I had been remiss and hadn't been to Tabor in all these years of living in Baltimore. I'm glad I finally rectified that oversight. First of all, the service is incredible. On the phone or in person, the staff here is delightfully pleasant. The restaurant is clean and I was transfered by the Ethiopan music videos that they play in the background. The star of the show is the food. I'm not an Ethiopian food connoisseur (in fact, my prior experiences had been lackluster) but Tabor was a revelation. The beef was tender and flavorful and the spicy chicken had just enough kick to pick you up but no so much as to be overwhelming. A friend recommended Tabor over another Ethiopian restaurant I was going to try, and boy I am glad I listened. This place is kinda off the radar in that you could walk down Park Ave and saunter right on by and miss it. We went with intention, however, and easily found the door to Tabor. We didn't have a reservation but the staff accommodated us quickly. It's a rather small place, when we were seated only two other tables were occupied but they seem to be very busy with take out orders! We watched patrons enter and exit with bags of delicious food to-go. My husband had never tried Ethiopian before so I was determined to order The Baltimore (recommended for two but could easily feed more) so he'd have a true variety of offerings and best able to try as much as possible. We also started with the Veggie Sambusas which were perfection! Crispy outside and flavorful, mildly spicy lentils inside. I probably could have made a meal of just these I loved them so much. The Sambusas also opened up our appetites, we were ready to feast! Despite it being Friday evening and Tabor being busy with lots of take out business, the service was prompt and attentive. Our very impressive Baltimore platter arrived with extra injera to mop up all the goodness. I loved the variety this platter offered. So many vegetables (the beets!) and lentils but we adored the special tibs and alicha wot. So tender and so much flavor. I personally also love the slight sourness of the injera to compliment the heavy spices of the veggies and meat. Admittedly we couldn't quite finish every bite despite our best efforts and I regret not bringing home our leftovers because I woke up the next day wanting more from Tabor. So this restaurant has a patron for life out of me, because, man, what an amazing visit! I liked everything about this place as soon as I walked in the door. I wanted ALL the things, and was directed to "The Baltimore" which includes 9 veggies (NINE, OMG) and 2 proteins. We went with the Key Wot and got Kitfo for an up-charge (WORTH IT). Also got some honey wine, which was interesting but ultimately not my thing. Perhaps on the next visit I'll explore the world of Ethiopian beer. The platter of food looked absolutely AMAZING when it arrived and I wasn't sure where to start...LOL, that's a lie, I went straight for the kitfo with a piece of injera. And when I say it was delicious...LAWD. I asked for some extra spice and was given a container of what looked like cayenne pepper, but less heat and more salt. It was perfect. With that and plenty of injera, I got to work. And I was thoroughly pleased with all the food on the platter. I ate until I was stuffed and there was still so much food left. Took home a doggy bag. Lo and behold, the next day, I heated up my leftovers and the food was still excellent. It was a little hard to wrangle out from soggy injera, but I happily managed what I could. I WILL BE BACK. This place has some seriously excellent Ethiopian food! I had the 5-combo vegetarian platter, and my boyfriend went for the special tibs--both were absolutely delicious! Those tibs were some of the best I've ever tasted. My only gripe? You have to pay extra for 100% teff injera. Seriously, why is that even a thing? Had to show my friend how to use the injera which was perfect by the way. I am a fan of injera being moist but not too moist and theirs was perfect! All the veggies came out done up to par. We didn't receive any more service until we had to wave someone down for the check. That was a bit different but their food made me forget about that. I've been here twice and I can't want to come back. Parking is street and there are not many things I would parallel park for but this restaurant makes the list. Both times the staff were friendly, helpful, and attentive. There are tables but also family style booths that make sharing Ethiopian super easy which I think is important for this type of meal. Both times I ordered the Baltimore and Doro Wot (first time I also got the tilapia with rice). The food is delicious and consistent! the tilapia has a nose kick to it and quick tip for when you order too much food: this one heats up well! The Doro Wot is good, but honestly, you don't need more than the platter for 2-3 people to be happy. You get 2 meats and endless veggies as well as plenty of injera to enjoy it all with. We picked the Key Wot (my fave!) which is flavorful and almost like a tender jerky. We also got the Special Tibs which is slightly spicy and pairs perfectly with the cheese that comes on the platter. Veggies include cabbage and carrots, collard greens, lots of lentils, potatoes and beets. There's also a fresh tomato and jalapeños salad to add acidity, spice and freshness to every bite. Ugh. I really enjoy Ethiopian food and it had been over a year since I'd indulged, so I was very excited to go to Tabor. We were immediately greeted by the host, who is not Ethiopian but had done a great job learning the language! He ensured that he would have us at a table in just a few minutes, which we were. Before we could order, we were asked to play a round of connect four. The winner would play the host, and he promised a shot if we did! This helped the time pass quickly. The food was fantastic, we had a mix of both vegetarian and meat options with our injera. There was a powdered spice that we mixed a little with our dish. I wouldn't have too much of it--it doesn't taste great on its own. We also tried the Ethiopian wine--we received very heavy pours on this. Our host was pretty funny, open, and friendly. I was glad I was with a group of friends however, he might have felt a little too friendly if not. The service is lackadaisical and exists in spurts of activity when your server seems to remember she has a table that needs looking after, and then she does that in the sweetest most attentive way, but when she goes away again, you may not see her for quite a while. Oh, you'll see her glide by in a sort of languorous way, but she is not pressed to return to your table by her sense of duty, but rather, her anticipatory pleasure at seeing you again, whenever that may be. This, by the way, is the norm for service in every Ethiopian restaurant I've been in throughout the U.S., Canada and Europe. It's just the way it is, hahahaha. When I think of DC I think of Ethiopian food, so I started wondering if Baltimore would be close enough to that area and therefore also have some Ethiopian restaurants. I was excited to find Tabor as the reviews looked great and it was only a 10 minute Uber from our hotel. We opted to go for lunch on a Friday and found the restaurant mostly empty, but some others did come in as we were eating. Our server was friendly enough, but not really all that helpful. That was fine for me as I'm well versed in the cuisine, but would be an issue for someone who has never done Ethiopian. We opted to try the Ethiopian beer and the Ethiopian Honey wine. Neither of which we loved, so we ordered some water to wash it all down. Since Trevor hadn't done Ethipian before, it made sense to order the combo platter, consisting of about 8 different vegetarian options, and maybe 4 meat options? And a good amount of injera to mop it all up. The injera was just perfect and had all the sour taste with the right mouth-feel, it didn't tear too easily and was the perfect eating vessel. All of the dishes we mopped up were great, with one of the meat courses being the stand out, I believe it was lamb. My husband and I have eaten at Ethiopian restaurants in Miami, Washington D.C. and New York City. It has impressed us how consistent all of these restaurants have been at providing delicious fresh-tasting food! We always order veggie platters and did the same here at Tabor. Everything was fantastic. If I had to pick my absolute favorite of the nine different veggie options we ordered, I would probably go with the beets but that's only if I was forced to pick one, they were really all delicious! The service was also great despite the restaurant being quite busy on a Friday night. We will be here in Baltimore until August and may try to go back once a week :-) read more
