Well because of it's location, I am a fan!! It's right next to 7-Eleven and across the street there are restaurants and a Domino's pizza restaurant. Good location you ask....I'm not sure, but for what I needed, it was good enough for me. I was only in the area because I was visiting Richmond a few weekends ago for the Virginia Wine Expo and later on that night my babe and I stayed at a hotel in the Glen Allen area of the city. So from the hotel to the store was a ten minute drive, but our main reason for the drive was for the pizza. Nevertheless, we decided to make good use of our wait time. The store is small, but it serves its purpose. It's centered in a shopping area that looks like office suites. You know like if you were visiting a doctor's office or a dentist office. The layout of the building is set up as such, but there was a purple sign lit that read Taboo...hmmmm it got my attention, so babe and I went over since we were waiting on our pizza order anyway. I only saw one worker behind the counter. She didn't seem to enthused about working, but she did ask if we needed help or had any questions about anything. We were just browsing, pretty much everything was self-explanatory :) We were in the store for about 10 minutes before another couple walked in. There was ample stuff for the ladies, penis here penis there they were everywhere!!! This lead me to believe this store must cater to the women wholeheartedly...sorry guys, but I there are a few items for you present. I did come across some "good head" liquid and some other liquid used for heating up the skin. Both were under $1.00 so why not get a little spice for the bedroom or whatever for a cheap thrill(s) :) I'd recommend this place. It's a petite boutique shop, but from attire to whips and chain you're bound to find something you'd like to spend money on. They even had a sale section at the front of the store. A year and a half ago when Alison Miller was first approached to lead a series on sex and sexuality at the Broad, a co-working space for women, she wasn't sure Richmond was ready. As the owner of Taboo, a local chain of shops that believes everyone deserves a fantastic and fulfilling sex life, Miller was ready to lead the conversation. But would anyone attend? Since the summer of 2018, Miller has held six of her signature Dirty Talks, each of which sold out. Customers at Taboo often ask her for guidance, but a tête-à-tête conversation in one of her shops is a distinctly different dynamic than engaging with a crowd. No matter the size of the audience, Miller relishes the chance to give people the knowledge, confidence and safe space they need to explore. "I really enjoy the opportunity to help people be open and share positivity so they can put all their good slut energy out there," Miller says. "A lot of the things people may think are weird or wrong are incredibly common and normal. Since I feel comfortable talking about these tricky topics, it feels like my duty to do these talks." Sex positivity wasn't always Miller's planned career path. She graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a degree in fashion merchandising and worked in retail to pay the bills. While a sales associate at Taboo she began to see the potential, so when its previous owner decided to shutter the shop in 2002, Miller swooped in and bought her out, remaining merchandise and all. Miller shifted Taboo's assorted offerings away from lots of lingerie and a tiny toy section to focus more on the fun and fantasy of sex. With trendier merchandise and a more inclusive array of toys, business boomed. Over the years she has expanded her flagship store on Broad Street twice, to the point where that location is now three times bigger. Due to the region's prudish zoning, it took Miller seven years to find a location for her second site, a storefront along Midlothian Turnpike. The location is hard to miss: a cheeky mural of a woman feeding a beaver a juicy red apple covers the front. As soon as the former Prime Video on Patterson Avenue went out of business, Miller snapped up that location with the rare zoning she requires and opened her third shop within the same year. After Colonial Heights rejected the necessary permits for a planned fourth store, Miller chose to view that defeat as a sign: "Today I'm glad I have just three stores because, if I had a fourth location, right now I would be so busy running all of those shops that I wouldn't be able to do the work of connecting with the community." Miller's first Dirty Talk focused on a topic she's become an expert on over the years -- sex toys. Other quarterly talks have covered topics as diverse as anal play, how to explore fetishes safely, and BDSM -- a catch-all phrase for bondage and discipline, dominance and submission and sadism and masochism. At first only women were welcome, but while planning an event on non-monogamy, Miller opened the series to all genders so that straight women could bring their partners. The Dirty Talk on open relationships proved so popular that she scheduled it a second time, making it the only topic Miller has repeated so far. "I've done a lot of Sex Toy 101 and more explanatory topics, but the most pressing conversations are around relationships," Miller explains. "Nonmonogamy is one of the most important subjects we've covered because it can be so hard for people to discuss on their own. ... So many people are interested in it, yet they don't think it's right for them." Attendees to Miller's nonmonogamy talk quickly learned that her sessions couldn't be further from the blind leading the blind: She and her boyfriend have been happily nonmonogamous for years and intimately understand the challenges and benefits an open relationship presents. On Jan. 4, Miller will hold her first Dirty Talk of 2020, an interactive workshop on sex-positive writing for anyone who wants to get more in touch with their sexuality through the power of the pen. By sharing true excerpts about her sex life on her blog and Instagram, "Throats to the Sky," Miller hopes to create a safe space for attendees to share tidbits of their own erotic writing. "I find value in writing about sex," she says. "What better way is there to explain what you want to a partner?" After each of her talks she says at least one attendee has reached out to say they had a wonderful time and were still thinking about the discussion. For Miller, helping to liberate even one person from shame around sexuality makes it all worthwhile. "It's limitless what you can do sexually and who you can do it with as well," Miller says. "I want people to understand anything is a possibility, and all of it is completely OK. I am a new mom and I dont get to have as much fun time with my husband as I used to, so when we were able to go out a little last week (I think it was Tuesday?) we had some drinks and then stopped by the West End location on the way home. My husband and baby were in the car and time was super limited, so I explained my situation to the sales team and told them my budget ($150) and they put together the most awesome bag of fun toys, lubes, and even a sexy outfit for me in 10 minutes!
