The meat, tortillas (hose made) and overall concept of this place is something out of the NY Times. It just works. Also, the salsa bar is something out of my dreams. I was visiting El Paso and my friend who lives there recommended this place. I was pretty busy when we entered, an hour before closing. I got a sirloin quesadilla. It was pretty tasteless and there wasn't enough cheese to fill the tortilla. I wasn't much of a fan of any of their salsas, so that didn't help me out with the taste. This is definitely a local favorite. Excellent tacos that are freshly prepared. They have a loyalty program where you get $5 of your fist orders then $5 for every $40 spent . Since Taco Tote is a little bit on the pricey side this is a very welcomed initiative. The restaurant offers a very wide space to seat on your own and enjoy your tacos.. I like their Barbacoa tacos ! Received plates with mixed chicken adobado and sirloin meat on the same plate. MISSING ALL the sides and extras, no salsas, no lime nor anything that I ordered. Called the place and they said that they can give me a 10% off next visit or that I could drive over there (25 minutes drive) to take the wrong order so they could check the order. First time here. I had the combo with two tacos a side and a drink. The cost was $11. The chicken abodado taco was good but on the upper scale of average, however the beef fajita taco was incredible. Tender, flavorful and cooked just right. The rice was excellent with great spices and flavor. The refried beans were average, I'd recommend trying to charro beans. But, all I had was the Beef Fajita Panchos and I had an upset stomach all night; which there didn't seem to be a reason for it. Went in for lunch on our way from the airport. The guy taking our order was very patient with my elderly mother. We gathered our chips and drinks and on to the salsa and toppings bar. Lots of choices! The food took a little while but not too bad. Everything was good, all of us enjoyed our meal. I gave 4 stars cuz of the price. I've been staying away from taco tote for the 3 years I've been in El Paso be because I assumed it was just a chain with mediocre food. However when my go to Sunday breakfast burrito place was closed I decided to check it out and I was so pleasantly surprised! The chicken quesadillas are AMAZING. El Paso native living in Austin metro area for the past 15 years but I remember when this place was quite good so when I am visiting my hometown I try to stop by. First, the service was good, there was no line and someone promptly took my order, received my order within 8 minutes which was not a good sign because that usually means the food was not prepared fresh. I was right, ordered the sirloin family platter for 2 and it was dry and chewy like it had been sitting there for a while plus no grilled onions that is supposed to come with it. The corn tortillas were not fresh but reheated, burnt from being reheated and falling apart. I also ordered a fajita taco tote pack which came out to almost $17, that is quite high for two tacos, a side of beans and regular drink. The fajita meat was way better than the sirloin and was informed the fajita was prepared when ordered so that explains it. One the plus side, they do have an excellent salsa bar, better than anything I've seen in Austin. I wish they had prepared the sirloin when we ordered it, don't mind waiting a bit if it's fresh food, same for corn tortillas. Overall it was average. read more

