For an on campus restaurant, this food is good. They come close to authentic mexican and the prices are reasonable as well. I'm not sure how inclined I would be to eat here if it wasn't on campus, but I do enjoy my meal every time! Good Mexican food and nice addition to campus! Located in the old student center (across from the Main Gym), they have a nice outdoor deck with some shade, some indoor tables as well as individual counter seats around the windows. New location so they're on top of it with service but still working through it a little. Breakfast, lunch and dinner options, nice salsa bar with roasted green onions, red and green sauce, etc.. I had a pollo asado (chicken) burrito with a side of guacamole. Nice portions. Hot and fresh, and well seasoned chicken. Excellent guacamole. I have been to Taco Villa probably over 20 times, every time has been some form of a disappointment. This latest visit was the last straw. I ordered 3 carnitas tacos to go. While carnitas pork has some expectation of being greasy, this was unacceptable. There must have been a half centimeter of pooled grease in the container and plenty of it had already soaked into the taco shells. The flavor was good, actually, but the grease was too disgusting. I ate one taco and threw out the others. What does this say about the quality of their meat? Not sure... Or is it the cooking perhaps? It's frustrating that this restaurant literally has a captive audience of thousands of students but can't make a San Diego quality taco or burrito. The managers need to go visit The Taco Stand, Oscar's, or Lucha Libre and get an idea of what their food should actually resemble. Their prices are decent, but the ordering process is confused by their massive television menu that swaps back and forth to antagonize the customer. read more

Taking a star off after they have gotten my customized order wrong something like 4 out of the last 6 times. All I asked for was NO PICO on my burrito. I know they're busy, but c'mon guys. Food: Average, I've had MUCH better Mexican food and in terms of sheer quantity of ingredients within each item, its average, it definitely doesn't reflect the price you're paying per item. The Tacos are average, I've had the Carne Asada and Pollo and both are average, not the tastiest. The Surf and Turf is pretty good and my go-to here, their specialty fries ( Carne Asada, etc.) are average, the fries aren't all that great and the meat isn't the tastiest. I think with the amount of times I've said average in this section you can assume the food is well average. BUT it is the best Mexican food place on campus ( if that means anything?) Plus if you need to ever break some teeth as an excuse to skip a midterm I recommend their chips. Service: I've catered here multiple times for events for organizations and they're very sharp, on time and the order is always exactly the ways its ordered. In store the service is quick and you typically aren't waiting too long. Its a good hop and go place. Space: It's really cozy and a good spot to bring large groups to eat and/ or study together. It's got a couple benches for outside seating as well. Everything is very clean and the store in general has everything conveniently located. Cost: Its typical to most Mexican places around San Diego, you have Taco Tuesday ( $2 Tacos) and the burritos float around the $6-8. Its decently priced and on par with everything else at Price Center. For the proportions you get in a cater order, its good value and could feed a good number of people. Overall: Hmm I think I mentioned it a bit, but average. I mean its campus food, I know it won't be a Tacos El Gordo, but when it opened I kinda hoped it would be at least Taco Stand level, but sadly all my dreams get crushed so. I mean its good don't get me wrong, just for the same price you can go off campus and get much better and larger proportioned Mexican food. read more

This place is (by far) my favorite place to dine on the UCSD campus. The food is always hot, taste great and comes out quickly-even when they are busy. The employees are all very friendly and work diligently to ensure each order is correct and to the customer promptly. The prices very fair too. I'd highly recommend this place if you are on campus at UCSD. It would be difficult to find (or park) if you are unfamiliar with the campus, but worth venturing to if you have an extra moment to find it. read more

My first visit was the second day they opened and I had a lackluster bean and cheese burrito that took 25 minutes to make. I chalked it up to a new opening and vowed to give it another try. My second visit was 3 weeks later when we ordered two different breakfast burritos that took 48 minutes to make while there were only 2 people in front of us. I won't bring up how aghast I was at paying $3 for a 4 oz side of sour cream since they didn't yet know how to just "add sour cream" to the actual burritos. My third visit was not horrible, though it was not great either. I ordered a pollo asado burrito on a whole wheat tortilla via online ordering on Yelp. Love the ordering online feature as it saves me soooo much time. Unfortunately, I arrived at the time I was supposed to and the burrito had not been siting under a warmer so it was cold. Heating it up would have made the guacamole and pico de gallo taste funny so I just ate it cold. Lastly, while the taste was not bad, I was surprised at the price $6 compared to the size. I've never finished a whole burrito before and this was easy to consume... roughly larger than my Galaxy s7 phone. Hmmm. I think I would only return due to the easy of ordering on Yelp and close proximity to my office. read more

