three tacos on a paper plate
    David S.

The food was decent overall. Honestly the service was pretty slow. I don't blame the waitress because she seemed to also be the cashier but she only came when needed. I ordered a michelada and it wasn't great. The mug felt warm...the mugs should always be chilled. Then they lined the lip of the glass with too much tajin...I tasted more the tajin than the beer or mix. I then ordered a regular bottle Dos XX and it felt room temperature...it wasn't even close to being cold. On to the food...I ordered the combo of 2 birria tacos w/ consome and 2 tacos de trompo. This was my first time tasting birria...I'd go somewhere else. They look good, but I tasted more of the toasted tortilla than the meat or consome. I did dip the tacos in the consome but on their own...I only tasted tortilla. The trompo tacos were on the other hand, quite nice. Loved the pineapple in them. I give the stars because my wife had the sincronizada and she loved it. Had great flavor! Their salsas were also great. Might give it another try and order something else....

I'm here in a business trip; originally born and raised in San Antonio so I know good barbacoa. I did a search online for Best barbacoa and TripAdvisor brought this place up. While I can't say they are the best in the area, since I've not tried others, I can say they are delicious. The only thing I'd ask the next time is to drain a little more fat. I ordered the 5 taco plate and my last two were rather soaked in the fat. That said, they were good; at least my tacos weren't falling apart. The hot sauce is great. They have a table, oil based hot sauce which is supposed to be richer and hotter. It is and is good. If you're looking for typical breakfast tacos like potato and eggs or anything eggs, this isn't the place, but meats, yes. Con provecho!

Like other reviewers have mentioned, the biggest draw in to this taqueria are the homemade tortillas. I have been here twice and both times the tacos were ok. The combo is basically the order of tacos and a drink, no charro beans (you have to pay extra) and no potato. I ordered the beans the first time and was very disappointed because they had a lot of the grease on top which I had to scoop out to eat the beans. But to my dismay I didn't find many beans just mostly pieces of weenies, so it was weenie soup more than charro beans. On my second visit I ordered the potato (on the menu it says it's topped with butter, cheese, and sour cream). The only toppings I got were cheese and black pepper. I will return for to go orders because I can customize my tacos with pico de gallo and a good salsa at home. But it is a bit disappointing to eat at the restaurant.

I love this place. Passing by this area and found this tiny local Taco restaurant. I love it! The ambience is casual and family style. The server is very friendly, no much English speaking, but the menu shows everything clearly, which is very helpful. The pictures on the menu shows exactly what I get, honest!

Food is amazing. The carnitas on the weekend are the best, but get there early, they run out fast!!

A Hidden Gem for Mexican Seafood -- Don't Sleep on This Place!…read more As a traveler from California in town for a swim meet, I was on the hunt for good Mexican seafood and stumbled upon La Costa Grill. Based on the reviews, I had decent expectations -- but this place blew them out of the water. The ratings honestly don't do it justice. From the moment we walked in, the hospitality was warm and genuine. We were greeted by the hostess and seated right away, even during the lunch rush. Then came a wonderful surprise: our server brought out a mini skillet of the most incredible black refried beans for dipping, alongside four salsas ranging from mild to hot, all served with tostadas -- compliments of the house. Back in California, you're lucky to get one salsa, let alone refried beans as a free starter. It immediately set the tone for the meal. Our server was knowledgeable and genuinely helpful with recommendations. We ended up sharing a lunch portion of paella, an octopus taco, and a fish ceviche tostada -- and every single dish delivered. The octopus taco was a standout; served over a layer of refried beans, it was a flavor combination I didn't know I needed. The ceviche tostada was fresh and bright, and the paella was satisfying and well-seasoned. I also have to give our server extra credit for her transparency -- she mentioned upfront that the paella leans heavier on rice than seafood. That kind of honesty is rare and really appreciated. We ordered it anyway, and we were glad we did. If you're visiting McAllen and want authentic, flavorful Mexican seafood with outstanding service and hospitality, La Costa Grill needs to be on your list. I'll absolutely be returning before I head back home.

Another recent discovery here in Mission, TX. This small restaurant is off the main road in a strip…read moremall and seats maybe 40-50 people. The menu is simple but offers some variety. We were served a small plate with warm, crisp tortilla chips that were sprinkled with a seasoned powder (not Tajin) that was pretty salty. I shook off the powder as it made them too salty, even for my tastes. The greenish salsa was also a little salty but VERY TASTY and had a little kick. From where we were seated I observed the cook blackening the tomatillos on a grill in the kitchen. These were the backbone of this salsa. If it weren't quite so salty I'd be raving about them. I ordered a platter with three main items - Lonches, Sincronizada and Street tacos. All three items must be filled with the same protein, so I chose Birria. Other choices include pollo, bistek, trompo and fajita. The birria was nice and juicy and well seasoned. The Lonches were larger pieces of bread than I'm accustomed to finding, especially in Progresso, where they are quite popular. They were also toasted it seemed instead of being soft and pillowy. The street tacos were excellent with toppings of red onion and cilantro. The Sincronizada was something I'd never eaten before and was a smaller version of the one they serve as a main course. It was not the traditional dish which comes with slices of ham, but it was pretty good filled with birria. Charro beans were also served if I remember correctly. I ate one of the lonches, one of the tacos (the other I gave to my son) and the Sincronizada and was stuffed; leftovers for a later meal. The wife ordered the full version of a Sincronizada filled with pollo (chicken) and wasn't able to even finish half of it. It was huge! They brought us two bottles of salsa - a green salsa and a reddish/orange salsa. Both were pretty hot by my standards and the reddish one would absolutely hurt you if you added too much. So... a word to the wise... caution advised. They were quite tasty. All in all we will come back. I particularly want to try out some of their other proteins and their fajitas.

I'm a huge migas fan and never thought to try chilaquiles. This place did not disappoint. I added eggs, chorizo and avocado with half green and half red sauce. I was surprised to get each adding in an individual stack. I managed to get my egg yolk over the avocado and chorizo. The food was really good, just not what I expected. The flautas de papa were a great buy. Instead of using a corn or flour tortilla to mop up my plate, I was able to use the flauta and with the papa in it, they were like little sponges soaking up all the leftovers
