying to push more items on our table to get our money even though we repeatedly said no. They also charge for sauce and didn't tell us. Another waitress (who we didn't even interact with throughout our time) chased me down trying to pressure me to tip more. I have no problem tipping, but when the service is like this, I am not going to leave a 20% tip like usual. I will say the kind busser here was exceptional and although he didnt speak English, he was so kind and honestly made my day. Everyone else here was rude and unwelcoming. The mediocre food here is not worth the outright disrespectful and terrible service.
