I know it's not fancy and it looks old and outdated but the flavor of the meat in the tacos was very very good, as well as the sauce that accompanied it. I can't remember the last time I was in a restaurant surrounded by other customers talking about how much they LOVED the place. Yet that is exactly what happened a couple of days ago. Despite living in Lees Summit for over a decade and being aware of Taco Via's presence, I never stopped in. I'm not into any type of fast food and Taco Via is pretty much a fast food place. But in a hungry and hurried moment a couple of weeks ago, I decided to stop. I had a cheese taco and side item. Prices were really reasonable (more $ than Taco Bell, less $ than a sit down Mexican restaurant) so my expectations were not high. The lady behind the counter was courteous and seemed to sincerely appreciate me coming in. There were two young adults in the kitchen busy cooking. So I've already taken notice that they're not a typical place run by 16 year old kids. Then I get my taco. Wow.... it was a nice, big taco. Plenty of hamburger and it not the crummy mushy stuff either. Plenty of cheese. I returned to try the enchiladas. They were pretty darned good too. Feeling like I'd probably just been lucky on my first two times, I returned a 3rd and 4th time. Each visit was a really good and reasonably priced experience. Here's the thing, every time I've been in there another customer has been telling the lady at the window how far they drove to get there. Or how much they love their food. Or that once they started buying Taco Via for their lunch everyone else in their office wanted it too. There have been two $100.00 + orders going out in two of my four visits. Two days ago, the four other people also waiting for their food (a huge order was being prepared) raved to each other about how they've been coming for years, wanted Taco Via to open up a location closer to where they lived, and that they loved their sauce. One guy in front of me was buying dinner for three people and ordered FIFTEEN cups of sauce. FIFTEEN. He said he would be in trouble if he came home with any less. One customer claimed their food was addicting. I'm actually regretting not trying this little family owned business a few years ago. No, it's not of the same caliber as my beloved Guadalajara Cafe (RIP) or other authentic places but it's quick and reasonably priced to go American/Mexican food. I don't look for reasons to be offended so nothing hanging on the walls bothered me. A solid 4 out of 5 stars for semi Mexican food featuring hamburger, chicken and bean entrees. I found it just okay. worthy of a taco. I got a bit over whelmed at their basic selections. Looked forever to find one enchilada which they didn't have on the menu. So I ordered a taco, which was huge and tostada. The sauce was a bit on the spicy side, the meat, well flavored and seasoned. I believe I have the same cheese in my refrigerator, and the sauce really didn't have much flavor. The tostada was basic, refried beans blahish. again, it was topped with meat, which was okay. Lettuce, cheese and a tomato. Their drinks weren't thrilling,I'm not seven sure they had iced tea, so I ordered water. Tacos were 1.79. Pretty good price. One of my favorite fast food places in kc. The food is always good, they prude themselves in quality food quick. You pay a little extra but it is so worth it. I had lunch for $6. Totally generic quasi-Mexican fast food. If you're looking for Mexican food, you should go to a *real* Mexican restaurant. This place is perfect if you're looking for a nice, sedate, predictable, safe, wholesome, family-friendly environment. If you enjoy mauve vinyl booths and 80's aesthetics, this place is for you. It's also a great place for your Teens for Jebus group to meet after school, to plan their trip to bible camp. Taco Via is without a doubt, hands-down, no competition, the absolute best place to review the ten commandments while you wait for your food, with the soundtrack of contemporary christian radio in the background. Yep, it's right up there next to the menu board. Oddly, there are more commandments than items on the Taco Via menu. I know there's the joke about how Mexican food is like 5 ingredients in various combinations, but these folks take mexi-minimalism to a whole new level. You got your ground beef wrapped in a flour tortilla, your ground beef wrapped in a corn tortilla, your ground beef taco, your rice and beans, a couple other surprises, and that's it. Shredded yellow cheese all around! One of the most awesome things about this place is a couple of the wacky items available on their illuminated picture board. Without even realizing it, they've created a whole new cuisine, some kind of bizarre fusion that involves hamburger and hot dog buns and taco meat. And a flat tostada covered in canned salsa and canned cheese is a nacho! It's basically the kind of place white people go when they want to pretend they're eating Mexican food, but don't want to actually deal with any Mexican people. I was born in 1989, so I don't really know what the 80's were like, but Taco Via probably resembles the decade well. I remember going to places like Taco Via in the mid 90's and they were outdated then. The food looks like a bunch of stoners made it for a bowling