tl;dr: Dank tacos, not so dank price. Get something else if you have a gaping void in your stomach and in your wallet. --- Tried this place for the first time, been hearing good things about it, so why not? If I could summarize my experience in one phrase, it would be this: quality over quantity. These tacos are very good, I got the carne asuhda and pollo. I can tell they've used very fresh ingredients and are on par with tacos I usually get at my go-to taco shop. No complaints there. Now, don't come here expecting you'll get your bang for your buck when you order their tacos. As other reviews mention, they have recruited UCSD's finest nanoengineers to masterfully craft the world's most nanoscopic taco for the macroscopic price of $3. Okay, all jokes aside, these tacos are very small for what they're priced at. Came in hungry, ordered 2 tacos, left hungry... and sad. But I understand that there's a premium to operating on campus and I went on a Monday, not a Tuesday... I was going to take off a star, but I should've asked the cashier how big the tacos were, or at least have read these reviews prior to ordering them, so I won't. Like I said, even though I inhaled these tacos in 1 bite and I died a little inside knowing I just ate $3 in less than 5 seconds, they're very good and I can tell they've put a lot of effort into their craft. I suppose I was mislead into thinking this place offered huge portions after my friend got chicken quesadillas for $7 (so get these!! they're very good--trust me, I took a bite... or two). This is a pretty good on-campus eatery. I think this is comparable to the taco joints off campus. I've gone twice and tried the queso tacos and rolled tacos. Queso tacos were pretty loaded with meat, guac, and all the other standard taco ingredients. I prefer my tacos a bit messier as these were really clean. The tortilla itself is thicker and bigger than the ones you'd find off campus (they use 1 tortilla). The rolled tacos were a bit dissapointing. They very very compact and barely had any meat inside. They do put guac on top though. Also, dont expect to get much cheese as less than half of my tacos were covered in cheese (cotija?). The horchata is quite odd. Both times I've had it and tasted somewhat of a floral sweet hint. Sort of similar to jamaica. I would sample it before deciding on buying some if i were you. Regardless, prices are ok for being an on campus location. The quality is better than most as well. Definitely wouldn't go more than once per week though. read more

I had a meeting earlier today on UCSD's campus, which I expected to take 30 minutes to an hour at most. Well, 4.5 hours later, my stomach on the brink of failing, I asked a young gentlemen if he knew of any good spots on campus to eat. And by "good spots," I meant anything that would not cause me physical pain and/or require a nap like the food on my Alma Mater's campus in Miami, Florida, years ago. The kind gentlemen informed me a new taco shop had recently opened on campus, and although he had never tried the place, he had heard nothing but good things. He then directed me towards the promise land, i.e. Taco Villa. As I walked towards Taco Villa, I have to be honest, despite what the gentlemen had told me, I'm thinking, "great, I'm heading to not only a taco shop, but an ON CAMPUS taco shop." Things were looking grim. The moment I stepped into Taco Villa things started to take a turn for the best I was greeted by a young gentlemen who appeared to be a manager or owner. He asked me what I typically ordered from taco shops. "California Burritos," I responded. "Great", he replied, "we make a damn good California Burrito." And so that's what I went with. While waiting for burrito, I stood near the counter and looked around at the restaurant. I forgot I was at an on-campus eatery. Everything from the layout of the restaurant, to the intricate details of the restaurant were quiet impressive, not by college eatery standards, but by any restaurant's standards. As I looked around, sort of lost in my own world, the young manager or owner snapped me out of my food deprived analysis of the restaurant's interior by informing me that my burrito was ready. I know they say hunger is the best sauce, but having lived in San Diego for over a decade, eaten at countless taco shops, simply put, Taco Villa makes a damn good burrito. What impressed me even more, was that it appeared the restaurant was 99% percent complete, yet their food was 110% complete, and although I was stuffed from my burrito, I was facing a 2 to 3 hour car ride, and so I ordered their carne asada fries to go. After leaving the restaurant, but now in my car driving out of the campus, I found my hands in my to-go bag of fries. Good thing I did not have the luxury of having such a good eatery on my campus when I went to college, or the proverbial "freshman 15," would have to be changed to the "freshman 30." Bottom line: this is probably the most legit on campus eatery I have ever eaten at, which is why I am even taking the time to write this review, so others can enjoy the experience I did. I ordered two things on taco tuesday: the carne asada tacos and 10 rolled up tacos. Everything was great... except the meat. You were so close Taco Villa, you almost had me with the delicious tortilla and refreshing atmosphere but your meat, it's so bland. I wouldn't mind updating my review later on if they do an upgrade, just some more seasoning, flavor, and care put into either the carne asada or beef and you'll have quality food. The pace at which orders come out is adequate, nothing too fast but not slow either. With a queue of about 15 people in front of me, it took about 18 minutes or so. Step up your game. read more

after waiting years for this place to open...ordered a few minutes before 11 AM today and while there wasn't a line for ordering, there were definitely many people waiting around for their orders. I didn't receive my food until 11:35. That kind of wait during off-peak hours is a little bit ridiculous. Secondly, the menu says that the avocado taco is battered and deep fried avocado. It's not. Just slices of avocado mixed with lettuce, tomato, and some jalapeno slices from a can...I'm pretty pissed I paid ~$3.50 for that. My al pastor taco was also dripping with so much ...meat juice?...that the taco was too soggy to pick up. I've had their al pastor quesadilla, which was pretty good, but the taco was so bland and so, so soggy. read more

