    Upon arrival we were greeted with a different menu than our last visits. According to them, they had completely overhauled about 3 weeks ago, to introduce more complex dishes at a slightly higher price point matching nearby restaurants. We were a little dismayed as during our previous visits, the food and price point were quite reasonable and we all thought the food options were much yummier than the new menu. We decided to just try out the charred sashimi starter and the omakase yakitori. The ambience was nice, and the servers were very attentive and friendly. Charred Sashimi ($26 6pc): Had no char, although the fish itself was good quality. Our favorite part about it was the smoked soy sauce that accompanied it. It was a very unique and delicious. Yakitori Omakase ($28 4pc): did not taste very yakitori ish and was definitely not grilled over charcoal... The chicken breast just tasted boiled and dry. the old Taberu menu will be missed

    My family and I had an amazing experience at Taberu! When we visited, it was only the second day of their new Michelin-chef curated menu...such a pleasant surprise! Our server ended up being the manager, Savior, who was just great. He took the time to explain everything about the menu to us, answered questions, and really made me feel like we were VIP's! The restaurant is moody and dark, perfect for a date night. The menu has entrees, but also many small plates so we did a variety of both. Drinks: Kiwi sorbet high 5/5 Taberu rice lager 5/5 Small plates: Fried yam potato, ikura cream 4/5 Crispy pork belly crepe 5/5 Uni kiritanpo 4/5 Yakitori omakase 4/5 Entrees: Kobujime salmon and ikura 3/5 Grilled A4 Wagyu 5/5 Grilled lamb 6/5 (our favorite dish we got) Hitsumabushi (grilled unagi and rice) 5/5 All of the dishes were plated and served beautifully! I would 100 times recommend the crispy pork belly crepe, yakitori, and grilled lamb.

    Came here on NYE because a friend was spinning that night. The space is on the smaller side, but the vibes are on point, intimate, energetic, and I can easily see it getting packed on a regular night. They were running a limited menu for NYE, which I wish had been the full lineup, but honestly everything we ordered still hit. The small bites were solid, and the ramen was comforting and flavorful, definitely enough to make me curious about what the full menu looks like. Currently working on convincing my wife we need a return trip. What really makes TABERU stand out is the concept behind it. It's backed by top restaurateurs from Tokyo who collectively own over 200 restaurants, all coming together to bring street-level Tokyo flavors to LA. The name "TABERU" ties into Sandaiyokkyu, the three major human desires, with the focus on shokuyoku, the desire to eat. That philosophy actually shows in the food: simple, intentional, and satisfying. Their chefs from Tokyo created a menu you don't really see elsewhere in LA. Signature dishes like the Yasai Makis (fresh veggies wrapped in pork) sound incredible, and it's great to see vegetarian and vegan options as well. Short version: great atmosphere, solid food even on a limited menu, and a concept that feels thoughtful rather than gimmicky. Definitely coming back to experience it properly.

    Nicely decorated restaurant near the Art District. Finding street parking was a little difficult; we ended up in a parking lot a couple of blocks away for $5 per hour. We were a party of seven and were given two iPads to place our orders. This system felt a bit inefficient since everyone needed time to browse the menu. It would make more sense to have a QR code for guests to view the menu on their own devices and then have one person submit the order on an iPad for the table. Another issue was that once the server took the iPads to place our order, we could no longer see what we had submitted. There were also several mistakes: a few items we ordered didn't arrive, and three items we didn't order showed up on our list. It was a bit of a mess, but the servers were very kind and attentive, and they eventually got everything sorted out. We ordered the following: Kanpachi Carpaccio Tako Sunomono Tonpeiyaki Soba Meshi "Jidori" Chicken Katsu Tamagotoji Mochi Chicken Ramen (sub chicken for pork) Tan Tan Ramen The Carpaccio and Sunomono were both refreshing and flavorful. The Tonpeiyaki was just okay. The Soba Meshi had us scratching our heads--it's supposed to be a mix of fried rice and yakisoba noodles, but ours was about 85% rice and 15% noodles. We were also surprised that the "Jidori" Chicken Katsu Tamagotoji didn't come with rice. There was a mix-up with my niece's Chicken Ramen--she asked for pork instead of chicken but received chicken. She decided to keep it and didn't want to make a fuss. A few of us ordered Tan Tan ramen and it was good but needed more minced pork. The Mochi was my favorite--it was the perfect way to end the meal. Overall, the restaurant has a nice atmosphere and friendly service, but the ordering system and a few food details could definitely use some improvement.

