I believe there are 3 Taboo stores in Richmond VA. This one happened to be near many Asian restaurants and we were going to eat lunch after shopping here. The interior of this Taboo reminded me of mega adult stores in San Francisco decades ago. There were like 6 rooms (I think) and each room has different stuff to sell. The shelves were fully stocked with stuff. The display of merchandise was very attractive. I felt like browsing at a museum of stuff. There were tons of stuff. A year and a half ago when Alison Miller was first approached to lead a series on sex and sexuality at the Broad, a co-working space for women, she wasn't sure Richmond was ready. As the owner of Taboo, a local chain of shops that believes everyone deserves a fantastic and fulfilling sex life, Miller was ready to lead the conversation. But would anyone attend? Since the summer of 2018, Miller has held six of her signature Dirty Talks, each of which sold out. Customers at Taboo often ask her for guidance, but a tête-à-tête conversation in one of her shops is a distinctly different dynamic than engaging with a crowd. No matter the size of the audience, Miller relishes the chance to give people the knowledge, confidence and safe space they need to explore. "I really enjoy the opportunity to help people be open and share positivity so they can put all their good slut energy out there," Miller says. "A lot of the things people may think are weird or wrong are incredibly common and normal. Since I feel comfortable talking about these tricky topics, it feels like my duty to do these talks." Sex positivity wasn't always Miller's planned career path. She graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a degree in fashion merchandising and worked in retail to pay the bills. While a sales associate at Taboo she began to see the potential, so when its previous owner decided to shutter the shop in 2002, Miller swooped in and bought her out, remaining merchandise and all. Miller shifted Taboo's assorted offerings away from lots of lingerie and a tiny toy section to focus more on the fun and fantasy of sex. With trendier merchandise and a more inclusive array of toys, business boomed. Over the years she has expanded her flagship store on Broad Street twice, to the point where that location is now three times bigger. Due to the region's prudish zoning, it took Miller seven years to find a location for her second site, a storefront along Midlothian Turnpike. The location is hard to miss: a cheeky mural of a woman feeding a beaver a juicy red apple covers the front. As soon as the former Prime Video on Patterson Avenue went out of business, Miller snapped up that location with the rare zoning she requires and opened her third shop within the same year. After Colonial Heights rejected the necessary permits for a planned fourth store, Miller chose to view that defeat as a sign: "Today I'm glad I have just three stores because, if I had a fourth location, right now I would be so busy running all of those shops that I wouldn't be able to do the work of connecting with the community." Miller's first Dirty Talk focused on a topic she's become an expert on over the years -- sex toys. Other quarterly talks have covered topics as diverse as anal play, how to explore fetishes safely, and BDSM -- a catch-all phrase for bondage and discipline, dominance and submission and sadism and masochism. At first only women were welcome, but while planning an event on non-monogamy, Miller opened the series to all genders so that straight women could bring their partners. The Dirty Talk on open relationships proved so popular that she scheduled it a second time, making it the only topic Miller has repeated so far. "I've done a lot of Sex Toy 101 and more explanatory topics, but the most pressing conversations are around relationships," Miller explains. "Nonmonogamy is one of the most important subjects we've covered because it can be so hard for people to discuss on their own. ... So many people are interested in it, yet they don't think it's right for them." Attendees to Miller's nonmonogamy talk quickly learned that her sessions couldn't be further from the blind leading the blind: She and her boyfriend have been happily nonmonogamous for years and intimately understand the challenges and benefits an open relationship presents. On Jan. 4, Miller will hold her first Dirty Talk of 2020, an interactive workshop on sex-positive writing for anyone who wants to get more in touch with their sexuality through the power of the pen. By sharing true excerpts about her sex life on her blog and Instagram, "Throats to the Sky," Miller hopes to create a safe space for attendees to share tidbits of their own erotic writing. "I find value in writing about sex," she says. "What better way is there to explain what you want to a partner?" After each of her talks she says at least one attendee has reached out to say they had a wonderful time and were still thinking about the discussion. Not only is the staff friendly but the wide selection of products and layout of the store made the shopping experience made for a great time. Taboo is a great location for ALL of your bedroom needs. No, really, ALL OF THEM. There was not a single thing I have ever heard of that I didn't see here, it was incredibly impressive. Came here with a lady friend on a whim to peruse their offerings. I had the good fortune to come by when someone was