I was super bummed out by my dinner here tonight. I've been contemplating stopping in to try the food for over a year since we live close but was sorely disappointed by doing so. I Ordered 2 taco salads, one with the shrimp ceviche and the other with impossible beef. On the plus side the portions are huge but that's basically the only positive. My husbands taco salad had the shrimp ceviche and was super salty, so much so it was even unpalatable. My salad had the impossible beef which was rubbery and tasted lukewarm and probably quite old. Nope! I've been to a few Taco Del Mars in my life and this location is by far the worst. We keep giving them a chance, since we live close by, but we have never even been marginally satisfied after a visit. Others have pointed to the poor customer service but for me the downfall is the food. The fish is never fresh and you can tell because it's lukewarm and has tough pieces around the breading from sitting in the warmer for too long. Also, I believe it's mandatory for food workers to wear masks when working around food. Enter Taco Del Mar employee who for some reason thought it was a good idea to lean over the make line and stir food with a lowered mask. He proceeded to cover up after I entered the door but it makes you wonder what the situation looks like when no customers are in the store. We will not be going back, ever! read more

We actually eat here about once every other week. We usually get the burritos, and they are delicious. The taco salad shell was not my favorite but we have never been disappointed by anything else. It stunk. Literally. The restaurant had a horrible smell. There was only one girl working, and she was very slow. We were the first in line when they opened, and the line quickly grew to probably 10 people. It took her well over 10 minutes to prepare our two burritos. Several people in line walked out. The burritos were not bad, but I would have been better off if I didn't see the steak as she was making mine. It was really gross looking and floating in what looked like water. Overall it's a step up from Taco Bell or the likes. All-in-all it was decent with the exception of the smell. And we got our food to go. There's no way we could have eaten in that place. I stopped in here on my lunch break and ordered a taco salad and a chicken taco. The guy working was so slow and there was no one else in the restaurant at all! When I got back to work the juice from the chicken taco was all over the front seat of my car soaking into the seat. When i finally finished cleaning out my car, I tried the taco salad and to my surprise there was jalapenos all over it! I didn't ask for them. I asked how long it would take, and was told "when I get around to it, and you need to wait outside. Outside? Was excited to try this place because I heard some good things. Upon entering I see the person behind the counter preparing a to go order without wearing a face mask. I do d not say anything but when it came to my order I asked him to put it on and he rolled his eyes. I said I'm sorry to inconvenience you but I take my health seriously and in my line of work I have to take care of myself. He rolled his eyes and said "it is what it is" he waged his hands and put his mask on, he began to prep the order when another worker came back from a delivery with her face mask as a chin strap . She put her bag down and went straight to handle my food asking what I wanted in my burrito. I said I'm sorry but it doesn't look like you're taking health and safety seriously and walked out. I really love this taco del mar, food wise. it is clean and the food is always prepared well! But there is something about this taco del mar that has been bothering not just me, but other people I know who live in north end tacoma. The manager/owner there is a complete asshole to the employees. He will talk down to them in front of customers, leave on break when it's not busy to go sit, then come back when it gets busy again. He will get frustrated with the employees in front of customers in an angry tone, then become aggressive towards them. I've been seeing this for the past six years I've been going and it's gotten out of hand. it's sad to see the employees embarrassed in front of customers. It's also noticeable when there are continuously new employees because of the manager/owner being so mean to them. Talk about unnecessary employee neglect. read more

I strolled up here one night about 5 minutes before closing, desperately wanting a burrito, expecting to be turned away or to be treated like the a-hole I was for waiting that late to get dinner. The two guys that were working doing all the closing prep were amazingly nice to me, considering I'd just cramped their closing-on-time style. I got my burrito, fast as always and still tasting fresh even though I knew none of that stuff sitting out could be too terribly recent considering the hour. And as always, it took care of my need for lunch the next day! Taco Del Mar isn't my favorite, but the service I received when even I would not be poised to treat the last minute customers with as much of a smile as they had gets them five stars. For the price and the amount of food you get (two meals, easy) and the wonderfully awesome people who work there, they definitely get five stars. read more

I can't believe I lived in Tacoma for 8 months before discovering this place. I came for the vegan and vegetarian options and now I may never go elsewhere for a burrito. For being a chain the food is consistently good. I absolutely love the fish burrito! I know it's no California style burrito....but does the job! The staff is always very friendly and you see the same staff working there year after year.....not typical of most chain restaurants. Cheese yes. Habanero and chipotle sauce. Skip the mild. Lettuce and cilantro too. I've had I think all the fillings and the only one that didn't scratch the itch for me was the fish. Was over cooked. as other reviewers have said here on yelp... the manager (owner?) here just seems to be a micromanaging tyrant who treats his employees like crap in front of customers. i have seen it twice here and will never see it again because i refuse to give them my business anymore. it's actually just embarrassing and uncomfortable to be there. i bet the turnover is sky-high there but i do not visit there anymore so i wouldn't notice. which brings me to another reason i refuse to visit this location.... very tiny portions of everything, probably due to the manager micromanaging every morsel of food served by their employees to the customers. (I have witnessed this as well. no exaggeration.) in general i think *all* Taco Del Mar's are all a total ripoff when you look at how much $ you pay for the food itself... but this Pearl Street location is the worst. i feel so bad for the employees. do yourself a favor ... go to Memo's Mexican drive-through in North Tacoma. you'll be super glad you did. these corporate franchises are just a ripoff. just keepin' it real. read more

I visit this place just about every weekend when I'm doing my laundry next door. Janna is there every time, taking care of me. She and everyone else are always super friendly and amazing. Today, I realized that I should write a review so her boss and everyone else can know how great she is! I appreciate that Janna is a real person who is friendly and great at her job. Customer service sucks and is hard, so to be consistently amazing is kind of a challenge! I've seen her be calm under pressure when the laundromat flooded and flooded their restaurant and I've seen them sweltering away in the heat of summer. Real customer service is about legit people like her and not phony people with fake smiles. I will keep coming back and looking for her friendly face. The food is always amazing by the way, but with a million restaurants/taco joints to choose from, it really comes down to the people that work there. They create the ambiance that makes you want to keep coming back! I hope that the owner sees this and gives her more money and more opportunities because she is awesome! read more

Been here twice. The first time was 5 star. Love the burritos. 2nd time might have been our fault because we came 5 minutes before closing time. Taco Del Mar or aka TDM is another favorite family place for a quick simple take out dinner idea. We go to TDM when all four of us are at home and my mom decides cooking that night is not an option :P It's simple, easy, affordable and the portions are huge (okay well in my opinion because I always have left overs). You customize your burrito, enchilada, taco etc how you want it. Workers are friendly and can even suggest some good recommendations for you. Always try their specials, although it is difficult to branch out and try new things when you finally find your "favorite" dish. I went into the Taco Del Mar in Tacoma for lunch. The gal in front of me ordered a Shrimp Bowl. The gal puts on fresh gloves, grabs the shrimp, sets them on foil to put in the press, then sets up the bowl without changing her gloves. She put her hands into a bunch of the items and picked the stuff like cheese, olives, etc. out by hand contaminating them all. She then comes back to me and grabs my shell, with the same gloves. I should mention that I am deathly allergic to shrimp and do carry and epi pen. I told the gal what I just saw, she got snarky with me and changed her gloves and threw out the tortilla shell she was going to serve me. She never changed out any of the food bins she had contaminated. I tried to explain to her that she could possibly kill someone with her carelessness but she didn't seem to care. I walked out.
