I had three al pastor sopas. For .75 more you can mix your meat types which is nice. The masa dough is made in house. I love mexican but am allergic to jalapeños. This place only had jalapeños in the pico and they were way to remove. Their al pastor pork and pineapple is to die for. Flavorful but not spicy. The green salsa is mild but has jalapeños in it. If you like spicy hot food ask for the hot salsa. So good. Presentation is beautiful if you don't mess it up in the car like I did. I tried what they call the jello textured flan. It was so good and had a caramel liquid that I wanted to last forever. It was a nice size portion and under $3. There is also a cake like slice of flan but I didn't try that one. They do sell Mexican soda and ju aritos but I preferred a big gulp from across the street. Also the restaurant as a couple parking spots to make pick up easy. If the spaces are full I stop at the 7-11 across the street which is very convenient.

My first trip to El Gallo Tropical was to try their fish tacos as part of my goal to find the best…read morefish tacos in/around Hamilton Township. I'd known about them for years, but they were kind of out of the way for me. The place is small and unassuming, which gave me high expectations, as sometimes I find myself having lower expectations for a more "Mexican" decorated place (I'm wrong as often as I'm right). As far as the Fish Tacos went, they do not serve the Baja style fried fish tacos that I'd grown up on out west, so it was a downer when the plater arrived and I saw the tacos filled with chopped fish cooked in broth. That said, at least the taco was well filled and the fish had a very good flavor. The broth turned out to be a major issue, as the (very tasty) single layer tortillas were soaking up the broth while I ate the first taco, and the second and third tacos both split at the seams and fell apart after one or two bites. A second tortilla may have prevented this debacle, but I won't order fish tacos here again. I'd have loved a fish soup made in this style. The next visit I tried Tacos de Tripa (fried pork intestines), which is my current go to taco style. They were very good, and I enjoyed the heck out of them. They were nice and crispy as I'd requested, and the excellent tasting tortilla made them an excellent choice. My wife had a cheese tamal that had ribbons of poblanos inside as well, and it was also very good with the poblanos providing a nice balance to the heaviness of the cheese. I'd get both again in a heartbeat. My third visit was at lunchtime, and I opted for a Torta de Chili Relleno--essentially a chili relleno sandwich. It wasn't the first I've ever had, and it's a fave torta when I see them on the menu--which isn't often. The torta arrived with a nice sized chili relleno along with the usual smear of beans, lettuce, tomatoes, avocado, and a couple pieces of queso fresco served on a lightly toasted roll. Overall, the torta was very good tasting, and it went down nicely. However, I wish they used a little firmer roll instead of the soft one they did use. The torta was big and warm, and a crustier roll would have been better. The soft one used was near to collapsing under the weight of the ingredients. Fries are an option on the many torta options for a couple dollars extra. In retrospect, I'd have liked to have added a layer of fries to the sandwich for a little extra kick. All in all, El Gallo Tropical is a place I'll continue to go to. The staff is very friendly, and the menu is extensive (too big?). Although I had them initially at three stars after my first visit for fish tacos, the second (4+) and third (4-) visits have raised them up, and I'm rounding up to a four.

For too long a time, the choice just used to be just one place on 33 that no longer exists (even the building is gone). If not there, then one needed to head to Trenton for the Guatemalan places that served some solid tacos to go with their regional cuisine. Now, we've choices galore, and since we're no longer held hostage by lack of options, we actually have to put thought into deciding where to spend our dollars. My Quate has now been serving up tasty south of the border standards for about a half dozen years, and after a number of visits, I can say that My Quate is solidly on my list of places worth going to. The location is on the small side, and every time I've been there, there's been just one person working the front. Sometimes if it's busy it can take a few minutes before the counter person can get to you, but they've always been cheerful and attentive. The place is always clean, and it's got the usual bright decorations that you've grown to expect when going for Mexican style food. Probably my favorite item on the menu is the Tortilla Soup. It has a depth of flavor that hits me where I live, and it's a fantastic cold night dish (or anytime dish), and even the cup sized serving can be fairly filling in itself. If I need some Tortilla Soup, My Quate is my choice. They serve two different types of enchiladas--their House style and their Traditional style. The difference between the two appears to be the toppings and choices of sauces. That said, you need to pay attention. I ordered a House style chicken mole enchilada, and the server asked me if I wanted grilled chicken or shredded. I said shredded, but that only comes with the Traditional style. So what I got was the shredded chicken enchilada en Mole, but instead of being topped in the cheese sauce that the House style gets, it was topped with lettuce and sour cream (which I dislike). Luckily the sour cream wasn't super heavy and by smearing it in with the mole it was hidden, but it was a lesson in paying attention to the menu. That said, the Mole was very good, a hint of sweetness, but not excessively so, and it went down well. The fish tacos served here didn't quite make the top 3 of my faves (https://www.yelp.com/collection/3YtEEhWaFEnyFZ4JjP0nbw/Fish-Tacos-in-Hamilton-Area-Ranked) in the Hamilton area--mainly due to them not being the battered, deep fried style I prefer, but they were the BEST of the chopped, non-fried fish tacos. They were tacos with above average flavor, likely due to the flavorful liquid in which they're cooked (braised?) that's full of tomatoes, onions, and chiles. To top it off, they're served on a fresh, house made tortilla that's got a robust texture that didn't succumb to the wetness of the fish, and that tortilla also had a great flavor that you only get from freshly made tortillas. Probably my only real negative is the salsa that is served with the totopos at the beginning of the meal after sitting down. It's just lifeless and is like dipping your totopo into a bowl of crushed tomatoes. There's no pico in that gallo. Aside from my minor issues with the free stuff, My Quate is well worth the visit if you're looking for a quality Mexican style meal.

