I've learned that ordering "just enough" at Taco Maya is a rookie mistake. Every plate that comes out looks like it was intended for a family of four, and somehow you still find yourself trying to finish it because it's that good. The guacamole is exactly what you hope fresh guacamole will be, and the queso is dangerously addictive without trying to be over the top. Everything tastes fresh, the portions are almost comically generous, and you never leave wondering if you got your money's worth. The atmosphere somehow pulls off a neat trick. It's lively enough that the place feels full of energy, but it's never so loud that you're shouting across the table. I could carry on a normal conversation without a problem, while the table next to us sounded like they might've been celebrating a quinceañera--and somehow it all just worked. Places like this are why chain restaurants have such a hard time impressing me anymore. Great food, huge portions, friendly staff, and consistently good every time I've been there. Chose this place for lunch because I'd been to the South loop location and loved the food. Had the Taco Birria, Tinga Chicken taco, and Signature taco, all of which were amazing. My husband and I dined in for a Friday dinner and we came at the perfect time, 6pm. No line and only 2 other customers were there. Once we ordered there was a massive influx of customers, it was great to see this place was so busy! I noticed there was advertising for a free taco on Mondays and $1 taco Tuesdays. This location is spacious and is kept clean. The music was at the perfect volume, you can hear it but it doesn't overpower your experience. Very much background music where you don't need to shout in order to have a conversation. The staff member that helped us was friendly and patient. We were undecided about what we wanted so it took us a few extra minutes to order. Once everything was ready it was brought over to our table. When dining in, you're provided a complimentary basket of chips and salsa. For my dinner I went with the 3 taco plate that comes with rice and beans. I chose the ground beef, paneer and chicken tinga tacos. Everything was flavorful and the portion was satisfying. The rice and beans continue to be a miss for me, but I continue to order it. IMHO the rice is way too bland. The refried beans for me tasty old. My husband thought they were fine but idk. I always say I'll stop ordering their rice and beans but then do it anyway.. I had a wonderful time visiting here with my mom a few weeks ago. We happened to be driving through and stopped in for an early dinner and I'm so glad we did. My mom is typically not a fan of guac but gave theirs a try and fell in love with it instantly. The whole restaurant is a vibe, with beautiful murals all over the walls with butterflies. The day we were there, the ac had stopped working, and we felt so bad for the employees who were clearly feeling the heat in the kitchen. They kept apologizing to everyone for the heat, and you couldn't help but be struck how nice they were, even when sweating, and still working and cooking. The fajitas they made and fried ice cream were some of the best I've ever had, and I'll definitely be back for more.....I'm hoping they fixed the ac quickly! read more

This taco spot has the cutest decor which makes you feel like you're somewhere nicer and warmer than Illinois. I like that they serve you complimentary chips and salsa. The salsa was warm and tasty however the chips were overly seasoned with what looked like seasoned salt. I ordered the two taco plate and a drink and so did my Mom. Their grilled chicken taco was good just a little dry but having their self serve salsa bar helped! Their carnitas were decent even though there weren't cooked well done as requested. Their rice was just ok and the amount of beans they served was very little compared to the rice. I tried quite a few of their salsas. Their mild avocado one was very runny and tasted like water. My favorite was the salsa verde. My Mom liked the jalapeño one the best. Overall, the meal we had was kind of pricy at over $40. This is the 3rd Taco Maya location I've been to and I'm here for it! The food tastes the same at every location and it DOES NOT disappoint. I had my usual shrimp and signature taco, while my daughter enjoyed her steak. Literally everything tasted the same which is great quality control on the owners part. I would definitely not call this an authentic joint, but it's not a chipotle either. Their tacos are different and in a great way. I can't seem to venture out to the other tacos, though I've had friends who've had the pork belly and several other and they are equally as good. You get what you pay for. They are not small tacos and their produce tastes really fresh. And as same with the other taco mayas, it is clean and have really great service. Whenever I've walked into one, I'm always greeted nicely by the workers and even noticed that the workers make a concerted effort to say goodbye to people leaving. My only complaint is that their menu is so large that it's hard to see in their screen, wish they had some paper menus. Otherwise would definitely recommend and will keep coming back. read more

Their signature taco is the best taco I've ever had. Point blank. End of story. And I live in Berwyn / Cicero right down the street from the best authentic Mexican spots around. But it's just that good. Their avocado salsa is amazing. Their fries and chips with the red crack cocaine spicy garnish on top is out of this world. Their strawberry orchata is the ONLY orchata I can drink more than a couple sips of ... only think lacking is service cleanliness in the restaurant. I was so excited to try a new Mexican restaurant and I finally got there. At Taco Maya I was greeted promptly, but had difficulty in reading the signage over the cash register for the menu. (too much jammed on the screen). The cashier did give me a paper menu in which I selected my lunch. They had a lunch special for $9.99 for 3 tacos with rice and beans. The selection of tacos offered for this special is limited! I ordered one chicken taco and two ground beef tacos with cilantro and onion and sour cream. I repeated my order at least three times. When I was paying for my food, I realized it was a charge for the restaurant. It was called the restaurant charge. The cashier explain to me. It was a charge to offset the high price and the food instead of charging higher prices for the food, and changing the prices. There's no signage explaining this. I was given a plastic cup for my beverage, a small basket of chips, a warmed salsa, and access to the nicely stocked salsa nicely bar. Many were very taste. hot salsa. My food was brought promptly... the chicken was dry and tasteless and the beef tacos were also tasteless. I could not find or taste the onion I requested, nor was there any sour cream as I ordered, simply put I ate three tasteless tacos for $13. What a waste of money, The restaurant is clean and attractive. The bathroom smells like a sewage leak. I wouldn't be back. read more

