Leila - SOLTANI PLATTER

Leila

this restaurant is truly hard to get a reservation for, but it's so worth it! my friends and i…read morebooked our table of 5 a month in advance, and everything from the vibes of the restaurant to the food were really enjoyable. - salatim platter: so good !!! a great way to try all the dips that leila has to offer. i loved being able to mix and match different combinations with the 3 different breads that are included. - soltani platter: really good option if you have a group of 4 since you can get 1 skewer each and it comes with all the veggies and dips! we were able to substitute the 2 chicken joojeh for the steak kabob shishlik too for an extra charge. the meat for both the beef koobideh and steak were super flavorful and tender, and they were huge and filling too! pro tip: substitute the basmati rice for the tahdig (also extra charge) for the crispiest rice to pair with everything !! - lassi: a yummy, non-spirited mango lassi cocktail! not too sweet and a perfect drink to have alongside the food! beware that parking here is absolutely terrible LOL but it's expected since it's in a downtown area. come early and be prepared to circle around for awhile looking for parking on the streets! also for bigger groups, they may sit you at a table that is more tightly packed and cramped, so sharing dishes is a great way to make space. overall, we all really liked our food and would definitely be back if we're in san diego again!

I was sooooo excited to go to this restaurant! My husband made a reservation and surprised me with…read morea dinner date here, so I was ready to be blown away! Unfortunately it was a big disappointment. We first walked in and of course the beautiful decor stuns you, but once you look around you realize that the place is much MUCH smaller than expected. In all the pictures it looks like it's a large restaurant but it's actually pretty small. When you get seated it takes the waiters a little while to come over and greet you, and the waiters are not overly friendly, it more so seemed like he was rushed. We ordered drinks and an appetizer to begin and placed our order for food at the same time. The chicken shawarma hummus came out first with naan bread. We finished the appetizer and still no drinks in sight. Our food came out and the drinks finally did as well. We had ordered two beers one of which was not very cold. We were excited to try the food as you can see everything being cooked on the grill, so it builds up anticipation. We ordered the lamb shank which comes with rice and greens, and we also ordered the steak kabob which comes over a toasted type of bread with spread and a sauce, as well as two extra naan breads. The lamb shank came out hot and it was very delicious. This was the star of the show! The steak kabob comes with about 5 small pieces of steak and leaves much to be desired. It was cold and the sauces and cracker/bread didn't really complement it well. The most disappointing thing was that it was cold so it was hard to really enjoy it. We were almost done with our meal and the naan had still not come out or the second beer we ordered in the process of dinner. Towards the middle of our meal, another server came by and asked if we wanted a box. My husband was in the middle of having a bite of his food and you could tell we were not done yet. The server even said "oh sorry I don't mean to rush you" so you could tell he knew what he was doing. I don't expect to be rushed through our meal when we had been waiting a long while for our meal to come out and when things got missed. Overall, for the prices and hype this place has, it leaves you feeling dissatisfied and disappointed. If you are looking for a place to take cute pictures and don't really care about the food then you'll love this place, but if you truly like to enjoy the food and look for great customer service, then there are way better places that can go above and beyond your expectations.

I saw Al Awael on Yelp and the food looked so good. I wanted to check this place out. My party came…read moreto Al Awael later in the evening, after the Iftar rush. As a result, the restaurant was not crowded, but they were out of several menu items. The restaurant is spacious and very color coordinated. The armrests on the chairs are at a slightly odd height for me but very aesthetic. This restaurant is family-run by a father and son duo. The father was cooking while his son was on the front end of things. The service was super friendly and I really appreciated that he explained the menu thoroughly to us. They were out of beef kabob and chicken shawarma (my go-to). I opted for the liver plate with fries, and also tried a bite of beef shawarma. We were also served a complimentary lentil soup as an appetizer. The soup was DELICIOUS. Soft and warm and comforting, with vermicelli bits in it. It was incredibly flavorful and soothing, something I would crave on cold days, sick days, any days really. I will definitely be finding recipes and attempting to make this myself. Middle Eastern places always have the most delicious, freshly fried fries, 10/10 no notes especially with ketchup (sue me, I'm basic XD). My grilled liver hit the spot. I think my one critique would be that because the pieces were quite large, some parts were quite tough. The roast onions and tomatoes had a good smoky char, and the portions were generous. After I polished off my first cube, the son swung by and set a grilled jalapeño down in front of me, saying that his father recommended parting it with the liver. It's personal touches like this that make me really love a local, family owned place! And his father was definitely right about the jalapeño. That and the pickled cabbage were the perfect complement for the rich, earthy liver. Prices were fair and portions were huge. The service was standout here as well. I would LOVE to come back and try their lamb dishes, and I definitely anticipate updating to a 5 star review then.