There is a section of my heart (about 1/4 of it) reserved strictly for El Taco Tote. I never have an issue with consistency or staff. Or anything for that matter, but I'd heard stories about this one. I was forewarned and I laughed in their faces. I knew what I wanted when I went in (the pork adobado), but my friend said, "Why don't you get the pork al pastor?" So I explain my reasoning behind my order and while I did the cashier interjected, "They're the same thing!" LIES! LIES! ALL LIES! If they were the same thing, they'd have the same name...also I've had both and they are not the same. But whatevs. The food came pretty quick, but wasn't the same as the Eastside, Northeast, or even Juarez locations. And a tad overcooked. The salsa bar and chips were satisfactory. Yummy! The mushroom tacos are delicious! I'm not sure why they aren't on the menu, but they do exist and you should definitely get some. I also really enjoyed the wide variety of salsas they have. I placed a Favor order also a private order there was a long wait time I waited picked up the food signed the tickets they had attached the wrong receipts to the wrong bag so I delivered the wrong food. When I realized what I had done I contacted the place and they told me I needed to come in so they could call corporate they needed to see the receipt whenever I got there the general manager Georgiana crews told meThat she would not be replacing the order because I delivered the wrong food but I delivered the wrong food because the wrong receipt was on the wrong bag she did not care so I got an $11 order the customer I delivered two got a $30 order nobody got what they ordered I am not happy with this place!!!!!! Do Not order the salad from here. It was all basically shredded cabbage and some kind of sprouts that did not taste like you were supposed to eat them. We kept finding hard parts of the cabbage that your supposed to cut off. They give you a measly amount of meat that you couldn't even make one taco with. The meat was also very fatty. Feels like I was a huge bother to the staff. When my food was delivered the waitress (Lydia)she slammed my food down and simply just walked away. I went to the counter to receive my chips, again I was felt a huge bother that I wanted what I ordered. Basically almost dropping the bag while handing it me. The worst part was a family of 4 came in with the mother struggling with her newborn almost dropping her child that was in the car seat. Back when I lived out of state I'd go absolutely nuts for Taco Tote --first stop from the airport kinda love. Well much to my dismay this place is unrecognizable from the establishment I once loved. Family and friends had warned me this chain was a lost cause but I wanted to see it for myself. Though it was nearly empty, the cashier said our food wouldn't be ready for at least 20 minutes, regardless of what we ordered. It ended up being close to 30 min, but I didn't mind the wait as long as we got our delicious sirloin tacos. Joke's on me because I ended up getting charcoal tacos since nearly every single piece of meat was burned beyond salvation. My little boy at some point started coughing and pulled a charred block out of his mouth. In summary: the expensive $5+ tacos were all burnt; the baked potato was cold and they had run out of sour cream; the tortillas were dismal compared to the fresh thick "maiz" we once knew; the once fresh chips are now straight out of the bag and stale. Never going there again and I hope the Heras know how their restaurant is running because they're at a DEFCON1. So disappointed. read more

I feel a bit sad about having to write this review. I have come to El Tacotote for many years now. Slowly, it has been decreasing in quality. I remember the days when they actually would put a lot of meat in the tacos, good days. Tonight, my wife and I had dinner there. As mentioned earlier, the tacos have little meat. So far the different types of salsas have made up for most of the dearth of meat. Tonight, even the salsas did not make the trick. My wife had the barbacoa. She.mentioned it had a weird taste to it; nothing extra guacamole could not fix at the time. I ordered tripitas. What a mistake! It is clear no one has bothered to properly prepare the tripe before frying it. My tripitas had large globs of fat attached to them --this is NOT desirable or normal or okay in Mexico or anywhere else in the world-- Gross. Anyhow, I tried to clean the tripitas as best as I could with a napkin and was able to make a mediocre taco. By the way, that funny taste with the barbacoa was abnormal, and my wife has been stuck in the toilet for ages now. In summary, Tacotote gets 2 starts. And we get 1 for even tryig to consume the food in this establishment. read more

Whoa, Whoa, Whoa, 4.5 stars for this place? Come on! I was driving from Phoenix back to Dallas and spending the night in El Paso. As my wife was driving I checked the nearby grub on my yelp at. And this place had amazing reviews from everyone. So easy decision. I pulled up and already had my doubts. It gives a cici's-esque vibe, and its located next to a dollar store and a big lots. But I persevere. 2 tacos, beans, rice, quesedilla, and a drink ran me about 16 bucks. Expensive but people say this place is amazing so lets keep going. Salsa bar with free chips is pretty cool but reminds me a lot of Taco Bueno. Food was brought out to my table and guess what, looks dead up like taco bueno. I will admit the steak is pretty good but in no way does this deserve 5 stars. I guess if it was super cheap it would be a good stop but 16 bucks is a lot. I mean, thats like 3.8 million pesos. I gave this place 3 stars. Its not bad but not anything to rave about. I am tempted to give this place 2 stars to help even out the average but I'll be fair.
