This was my first time to Taco Rico. I liked the ambiance and traditional Mexican decor, soft mariachi jalisciense playing, a clean dining room... Open for breakfast and all day, Taco Rico offers various kinds of tacos, flautas, tortas, burritos, panchos, parrilladas, and a few plates that can vary such as carne guisada. I chose the combo #1 that included 4 tacos (mine were of deshebrada on corn tortillas with all the garnishes), a dressed baked potato (butter, sour cream and bacon bits), a bowl of beans (simple), and a drink. It was a great price for what I got. The food was served fresh and hot. Order at the counter, and then fill your own drink and set your number on the table. A server will bring your food to the table. There are two parts to the dining room, one large enough for groups and a narrower portion divided by a wall with cut-outs. Ordered the bistec tacos and a full baked potato. The tacos were on the dry side, definitely not what you get in Mexico. But the potato is fantastic... loaded with cheese and butter. The bean soup they bring to you was also good. One negative thing is if you want a glass of water. The water cup is like 6 ounces, and there is no water option at the soft drink machine. If you're visiting McAllen & craving some crispy tripas taco, then stop by Taco Rico & get your fixing. It was my first time dining. I ordered the 4 corn taco meal (2 bistek & 2 tripas). The meal comes with a cheesy baked potato, potato soup, & a fountain drink. Tripas is an upcharge. I was excited & nervous to eat the tacos. Excited cause I rarely find crispy tripas & nervous that it wouldn't live up to my expectations.. & well, the tacos were delicious! I went back for a second order of the extra crispy tripas tacos! In one sitting, I had 5 tripas & 1 bistek. The bistek looks like cheap beef & there was no distinctive flavor.. My dining companion disagree & enjoyed her bistek flour tacos. Tripas is beef liver. If not cooked properly, the texture & taste can be unappetizing. Taco Rico season and fries the tripas. I like that it's crispy with a satisfying crunch. Visiting for work and a coworker sent me to El Rodeo to get tripas tacos but they were closed. Headed back to hotel and found Taco Rico and checked it out. Looked like a fast food drive thru type place. Surprisingly they have tacos tripas on the menu. The full order is 6 tacos but they have a half order which I got. FANTASTIC! So crispy and delicious and tortillas were fresh. Loved them and recommend this to all tripa lovers. read more

Decided to finally try this place after mixed reviews. Went through the drive thru. Lady on the intercom couldn't hear me and vise Versa. Finally got to the window and I asked her to repeat the order. She was missing 3 tacos. So I added them and paid. Sat for a good 7 minutes. She hands me a potato and the tacos. So I ask for the rest of my order and she looks confused. Reminded her of my pirata, beans, drink... she gives me the pirata and beans then stares blankly at me again. JESUS! I felt like I was on the old MTV show Boiling Point. I didn't even ask for salsa, I knew it would really confuse her. From the outside, the place looks like a typical fast food franchise, not to mention the fact its located right next to a McDonalds. You walk in and you get that "neighborhood" feeling. It's a sunday afternoon and the place has plenty of people inside and the staff are working hard to keep things going. Now, take note Mexican cuisine is a new frontier to me. I just recently discovered that the hard taco and american/chipotle burrito is not the same as the standard burrito. In fact, what I've noticed is that I rarely see the word "burrito" in most menus in the "Valley." I come up to the counter and I'm still not sure what to get, so I decide to go with what I observe to be the norm which is a taco combo. Soft corn tacos, a soda, and baked potato for $7.99 (plus tax). They take your order, then they bring the order to you. A slight side step from "fast food", but I would lke to think this means they are preparing the food as ordered which I find reassuring. I take my drink in the form of a styrofoam cup and find a table. A bustling lady roams the room carrying and order and yelps out the order number in spanish. Another one goes and offers a free side dish of bean soup. I found the bean soup quite tasty, and if you forgive the nostalgia...it makes me think of cowboys on the range having a meal. Taste: The tacos got the job done, though I found the meats a little on the dry side ( I chose chicken and pork). However they had two sauce bottle close by, the wonderful green sauce and red sauce. I did make the mistake of getting "everything" on the baked potato which included butter and sour cream. I recommend choosing one or the other. On the dessert menu, they have choco flan which is something I recently discovered and will have to try on my next visit, as well as the other dishes. read more

They don't get the order right. They gave me the wrong order. I ordered two potato and egg tacos. They gave me bacon and egg. When i called to complain they advised me to go back and they would fix it. Arrived there and the cashier who can barley speak english tells me i had to take them bacon tacos for the exchange of the ones I originally ordered. "The manager said so" she says. Now i had to go back home once again and retrieve the bacon and egg tacos. I took them back and was complaining to the manager herself for making me go back yet again. She looked at the tacos and threw them away in the trash. She looked at me like i was an alien or something and goes and gets the cashier because she did not understand me. A good little taco place. It is definitely authentic and reminds me of what El Zarape was like 10 years ago before it over extended itself. The tacos are good. I like to get trompo and molleja(extra crispy). If I was in this part of town more I would eat here more often. Also on the plus side, they haven't raised their prices in several years. My family is from San Antonio and I keep hearing how the food is so great in the valley. They must not be talking about this place! Food tastes like it's all been cross contaminated! Beans have a strong onion taste and smell, barbacoa tastes like every meat they serve here. Absolutely disgusting! Previously, I had stayed away because they discovered maggots in their beans (a few years ago) but I wanted to give it a chance because it has a drive thru, close by and I have young children.