    Cool little spot in the Arts District! We came here randomly on a late Sunday afternoon and didn't have many expectations, but was pleasantly surprised. "Izakaya" style dining means to eat and dine for as long as you want, and order Japan-style through a kiosk app to send to the kitchen (as our waiter happily described). The waiter at the front was happy to explain everything to us and have us sit anywhere since they just opened for the night. Glad to have something a little chill and private, as he recommended their classic skewers and sakes and beers. Everything here was cooked great. Flavors were tasty and cooked hot off the stove. The bacon-wrapped Portobello Mushroom skewer was my favorite skewer. Absolutely bomb and juicy, as the flavor of the bacon just soaked into the mushroom so nicely. The other skewers were as expected and okay, but I would come back for those mushroom skewers! I was also craving soba noodles for a hot summer day, and decided to try their soba noodle salad (Gyu Shabu Soba Salad). I've never seen soba noodles served like this, but it was a winner for me! I loved how fresh and flavorful it was - almost like a papaya salad meets heartier soba noodles. Great flavors and filling enough to share. We also shared a "jifori" chicken katsu w/ egg rice bowl which was heartier and filled us up - a comfort dish. Overall it can get pricey if you keep ordering up, but we had a good experience. Very lowkey, not too many people around, and tucked away in the middle of the Arts District... It's a bit unassuming from the outside, but I love how spacious, clean, and comfy their interior is (especially loved their gorgeous yellow couches with side-by-side seating all around). I'm not sure how many times I'll be in the area, but Taberu is a great spot to pop into if you don't want some sausages at the neighboring Wurstkuche or don't want to reserve a table at the other neighboring dining spots La Cha Cha or Manuela... Taberu is great, quick, casual and comfy with some real tasty bar-style bites and eats!

    I really wanted to like this place because the presentation was amazing. However, the service was kind of mad and the food was also subpar I attended a 222 event here and met the sixth other people. Staff was friendly enough that they sat us down fairly quickly and took our drink orders however, in the two hours we were there one of my group members didn't even get his food and I don't think that he ordered anything Super complex. It took them another hour and a half to provide the fried rice at another person in my group ordered and then they got the drinks wrong and my order wrong. The server was nice enough to take the guys order off of the bill, but given we had another location to go to the guy in my group didn't even get to eat so that kind of sucked my sushi came out pretty cold and it was really expensive for the amount of pieces I got I think it was $85 prior to tipping for my drink. The one roll and the sashimi I ordered.

    I can not wait to come back. We went when it opened for lunch. My japanese mother is very picky when we go out to eat japanese food. She loved the food. She said it tasted like home. The owner was so kind and impressed us with the variety of choices that were given to us. The restaurant itself is so inviting. I really love the decor. The art district area is a nice break from downtown LA.

    Came by here with a couple friends for dinner on a weekday night. Got the a5 waygu uni skewer, tepin yaki, hojicha tiramisu, and the get you high flight. The waygu was definitely the highlight but it was on the pricier end being $30 per skewer. A little disappointed in the flights. They were a bit too sweet and tasted pretty syrupy. The food came out extremely slow as well so expect to be there a bit longer. Food: 7.9/10 Service: 7/10 Ambience: 9/10

    We stumbled upon a gem of a spot during a quick trip to LA for an exhibition. My friend and I didn't have reservations, and while it seemed like you needed them for indoor seating, we ended up on the cozy patio with heaters. Honestly, I think we lucked out--the patio was super inviting! That said, the inside looked amazing, with its dim lighting, great color scheme, and comfy seating. We came for a light bite and left very satisfied. My friend loved her picks, and so did I. I went with the Toro Taku roll on the server's recommendation. While it was delicious, it was smaller than I expected--just four pieces and not a lot of fish. I couldn't help but envy some of the sushi I saw at other tables, which looked amazing. Next time, I'll stick with my instincts and try the roll I was originally eyeing. What I did love, though, was the pork belly-wrapped Portobello mushroom--an absolute standout pick. Note to self: order more of this next time. There was a little mix-up about whether they had matcha iced tea, but our server brought it out eventually, and it was worth the wait--delicious! My friend ordered the A5 Premium Wagyu Uni and the Spicy Avocado Cucumber appetizer, and she raved about both. The only downside? Parking. Like most places in LA, you have to hunt for it and pay. But we found a cheap $5 lot just half a block away, so not too bad--yay! All in all, this was a delicious experience, though we probably should've ordered more since portions weren't as big as we expected. I'm already eyeing the Half Ramen for next time--sounds like a perfect way to start or finish the meal. What do you think? Is Half Ramen a starter or the grand finale?

    We celebrated our girlfriend's birthday here with a party of 13 people & it was great! They were extremely accommodating to our large party size and gave us a big long table and service was amazing Our side of the table ordered a Sapporo beer tower along with a 720 ml of Dassai 23 sake which is the best one I forgot the name of all the dishes we ordered but we ordered the Yakiniku Beef Yakitori, the shiso & pork belly yakitori, the Kanpachi Carpaccio, Spare Ribs, Salmon Maki, Miso Ramen & some other dishes. The Kanpachi Carpaccio was my favorite! It was so buttery & the sauces on top paired so well with the fish. Another favorite was the spare ribs because the meat was so freakin juicy & tender and fell off the bone so easily... WE ATE THAT SHIT UPPPP Our server brought us a dessert for the birthday girl & even sang for her which damn bro had a voice of an angel so thank you for blessing us with that! Hands down a great experience & definitely recommend to anyone who's lookin for some good Izakaya food

    I'm so glad I got to come here and finally try their food. I've always passed by it but so glad I finally got to experience. We got sashimi, crispy kaarage, skewers (chile relleno, oyster mushroom, and premium wagyu), and a dragon roll. We also ordered the cocktail of the day. The sashimi was very good and melts in your mouth. I really enjoyed the skewers as well. The restaurant has a really nice ambience. It's really pretty inside and it got crowded as the dinner rush came in. This is a really cute date spot in the Arts District!

