Ever since leaving Austin, the only place I bother eating tamales is in all cities, Queen, NY (https://www.yelp.com/biz/yolandas-tamales-new-york?sort_by=date_desc). Otherwise, the "tamales" in the DC area are so MID. The tamales around here are of the Central American variety and, they're fine. But sometime they're steamed in a square shape and wrapped in a banana leaf. Of if you can find an "authentic" Mexican style tamale wrapped in a corn husk, they're something off about the Masa to filling ratio as well as the flavor profile with the DC versions often being too sweet requiring them to be drenched in some type of sauce. That's why when I'm back in TX, I load up on bbq and tamales. I was told by all the locals in the greater McAllen / Edinburg area that Delia's makes the best tamales...and they were right! Delia's is a local chain with outposts around the Rio Grande Valley. I visited a few of them, and they're all quite similar. The interior is more reminiscent of 1990's style fast food with basic plastic booths with a few older style tables/chairs. The lightning is dim florescent, with muted dull color tones. But you're here for the food, not the decor. I ordered six of the spicy pork and six of the bean/cheese/jalapeno flavors. Awww man, can I tell you...these were ah-mazing! They arrived wrapped in foil and steaming hot. Unwrap each one, and the texture of the masa is soft without being mushy. And the filling of the meat as well as the veggie varieties are perfectly spiced without being overly salty. Do yourself a favor and get the "green salsa." It's a mix of guac and salsa Verde. All you have to know, is the green salsa pairs so well with the tamales. Just kind of bummed that post-COVID, the self-service salsa bar is now closed. I asked one of the employees about this, and she mentioned it's highly unlikely it will ever return. I obviously couldn't eat all 12 in one sitting, so I took the majority back to the hotel, where I enjoyed them for lunch over the next few days. I even stopped in here before my flight back to DC and immediately froze a bunch for reheating in the next few months. Fast friendly service, and loved how there was a lady out in the dining room, demonstrating the art of working the masa, and then individually filling and then wrapping each tamale...by HAND! I was sure to drop in a few bucks in the tip jar, since you should acknowledge all the work required to produce a quality product at such affordable prices. read more

The tamales are smaller than your "normal" tamales, but they're packed with just as much flavor and deliciousness. If you've never tried these you have to! My 87 yr old mom is blind, and is only 95 lbs. I was running late, and in a hurry, so, I got some tamales from another place in McAllen, TX . Well, that didn't go well, as soon as she took a bite, she said "these Tamales aren't Delia's ". I went ahead and said "sure, they are ". She said "they are too greasy, not enough meat, and too much masa". You can't visit the valley without stopping at delias! The tamales are AMAZING. They are made fresh daily and melt In your mouth! There are a wide variety of flavors. So everyone in the family can find something they will like! I suggest ordering multiple and sharing with others to try as many as possible. My person favorite were the spicy chicken and cheese, the chicken is shredded and melts in your mouth. Second I liked the cream cheese, bean and jalapeño. Tamales for days! Everyone who knows tamales knows about Delia's. We got here just before closing one evening, and they were out of a lot of their usual options. That did not deter us! Everything had to be purchased by at least the half dozen, and warmed. Challenge accepted! We got half a dozen of the sweet cheese dessert tamales, half a dozen of the spicy chicken, and half a dozen of the bean and cheese. When we got to work and offered tamales to our local team they declined initially. When we said we got them from Delia's they changed their tune! Delia's used to be out of a home in my old neighborhood and the tamales used to be tasty. Now that it's a chain, they are not that good, especially for the price. There's also no pollo in green salsa tamales unless you want cheese with that. Why??? They tend to be dry or greasy and the taste just isn't there anymore. Wish they had stayed small. Since there is no competition, I doubt they'll be motivated to improve. Luckily, I've found some moms that make them out of their home. Hopefully they won't franchise any time soon. read more

The way tamales should be. Thin masa with red chili mixed in for flavor and just the right amount of meaty goodness. The masa and meat filling should be in the right proportion and this place gets it right. Tamales come in either 1/2 or 1 dozen. Prices are good. I'm not a tamale person. In fact, before I moved to the RGV I had only had canned tamales. Living down here I have experienced my share of tamales and the tamales from Delia's are by far the best. The masa is thin and flavorful and the fillings are generous and tasty. We were visiting my family up north and my aunt and uncle ordered tamales at a restaurant and were raving about the taste. We took one bite and agreed that they must try Delia's so we brought some on our next trip. They now request tamales each time we visit. Delia's has now become a tradition for my family in the RGV as well as up north! Our favorite is the spicy pork, but my family liked the regular pork, chicken and the sweet tamales. From what I hear, Delia's is a well-established tamale source in the Rio Grande Valley. When we went, the line for the drive-thru went out of the parking lot and into the street where a constable had to direct traffic. It's clear they have a good reputation. Inside was completely empty with plenty of tables to accommodate customers. If you buy a dozen tamales, they are less than a dollar each. I bought two flavors, six-each, to-go and mentioned that I wanted to eat some here and take the rest home. They gave me a to-go bag, a styrofoam plate, and some plastic utensils. Tamales, if you haven't tried them, are kind-of small, so eating 4 for lunch is just right for a gal, probably 6 for a guy. I was not raised on tamales, so I'm not an expert, but I find Delia's tamales to be tasty, tender, and moist. Not soggy nor crumbly. Their horchata--dispensed like a fountain soda--was rich and flavorful. If I get a craving for tamales again, Delia's will probably be the first place I'll look. read more

I placed two separate orders to be delivered, one to my mom and the other to my daughter on the same day. I got confirmation of both orders and then one shipping confirmation. I started with an email, no response. Followed by an inquiry on their website, no response. Phone numbers didn't work. Finally reached someone and they gave me the 'home' number. I called, they took my order number and phone number and said they would call me back. No call. I called again and then was told my order was not filled and they didn't know why and they would still ship them but they would not arrive until after Christmas. Wow. I really wanted to like this place, but unfortunately it did not meet expectations. The cream cheese and jalapeño had no jalapeños in it -- it was just a stick of cream cheese in the middle and they kind of fall apart. The corn ones are really sweet. The sauces were the only things that made it good!
