She is patient and thoughtful and explains things in a way we humans can understand. She thoroughly knows dog behavior so can effectively help you work through any issues. I'm writing this review after having completed another successful session with the Tailored Dog Trainer herself, Ally Lantis. I originally found Ally about a year ago after having come from a trainer who recommended the use of aversive collars on my dog and employed training based on outdated "dominance" theories. I looked online and came across her website and immediately emailed her detailing my experiences and what I wanted to accomplish with my dog. At the time, Jax, my German Shepherd/Doberman mix, was about 3 months old and nipping and biting everything. I scheduled a private session where Ally gave us the tools and techniques to get his biting under control. Within a week of employing these techniques, the biting of hands, feet, and dangling sleeves had completely disappeared. A year past and my family and I realized that we were struggling with ways to stimulate him as well as deal with his rambunctious, adolescent behavior. He liked to chew on the wall and wooden furniture, pull on leash, and we started noticing that he had some anxiety. We emailed Ally and scheduled some sessions and she has been a lifesaver. She gave us tools and tips to deal with his anxiety, his under-stimulation, his destructiveness, and now a month and a half later, it's as if we have a completely different dog. He doesn't chew on the wall anymore, he's more responsive to commands, and he's coming along fantastically on his leash pulling. Ally is creative and resourceful in her training techniques and I know this has been said before but she really does "tailor" the training to the dog. I took my dog here in high hopes that it would help him and me become well equipped. But my pup always barked alot so they put a barrier in front of the area where we were sitting and just told us to keep giving him treats to keep him quiet. This was a group class for puppies. The trainers seemed to never pay attention to us. We were sort of just put in the corner. During the last 10 mins of class the pups were allowed to play and my pup was often kept aside by himself for the playtime instead of trying to get him to calm down or advising me on how to calm him down. I paid a lot of money and I ended up being VERY disappointed. I ended up not even going to the last 2 classes because of how we were treated in the previous sessions. I know people who recommend this place, but it seems like they prefer dogs who are already easy to train. I would not recommend. --- Update -- In response to the owner's comment: I lost all hope with those group classes by the third class. With my experience, there was no point in me sending an email. I wanted nothing to do with Tailored Dog Training. I was NOT advised to play a game with him. I WAS advised to continue to feed him treats to keep him distracted, therefore enforcing that behavior. It was not only me that thought that, but I had brought other people with me to our training session that had felt the same way. I was disappointed by the lack of guidance the trainers displayed. Even if my puppy was too excited for playtime, putting him in a corner without any sort of comment on how to calm him down is unacceptable. If you have a dog that is not cookie-cutter perfect, I advise you find a different, well-equipped dog trainer. read more

If I could rate Tailored and Ally with more than 5-stars I would! This is an outstanding dog training company and their approach to training is welcome and needed to counter the negative and harmful prong collar and yank and yank harder methods espoused by many trainers who believe that this is the only way to have control of your dog. We experienced this type of training and were incredibly uncomfortable with it and found ourselves and our dog increasingly anxious. It did little to help our large GSD understand what we wanted him to do and resulted in strangers thinking that we were being mean to our dog. It was crushing to us. Our dog is a rescue and we desperately wanted to fill in the gaps in his learning and help him to be even better while on walks. He is a big love-bug and has superb house manners. We knew that we had to do something different and began researching and found Tailored and Ally. Ally's use of positive-reinforcement techniques and her deep expertise in dog behavior and related human behavior has accelerated our learning and understanding of our dog. We ditched the prong collar for a freedom-harness and we've been working with Ally for over 6 months and will continue to do so. Our dog has made great strides. We learn something each time that we meet and Ally is incredibly generous with her knowledge and resources. She gives us good homework to do in-between the sessions and tips to enrich him. This place has been a nightmare for me. When I took my 3 pound 4 month old chihuahua to Tailored Dog Training she was a calm confident little girl that had never known fear. Since then, she has gone through a deep 6 day depression and emerged a nervous dog that whimpers, whines, and barks fearfully at the slightest provocation. As for that day, I regret that my phone lost its charge. I couldn't watch the live-stream but if I had, I would've taken her out of there. When I got home and watched the video I saw that a Rottweiler puppy 10 times her weight that was enormous compared to her kept cornering and terrorizing her over and over again throughout the one hour session. Distraught about what I had seen, I contacted the owner. I received a refund and I was offered a private 1 hour puppy social that was available due to a cancellation. In the end, I opted out of the free one hour, not wanting to take my chi back to the very place where she had been terrorized. In any case, all I wanted was the advice and help that I would need to help my little one heal from the trauma. That was not forthcoming. In an emailed response, the owner admitted that what took place should not have happened, she also wrote that my dog's subsequent depression and anxiety could not have resulted from her experience at Tailored Dog Training. However, she added that she would show