Okie doke, we were drawn to TR based on the reviews! We pulled up and there was only 1 car ahead of us and they moved on quickly. While waiting, I was looking at the building and wondering why I was there bc it looks horrible (gross) and uninviting. The Enchiladas Rancheras was quite good, but really soupy and by the time I got to my chips they were completely soggy. The meal was not good enough for me to want to get it again, but if I did go back, this would be the only thing I'd order and that earns the restaurant 1 star. Famous Puffy Tacos are basically like eating Taco Bell. Simple as that. The tamales were great - the flavor was what you expect if you've had tamales throughout your life. They were also very large and most tamales I've had have been much smaller. This earns a 2nd star. The Asada platter was very average. Not something we would ever order again. Passing by and noticed this place it had a long line, I was curious. I actually wanted just a taco, I wasn't all that hungry. I ended up getting the Cali burrito based on previous reviews. The lady at the window was very nice and said it was popular. I asked her if she made my order right, full of toppings she assured me she did. I asked if I needed salsa .. she said she put some hot sauce in there. She gave me some of her special sauce she said that she charges .50, but gave it to me due to my first time visiting here. This place ROCKS! The puffy tacos are truly delicious so believe the hype. It's a fun little twist on a basic, Mexican comfort food and it makes a massive difference. So this placed turned out to be our second choice for Mexican that day, our other spot was closed but we were far from disappointed. We rolled there five deep all on a mission for some bomb tacos. We immediately noticed they were a bit understaffed, I believe it was three of them running the whole operation. The lady at the counter was trying work drive thru, take phone orders and handle the counter. That made ordering very slow. The food also took a while to come out. But hey, once the food arrived it was all good. I ordered two Carne tacos and one pollo along with a pollo quesadilla. Don't judge! Everything was fantastic! Heard alot about this spot....what is not mentioned enough is the ordering process....access to drive threw service is a bit odd.....so be careful. The Carne Asada Burrito was huge but greasy. The Birria Tacos were good...but other venues have a better flavor.....IMO.....Everyone has their FAV MEX place.....including me....when they are all close or on the sma e level as far as taste...the other factors come into play. Ok so I've driven past this place for years and never get compelled to stop but I have heard this place is BOMB so we went today. Drive thru only due to COVID which is fine but the access to the drive thru lane is three cars deep and I was half in the lane on 29 for 5 minutes today. Luckily the scare was worth it. I asked for recommendations and they you g lady said the Cali Burrito & No. 6 so we got those two. The No. 6 is alright.... but the Cali Burrito was INCREDIBLE! First time visiting and it wasn't bad. We bought 2 of the asada big burrito and added Pico de Gallo. I wasn't impressed with the food or flavor. It was fairly neutral flavors honestly. The burritos were over half full of beans and rice. Minimal "steak", what it really was was pot roast. I didn't see any Pico de Gallo in one of them, and it basically fell apart once I got through half of it. I really wanted to like this place, but I left pretty disappointed. I'm giving this place two stars for the staff's friendliness. The drive-thru time was pretty long, which is understandable given it was kind of dinner rush hour. However, it seemed like the lady working the drive thru window was either new or maybe just didn't know the menu too well. I ordered a carnitas burrito and I informed her I didn't want tomatoes or lettuce. She said that no lettuce came in the burrito and she said they would make it with no tomatoes. I brought it home and both ingredients were in it, plus the tortilla was so soggy that the burrito just fell apart pretty much instantly. She warned me that it would be 10-15 minutes, but... a) it definitely didn't take that long and b) worth the wait anyway if it was!! Standard two-tortilla shell, and on the larger side. I got takeout so the tortillas were a little soggy (my fault) but the seasoning was perfect, the fish was fresh, blackened and flavorful. The medium salsa was delicious. Note- I added guac, which also could've enhanced them. The rice was okay, nothing special, and the refried beans were set on top of a few tortilla chips and also unimpressive. The al pastor taco had a little too many onions and not enough pork, and came in smaller tortillas. All tacos came with lime wedges which was nice. Overall, I'd come back for the fish tacos. Yelp didn't fail me on this hidden gem. Thank fellow Yelpers!!! Small but awesomely quirky with cool tacky sequined paintings as decor. Asked a customer "what's good?", without hesitation said, "Everything!" then described an unbelievable burrito that was a must but I went with the Taco Rock (3 beef tacos) for $6. Woman behind the counter was new but very nice. Owner was there cooking and was SUPER friendly and called my "honey" and "baby doll" a few times while talking to me. She apologized for the counter help in training but seriously, couldn't tell she was new; service was fast and very very friendly. It was a great place with people who obviously cared and loved what they did. The tacos were DELICIOUS! Fresh ingredients and even homemade crunchy corn taco shells! Authentic Mild sauce is fresh and delicious to top off your tacos, and not at all spicy. First time trying Taco Rock 29. You cannot miss the building with its unique painted Mexican decor. I used the drive-thru which circle from south side (order) to north side (pick-up). There is a neat screened in patio. I ordered Cali-burrito and my wife ordered the vegetarian burrito, chips and salsa. Very friendly service and quick. Now to the food: Cali-burrito was excellent with fresh and favorable taste (steak, cheese, potatoes, etc.) and it has a taste that is very good. I put the hot sauce (appeared to be house made) which took the favor to a even nicer level. My wife veggie-burrito was fresh as well - a little blander (my wife said) than my Cali... but that is just the bean taste coming through. When we pulled up to this little place we were a little worried because their were no other cars in the parking lot and only 1 truck at the drive in window. Sometimes that's a bad sign, but I was hopeful with the previous reviews. We went in and there was only 2 lady's working. They were very helpful, got us started with a drink. Things suddenly picked up and they started getting busier. Glad we got there when we did!! Our food was wonderful! And they had Spicy carrots which are hard to find! Cons: there seemed to be a lot of confusion about when to pay. Customers ordered at the counter and wanted to pay then. Worker took orders and told customers to pay after they ate. The whole time it was only the 2 workers and it was mid day Saturday. They had the lobby, the drive in plus call in orders and grub hub was there for a pick up order. Review Time: Taco Rock 29 I've heard and have read so many reviews about this authentic Hispanic, hole in the wall, must try destination. We were absolutely starving today, so is this place as phenomenal as everyone says? The young lady working the counter was super sweet and very helpful at making suggestions of what to eat, especially since everything I asked for they didn't have. She even gave us a sample of the daily made pico, which was some of the best pico I've ever had. I really enjoyed the spicy hot salsa they serve, which had the perfect amount of heat for me. He had the number 8 (2 flour soft shell chicken tacos and two crunchy beef tacos). The chicken had great flavor, but the beef seemed to be lacking a little seasoning. For me, I had 3 corn barbacoa tacos with the side of beans and rice. I really enjoyed the rice, which had great flavor and chunks of chicken. The beans were refried; and refried beans all taste the same to me. The barbacoa meat had phenomenal flavor and super tender. I really enjoyed my fresh lime, pico, and hot salsa on the tacos. Now the big decision is: Do I prefer El Asador or Taco Rock? I have to say El Asador has my heart, because of the fresh veggie and salsa bar they have.
