It was Cinco de Mayo AND Taco Tuesday during COVID-19 and we were having an unexpectedly difficult time finding delicious tacos with a simple ordering system and a reasonable wait time. When a friend mentioned a taco truck that she drove by every day on her way to work, we decided to give it a try. Tacos El Amigo is a taco truck located on the corner of 1st and National, and it already boasted a long line when we arrived (to be fair, socially-distanced lines always look intimidatingly long). But it was open and we were hungry, so we patiently waited in the chilly evening for the coveted tacos. The menu is quite extensive and included a large variety of taco meats as well as other Mexican staples such as enchiladas, taco salads, and quesadillas. Interestingly, the truck also offers hot dogs and hamburgers for the adventurers out there...
But we came for tacos, so tacos we ordered. Warm corn tortillas and savory meats topped with onion and cilantro (and sometimes lettuce) definitely hit the spot after 30 minutes in line. I really enjoyed the pastor taco which was well-seasoned and juicy. My husband also liked the carnitas and barbacoa tacos he ordered. The asada taco, however, was less impressive and a bit bland for my taste. A friend also had some criticism of the Mexican corn, noting that it was "missing some ingredients" such as lime and cheese (which they had run out of).
Overall, it was an authentic Milwaukee taco truck experience with no frills and cheap eats at $2 per taco. Definitely try the pastor! read more