It was one of those we don't care how much we spend nights. The tacos cost around $4-$5 each and they have combos also. So you can get 3 tacos for $15. They have other menu items like burritos and Tortas also. But stick with the Tacos. The best value is the fried ice cream dessert -$7 and shareable. They have a $9.99 lunch special and different daily taco specials. My wife going to be getting the $9.99 special which is includes rice and beans. We had a restaurant fee taked on to our bill of 3%. But was okay with it since we had a party of 8 and made a huge mess. (My perspective on those fees is that - a restaurant can charge them - but the Tip is just going to be lower - so figure out how you want to allocate your revenues. ) Service (A+) So you order at the register and they bring the food out to you. The individuals at the register were super nice and informative. They knew the menu and helped out with suggestions. They also bussed our table numerous times. And kept our tab open. They also got our food out fast - right when it was made. Which is what we wanted - vs waiting for everything to be put together. We had kids with us and this is the right approach. Plus it's not fine dining. Brought out the apps and then while finishing up the apps the food started coming out. Perfect timing. I can not stress how important it is to keep a tab open like that. We had individuals who had not been there before and didn't know what they wanted. We probably ordered $75 more by having an open tab. The day before we went to a place we had never been and they closed our tab and lost out. Since we convinced ourselves it was too much of a hassle to order more. Not here. Food (A+) All the food was amazing and we ordered a ton of food so here are highlights. These are all the A+ get them Everytime we come items - fries a la Mexicana - so good! It is Mexican style waffle fries. - Nashville hot cauliflower- I didnt get this but a lot of folks at the table did and they kept ordering more - signature- super good - Dorado - perfect combination of flavors - Fried Ice cream - awesome shareable dessert My advice would be to order the vegetarian or fish based tacos - this seem to be the best options. Advice for owners - reduce the menu options - I think that they reviews are coming from individuals who try the place the first time and don't order the signature items. I would stick to Tacos - it's Taco Maya. Keep it simple with fewer high quality items. Feel like the menu has too many options. I figured I would try the place just to see how it was. I have to admit I did not expect a lot, but the people in line that I asked if they have been there before and how they liked it had very positive things to say and even gave recommendations. So we ordered a taco platter and enchilada. It came with chips and salsa for dining inside. We had the espresso Horchata. And regular horchata The enchilada we opted to get a side of french fries (the seasoning on it is very good) The food is very fresh and you can taste that the chips have a nice seasoning on it and the salsa does have a little kick to it. They have a nice little help yourself salsa bar Most of them were fantastic there. We did not get the hotter ones because we don't like hot sauce Everything was great and in fact, I've been back there a second time already and I see myself becoming a regular customer Service is great. I eat here often...oops, I mean takeout. The service is very good. I agree with the good and the bad comments. Most of the tacos are just okay. I do really like the chicken tikka. The salsa bar is not watery and offers decent variety. I like the salsa that comes with the chips and salsa but I'd rather have no seasoning on the chips...less sodium, I assume. I like al pastor tacos but I don't think that theirs is authentic off the spit but just regular pork. That said, non-gringos should try the specialty tacos especially that chicken tikka which works well. And come on, they have a salsa bar so you can choose any of them and pretty much take as much as your conscience allows. It seems like a great place for an after-work get-together especially with the daily taco and drink specials. read more

We decided to dine at Taco Maya in Downers Grove on Saturday night based on the reviews, and the online menu and photos. The staff was very friendly and helpful, but that was about the only positive thing. For a Saturday night it was pretty empty. While the menu appears impressive, the food was mediocre. The menu itself is placed over the counter, instead of on the wall behind - obviously creating a very disruptive ordering process for customers placing the order, and those waiting in line. The person at the counter did realize this, and offered us a paper menu. They had a "special" on tacos, but not on all of them, and other than having it pointed out by the staff, we had no way of knowing (or remembering) which ones were on special. We ordered various types of tacos, which weren't bad, just not not worth the price. The salsa bar had a variety of salsas, all of which were watery. We ordered drinks (margaritas) which turned out to taste unpleasant and were grossly overpriced - served in little plastic cups. The clincher was a 3% "Restaurant Fee" added to the end of the receipt - which you only get to see *after* having paid it. The restaurant claims that they do this to offset rising costs, so that they don't have to raise menu prices - pretty sneaky and dumb. The receipt does have a disingenious message at the bottom (un)helpfully advising you that you can request to have it removed should you choose - but clearly after the fact. So I'm not sure who the positive reviews are from, because there was nothing 5-star about this place - except the one person at the counter who took our order and brought the food to our table. Definitely not worth a second visit - not even a first visit - for me. read more

I had the best shrimp tacos here . They were very juicy and full of flavor. My friend tried the enchiladas and said they were bomb. Everything was fresh and tasty.
