+ 1 star for the salmon quality. It's giving tourist trap in a small town. The fish quality is subpar once you stray from the salmon (my bias is coming from the west coast). They aren't even using quality imitation crab. It doesn't help that they insist on putting tempura in everything, so good luck finding a quality roll that is gluten free. Their menu is so big that everyone can find something but everything is barely acceptable. It's very inauthentic without having any kind of theme to the menu. If you're going to do a spin on food, at least make it good and have a theme. So this is the reason for 'tourist trap' they are just appealing to masses that can easily go up the road and get AYCE for cheaper and the same quality. Be different; do better. read more

Tried this sushi spot near Victoria Row. Tempura dinner was also big portion and was really good - would high recommend this dish. The teriyaki chicken dinner was big portion but chicken was dry. We also tried the Crispy Crunch roll and the Hako salmon sushi. The Crispy crunch roll was big and overall taste was not good, except that it had a bit of an odd topping with the gochujang sauce which did not go well with the rest of the roll. The Hako sushi was okay, taste wise is not bad, but there was an excessive amount of rice for the thin layer of fish on top. read more

Went for dinner with my son the other night and wasn't impressed at all. My son had his usual rolls and tobiko nigiri sushi and tempura. The rolls were on the expensive side and the rest was okay, pretty had to mess up. Then comes my udon and I will tell you all of the things wrong with it. I ordered the nabe udon, the soup was weak and hardly had any flavour, the chicken was chopped into very small strips and were very dry, the shrimp were chewy and no veggies other than cabbage...who puts cabbage in udon!!!??? I would not recommend this restaurant for good Japanese food. read more

I've spent about 10 years in the Vancouver area where there is a sushi restaurant on every corner and have been eating Japanese at least a couple of time a week for the duration of my time there..... Ta Ke Sushi has excellent food that is on par with the best Sushi restaurants I've been to in major centres and is by far the best one I have been to in the Maritime provinces. I had I number of items including Sake sashimi and Hokkigai sashimi, the later of which I'm sure is not a super common selection on PEI, however the fish was exceptionally fresh and the perfect temperature and texture. Service was also very good and restaurant itself was typical for a sushi restaurant and nice enough. There are very few quality ethnic restaurants on PEI and Ta Ke Sushi is definitely an exception.... excellent! read more

Finally!!! A restaurant in Charlottetown that my wife and I look forward to visiting, in fact crave on a regular basis, and never leave disappointed!! Ta Ke is run by the incomparable and charming Mr Lee and his wife; they run a very tight ship, and haul in fresh fish from the Atlantic daily! The Sushi Lunch Box at $9.95 is probably THE deal of the twenty first century, in any country, on any planet-- gorgeous fragrant miso soup with little chunks of tofu to start, followed by a large orange lunch box filled to the brim with assorted sushi and maki rolls, and accompanied by lovely fresh vegetable tempura and two different Japanese inspired salads. At the end of your meal Mr. Lee brings various slices of sweet and cool fruit to your table. Mix things up a little and try one of the Korean dishes( the Korean spiced beef is particularly good, and the dumplings too!!) or just develop a good rapport with Mr. Lee and ask him to make you something special and he will oblige- spicy citrus shrimp arrived at the table the last time and we gobbled it up!! Better still, order some of the fabulous sushi from the regular menu. I recently reconnected with an old friend from Victoria who was debating whether to keep his home on PEI, and I think our visit to Ta Ke convinced him to stay. I think it's going to be sushi for my fiftieth birthday as well. Better than anything in Halifax. As good as the best in New York. Now when they play that tacky little song at Christmas time about "downtown Charlottetown" that swinging sexy place, hic hum....with its one main street....I may just sing along a little. Nice place fast system to call the waitress. The food was good not astonishing but good enough to deserve 4 stars. The fish was fresh which in this case is 95% of the quality. Wanted to try sushi in the Atlantic. I'm not sure if this was a bad sign, but there were only 3 lunch specials - Chicken Terriyaki; Salmon Terriyaki; Sushi Combo (California Roll + 5 pc sushi). There weren't any other lunch combos/bento boxes available so it was pretty limited. I went the safe bet and tried the Chicken Terriyaki ($9.95). This came with miso soup, salad, cold noodle, deep fried veggies, rice and chicken. Not impressed with the food as I've gotten a lot better back west. Decor and location were good. But that's it. I wouldn't come back. I wished I tried the sushi but I'm not sure if that would have been good. read more

So thrilled to find this place in PEI. We've been sushi deprived traveling through the land of fish-n-chips. Also so glad to see real Asian peeps working the sushi bar. We got here bit late in the evening and we ordered the large sushi-sashimi platter. Would be considered a boat. The sashimi was nice but the rolls were just not rolled right and kept falling apart. The miso soup was pretty terrible - wow, salty and no flavor. But who goes to a Korean owned sushi restaurant for Japanese version miso? They had Korean options on the menu but it was a late last minute dinner and didn't want to wait all night for a proper Korean meal. Some of the side dish were brought out - Korean style. By Korean standards - meh. They served Jap-che and it was pretty bloated and tasteless. And boy the sushi chefs were not too friendly...kinda ruined it for me. I can hear them complaining about insurance and certain so and so are crooks...in Korean. After they served our dinner - the chefs disappeared. They went home, I think, as soon as they were done fixing our extra large sushi-sashimi combo. One way to ruin a customer's meal is to leave and start shutting down the restaurant during the meal. They left our one poor lonely waitress and not a hello or goodbye, or a ole grime the owners. The sushi-sashimi was okay in price. Better than other places. But the extras - like the terrible miso soup was overpriced. So at the mercy of the Owners here. I think the place has potential but without consistency and being able to serve the customers properly, no matter what time of the operations we stumble in - it will leave a bad mark. read more

All eatery's here on the island have to be graded on a curve. That being said this is Japanese food being made by Koreans. ( Chamsamida!) This place needs a little work but the pluses outweigh the minuses and I will go back since so far this is the closest thing to Japanese food that I have found here on the island. ( Ice tea no lemon please) Presentation of Tempura Tofu looks nice however the mechanics of eating such Large pieces of Silken Tofu with chop sticks can get annoying. The tofu that was used was either not firm or was left on counter in heat to long. The pieces should be cubed , not chopped into huge rectangles. There were not many vegetables with this this dish which is disappointing to a vegetarian . I don't especially want a block of tofu to eat. read more

My husband and I went here for dinner recently. We are visitors to Charlottetown, and also strict vegetarian, but were surprised to find a lot of choice on the menu. I had the tofu teriyaki and it was very sweet but very good, with lots of fresh vegetables and rice to sop up the juices. Not a bad restaurant, but not exactly good either. To put it simply, this restaurants offers price that matches the quantity of each meal. However, the quality is not as impressive as some other restaurants. For instance, the maki rolls are somewhat overpriced, being a bit over 12 dollars. The portion is enough to satisfy an average person. However, the sushi easily collapse once your teeth sinks into the first bite. Some ingredients like asparagus is not exactly familiar in Japanese Cuisine (I might be bias). Overall, the restaurants has an excellent atmosphere, great service (wifi included), and good food.
