My first encounter with this local gem was over twenty years ago on my first visit to this Ohio town, and it's still around with improvements, enhancements and is still great overall! A terrific family run business. From its jam-packed with a wide array of dry and can goods on grocery shelves, great meats, extensive local baked goods, and a much renovated and expanded restaurant and really nice Mexican-style bar! If you're in town and are in the mood for an ice-cold Dox Equis and/or Jalisco style Mexican cuisine, this the place for you! Their goodies run the gamut from an incredible Pozole to Grilled Chicken delights, to delectable Burritos to mouthwatering tacos, some terrific, refried beans and incredible chips and salsa! I think they are one of the top five Mexican food joints in the Defiance area. Oh, and do your groceries while you're at it. Buen provecho ya'll.

What really bothered me was the surprise 3.5% surcharge they add if you pay with a card. That includes debit cards too. I didn't see any signs about it and wasn't told until the check came. At that point, I didn't have cash, so I had no choice. For anyone wondering, surcharges on debit cards aren't allowed under Visa and Mastercard rules. I get that places are trying to cover costs, but it should be clear up front and within the rules. I wouldn't have stayed if I knew about the extra fee--or I would've stopped at my bank across the street to grab some cash. Just a heads-up for anyone thinking of stopping by: bring cash.

3.5-ish For starters, the name of this restaurant (according…read moreto its own sign) is Taqueria Carnales, not Carnales Taqueria (as listed on Yelp). Anyway, this is a place for people who enjoy highly flavored and spicy food. Seriously, ask them to go easy on the jalapenos if you aren't up for spicy. I ordered everything as is for my first visit for takeout and enjoyed it but it was on the edge of too spicy for me, (chicken grande burrito) without actually crossing the line.Very much crossed the line with the shrimp tacos, imo. I ordered the following: Menudo Soup (made from cow's stomach); Shrimp Tacos and a Chicken Burrito Grande. The estimated prep time was 15 minutes and the food was ready on time. It's a cute, small restaurant that is very clean. While you could choose to dine in, I didn't see anyone eating there and it appears that most of their business is carryout. Upon arriving home, I found that the Menudo Soup had spilled inside the plastic bag. Not too big a deal. The other entrees were packed in styrofoam containers. The burrito was wrapped in paper and foil. My mom had the Menudo Soup and said it was good. She had one of the three shrimp tacos and said it was okay but that she wouldn't crave them. The avocado slices looked very fresh. My mom loves spicy food but she commented that the soup and tacos were very spicy. As for my chicken burrito, it was unexpectedly spicy in a mostly good way. The burrito was stuffed with everything inside - guacamole, rice, chicken, refried beans (very little), cheese and jalapeno peppers. It was a delicious combo but I would have preferred the individual ingredients to be separate. The biggest problem, however, was that the foil wrap made it difficult to cut into the burrito without also cutting into the foil. I think it's more of a "me" issue that might not bother anyone else. Overall, I would order from this restaurant again. The quality is definitely way above Taco Bell, but it's not quite fast food even though it's next to a Subway. Also, I asked if their refried beans were made with lard and I was assured they were vegetarian. If I hadn't seen so many positive reviews on Yelp, I wouldn't have known to check out this spot, but would encourage you to try it too for high quality, authentic Mexican cuisine! EDIT/UPDATE: I tried one of the shrimp tacos that my mom left in the fridge. OMG, it was super spicy to the point of giving me hiccups. Plus, the spiciness seemed to come from a creamy cheese sauce added to the shrimp tacos after they were cooked. I can understand why my mom wouldn't crave them and I would never order them myself. Based on your personal preference for spiciness, let this give you an idea of the level of spiciness that could be added to your food unless you request your dish to be less spicy. Recommend with caveat re spiciness.

Light and fresh, with the additional steak adding a heartiness to it. - Okonomiyaki Brussel Sprouts: Would never have thought of this combo but it definitely worked, with the okonomiyaki sauce adding a sweet kick to the sprouts. The pork belly on it was indulgent. - Bao Buns: Got the taiwanese pork and thai chicken baos. Of the two, the pork was tastier. The protein-to-bao ratio could be better. - Tacos: Pretty tasty though small. Space is compact, decor is lively. Prices are a tad high for the portion sizes, but that's how things are these days. Service was pretty quick and friendly. Overall, a pretty good spot for a fun meal.

We ended up walking down the street just to have them catch up and said we could dine in. There's no dining in the restaurant but there's a few tables on the sidewalk. It was taco Tuesday so we ordered three tacos. Carne asada. Chipotle chicken. Jackfruit pibil. The tortilla was two layered and slightly crispy around the edges while warm and soft on the inside. The sauces (mango, mild, and spicy) were flavourful. Fries supreme. Wow. It was literally indescribable. All the flavours complemented each other without being overwhelming. Any fries supreme you ever had, this fries supreme was next level. Churros. I felt it was slightly over cooked, but it's churros so it was still tasty. Big shoutout to the waitress who stayed late for us!! Many thanks!! Would 100% return for tacos and fries supreme.
