This place doesn't disappoint, I love everything, from the clean modern yet inviting ambiance to the café de olla and the Chilaquiles! I ordered the Mini Reketes: chilaquiles divorciados (red and green salsa) which come with shredded chicken. I added queso panela asado and chicharrón with mixed salsa... DELICIOSO! And to top everything else, the service was kind and friendly, as soon as I let Nancy know it was my first time here they walked me through the options and what they are known for. El Itacate has some of my favorite Salvadoran and Mexican food. From pupusas to chilaquiles, to tacos, delicious options for breakfasts, lunch and dinner, they won't disappoint. My favorite is the Tacos Llorarás (you will cry taco) which features a handmade corn tortillas stuffed with a chile relleno made of jalapeño and cream cheese, plus a flavorful beef birria. Add your garnish and salsa of choice, and if the heat of the chile doesn't make you cry, you will eventually cry if you cannot return soon. It's that good! This restaurant was amazing! It starts with how welcoming and helpful the staff is. Then the food. Oh my goodness! They were perfectly busy showing this was the spot to be but still places to sit and eat. The restaurant was clean, with the employees constantly checking on guests and cleaning up as one left. Had a chance to go out and try this place finally. I ordered the Gallito which consisted of 2 eggs to your liking chilaquiles in red or green salsa 2 strips of bacon and 2pancakes. The portion size was just right for me not to much and not too little. The flavor of the chilaquiles was very good and they were nice and crunchy. Definitely a hidden gem. Craving "REAL" Mexican food, decided to drive to the Pharr location and it was worth it. It's a very different concept for the Valley but the formula works. The menu is not huge but diverse enough to want one of each. My spouse chose the Caldo Tlalpeño with HOMEMADE corn tortillas (yes, it's over 100F but well worth it) and a Gordita. I chose 3 pupusas and they were huge. To drink I had their Lemonade with Cucumber and it was deliciously sweet. Food and drinks came to $38 or so and then the tip. The service was impeccable, everyone was very friendly and helpful. I thought it was well worth it. The fillings on my pupusas were amazing and delicious. Best part?? First of all, let me tell you about those Chilaquiles, They are Huge!! If you don't eat much you can share ir with another person, They come with frijoles, Chicharron, Chicken, and eggs. You can style them too if you don't want too much stuff on it, They enchiladas are good but couldn't see them because of too many potatoes they put on top, That doesn't bother me at all, I love potatoes! They don't have servers you just go and order your food and then take a seat. They bring your food to you and thats about it, The staff are really friendly and nice and if you have any questions about your food they don't hesitate to help you. While I was at the location in McAllen I was unable to find their yelp. The service was fast and the girls who took our order were very friendly. The restaurant was clean and it wasn't too busy when we got there so there was plenty of options for us to choose to sit at. I give my total experience a 4, but I rate my food a 3.5. I got the chilaquiles plate with chicarron prensado en salsa verde but I wasn't a fan of the salsa. The taste was too bitter and lacked spiciness for my personal liking. The chicarron was cooked well and had a nice texture and the beans were yummy too. I liked that the chilaquiles had plenty of cheese and crema! The best chilaquiles I had while I spent three weeks in McAllen. I'm a chilaquiles lover, so I have a reference point. The ladies behind the counter were very friendly as well. Where should I start. I guess the beginning is a good place. I walked into this establishment and was immediately greeted by two very nice ladies. This was my first time here and they could clearly tell. I had already looked at the menu before hand and had my eyes set on getting the Atacate plate, which the lady behind the counter said that would offer the best taste of most of the menu. And boy it did not disappoint. The crunchy/soft taco was flavorful and that avocado making its special guest appearances was just icing on the cake. There was another taco that had what seemed to be a Chile relleno inside of it. The Gordita was great, but the pupusa my goodness was perfect! Their sauces that are served up with the dishes only increase the experience and the spice. The green sauce was good, orange sauce was better. Combined was like a "fusion HA" from Dragonball Z. Seriously....the best chilaquiles (besides my wife's) out there. One...I saw a photo of their chilaquiles on Instagram and immediately it drew my attention...they look amazing just in the photo. So I convinced my wife to go...so first off the food LOOKS appetizing. We had the chilaquiles, enchiladas, a few pupusas, pancakes, and a simple chorizo and eggs. Everything was spot on! Nice simple flavors...the pancakes taste homemade. The flour tortillas taste just like your mom made them. The enchiladas were the perfect combination of potatoes, crema, lettuce, salsa...they were great. But the highlight are the chilaquiles..where do I start or where do I stop? They have a black bean base, with the tortillas...you can do green or red salsa, with cheese, chicken, chicharrón prensado, avocado, and eggs the way you want. Loved it... loved it...the serving is huge to begin with. The sauce is evenly spread all throughout, you don't feel like it's just sauced on top of the tortilla chips. Every bite you can do a little of everything (tortillas, chicken, cheese)...or just do one at a time. I found myself scraping the bottom of the plate the meal was so delicious... I found myself savoring bites of chicharrón w/ black beans...or egg w/ avocado...or the tortilla chips with the salsa...all on one dish. That being said...the food was amazing and the ambience matched it. Service is quick...it has more of a fast food feel which is amazing considering the quality of the food. And it's quite cheap! This is the fourth time I've come to this place. I'm from out of town and when we visit the in-laws I like to come by. Itacate has been very consistent with flavor and portion size. The Chilaquiles Reketes (I'll admit were love at first bite) are the reason I visit. The salsa is not too spicy, layers of chips, cheese, and crema topped with chicharrones, avocado and an egg. I got two eggs on this occasion on the smaller portion... the larger portion can easily feed two people. The service has always been warm, welcoming, and professional. The dining area is intimate and pretty laid back. I really enjoy this place... give it a try I think you'll dig it too. read more

Las Pupusas del Itacate is such a cute brunch spot for a date or a girls day/with friends. This is not a vegan or even vegetarian friendly place, everything has beef or pork, eggs, bacon and cheese. I loved the decor and concept of the place, the wall with the roosters looks so beautiful (except more quotes are written on this wall too) and although it's simple it just feels PERFECT. The quotes some people have written are actually pretty funny, they lead you all around the room including the hallway to the restrooms and kitchen area. I believe this is a great Instagram-able place and perfect spot for foodie bloggers to take photos. The food however was disappointing, it didn't have much flavor, I went in thinking the food would be distinctive but it was not. The only thing I highly highly highly recommend is the orange juice!! It has to be naturally squeezed because it sure tasted like it, seriously the best thing I've drank in forever! The place was packed but we thankfully got the last table when we were there. They messed up our order when they brought it to the table, we ordered 3 different kinds of pupusas and got the same kind so that was just disappointing too. The menu was ok. Another complaint I would have is how loud the place was, it was SO HARD to hear anything, as first time goers we had a few questions and wanted to ask the person at the register. She kept laughing at us because we couldn't hear what she was saying and she couldn't hear us...okay then. So kinda bad service after the mixup of food too.