I didn't actually realize it was where I wanted to go until I was parking in front of it. As mentioned in other reviews, the dining space inside is small and very basic--which is fine. The portion of the store selling Mexican food staples is in the front as you enter, and the handful of dine-in tables are located at the back of the store between the store's aisles and the kitchen counter. What finally got me there to visit was that it was open for breakfast, and while a lot of places say they're open for breakfast, opening up at 9AM twice a week doesn't qualify. El Sabor Oaxaqueño 2 is open for breakfast most days at 6AM, because they serve people who are working their butts off and who need a good meal. The breakfasts at El Oaxaqueño 2 serve that need. My Chilaquiles Verde were spicy, but not super spicy, and it was served with rice and black beans. My carne asada was an addition as were my fried eggs. You can also get chicken breast (pechuga) or a red sauce if that's more your style. My wife's Huevos con Chorizo were very flavorful and very filling. They were also served with rice and black beans, along freshly made tortillas and a stick of cheese to crumble over your meal. She was only able to finish off half her plate, and we took home the rest. Our next visit was for dinner, and because I couldn't decide on what I wanted, we split three plates between us. First up was my Tacos de Tripa. I asked for the tripa (pork chitterlings, not tripe) to be well cooked so that it was crunchy, and they served them up just as I like them. They were topped with chopped onion and garlic, and once topped with the spicy green fresh salsa, we gobbled them down. The tortillas were freshly made and had a nice texture. The next dish was the chicken enchiladas en mole. Four enchiladas were well stuffed with white chicken meat then bathed in flavorful mole and served with rice and beans. Thankfully, it wasn't topped with a ridiculously huge glob of melted cheese. Last was the Quesadilla--not your Mama's quesadilla either. It was huge, and it wasn't as cheesy as the quesadillas the average person knows. Inside it was stuffed almost like a taco with big pieces of shrimp in one half and carne asada in the other. There was cheese, but cheese was not the star as it is in the average quesadilla we're all used to. It was good, and we both enjoyed it--it was just a surprise. The place is far from fancy, but they serve real food, and it's real good.

Well we fixed that as of last night and wow did we have a tasty experience. Bryan, our server, made sure we were ordering in the best way possible to ensure our return trip. So many tasty dishes to choose from and we had both narrowed down to two which Bryan explained and guided us on. Ironically my dish per a Google AI search was the most enjoyed dish. Funny, AI can now even help summarize all the Google reviews and to distill it down for us in seconds. So on this Friday evening after work, here's what we ordered... we start off with a mango margarita which we shared and this was over ice not frozen in a properly salted glass and boy did it taste awesome. We started off with an appetizer of the.Pastelillos Boricuas (3 pieces), it was for us cooked to perfection. It was not over fried. The meat was tender. It was tasty. It was. The crust was soft, even though it had some crispness to it, and I would absolutely start with these again. For our mains, my wife had the Ropa Vienna Platter and she absolutely loved it and reminded her of her time down in Miami for school and getting local Cuban or Caribbean or Puerto Rican food and this just hit it for her. For me I followed my Google AI search... The standout, highly-rated dish at La Casona Restaurante & Bar in Hamilton is their Trifongo. Customers rave about this signature item, often ordered with Churrasco A La Criolla (skirt steak in a flavorful Creole sauce). This came in a wooden round bowl at first I thought it was a coconut shell. It was absolutely delicious moist tender tasty. Our whole dinner experience met exactly with what I was looking for when I told my wife I'm tired of our usual restaurants. I wanna try something different. I don't know what it is but it's a food group that we don't eat or don't eat often and that's how we found La Casona. They have a bar. There's a huge parking lot outback indoor outdoor dining. It's perfect for romantic night out for two as well as large groups. Note they have different pricing for cash paying versus credit card.