alley snack bar. This place makes Taco Bell look authentic. If I were Mexican, I would be offended that this place is even considered Mexican food. If I could scrounge up the cheapest possible ingredients in a supermarket, I don't think I could find shittier lettuce, diced tomatoes, and ground beef than what Taco Via has. When I ordered for my burrito or Sancho to come with sour cream, they brought it out in a packet that you get in a cafeteria. I probably consumed more transfat at this place today then the past year combined. Despite all of this, I fully enjoyed my meal. I appreciated being taken back to an era when our country was unapologetic at our crappy imitations of other culture's food. This probably was the closest thing too ethnic food in Lee's Summit 30 years ago. I love how they awkwardly have jesus and the ten commandments plastered everywhere, making little shits like me afraid of bursting into flames by just walking in there. So thank you Taco Via, for taking me back to an era of American Exceptionalism, a time when we were too busy winning the Cold War to actually notice our attempts of mimicking other countries foods were failing horribly. The restaurant offers a nice cultish vibe that caters to the Bible Belt. It's a great place to bring your Jewish inlaws from out of town. The restaurant is very clean, I will say that's one positive point for the Via. I appreciate the throwback neon lighting and self-serve taco sauce. I seriously question the other reviewers taste when they say the sauce is appetizing and delicious. It is watered down vinegar ketchup that sits out on a counter. Also charging for refills is actually ungodly, in my opinion. Do yourself a favor and visit this place when you want a one-of-kind experience but only after you have eaten a real meal. This little gem is buried in Deer Brook Plaza, a strip mall off an outer road east of 291 Hwy in the north part of Lee's Summit. It's one of two surviving Taco Via's, the other is in Olathe, KS. The Lee's Summit one has been in business since 1968. Getting there, for me, involves a road trip, but it's totally worth it! I'm addicted to their taco dog, and always order a nacho (cheese only) to go along with it. The taco dog has the dog and bun, of course, plus a mildly spicy taco meat, shredded cheese melted on top, with a little squiggle of red sauce on top. The nacho usually has red sauce (and jalapeno pepper slices) on it, but I get plenty of that on the dog. One bite of taco dog, one bite of nacho ... heaven in my mouth! When I get a craving for a taco dog (and nacho!), no other chili cheese dog will suffice. It's a good thing this restaurant isn't in my neighborhood ... I'd weight considerably more! Their menu offers many dishes more authentically Mexican (Americanized versions, anyway), but I've never ordered anything else here, so really can't give you an honest description or opinion of them! You'll just have to try Taco Via' for yourself and write your own review! You walk in and up to the counter, peruse the menu board, and place your order and pay. They hand you one of those little number tickets, then you wait until they call your number and you go pick up your order at the counter. The wait usually isn't very long, and the service is friendly, and special requests are graciously met. So far, they've never messed up on my picky requests. Currently, fountain drinks are Pepsi brands. Refills are available for a small charge. This is a small restaurant with a few booths for two, and a number of booths that comfortably seat four, and I think, one larger booth that might comfortably hold five or six, so if you go in with a bigger group, you'll have to break up into smaller groups to seat yourselves. Their store hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Closed on Sunday and Monday. Ten Commandment paper mats line the serving trays, and Christian music plays softly in the background. If you chill easily, bring a light wrap, it's always cool in the dining room ... maybe the spicy food is supposed to keep you warm. =) Drat! Now I've made myself hungry for a taco dog, and it will be at least four days before I'm able to get to Taco Via'! read more

It's fresh and they have a wide variety of items available. They've been around forever and is run by a very nice family that I enjoy visiting with (even my husband who is NOT religious at all). Each time I've been there the restaurant is clean. I've also seen others here complain about having to pay for refills-here's a hint, buy the large plastic cups, bring them back and only pay $.70! I am biased. I love Taco Via. I started going over 35 years ago to the one in Metro North. The Taco Dog is to die for. Someone else already mentioned it, but this "Americanized" Mexican food. Don't come here looking for some kind of authentic mex, please. This is what Taco Bell WISHES they were. Real beef, real cheese, and served with Spanish Gardens taco sauce. My only complaint is that it is a bit expensive, it adds up real fast if my whole family of 4 goes together. The food is pretty good, but overpriced for fast food tacos. I like the Sancho Brava! It's a small burrito covered in cheese sauce, salsa, and jalapenos, and comes with like 8 chips. However, it is about $7. At Taco Bell, something similar would be around $4. I realize that the quality is better at Taco Via, but that is the market that they have placed themselves in. The 2 star rating is more in regard to this particular location's ambiance. As several others have stated, there is an unusual amount of direct Christian decor throughout the establishment. For example, the Ten Commandments are posted congruent with the menu AND printed on each placemat. I am not anti-Christian, but if it were another religion (Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, etc.) that was heavily supported and displayed, there would be protesters in the parking lot, in addition to the occasional hate crime against this Mexican restaurant. Was always a favorite until today. We are here about once every 2 weeks. Always too pricy but is a step up from the Bell. I have always been put off by the fact you pay for refills on drinks. In this day WHO still charges for refills? In fact the Via on 95th has fountain machine for customer access. Today was the final straw. Don't buy into the whole Christian atmosphere. Money is still number one. Aside from still charging for refills, today I came in with my 4 year old who knows what they have and said In front of the owner " I would like a crunchy taco and nachos with no sauce". I order 2 addl tacos for me. Out comes the food and it's their flat crispy tortilla nacho. I said " oh I'm sorry I thought I ordered the nachos". Well you did. No my daughter wants just chips and cheese nachos. So she says "do you want some nachos?" Yes please "ok that will be 5.27". Really. My daughter says why are you buying more daddy. I said " well they have 2 different kind of nachos and I ordered wrong I guess". Counter lady (who is the owner) says " well no we have 4 different nachos". Seriously if you are selling 4 types of nachos, don't you think you should ask which f'n one I'm ordering!?!?!?! Especially when its ordered by a 4 year old. And to charge 5.27 for chips and 3 oz of out of the can nacho cheese!!!!!!! Most places would just say "here you go. Have this $.38 worth of product for free for being a loyal customer. Didn't care for this location at all. First of all when my boyfriend and I walked in we were the only blacks in the joint and yes we got stares as if they had never seen a black person before in life. Even a nasty stare from the female cook in the back with short black hair and glasses which made me VERY hesitant to have her prepare our food at all. The chicken in the chicken taco was VERY tough and when we tried to return it we were told they can't exchange food nor did they offer money back. Even the Asian girl that worked there who was going around cleaning tables walked right past us looked right at us and didn't open her mouth to say one word. Just strange unprofessional and tacky. At the table we sat at there was a baby ant infestation. It was gross to have ants crawling all over the table as we ate. The lady that took our order was ok. She was professional but again you could tell that us being there was awkward for her. Would I go back to this location? ABSOLUTELY NOT. The only positive experience I had at Taco Via today was that the bean burrito tasted as I recall it tasting years ago at the Taco Via Indian Springs location. We've been going to this Taco Via for 14 yrs, I have 3 kids and they have always loved the nachos and also their burritos since they were babies. HOWEVER, I will not be returning after an incident that was handled extremely poorly. My mom went in to LS Taco Via to buy a nacho. When she went up to front to pick up her tray, she dropped her nacho by accident on the ground. The workers saw the whole thing. She was so frustrated, and a little embarrassed, and asked for another one. The worker told her that will be another $1.89 plus tax. My mom was in shock, and said well we won't be doing business here anymore. Do you realize how much business we've brought you? We've been here for years, and she left. I decided to go in and talk to owner (only because my son has been sick and wanted Taco Via, and I refused to let them go there until I spoke w/owners). So, today I went in after calling in burrito and nacho for my son. When I arrived, I quietly tried to talk to owner about the situation that was handled so poorly involving my mom. I told her, you understand we have been coming here loyally for years, but we havn't been back since my mom had such a horrible experience. I explained to her I felt maybe there was a misunderstanding, because I just knew they wouldn't do business this poorly. The owner stated, our policy is if you drop anything you have to repurchase. She almost was trying to argue. I explained it was a nacho! Then she went on to say she has to make it a rule across the board, she stated kids drop stuff all of the time, and some people put food on counter and unwrap. I explained she didn't do any of those, and the point is that is absurd to treat a loyal, 73 yr old customer in that manner. I explained that I am a nurse, and deal with varieties of people, but that I've never treated an older adult in this manner, nor would I let anyone else get away w/this. I grabbed my sons to go order, grabbed some extra sauce (The things you will do for your sick kid!), and told them we will NEVER be doing business there again!!!!!!!