    I ordered unagidon and it was served in a small hot bowl. For $28 I expected more. There were only 2-3 small pieces of unagi on top of white rice. I can't say I liked the sauce bc it was a little spicy which was so unexpected.. it was just ok for me. The eel could have been more tender as well. I did like the ambiance and the salads other people at our table ordered were a generous portion and totally shareable. I got to try some and really enjoyed the fresh garlic dressing. Our waitress was very informative with the menu selections. But I did notice that service was a little slow. We asked for more dressing for the salad and it came 20 minutes later. :-/ Would I visit again? Maybe if we were celebrating a bday or some other special event, but the prices are pretty high and parking is a challenge.

It was as good as I remembered, and probably even better. I can't imagine letting another eight and a half years pass without going back. The only negative is that parking is either difficult or $15, which feels bad in a pretty quiet residential area. Better to take a car in any case, so you can enjoy the extensive selection of sakes. We shared a full-sized bottle, I forget which but I think it was a junmai daiginjo, and it was lovely. Tsubaki is such a nice, welcoming little izakaya. Service is great, the atmosphere warm and easy. You just want to sit back and drink at a leisurely pace. The food is excellent, with a robust menu of creative Japanese food. We shared everything, starting with a stellar kanpachi crudo with ume ponzu, shiso, sweet onion and habanero pickles, and furikake. My favorite dish of the night was the tsukune katsu. I love tsukune, the tare-glazed chicken meatballs you'll find in any yakitori place. This was my first time having them in katsu form, panko-fried and served over cabbage with Kewpie mayo and tonkatsu sauce. The chawanmushi was delicious, silky steamed egg custard topped with Dungeness crab, truffle salt, and mitsuba. Likewise the kinoko tempura, an array of maitake, shiitake, and enoki mushrooms fried light and crispy, with yuzu shichimi and tentsuyu for dipping. We got a skewer of bonchiri from the yakitori menu, delightfully chewy bites of charcoal-grilled jidori chicken tail. Finally, a plate of yakisoba, pan-fried noodles with house-cured Peads & Barnetts char siu, pickled green garlic, and cracklin. We got the hojicha parfait, and it was more or less my ideal dessert. Roasted green tea soft serve with sesame black sugar burnt miso and candied walnuts with cornflake dust. Cold, light, sweet. I could eat a whole one by myself pretty much any time. After nine years in business, Tsubaki feels like an Echo Park institution, and the kitchen is as strong as ever. This was a wonderful dinner, one I hope to repeat soon, with more sake, more yakitori, and more hojicha parfait.

Unfortunately the rice balls I wanted to try were sold out for the night- which how do you run out of something popular at a 7 PM dinner? Anyway, we had the fried tempura, garlic fried rice, short ribs, and chicken oysters. Everything was delicious and I would get these dishes again. But my standouts were the short ribs, they were tender and the marinade was light and fresh. The fried tempura was another standout for me because the sauce paired so well with the lightly friend asparagus. And I'm going to to say the chicken oysters- I think they were grilled to perfection with a tiny bit of wasabi. It's so hard to pick, everything tasted amazing and you can tell everything is thoughtfully prepared and well crafted with a beautiful presentation. I really enjoyed the food here and will be back to try more items.

Although multiple staff members helped throughout the evening, everyone worked together seamlessly and attentively. One thing that really stood out was how incredibly hardworking and detail-oriented the entire staff is. Nothing goes unnoticed. Empty plates are cleared immediately, tables are kept spotless at all times, and the service flows so smoothly from one dish to the next. Even with the open kitchen concept, the ventilation is excellent -- you somehow leave without smelling like food, which is impressive. The owner also deserves recognition because he truly leads by example. He wasn't just standing around supervising -- he was constantly walking around, helping staff, serving tables, observing details, and making sure everything ran perfectly. Also worth mentioning: the bathrooms were exceptionally clean, which honestly says a lot about a restaurant. Fantastic food, outstanding service, beautiful energy, and an incredibly well-run restaurant overall. We will definitely be back.

The hostess is always welcoming while the wait staff is attentive. Expect a slight bit of wait if you don't have a reservation but it's well worth it. We usually ask for bar seating because we enjoy watching them grill. To start, we get the Ochazuke, check the chalkboard for any specials and order some sake/beer while we browse through the menu. Honestly, you can't go wrong with anything on the menu.