the video to her staff so that they could review their practices. She also wrote that she was unable to sleep after watching the video. Anyone who cares about animals would have been unable to sleep after watching it. In addition to the Rottie, my puppy was also expected to get a nearly full grown hyper-active labrador to back off from where she was cornered. At one point she literally hops from the fear. All this was happening as the person holding the camera phone kept making remarks to the effect that my little one should learn how to "make corrections." She referred to my puppy by name as she was being barked at and backed into a corner several times, making it plain that she was observing the interaction and not taking action to remove the large dogs that had been put into the small breed pen. There were three small dogs in that pen and at times they were the minority, since there were at least three, sometimes four large breed dogs placed in the small breed pen. As written above, all I wanted was for them to help me fix what they broke, but the owner claimed that my puppies subsequent behavior could not be attributed to the experience she had there. The video shows just the opposite. My puppy was much changed after her experience there. They shattered her confidence and changed her from an easy-going dog to one that makes us unwelcome at places where calm dogs are allowed to go. In addition her separation anxiety has gone through the roof. I will do anything to help my little one heal from her trauma. I've been trying cbd, dog-calming pheremones, thundershirts, and I've contacted a professional dog specialist to get help. I've read all these great reviews of these people, but if they care about dogs, why would they allow my puppy to be terrorized for nearly an hour? What kind of person could hold up a camera phone and knowingly allow this to happen while making callous comments about the very behavior that is seen in the video? Where they like Dr. Jekyll and Mr.Hyde for a day, at my dog's expense? The best advice I can give is don't assume that you can trust people just because get great reviews. I'll never again make the mistake of forgetting my car phone charger at home. I might have saved my puppy and myself this agony. read more

We adopted Thor in the summer of 2012 after falling in love with this handsome Pitt bull mix rescue. He was 11 months old and we could tell that he would be the type of dog that needed time to warm up to new things. He wasn't mean- just fearful. We didn't know that this fear would turn him into a reactive dog. Over time he developed some very bad habits. He started barking and going on what looked like attack mode when we saw other dogs on leash, cats, and squirrels. I was at my wits end. I loved my dog but I couldn't figure out how to help him. I found Ally and Tailored Dog Training after already taking classes with another dog training company. Ally gives you and your dog so much more than just classes and lessons. You definitely get a tailored lesson even in her group classes. She has a very good social media presence and has always been available if anyone had questions or concerns. This has been HUGE, as every other place seems to not be available after class. She understands and has had experience with every breed and mix of dog possible and treats each person and dog as an individual with their own unique needs and strengths. I've taken almost every class that is offered and look forward to even possibly re-taking a few of them, simply because my dog and I enjoy them so much! I had such a lovely experience bringing my Silken Windhound puppy to the puppy social! He was very shy but the trainer was so helpful in making him comfortable. There were crates available if he needed a break from the other puppies. Lots of socialization toys too like tunnels and wobble boards! The facility is clean, easy to access, and fun! I took Ally's CGC class with my girl Bota. We had never taken a class at a park before so I was worried about Bota being able to pay attention. The first class I was right! Bota didn't heel well at all (she rocks at heeling). Second class she was closer to herself. By the end she was rocking again and passed her CGC test. I have used several of the services offered by Tailored Dog Training, and I have to say that I could not be more pleased! Piper and I started off with Level 1 classes with Chelsea. We felt like the class size was appropriate for a small-group learning experience; we were able to focus on Chelsea and she was able to spend some time with each of us to assist if we were having difficulty, suggest modifications, and also to praise Piper when she was doing well. We also did a combination of a day train and private lessons with Ally. I cannot recommend this highly enough! Ally started with taking Piper for the day to observe her behavior and personality. She sent updates throughout the day and detailed notes at the end to describe behaviors she noticed and suggestions for how to work on things we wanted to improve. We followed this with several private lessons to hone in on anything we wanted to work on. Piper has also enjoyed getting to know other dogs at Puppy Socials, and we really like the workshops that they offer. I always joke with Ally that *I* learn more than Piper from every lesson, but it is true! No dog trainer is going to be able to completely transform your dog in one session, but they can give you the tools that you need to be able to relate to your dog, learn about what they do and don't respond to, and how to shape the behaviors that you want, which is how Piper and I will be able to continue to grow together. Jeremy is a patient, knowledgeable, and professional trainer. We personally know him before he became a trainer. We asked his help in improving the behavior of our adult Pomeranian/American Eskimo dog. He has issues on barking, jumping, pulling on leash, and escaping. He had been trained before but still needs more training. Although we live in San Leandro, Jeremy took the time and effort to do a one-on-one training. Jeremy is always on time. Every time he comes he brings treats for Kito. Kito loves and listens to Jeremy. I love Jeremy's positive training skills. In between