I've been waiting for this place to open for awhile, and I finally got a chance to eat here! I ordered the pollo asado burrito...and yeah. Each bite was pure salt. It was mostly chicken and barely any guac. When I did get get the opportunity to have a bite of guac, it was so refreshing and a great compliment to the salty chicken... however that was a rare moment during my meal. I ended up forcing myself to finish the burrito because it was just too salty. I might give this place a chance again, but as a first impression, it was a very disappointing experience. read more

Since I live on campus, I figured I had to try this place out just to see what it's like. Plus, it was Tuesday and so some of their tacos were only $2. The Taco Tuesday deal only works for carne asada, al pastor, and pollo asado. As other reviews have already stated, the food can take a while to be served, but it's nice to know that they take some time to actually prepare the food. As for the food itself, the carne asada taco was pretty good. I was surprised and impressed that the corn tortilla was handmade. The tortilla was thick, had good flavor on its own, and wasn't dry. And the carne asada is better quality than you'll find elsewhere on campus. The al pastor tasted alright, but I didn't like the meat as much. So I'd say this place is better than most options on campus, especially because the tortillas are good. And I wouldn't mind going here for another Taco Tuesday. read more

To follow up on my review below finally at 12:15pm the manager strolled in with my order. Half an hour late. No apologies, no rushing, just strolled in. He stated he didn't know where my building was. That's something he should have figured out before leaving, especially since he had 2 months to look it up. I ask for some compensation and he said he would contact me the next day. Also he forgot the plates I requested, luckily I had bought plates just in case. 4 days passed and he still never contacted or apologized to me. I had to follow up for compensation. I spoke to Maria who was very apologetic and offered me a discount which I appreciate. But the male manager is completely unprofessional so beware. The reason for the updated 3 stars is because the food was good and Maria compensated me for the trouble they caused. read more

I see a few people complaining about the wait... the place is brand new and right on campus.. it's understandable that it's busy right now, you can skip the rush hour lunch time and come at 11 or 2 or any other time of the day. Or you can wait, which I did, and trust me the food is worthy of the wait! They are on point!! The food is right up there with my favorite restaurants. The fact that the tortillas are homemade buries the competition, especially since they are the best I've ever had!! I had both the carne asada and the al pastor tacos and the meat is so tender and perfectly seasoned!! Love it!! A pretty uneven experience so far. The burritos are pretty good (4stars). I've had the carne asada and pollo burrito. Love their guac and salsa. Tried the enchilada but was disappointed. The chicken filling was kinda bland and no cheese inside, just a smattering on top. I prefer a bit (ok a lot) more. Plus, they served it with refried beans not black beans. The wait time can be long, even around 11a. They are only a few months old, so obviously they've got some kinks to work out. Update - loong wait time, 20 min for a burrito?? After my last few times here I thought this place would be getting better but alas that is not the case. I ordered a Mulitas quesadilla and what I received was a disappointment. The inside was far too oily and this showed in the tortillas, which were fresh looking, but oily. Also the yelp page notes this place is one dollar sign but their portions are a joke. Pictured will be a Mulitas Quesadilla that is quite literally the size of a few slices of provolone deli cheese. Not pictured are their burritos which are also smaller in size than just about every other place that serves burritos. Yes their ingredients are fresh but for a place on a college campus a main concern has to be portion sizes. This place is still fairly new and I have high hopes they can find a medium between high quality food and good portions for similar pricing. read more

This place has really disappointed me the times I've gone. The first time I went I simply asked for an order of Fries with Guacamole, yet when I received it there were shreds of meat in it when I specifically asked for there not to be. I went another time for them to redeem themselves and ordered the same thing. This time the fries were soggy and there was such a small amount of guac it was ridiculous. I have had the carne asada burrito and lacked flavor so I stay away from that. so now and then I get the carnitas burrito... still waiting for the "dang that was good" moment. never really consistant. today the burrito was cold, dry and lacked flavor. the times I had it prior to today, the meat was juicy and a little bit flavorful. NEVER dry and cold as it was today.The burritos seems to be getting smaller too. When I do come here I am starving so I would think food would taste really good to someone who is hungry. I keep giving it a chance but always a big disappointment. Maybe I should try something else next time.Hoping someone at TV reads reviews and improve their consistancy. Never came here before in the past. I was a student at UCSD for many years. The place is nice and seems like a good place to study if you don't mind some noise. The staff is super friendly and courteous. I picked out my order and it was ready in no time! The food is pretty good. I ordered a California Burrito, a staple food in San Diego. Meat tasted and good and the fries were great. It had just the right amount of sour cream and cheese. Salsas are good too, especially the orange. I'm convinced: it's a great place for great service and good food. If you're in the need for Mexican food but don't want to leave campus, then this is the place. I'll be back! read more