just pulling out of a space, though it was easy to tell how screwed I would have been if that space hadn't been available. No street parking, either: just 5 spaces in a private small lot. Anyway, once inside, I was overwhelmed by the sheer number of products here. Lots of outfits, toys, lubricants, specialty items, etc. I was especially impressed by their extensive collection of DVDs: basically, if it's legal, they've got it. They had an impressive array of parody DVDs too, so if you like to laugh out loud while watching your porn, they've got you covered. Their selection of specialty items is impressive, and they even had ones I have never even seen offered online. Clearly they buy directly from some very specific, limited-run manufacturers. Ironically, one consequence of having so many products is limited maneuverability within the store. While the parking lot clearly indicates this place was never meant to hold large numbers of customers simultaneously, my lady friend and I still ended up having to take a careful route around the store to avoid bumping into the other customers. Prices are what you'd expect to see: pricey to cover the overhead of a brick-and-mortar shop. My advice? If you have very specific tastes, buy your specialty items here; skip the generic ones, those are best ordered online. Can't speak on the service here since no one approached us, though they seemed amiable enough to the people they were talking to. I highly enjoyed coming here and would gladly return if I had something specific in mind that I wanted... assuming I could find a place to park! I love Taboo! First off, it's female owned with female employees so it takes away a lot of the creep factors that a lot of sex shops have. Plus, being female run has a lot of perks when you are a woman shopping for sex toys because you have less of a chance of buying crap in that situation. They have a great selection of dvds for rent or for purchase, something for all different kinds of tastes. I never feel uncomfortable at Taboo. The staff is super friendly. I feel like it's almost a bit taboo to be penning a review about Taboo! After one visit here, I must say that this risque shop is the perfect place to purchase bachelorette party schwag - games, gifts, or decorations. I went here last week to get a racy gift for a friend who was turning the big "4-0" and felt the need to stray out of the boundaries of good taste for just this once. I was pleased with how well merchandised the place was but disappointed how little inventory their seemed to be on display. Knowledgeable, helpful, and LGBT+ friendly AND trans-inclusive!!! I went to the location on Patterson Avenue because the one closer to me was out of the product I came in looking for. I don't know the name of the salesperson I talked to, but they were so helpful! They provided me with so much information, about all of the products I was looking at (toys, cleaner, lube). It was my first time in a real adult sex store (does Spencer's count? Aha) and I was super nervous, and initially had intentions of not talking to anyone because I felt embarrassed. But when I couldn't find the product, I was forced to, and I'm glad I did!!! I came out with more items than I intended, but a lot more knowledge behind the items since I did talk to someone - I highly recommend asking questions if you aren't familiar with items, or if it is your first time as well. A good store will be judgement-free, and you deserve to feel safe and respected in your questions and choices. The more I talked to this person, the more comfortable I felt sharing more about what I wanted, and the more comfortable I felt asking questions. And considering the products aren't exactly cheap, I'm VERY glad I did so!!! (Another reason I encourage asking questions - best use of your money!) In my case, what I knew going in, but had to get over, is that these people working aren't going to (shouldn't) judge me. They are used to questions, and in my case, this individual really seemed to *want* to help, which makes a massive difference - the first location I was in did not have the same energy/vibes from the salespeople, so even though it is a little further away, I may be coming back to this specific store. I also want to add that the salesperson I talked to was SUPER trans-inclusive! They always made sure to say "person with genital" or simply said the genital and didn't assign pronouns. They immediately corrected themselves after assuming what MY genitals were, and also corrected themselves during another conversation (using "if" rather than "when"). They were very sex-positive and masturbation-positive and emphasized that toys don't have rules (except use specific toys when doing anal stuff y'all, please - don't have an ER story!). The website mentions toys for "all genders/bodies" but it's one thing to say and another thing to show. My son is in the marines. He asked for some entertainment but didn't elaborate. He's got a blow up sheep and blow up fat girl coming his way as well as some stuff to dress them up with. I was disappointed that there was no material that featured midgets because I know my son and his buddies would always remember something like that showing up in the Christmas pack on the boat. Came in looking for a wedding gift for a friend, wasn't sure what to get and when we asked for suggestions the lady didn't know what to suggest and she just blew us off.