private sessions Jeremy gives me homework to do follow training. We had the pleasure of taking our 12 week old energetic aussie mix puppy to 2 puppy socials so far, and met both Ally and Chelsea (separately) who are both very helpful, full of advice and great with our puppy and others during the social. The social class was small but perfect for the puppies to play and learn how to greet other. Ally is awesome! We are huge fans of Ally, and of her training methods. We have worked with her doing private lessons, and have also taken her "distractions course." We have learned so much working with her, and have gained so much confidence as new dog owners. We adopted our frisky dog right after she turned 1. Her previous owner had done very little in the training department, so we were pretty overwhelmed when we got her home, desperately trying to undo many learned behaviors without utterly confusing our dog. Would like to let other people know how remarkable Ally has been training ME and my dog Oscar. We have had several private sessions, and what a transformation in Oscar, an 8 year old energetic yappy Yorky. The only command he knew was SIT and that was when he felt like it. My dog loved them both so much. She'd get so excited to see them every training session which was definitely always a good sign. I highly recommend Tailored Dog Training! Ally (owner) and her team are amazing! We rescued an 11 month old puppy who (from what the shelter stated) was a stray. We had a lot of work ahead of us, especially with the fact that he was reactive with other dogs. We had our first one on one session with Ally, who came to our home and within just one hour, was able to show us training and tips that worked right away. Granted, this is a process, so to actually see the results you want, you have to stay consistent with the training. So far, we have had 2 one-on-one sessions, a 5-week reactive rover training, are starting to work with them for doggy daycare as well as planning to attend their obedience training. We have been so happy with the progress our pup has made thanks to Tailored Dog Training. We brought our puppy to Ally when he was 12 weeks old, and haven't looked back. Now at 7 months, we had done 2 puppy classes, a distraction class and are thinking about the tricks class. Our entire family takes the class, and even my 8 year old son looks forward to going. The best part about Ally is her positive attitude and reinforcement. This review is long over due (Like winter of 2014 over due). My boyfriend and I went to tailored dog training hoping for help with our rescue dog in November 2014. Close by and reasonable pricing is what brought us here (and the Yelp reviews). Our dog was in pretty Bad shape obedience wise, and although the it was going to be group training we decided to try our luck anyway. For the first level of classes, our dog was the biggest and seemed to be oldest one there. He was hard to handle and we were told to work with him about 30-40 feet away from the rest of the group (okay with us, safety for the smaller dogs and puppies are important). Because we were placed so far away, my boyfriend and I constantly felt like we were disconnected from the group. Ally was very nice at first, but then she never came to help us train our dog in class. She would come over, ask how's it going and then leave without helping with our problems. She would just send Jeremy out to help us, but when she needed help with the other students he would have to leave and do the training for her while she moved on to "talk" with the other students . I get that she only had an our to work with all the dogs in the class, but it felt unfair that she spent a whole 2 minutes out of the hour with us and the rest of the time with everyone else who was allowed to be in the group circle. For our last class in the session, they cancelled due to rain and ended up rescheduling for when we were not available. We were never able to get our last class with her (and we didn't really want to go anyway at that point). There was no improvement with our dog unless we gave him crazy amounts of treats (suggested by ally). So at this point we felt it was better to just not reschedule and stop going. The only reason I'm giving this place 2 start instead of 1 is because Jeremy (the assistant) was very kind and helpful when Ally (the owner) was never there for us when we needed help. So Go Jeremy! We were able to get help from a wonderful woman in Concord that was awesome and helped us with everything. If you don't have a puppy or small toy dog, I DO NOT suggest bringing them here. If she didn't give up on us after that first class, we probably wouldn't have given up on her. read more

Ally is amazing. My 9-year-old Border Collie had many in-house problems, mainly barking and circling around my husband and I when we would leave the house. We could be leaving to take out the garbage and she would have a fit. Our first private session with Ally cured this. I am astounded that after years of trying to fix this problem by watching Youtube videos, reading countless blogs, and purchasing "calming" dog products, it only took Ally an hour to show us how to handle our dog. Within a week our dog was much more calm and we can leave the house with very few problems. After our second session our dog is successfully working on not barking at the doorbell and rushing to our guests. We plan to do a few more sessions with Ally for a couple of other problems. I cannot sing Ally's praises any louder. Her prices are very reasonable and 100% worth the money and time. read more

We have used Tailored for several classes with our puppy. Beginning with the puppy play time within days after he joined our family through their obedience classes and also several short courses. We have found all the trainers to be extremely professional and helpful. I trust my 1year old dog off leash in most occasions because of the amazing recall he has developed with the help of the recall class at a local park. Ally, Sarah, Jeremy and Rachelle have all been an invaluable part of our first year with our dog. We bring him as many places as we can and people always tell us how well behaved he is and ask us how to get their dog to act as well.
